They should get more(better) guitar solos in their songs. The keyboards are nice and ****, and if used right it could be the best **** to ever grace God's land. But too much keyboards and the guitars get left out or left behind. Dragonforce would be a good example of keyboards and guitars, but they suck way too much for me to say that CoB should be more like them

Why does everyone diss alexi like he's some red-headed step child? Children of Bodom is a band that puts out creative music filled with cool riffs, melodies, harmonies, solos and such(Are You Dead Yet is questionable). Just because they don't sound like everyone else doesn't mean they suck.

Yes it is. It lacks the technical prowess Kuppola brought to the band, Alexi stopped using the harmonic minor, his vocals are failing him, and basically, they got lazy.

Yeah, the harmonic minor riffs were the coolest (all albums through Hate Crew Death Roll) like Needled 24/7, Follow the Reaper, etc...What makes you say Alexander made most of the riffs? I thought Alexi wrote most of the riffs/songs. Just curious? Also, he probably thought stopped using the harmonic minor because he had done all he could with it. I don't know, he pretty much made three and a half albums off of that scale along with the other minors. If CoB returns to that melodic yet heavy sound, I would be impressed. I just hope they don't turn out like In Flames.

Yea, I kinda agree with the lazy part, but that's mainly because Alexi has to kinda work with Children of Bodom and then go and deal with Sinergy  But, I still stand failthful to Children of Bodom, Alexi is my God! And, I found Something Wild to be a pretty decent album, if anyone cares for my input. Are You Dead Yet was pretty good, If You Want Peace... The band is most certainly not lacking in technical prowess seeing as how Roope is a much better guitarist than Alex was. Also Alexi has stopped using the harmonic simply because he says he's bored of it. That sort of thing happens. It doesn't mean he's getting lazy. And his vocals (while different) are actually more refined than ever and definently not failing him. His vocals were actually his weakest point up until AYDY but because they're different than they used to be they get ragged constantly (by people who don't know what the hell they are talking about).

metalreaper450
10-16-2006, 02:02 PM
Yeah, like I said before Alexi built three and a half albums off of the harmonic minor (half refers to most of Hate Crew Death Roll). If CoB makes more songs like sixpounder, I would be pleased, that's for sure. Their style is changing but only because they were experimenting with some new sound. If they didn't change their sound, they would sound like slayer, slayer is good but they never changed their sound much or progressed as musicians.

I say lazy because eveything seems to have gone downhill. The solos/leads are less frequent, slower, less melodic, ect. The riffing style died alltogether and everything now seems to just be chugged on the 6th string with some powerchords thrown in every once in a while.

Sorry for bagging on Are You Dead Yet. It's really not that bad. It's just a bigger style jump than that from previous records. If CoB made Hatebreeder, then came out with Hate Crew Death Roll (skipping Follow the Reaper, if you will) you would still like them but you would say, "What the Hell happened to Bodom? They totally changed their style." That's exactly what is happening to CoB now. I still like them a lot, I don't think they've sold out, they just experimented with a different style.
Plus, in a interview with guitar world Alexi said something like, "yeah, the whole neo-classical thing got out of control in europe." He just wants to get away from being labeled Malmsteen Jr. and why not? Malmsteen is a fat jerk! plus his style gets old.
Alexi's style never gets old!!!!!

In an interview with I believe metal injection, they ask about their shying away from the neo-classical genre. Alexi says that they didn't plan on it happening, it just did. I say good for them, neo-classical does get old after a while. I miss some of the guitar/keyboard solos played together, but all they were were just ripps off of Mozart. Listen to Black Widow and you can clearly hear two passages from Mozart's Piano Concerto #20, K466.
Their new stuff is thrashier, but still amazing. People say that Alexi is getting lazy in his playing, I think he is refining it. You don't have to stick to the genre you start with when you're in a band. They are creative and can do whatever they want with their music. They can release an acoustic CD for all I can, if you're a fan, you will be a fan untill death.
If you rag on a player because their style evolves, you're an asshole.

Amen to Suicidal_Brick. Just because they change their style doesn't make them a sellout or anything. Alexi, Janne and the rest can still shred and they do. I saw them live in Sparks, Nevada in July 06. They played two songs from each album (excluding something wild, they opened for Lamb of God). Each song owned my soul, including in your face and living dead beat. These guys are for real, either playing speed, thrash, or neo-classical metal, they rock no matter what.

Seeing them live is awesome, though I have to admit that Alexi f****s up one a couple notes every once and again and also he throws in diminished 7th arpeggios instead of the "normal" arpeggio associated with the song. Anyways, Alexi would have to mess up a couple notes, his solos are technical and require numerous takes in a studio so whatever. One thing is for sure. CoB rules and the harmonies sound awesome live!
slipknot369

CoB is a fantastic band probably my favorite theyve got some of the sickest solos ive ever heard and i think the reason some people dont like them is cause they cant play any of their **** so they gotta bash them on the internet i have an idea save all of your CoB bashing and use it on something worth it like emo

Does it bug anybody else when people say that CoB is "cheesy"? I guess I can see where they are coming from because Alexi himself has said that the band doesn't take themselves seriously. I guess that having keyboards and headbanging while they shred is chessy but, whatever. CoB rules!!

Metalcore riffs? Just because every metalcore band steals any melodic death riff they can get their fingers around doesn't mean the riffs are "metalcore," even in the case of Are You Dead Yet?, the song structure is competely different from any metalcore, i.e. very few breakdowns.

Yeah. Hatecrewcrew Deathroll and Are You Dead yet are their less metal albums though. I don't think one would call it metalcore but it's definately more similar to that style than Hatebreeder and Follow the Reaper. That said, if you like Bed of Razors you'll definately like Hatebreeder. There are some breakdowns in the album and things like that to, so yeah.

I like all of CoB's stuff, HCDR is their heaviest stuff that still stays true to their old sound, melodic yet heavy. AYDY has melodic elements but the guitar work isn't as good, although the drums are still pretty good. Angels don't kill, Sixpounder, and Needled 24/7 are the best songs off of HCDR anyways.

I can't believe how many people here are dissing Janne Warman. He's one of the most talented keyboardsists on the planet. COB purposely struggled for years with sessionists waiting for Warman to graduate from music school – that is how much Warman is as an asset to the band.
Keyboards may not be as metal as the guitar (don't get me wrong, I love Alexi Laiho), but i suggest all the Warman haters to broaden their musical horizons or maybe at least acknowledge warman as a true virtuoso.
For Warman fans, check out his other band Warmen(a side project he formed in year 2000).

Who said that he went for Slayer? He didn't. He just went to bash people. And yeah, he's a genuine twat, and that's what's great about him. And if it was cheaper to go, I'd have joined him in the massacre, simply because it's fun to make little kids that think they're tough think again as to if the actually belong at metal concerts at all. I really wanna see these guys live. Trashed Lost and Strungout (the song, and then the EP) got me into them. Then I got Are You Dead Yet?, and I really liked it, regardless of what everyone else thinks. I like some of the songs better than others (TLASO, We're Not Gonna Fall, and Living Dead Beat), but I LOVE Follow the Reaper. There's not one song on it that I skip. In fact, I'm trying to learn some of the songs form that album (the title track, and Every Time I Die).
Is it just me, or are bands naming themselves after their songs (Hatebreed, Every Time I Die)? I'm aware both of those bands have been around a while, but I just made the connection between the names a while back and was wondering if it was just coincidence.

Definatley. Hell, he was one of Alexi's biggest influences as a kid, you'd think he'd at least let him solo some more :p: Only one on a studio album that I know of is his trade-off with Alexi in "Knuckleduster", and then there's his solo on "Chaos Ridden Days: Stockholm Knockout Live".
Gman400
11-30-2006, 09:06 PM
Yeah, I think it was a poor choice for Alexi to do virtually all the soloing. Roope could definately have spiced it up and brought a new element to the band. I guess Alexi is in pretty much 100% control, since I'm sure if Roope had much imput it would be more metal.

Yeah, CoB has influenced my playing alot. I do alot more harmonies where one of us plays a 2 or 3 note power chord, and the other guy just plays one note, or does a wierd inversion, and one of my songs has this big harmonized chorus. I'm also brushing up on my sweep arpeggios.

Yeah, I'm a crazy fan of Bodom but your point is definitely true.
It is just in human nature to hype up someone that you like. If someone has some obvious skill, which alexi has, then you add in the fact that you listen to his music for 3 hours a day and everyone is running around talking about him instead of finding out about new artists or whatever. Again I like Bodom, but people aren't subjective enough to take a step back and recognize that there is more out there than what we like. That is how I got into Bodom in the first place, I went outside my musical tastes to try something new and liked it a lot.
I will step off of my soapbox now.
Sorry.

That was my thought too at first. i really miss having a neck pickup, now, the only way to get a nice sounding clean tone is to load it up with chorus.
The Alexi 600 is in another galaxy of quality from the RR1 though. THe neck is pristine and the joint is wonderous for playing fast, which is kindof lacking with the RR1, which has a large square neck joint and the neck itself is kindof coarse. . .Plus, the alexi looks so much cooler. . .hehehe

yeah their keyboard player would leave during the verses and stuff whenever he didnt play and come back on stage with like 2 more beers right on time.
i'm guessing he had some kind of refridgerator back stage.

With all the beer I saw on stage the times I've seen them, I wouldn't be suprised if they had beer tapped to their bodies :haha

Maybe thats why they're so sloppy live, from the videos I've seen.
And dont get me wrong, I love cob, but jesus, alexi's live tone makes me cringe. Roll back the mids, for christ sake. The guitar sounds really nasal, for lack of a better word. And a little delay on his leads won't hurt either. Their tone sounds so good on the cd, but live, it all sounds like a school talent show.

Oh yeah. CoB is ****in fantastic. Whoever does not like them, that is your loss. From start to finish, CoB kicks ass. Alexi is an amazing guitarist and singer. Whoever thinks he isn't, try to play any CoB song and sing at the same time, then tell me who sucks. Janne Warman is a keyboard maniac. The guitar/keyboard solos are too ****in cool. Whoever thinks they aren't, expand your musical horizon. I saw CoB on the unholy alliance tour, they were amazing. Although they only played a 30-45 minute set, they were still the best performers on the list. And yes, to all you slayer fags, they kicked slayer's ass. Actually, we left before the gayness in slayer ruined the night. But this is about CoB, and they kick ass. Anybody who disagrees, go **** yourself with a slayer cd. COBHC IS THE ****IN BEST IN THE WORLD.

Some songs sound kick ass...with the first listen. I find that they follow the same formula for most of their songs.
-Intro
-Playing Really Fast
-YAOW YAOW
-More fast playing
-YAOW YAOW
-Keyboard/Guitar Solo
-Keyboard Guitar Solo pt. 2
-YAOW YAOW YAOW YAOW
-Outro
Still, it soudns OK.
Haha. That made me chuckle.
CoB still rock though. :headbang:

hey, I'm new on UG... and I love all the stuff from Children. I play guitar, and I've just formed a band for playing songs of CoB.
I'm from Viña del Mar, Chile. My english is not the best, I guess.
...and now I'm going to contribute with some tabs. I hope you will enjoy them.

I hope I'm not the only one to notice this but it seems like there were way more solo's on SW than on any of the other COB albums. I personally think that those solo's were the best ones Alexi ever did (with a few exceptions: Everytime I Die, Downfall, Mask of Sanity, and a few others). What do you guys think?

i like CoB alot, i just bought "Are You Dead Yet?" but i relized that all of they're chorus's have them same four chords in them. but other than that Alexi is SICK!!! and i enjoy the keyboarding it adds flovor to the songs thats somthing that others dont have.
dude i never noticed until i read that. hahaha its true! we're not gonna fall's chorus has the exact same chord AND progression as trashed lost and strungout! anyway alexi and roope are amazing at guitar, janne is amazing at keyboards, jaska is amazing at drums, and henkka's pretty good at bass. definitely one of my favorite bands ever! except when they're playing live janne wont ever shut up on the keyboards its kinda gay hearing like a gothic tune while alexi is talking to the crowd

yeah the guitar parts (excluding the solos obviously) are pretty basic (as basic as CoB can get prolly) on Are You Dead Yet? but that cd has a great rhythm to it, prolly cause the whole thing is in Drop - C tuning which is now my favorite tuning
last week i was talking to my friends guitar teacher, he plays bluegrass stuff, and we were discussing my interest in metal, and i said that my favorite metal band was Children of Bodom and he was like "oh yeah i saw them last week" this coming from a guy with straight white hair, who plays in a bluegrass band, and i kinda old, i was shocked....CoB kicks that much ass obviously
and The Chaos Ridden Years DVD is amazing, i love the part were alexi gets arrested for "disturbing the peace" at the end of the documentary
"sir we people are getting upset by your playing, we need to relocate you"
"well no one has really seemed to mind, they given me quite a bit of money too"

Honestly, that shouldn't have made you like the CD more. Except for the first album all the other ones are in D. Drop C IS D standard except the low string is dropped so that can barre power chords.

No shit XD I'm really excited to get it.. I have the CD (I probably already mentioned that) adn while it's cool, Alexi needs to pay a liiittle more attention to his playing. I read in a Guitar World interview his views on people (like Dream Theater) who focus on every little note and never **** up, and I agree with him a bit. But there's a point where you just gotta focus, man XD But it was still awesome. Way more energy than the studio recordings alone. I have a feeling that If I every start playing shows with my band I'll hit my share of bad notes :p:
Some of the improvs were really cool though, I may actually incorporate them when I play those songs, actually XD

I just got back from Sanctity/Gojira/Amon Amarth/Bodom, and it freakin' owned. Bodom played well but I was sort of dissapointed because I think there was only 2 songs from Hatebreeder. Alexi played pretty decent I guess. It's not like it was spot-on and I didn't expect that, but he was pretty good with his leads and stuff. It's just I don't like the new stuff that much (save a few songs) so all in all I liked Amon Amarth a bit better.

If you're saying CoB will never sell out then think again. They've gotten more and more mallcore the past 2 albums and it's not getting any better. I'm not saying that's necessarily selling out, because Alexi said he's sick of the neo-classical thing, but it's not like CoB hasn't become popular and stuff.
