Children of Bodom’s Alexi Laiho and Roope Latvala Share Their Most Sinister Shred Secrets
and Metal Magic Tricks
By Jude Gold... | September, 2006
The thousands of metalheads lined up in front of the arena for the latest installment of the Unholy Alliance tour loudly chant the name of the tour’s headliner.
“Slayer! Slayer! Slayer!” is the rowdy mantra, and while the concert’s main attraction is indeed the “heaviest band on the planet” (as Zakk Wylde described Slayer in his June GP cover story), there are other influential head-bangers on the bill, including a younger band that has been helping set the course for (and, for that matter, bring killer solos back to) thrash metal in the new millennium: Finland’s most exciting guitar band, Children of Bodom.
Led by 27-year-old lead singer and lead guitarist Alexi “Wildchild” Laiho, Children of Bodom (COB for short) is a metal fivesome that, with the departure of co-guitarist Alexander Kuoppala three years ago, now also features one of Finland’s most respected and innovative metal players, Roope Latvala—who, born a generation ahead of Laiho, is one of the younger guitarist’s chief inspirations on the guitar. (“It’s always educational playing with him,” says Laiho. “He’s no wuss on the guitar. He’s super musical.”) In the pages that follow, the fleet-fingered Finns take a break from their grueling schedule of gigging and partying to show you some of their favorite licks, tricks, and techniques—many of which you can hear on COB’s crushing new album Are You Dead Yet?
Sparking the Blaze
It’s the crack of 3:00 pm, and Alexi Laiho has peeled himself out of his bunk on the Bodom bus and trudged through the near endless bowels of the arena past racks of guitars being tuned, mobile drum risers in mid-assembly, and doors marked “Slayer” and “Lamb of God,” before finally entering Children of Bodom’s dressing room. He’s wielding his dangerously pointy ESP Alexi Laiho signature model—a sleek, shark-tail-shaped 6-string that takes direct inspiration from the Jackson Randy Rhoads models that were his go-to guitars before being stolen.
“Um, I kind of just woke up,” says Laiho, plugging into a battery-powered Marshall MS2 Mini amp and cranking the tiny half-stack to within a micro-decibel of its battery-powered life. The heavily distorted tone bounces around the reflective cinderblock walls and the little speaker, miraculously, fills the room. “I need to warm up,” says the guitarist. “Here’s one of my favorite warm-ups—a two-string exercise that I got from Paul Gilbert ”
As Laiho plays the descending A Aeolian (natural minor) pattern and branches out into dive-bomb, locking-trem harmonics and warped-sounding, bluesified pentatonic tapped licks, Roope Latvala, his partner in guitardom, swiftly and silently breezes into the room on a tricked-out street bike. Latvala plugs his custom ESP Random Star into his own Marshall Mini, and contributes to the cacophony. “I don’t have any warm-up exercises,” says Latvala. “I just play whatever comes to mind. Actually, sometimes I’ll warm up on little Bach or something. It really gets me focused.”
The opening to Musette in D major (a keyboard piece transcribed for guitar) from Bach’s Notebook II for Anna Magdalena—is a perfect example of the type of piece Latvala typically plays. For one, it engages multiple picking-hand fingers (you can pluck the piece fingerstyle or use a hybrid pick-and-fingers approach to sound the notes). Secondly, it employs the one tuning that is a staple of both classical and metal guitar: dropped-D (spelled D, A, D, G, B, E, low to high). On Are You Dead Yet?, Laiho and Latvala often employ dropped-C tuning (the same as dropped-D, down a whole-step), which makes for intensely brutal power chords through 4x12 cabinets.
Sweeping Up the Ante
There’s nothing like a friendly head-cutting guitar duel before the “morning” coffee and Gatorade (and vodka?) have even kicked in. (“How to drink,” Latvala interjects wryly when Laiho is asked if he has learned anything from playing alongside Latvala.) All warmed up, Laiho proceeds to test-fire a few sweep-picked licks, including the brightly major Ex. 4, which is based on the simple fourteenth-position D fingering shown in Ex. 5. To play the complete lick with the right spirit, don’t worry too much about phrasing the note values exactly as written. Just go for an explosive yet flutey sound in which the pitches don’t overlap too much, and add the 22nd-fret tapped notes on the high string as shown. (Laiho generally taps with his middle finger so that he can conveniently maintain his thumb/index grip on the pick.)
As if to up the ante, Latvala sees Laiho’s tap/sweep lick and raises him a dose of legato by playing his own “arpeggios from hell” riff—an evil D minor phrase that sounds “swept” but actually features no use of the plectrum. The secret of Latvala’s approach lies in the fully legato Dm arpeggio. Notice that every note in this repeating exercise is slurred (i.e., hammered or pulled), including the first note (the fifth-string D), which is hammered with the 1st finger—a slur tactic few guitarists explore. The complete lick involves switching to a triplet- sixteenths feel and extending the Dm arpeggio using notes tapped with the middle (m) and ring (a) fingers.
It’s Gonna Blow!
Not to be outdone, Laiho launches into the volcanic series of rising slur/sweep three-string arpeggios - a menacing diminished line similar to a blistering ascent you can hear Laiho play starting at the 3:50 mark of “Living Dead Beat” (from Are You Dead Yet?). The musical cherry on top is the final note—the high-altitude tapped D held at the 19th fret of the pre-bent first string. Gradually release the bend and the tapped note will drift down a minor third to B.
Pent-up Rage
Latvala closes out our session with an interesting take on the pentatonic scale. In the key of D at the fifth position, most rockers would play the minor pentatonic scale using the traditional, two-scale-tones-per-string “box” fingering. But Latvala gets a more mysterious sound by playing the same notes with a three-scale-tones-per-string approach . Ascend and descend this fingering and you’ll hear the sound Latvala loves—notes that are repeated back-to-back, but are sounded on different strings. Apply a simple pattern to the scale and you’ll get a sense of how Latvala includes this approach in his solos. And don’t forget to try expanding the world’s favorite pentatonic box to a three-notes-per-string fingering. “Then,” says Latvala, “you can add tapped notes and do four notes per string.”
Shred ain’t dead!
Sharp and Pointy
They play in the same band, they use similar rigs, they use the same DR strings on their custom ESP axes, and they often double the same licks. But Laiho and Latvala most certainly don’t use the same picks. “I like pointy picks, like this one,” shares Laiho, displaying a thick, weathered, semi-triangular black plectrum (possibly from Dunlop’s Tortex Sharp or Jazz III lines). “The fact that it’s smaller and sharper-tipped makes it good for fast-picked lines. At first, a pick this pointy may make playing super-heavy stuff more difficult, but you soon get used to it and learn how to do everything with it. I can’t use the more round-tipped picks most people use.”
Latvala’s pick is a bit more traditional in shape than Laiho’s, but it allows him a distinctly more metal attack. “I use brass picks,” he says, wielding one such plectrum with its tip and sides shaved knife-edge sharp from playing. “And from filing—I file them to make them even sharper. Sharp edges minimize the hand movement and help you play cleaner and faster. But watch out—this pick will damage the finish on your guitar.”
Double-Duty Death Metaller
Alexi Laiho is a true rarity in mainstream metal—he’s a lead guitarist who plays raging, extended solos and he handles all the lead vocals. “I’m a guitar player first, not a singer, but no one else wanted to sing so I had to do it,” says Laiho. He explains that there’s no single way to master the balancing act of doing both tasks simultaneously. “It’s just something you get used to. But if I’m singing a tricky rhythm while also playing a guitar part that has a different rhythm, that’s something I usually will have to work on and practice a bit. The toughest situation is when you’ve recorded the guitar parts first and written the vocals later. Putting them together afterwards can be difficult. With some parts [on Are You Dead Yet?] I was like, ‘How am I going to pull that shit off?’ But I got it together. You should be able to if you call yourself a musician.”

As far as album sales go, it’s doing better than any of the previous ones, which is great. We’ve just been touring the album and we’ll keep doing the same thing until the end of this year.”
Children Of Bodom's Blooddrunk
Suite 101: Lyrically a lot of the album’s about self-destructive behaviour. Have you had to reign yourself in over recent years?
Alexi: “Well, self-destructive behaviour doesn’t necessarily mean cutting yourself or anything and it’s maybe a subconscious thing too. With me, sometimes my drinking can get out of hand and at the end of the day stupid shit happens. But, I don’t know, I guess it’s in my nature and I just can’t help it. I’m definitely not for ****ing cutting myself or doing anything stupid like that but sometimes something happens. What are you gonna do?”
Suite 101: You seem quite an accident prone guy as well – has that always been the case?
Alexi: “A little bit, yeah. I’ve definitely calmed down a bit lately. I actually have a black eye right now but I haven’t broken any bones or anything in quite a while.”
Alexi Laiho, Award Winning Guitarist
Suite 101: You’re consistently held up as one of the metal world’s best guitarists. How does it feel when you win awards like the recent Metal Hammer one – does it mean much to you?
Alexi: “It means a lot to me, definitely. It’s flattering of course and it makes me feel really good. It’s like all the work and all the practice pays off in that sort of way that you’re aware that other people appreciate it. But then again, that’s a side of things I try not to think about too much. It’s great to win an award or whatever but at the end of the day it’s all about music and if you’re making music with an eye on winning awards then you’re ****ed. I play the guitar first of all just through a love of music and everything else is extra.”
Alexi on the Long Delayed Sinergy Album
Suite 101: Is Sinergy still an ongoing concern?
Alexi: “Erm…I don’t think so. I mean, I don’t know. We never really decided on anything. We never officially broke up but with these schedules it’s been impossible to do anything. I’m sure we can finish this one album that we started recording like three years ago but…well, we’ll see. Maybe one day, you never know.”
Suite 101: Is it true that the album was mostly recorded at one point but the recordings got lost?
Alexi: “We’ve got drum tracks, rhythm guitars, bass and some vocals as well so there’s only guitar leads and vocals missing. Nothing got lost, any master tapes or anything.”
Suite 101: But for the moment there are no concrete plans to finish it?
Alexi: “Correct.”

What was actually going on is that the show was about a couple of unsigned finnish bands that each got a mentor, for one episode I think, and Alexi was one of them.

Bed of Razors
In Your Face
Banned From Heaven
Hate Crew Deathroll
Everytime I Die
Downfall

Alexi just like, walks behind his amps and Roopes all like "wtf?" So he was just like noodling and talking to Janne trying to kill time.
Also funny, Janne seems to be quite the fan of playing with one hand and chugging beers with the other. He probably downed 5 or 6 during their set.

Well, I mean, Bodom generally have a core group of songs they always play live even if they switch up the order, but you obviously know that. I know that you're a regular here and browse the Ultimate Metal forums, so I don't really know how you planned not to see any surprise setlist picks, like Bed or Razors. Ok, cool.
I'm seeing them Oct. 10th, which is their last show on the tour, so it should be interesting (not sure if in a good way or bad way). One of my friends who's going with me was extremely anti-metal, but over the past year or so, I've very slowly gotten him to like In Flames and some Bodom. I was really excited to bring him along, especially since I think there would be a signing session an hour before the show started. Children of Bodom are one of the better metal bands right now. Personally I find them to be "real," where as most of today's "metal" is so loaded with other tid bits that it doesnt even really qualify as being metal any longer. Alexi Laiho has real chops...hes got an original sound and his "note choice" isn't limited to a strict scale as the majority of shredders are. The keyboards are great in this band too, as I find that they add an atmosphere to the music as well as another vien of melody. That brings me to my next point...most new metal bands seem to fear melody. Its not all about the breakdown. The goal of any artist should be to make music. I understand that the definition of music will be mostly subjective, however, I believe that in order for a piece to be musical it should posess a melodic quality. This is something Bodom has plenty of. I also really enjoy every song they have ever written. I know just about every song of theirs on guitar and Im glad I do. Those songs have brought me miles ahead in song writing skill and melodic sense. All in all, excellent band...Children of Bodom for the win.

This is from Scythes of Bodom.
Some of you may have been wondering why on Earth Alexi has worn shirts with suspicious, white splashes all over them or why the heck Henkka has been wearing a shirt with a "Wildchild" print on it. Surprisingly enough for COB, the answer has nothing to do with manlove or alcohol abuse, but a newly born clothing line which goes by the name Wildchild Industries. This is good news for all of the fans who aren't willing to pay the price of wearing shirts with reapers and song lyrics printed all over them just to be recognized by other Bodom fans on the street.
Many ideas for their designs come from Alexi himself, hence the name of the company. Even though Alexi and Henkka are involved with Wildchild Industries and it goes by Alexi's stage name, their products are not Children Of Bodom merchandise or strictly related to the band in other ways. The company has recently launched their homepage and webshop at www.wildchildindustries.com.
You might recognize some familiar fonts from Alexi's clothing and things like the number 33 known from his tattoo on the first designs available for sale. Be sure to check the site for high quality clothing and more information!

I got a message from family in Finland, and it turns out that one of the people with "Wildchild Industries" is a good friend. So I'm getting a bunch of free shirts and a hoodie.

I saw em at Giagantour in Louisville, KY. The pit area knocked down the barricade in front of the stage, and COB was taken off the stage. They only played for 30 minutes or so after that :( . I REALLY like Something Wild, and I personally think it's their best. But the whole album catalog is good. There are the elitists that say "AYDY and Blooddrunk suck. They're for noobs. Theyre not like old COB." Dont listen to em. AYDY and Blooddrunk arent the best albums, but they arent worth passing up.

It's a company out of finland owned by a friend of the band. Alexi and Henkka do most of the designs, and they named it after Alexi's nickname. Otherwise, it has nothing to do with Bodom.

Scan from a recent issue of Young Guitar, going over the gear used by Alexi and Roope. The most interesting thing about it is that it pretty much officially confirms that Alexi is using active EMG's. What's more is that it's either an 81, or a new type. My japanese isn't the best, but what it seems to say is that it's a signature "AL" pickup. This may or may not be the supposed new kind of EMG in production, the "EMG -X" which I know is also being used/tested by Brendon Small (Dethklok).

It was ****ing amazing.
Black Dahlia Murder easily had the most energy and biggest crowd response of the night (though BTBAM and Bodom put on terrific shows).
I thought that about half of the crowd for Bodom sucked because everyone was either moshing or just standing there, taking pictures. It made me feel so out of place, I was just at the edge of the mosh pit, holding people back and headbanging the whole way.
Sorry to hear your sister's in the ER though, my sister's been there too, it's pretty scary. :(

Angels Don't Kill, Everytime I die, Bed of Razors, and that's starting with the easiest (with the exception of the solos). I'm not good enough to know what songs are the hardest but I'd guess they'd be Kissing the Shadows, and most of the songs from Hate Crew... Basically all of the solos are technically challanging (except for Bed of Razors) so just look at those.

Seeing as how you thought Hate Crew Deathroll was alright I don't see how you could not think Bloodrunk was alright
I was thinking the same thing. For me, Blooddrunk reminded me of a faster tempoed HCDR.

Oh really? Why were they trash? I thought they were very good albums... Seeing as how you thought Hate Crew Deathroll was alright I don't see how you could not think Blooddrunk was alright... Also AYDY is a great album and its very different than the other Bodom albums which is a good thing imo...
they were trash because "lolzorz dey liek totally solded owt!!11!
i for one love AYDY (and all the previous ones), but don't really like Bloodrunk, i guess it just never hit me like the others did
i'm also i bit less fond of HCDR
i love their old style and their AYDY style, but to me HCDR and Blooddrunk sound like transitions betweent these styles, which isn't as appealing to me

personally, i think its more selling out to play songs that are your fans favorites, even though you don't like the song - eg bed of razors.

Yeah, I liked AYDY better than Blooddrunk as well. Although I thought HCDR was better than AYDY.

Stop Bitching About The Meaning Of Sellout And Talk About Kidnapping And Raping Janne Like You're Supposed To!!!!!!!
EDIT: Wow, it really won't let you talk in all caps on here, it just makes everything capitalized so that you look like a noob :p:

Never did I say they sold out. Sorry if I don't have the same taste as you do, I like the songs AYDY,Trashed Lost & Strungout and Were not gonna fall off that album but I can't get into the rest of them. As for Blooddrunk i just hate his vocal work and I just can't get into the songs.

So I saw CoB in Seattle, last Tuesday. Amazing show, as usual.
Got to chill with the band afterwards like last time, still all very awesome guys. Alexi hit the bar not long after the show, but still was extremely patient for all the people who wanted to get things signed and all that. Finally got to talk with Roope a bit more, definitely a real badass. We talked about Stone, and he said they'll be playing more shows soon. Jaska was real nice, too.

Loving the new album (Blooddrunk), I need to listen to some of their old stuff from Something Wild, so I'll probably look into getting that soon.

Myself, I can't do the death metal voice. D: So I can't help you out there.
Can anyone recommend a few songs I should try learning of COB in future?

Testament and Bodom were great last night, but the mixing was terrible. The bass drum pretty much dominated the sound and you could hardly hear Alexi and Roope at all. I was right in front of the PA, so my ears were ringing, and it didn't help that a crowd surfer kicked me in the side of the head.
One of my friends got a pick form Alex Skolnick, and one of my other friends got one from Alexi. I am so jealous right now.
Someone asked me in this thread about a month ago to tell him how long Testament played for. They had one hour right before Bodom.

When I do growls they seem kind of quiet...
Then again I have more of a Killswitch Engage or All That Remains kind of metalcore-ish scream, and don't do growls as often : /

Turn the distortion on the mic and just yell with a finnish accent. Alexi has no vocal talent IMO it was ok in the first two albums but he still used distortion. Now in AYDY and Blooddrunk hes mostly just yelling.

That would've been me. Thanks.
Bodom + Testament sounds like a winner to me.

Wrong.
You've obviously never seen them live or... listened to them much. He doesn't use distortion on his voice and he isn't just "yelling" either.

+1
he is kind of yelling, but with a weird way of using your breath apparently, but there is definately no distortion

So my classmate thinks - because of the lyrics in "Angels Don't Kill" - that Bodom is screamo.

I hate my classmates :bash:
