SEEEEEVEEEEN STRIIIING.
What kind?
Delanoir
12-14-2008, 06:59 AM
Yeah, 7's are awesome. I still have blueprints and plan for a 7-string RR, but it might take a different form. As of yet I've been playing a Jeff Loomis sig that isn't mine. Great guitar, but I'm just not a big fan of Strat-shaped guitars. Little bit boring to me, personally.
It may just be 4 more notes, but damn those notes are awesome.
CodySG
12-14-2008, 07:34 AM
It's strange...but I find that any other body style BESIDES a SS style looks kind of odd on 7 strings....
That said, a seven string V would be pretty cool, I don't know about an RR though...
Yeah, the loomis is pretty cool. I just got an Agile though.
Mahog body, maple neck through, blue quilt top, maple fb no inlay, string through TOM, coil tapping...all for under $600 USD?
THANK YOU!!!!!!!
Getting a fb cab for the VHT probably next week, some more recording stuff...it's going to be a good new year  !!!
Delanoir
12-14-2008, 08:15 AM
The only thing I might not like about a 7-RR would be that it might look too fat for the shape.
And we clearly have different aesthetic tastes. I hate quilted maple. And maple fretboards. :p:
But I do love the look of no inlays.
And VHT's are badass. They were used on a lot of earlier Bodom albums. You know, just to keep this at least somewhat on topic.
EDIT: My backup shape for the 7-string I'm making is a Gibson-style Flying V, or the Explorer.
CodySG
12-14-2008, 08:58 AM
Yeah, that's why I think a regular V would be pretty cool, but like said the RR might look strange because of the thickness.
What can I say, I'm a sucker for the purrrdy colors and the maplely mapleness!
Agile makes a 7 string explorer type guitar. Pretty sure they have color options and floyd/non-floyd versions.
Also, didn't Alexi only use the 2/90/2 on HCDR/AYDY? I thought he used Peavey power amps for the earlier stuff, then the VHT power amp, then the Marshall head?
At least in the studio. He's gone through everything live.

Delanoir
12-14-2008, 09:44 AM
Yeah, we'll see what happens. I'm going to make rough styrofoam models to see how the shapes look to scale and (more or less) in hand.
I've seen they're explorer, and its cool, but I'm ridiculously picky with Explorer shapes, and it just doesn't do it for me. It is nice, though.
And you're partially right. The VHT was used on AYDY (for some reason I thought it was FTR, too, but I was wrong). The earlier albums, though, were (not counting the Lee Jackson, which he's pretty much always used) actually a back and forth between a 5150 and ENGL E840/50.
Lord of the 7-stringed flies.
I love Caparison, but Strats still do nothing for me.
The only exception to that for me, inexplicably, is an EVH-style (to at least some degree) one.

There's ought to be at least 10 other instructional videos that trump this one. The tone is atrocious as well on that vid as well.
Get Rock Discipline by JP, imo the best instructional video around. Other guys like Gilbert and Gambale might teach better string skipping and sweeping respectively, but overall Rock Discipline is the most comprehensive one out there.
EDIT: Of course, unless your sole purpose is to learn CoB stuff, then all that I've said above is moot.

You do realize that while Alexi was still with Jackson, they produced 50 guitars in Finland called the RR-LL's, which were Alexi and Roope's signature guitars, right? You do also realize that the Japanese Jackson company, Jackson Stars, has been producing a single pickup, neck-thru, 24 fret Rhoads for several years now, right?
EDIT: Here's a pic of a Jackson Stars RR-J2SP. I'd post one of an RR-LL, but those pics are damn near impossible to find.

Now I have to stay up and sober up befdore sleeping so as I don't have a hangover :(
That said, the sixpounder solo is ****ing sexy as hell, very tasty use of penta power!!!! Also like Everytime I Die and Angels Don't Kill a lot.
That said, I really do feel that Downfall is the complete CoB package. I think it represents all of what and why Children of Bodom was made and all that they stand for.
You two! Fight to the death!!!
God...I feel like Janne in that second picture....
Shares my our B-Day!!!! April 26th Biatch!!!!
Also, second from the last picture of Alexi on the last page....totally me......playing guitar......oh yeah..
Also...me wants ghey pink guitar :(
Also, also, I love Jackson and ESP, but I wish that Fender just left Jackson alone :( and that the CS wasn't obnoxiously over priced and the wait wasn't stupid. ESP's CS is better priced and the wait is a little better....plus ESP's luthiers are some of the best in the world, not saying their better thanb JAckson's, but they are really good.
That said, it's basically a matter of taste but...I think that ESP *even mroe so with the Alexi models* are probably a better buy than a Jackson of equal value in my opinion.
Reason I like the ESP RR's over the Jackson are two fold... 1. I hate front loaded w/ pick guards and 2. Being a bigger guy, ESP's RR bodys *being a bit larger than Jackson RR's* fit my body better and just feel more comfortable over all.

Ehhh...on CS models, or really high end stuff usually painted necks don't really bother me.
But I do prefer satin :)
There was a CS white 24, floyded, no pick guard Jackson RR with a satin neck on ebay some time ago that was pretty sexy.

He's been using it for almost a year now. Since the recording process of BD.
If you think about his influences and tone tastes, it shouldn't really surprise you. Marshall's have a ton of mids, which Alexi is all about. And it's a no-nonsense amp, with one channel that's great at overdriven guitar.
Plus, other people have used the JCM800 are the Ozzy guitarists for starters, which we know he draws from. Plus a ton of others.

I always thought his treble setting was a lot higher.
It might have been before. You always have to fuss a bit when it's a different head, since they all (of course) have different voicing.
Usually his mids would be a little higher, too. And I think bass is usually a little lower.
But basically, if you're only thinking about the mix and not the dial settings, his mids are always the highest, followed by treble, then bass.
Shinozoku
12-18-2008, 08:12 PM
I always thought his treble setting was a lot higher.
It is on his Lee Jackson preamp, where he has it and the mids set full up (with a mid shift at 3). Incidentally, I've found myself copying his Lee Jackson settings somewhat on my SL+ module (only I actually have my mids at 8 with my treble at 5 and bass at 7). I'll try his JCM800KK settings later and see how they sound through my Randall :) I hope to get the JCM800 mod done to that module soon too, so that'll be a plus (more cutting mids, even when scooped :))
What?!?!?! I've heard nothing but great things!?
What's wrong with it?
Bridge was installed 1/8th inch too close to the neck, so it can't intonate properly. Gonna have the pocket routed out (don't talk to me about resale value, I'm keepin this bitch forever :p: ) further back and the trem reset so it will intonate and I can get all the tuning stability, note clarity, and sustain that guitar offers. Plus it should warm up the tone a bit by essentially making the pickup slightly closer to the neck, and I'm certainly not against that.
Delanoir
12-18-2008, 08:34 PM
Let us know how those setting work out when you try them. It'll be interesting to see how it differs from the Randall to the Marshall.
And I was thinking about getting the pink sawtooth Edwards, but hopefully it won't have any issues. I wasn't worried before, but now I'm wary.

Right after ordering mine I heard that some of the Edwards models had sustain issues, but they should generally have good quality control. It's a little better than the American LTDs from what I heard in that department, but the playability is definitely above the deluxe/signature model LTDs. Just make sure you fill out the warranty card thing so you can send it in if you get one with manufacturing defects. This will involve learning to read Japanese XD
Also, it would probably help if I had my amp loaded with EL34s, and if I had the JCM800 mod done on my SL+ module :p: But I'll definitely do a before and after thing. I wanna get some KT77's to use and couple with my 6L6's that I have stock, and maybe do some preamp tube switching, but I would need money in order to do all that lol!
*takes another look at the settings and laughs his ass off* forgot that was live volume. I can mimic the preamp volume, or I can mimic the master, but not both. Not without destroying the house LOL!
EDIT: Okay, with my master on 1 and the pre on 9. I set the gain at 5 first (to mimic the beast switch setting), and started playing the Lake Bodom riff. I immediately stopped and boosted the gain to 6, and brought the mids to 8 (to compensate for power tube voicing), and it's a GREAT sound for Bodom :) Just gotta pop some 11's on my guitar and try it in the right tuning. Should definitely match then :satan:

I don't like that much gain on most amps...
The VHT can handle it because it's so tight and dry, it just gives it a rougher almost sandpaperish tone...not in a bad way though, just grity I guess.
I usually keep most of my EQ about the same give or take, they all stay around noonish, then I fiddle with the certain boosts and graphic EQ to fine tune ze tone. Gain usually stays anywhere from 10 o'clock to 1 or 2 o'clock.
That said, the sheer middy-ness of it gives earlier Bodom tone without even trying lol.

1 or 2 o'clock is about 6 on the dial, so therefore you do like that much gain :p: Plus, it's a high-mid gain module. It technically counts as high-gain, but it just doesn't feel that high to me, even with my new pickup. I think it's actually a perfect amount though :D
****ed up the JCM800 mod on my SL+ module with a cap that only had 1/10th of the value it needed to be, so now it sounds like a wool blanket is covering it LOL! Gonna go by an electronics store OTHER than Radio Shack and get the right one this time, and have my friend who did the job fix the mod. I see good things in the future though! And I had my pickup fixed, the bare ground wasn't soldered on by the guy who I PAYED $17 to do the job

So Young Guitar put out a new 100% issue, this time on Alexi Laiho. The entire thing is a compilation of all the articles and interviews they've had with him since 1999 till now. It has a ton of pictures from those, plus new ones from all throughout those years. It details his gear setup from the beginning till recently, as well. Came with a DVD of Alexi, where he talks a little bit about each album, his current gear, and how to play a couple licks (with tabs for them) from each album, plus a few random ones and exercises (also with tabs). Pretty interesting.

Well, The SL+ module doesn't have quite as much gain on tap as the 5150 or Recto. It's definitely closer to a hot rodded JCM900. The gain is such as the kind of gain where you have that hollow sounding, but still tight bass when you palm mute. You don't get the gritty, chunky sound, but you get the punchy, 80's metal "chock" sound, if that makes sense.
CodySG
12-21-2008, 08:17 PM
Totally.
It's a dry sounding gain, but I was mainly just talking about the KK800.
Really, my only complaint about BD is that I thought it had a bit to much gain...
But, I think the main thing is adding gain to taste, but keeping definition. When that starts to go is when I always stop....no point in playing if people just hear crazy noise. Unless that's what you're going for, but then that's a whole other story :D
Shinozoku
12-21-2008, 08:26 PM
Very true, my good sir! I've heard the KH-3 module is like that too. Apparently it's fairly high gain, but somehow has a very dry feel to it. A lot of people use it to emulate a VHT sound because of this, actually.
I agree about the tone on BD though. I loved the voicing, but the gain was a bit too much. I blame the Blackouts, really =/ I think they pushed the amps a bit more than usual, and since Alexi was using essentially the same settings he's used for forever, it was too much with the active pickups. Plus, his switch to the VHT power amp since AYDY could have contributed, as it does use KT88's, adding to the massive OOMPH. You could hear the OOMPH form the power amp in AYDY, but it wasn't until he switched to the blackouts that he started getting too much gain.

I think with B/O's is it's more of the voicing...
I think that they might color the tone a bit too much...kind of like EMG's, but instead of that frosty, sharp, *almost* sterile tone you just get a sonic overload of everything...
It sounds more natural sure, but to me it basically just raped the sonic EQ and forced everything to super overdrive.
I've heard that the neck B/O is pretty nice sounding in the bridge though...so I might try that someday.

Personal opinions of course...
But...in terms of pure abilities to play...Alexi is far from perfect or even on of the best...
Now, he's probably one of my favorite song writers and the biggest influence on why I play guitar. A lot of his lyrics are really good too!
But, he's no where near the best of anything really...
He is one of the most influencial players in modern metal though...and he writes some fecking good music in my opinion.
This is all coming from a HUGE Bodom and Alexi fan, I just try to not be a blind fanboy *not saying you are or that anything is wrong with it* I just can't even go to the Bodom boards anymore because of all the Bodom/Alexi peni suckysucky.

I personally hate Alexi. He thinks he is such a bad-ass, so all the queers think that because of his image, the music is good. Now, I'm not saying the music sucks, far from it (Well, we won't count the last two albums :P), what I'm saying is that people just like them because of Alexi and his image, not because of the music. Therefore, by listening to a "bad-ass" guitarist, they think that they are Bad-ass themselves.
