I've ALWAYS just classified as Melo-Death.
May be wrong, but that's just how I see 'em...
Probably not so much post AYDY? though :(
Also...I've always wanted to know *and I'm sure most people will just go with the majority* but seeing as how sooooo many people seem to splooge for KtS, this question, I ask upon thee!
If there wasn't 85737983 solos, still like it? Why? What REALLY makes it different than other CoB songs besides the 6 solos?
The solos are great, but I love the lyrics. Reminds me of how I feel about mah woman :D So much so in fact, that I put them in a pic I did for her for Valentine's day :p:

I definitely wouldn't like it as much. The main lead line is still one of Alexi's best works though.
It makes the song the way the solos in Hangar 18 make that song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYuUyfbZkhY
Neverminding the slopfest in that video, can he not reproduce the D minor scalar line at the end of the harmonized Downfall solo? I'm not expecting cleanness from him, but I'd like to see him stay faithful to the studio version once in a while. Of all the Youtube vids, he either omits that part or plays some half sloppy tapping stuff. His studio line is far superior to any and all of these.

By "no solos" I basically meant just one like in other Bodom songs.

CodySG

Yeah, it does.
I'm very protective of that song honestly lol.
It kind of bugs me when people list it as the best bodom song or their absolute favortie ect ect basically just because of the solos...
I mean, broken down, they really aren't that great compared to other Bodom solos.
The last one is killer though :p:
But yeah, Kissing the Shadows, Downfall, and a handful of others REALLY hit home with me...
I've always seen it as a song of longing, loving someone who wasn't there, or who was far away (like Kim Gossow :p: )
I do too, but there are other things I see, kind of undertones that probably a lot of others don't get.
Either way, it's still a killer song :D

And I think it's extremely immature and stupid to call any band/musicians "gods". No one is flawless, or better than everyone else. You can think someone is the best or worst, and that won't make it any more or less true. Someone's music is what it is, and opinions will always differ. It's all personal taste, which is to say nothing about you as a person, least of all.

What are Roope's best solos (particularly in CoB, but Stone is fine too I guess, despite being extremely mediocre imo)? Song and if you know, timeframe in the song would be good.
I always hear people praising him but I've never really cared for him. His work in Stone is just average thrash, and he's never struck me as anything more than an above-average player in general.

I can't certainly say which solos he's done in Children of Bodom aside from the second solos in "If You Want Peace..." and maybe "Tie My Rope," but he did do the solo in "Twilight of the Thunder God" by Amon Amarth, and I think it's a pretty damn good solo.

I'm pretty sure that all of the leads in that song stay strictly within the F major scale. Alexi's lead playing has evolved a lot since the early neoclassical albums.

I love COB. They are my favourite band overall. My fave songs are Angels Don't Kill because their melodic side of their music really comes out in this song. It's not as fast paced and really gets into you. My other fave is definitley Needled 24/7 because the intro is F'N BADASS!! lol. I can't get enough of that song for how crazy it is! There are a lot of really good songs by them though. My favourite album is definitely Hatecrew Deathroll.

I try to not listen to one band, even Bodom, for a very long time.
New stuff is kind of getting dull, good every now and again, but really nothing special...
The older stuff still gives me da'bumps though, even more so if I haven't listened to them in a long time.
Really wish they would go back :( at least a little bit...just seems like the whole power metal/melo-death/neo-classical stuff fit better with them than the newer material.
Oh well, we still have 4 *3 if you're an ass* killer CD's + the Inearthed stuff.

I agree with Cody's first point. You'll burn yourself out on any band if you listen to them too much, even if you love them. At best, it will just take longer, but it will always happen. It usually isn't permanent though, if you give yourself a break.
And I say that their next album, which will probably still be in about a year or so, will mark big in their sound. Because they started one way (SW->HB/FTR), then came into a more unique sound (FTR/HCDR), then went even farther in perhaps a bad way to some (AYDY), then figuratively took one step back and two steps to the side (BD).
Which means one of three things will happen with a new album.
1) They'll incorporate their older sound again
2) They'll keep going with what they're doing now, not much change
3) Do something completely different
Obviously, people will vary on which one they want to happen most.

I'm hoping for something new.
Hopefully Blooddrunk was more of a transition album into something new (or maybe a transition back into older stuff).
CodySG
01-26-2009, 10:54 PM
Honestly, as long as it's unique and "Bodom" sounding, I'll be happy with it.
The main thing I miss is the cool leads and melodies of the older stuff. Not that the newer stuff is bad, totally opposite, there isn't a single Bodom song or album that I don't like, it's just the older lead playing seemed to have more memorable stuff, a little more flash and flair, and I dig that.

It feels to me like Bodom has become a 3D image after you take the glasses off.
SW was like that too, between their Inearthed days and about the FTR/HCDR days, when the glasses were totally ON. Then the scene changed with AYDY, and the glasses are coming off again, only it's happening faster this time, and BD is already with the glasses off, and you just see the bluish and reddish images overlapping. It's like they're moving forward and back at the same time, and I see a new unison of old and new coming again.

IMO a band should always "bring it", otherwise they're shortchanging everyone in the crowd. But I agree with your second point, if you don't like a band you probably wont enjoy seeing them live, no matter how well they play.

I suppose bands have bad days aswell as we do.
I went to see Mastadon supporting Slayer, they kinda bored me (then again the first bands i saw live was Iron Maiden so maybe my standards are way too high) But i love Mastadon and i'm sure they are usually much better, it's not that they didn't play good, they played great, but it just didn't seem enough to get the crowd warmed up especially since Amon amarth were on first and accordingly they were brilliant.

You're right, no one is flawless. I'll definitely give them another chance, when they headline with Bodom this tour. Especially since I know I'll enjoy CoB, and I'm definitely not one of those people to leave after seeing the band they like, and ditching the headliner. I hate when people do that.

The band was awarded with the Export Emma award in 2005 for their achievements in exporting Finnish music. Eb? Something Wild was in C# Standard.
No need to bother asking, as they have never played in that tuning. Like you even said, HB through FTR was all D Standard, HCDR was too except ADK and Sixpounder, AYDY was all Drop C, and BD is a bit of both.
EDIT: And if you're talking about the tab on this site by Donkey Fly, he even says it's drop C in the beginning of the tab, and that the tuning thing in the details above is just messed up.

Sweet!
I've seen 'em twice, they're a fun live band :D don't expect musical perfection, but for a show to go to, maybe drink a little or whatever your favorite intoxicant is, and rage with friend, it's pretty cool.
All in all, I say it's a good, fun live show.

I always prefer a more lively and energetic show, even if it's at the cost of some technical accuracy (within reason). To me that's the true rock 'n roll spirit. I go to a show to have fun, not be a critic.

The only thing in greater degree than the pretension and hubris of this post is the amount of laughter it caused from me.
Especially considering the source. Bit sad, really.
And you know that the band in question being Bodom has very little to do with it. This is music, man. Not philosophy, politics, or religion. There's no point in just not having fun and embracing the nature of musicians being performers and entertainers. There's no point in taking it all so seriously or personally.
In any case, I'm out. Won't be back for a while.

Max.
I'm going to say this as a friend.
Get your head out of your arse and stop being a fucking crybaby. You've almost lost at least two friends because you can't stop for one second and see that you're not the only goddamn person on this planet with problems.
If you'd read my post again, you might note that by "grown out of", I was referring to "No longer enjoying listening to them." Not "THEY ARE CHILDISH AND STUPID."
If you stopped blocking your ears and hiding in your tiny little world, you might trying responding in a way that DOESN'T make you sound like someone who would meet Alexi once and then claim to be his best friend to anyone who listen. I saw Bodom. They sucked. They were unprofessional and unentertaining. This is me. My opinion from my experiences. I'm not adversed to band's having fun and enjoying themselves. I love band's who do it. But not at the expense of musicianship and the crowds enjoyment.
Max, honest to god, grow up. You're supposed to be older than me, and I'm so fucking disappointed in how you've dealt with your lot in life.

Also, warning: Large post coming up.
Sinergy, Alexi Laiho and Roope Latvala's power metal group, are really awesome. Check out their myspace if you like power metal and Children of Bodom.

Alright, Jack.
I'm actually going to have the decency to, you know, not bring up personal matters which have no place in this thread to begin with. It would have been nice for you to do the same.
And you know that what I said has nothing to do with Bodom. I don't even like them that much. I simply think they make great music, and having met them a few times, seem like fun guys. Which is what I could say for a lot of bands. You of all people should recognize I always hate it when people act the way you seemed to. The concept of "growing out of" music is just ridiculous to me. But that's my opinion. Granted, you did explain what you meant, sort of.
Just thought I'd clarify that, (though I didn't expect I would have to, least of all to you) and leave it as such.

Same goes for me actually... I might not be therapist material but I'll listen. Here for anyone that needs to.
And to clarify, I like Bodom, don't see myself "growing out of them", but maybe getting burnt out from time to time. Luckily, I have a semi-extensive music collection and can return to them another day.

Yeah, my love for Bodom is too deep to grow out of.
Lots of reasons, but it's like...the one band I find connection to in almost everyway. I can't change who or how I used to be, so I can't "grow out" of that.
Honestly, the only bands I've ever "grown out of" are some of the nu-metal stuff I used to listen to.

Not a huge fan of AYDY but its got some tunes on it
Blooddrunk is a solid album imo, but deviates to a more conventional style imo whereas older bodom, there was a more melodic/classical/show off element to it.
