Are You Dead Yet's my favorite.
Blooddrunk is meh.

+1. I was actually disappointed with most of Blooddrunk, it had 3 good songs and the rest were mehhhhh.

Oh Shize
02-15-2009, 02:33 PM
Meh, Blooddrunk was OK, but I definitely prefer their older stuff. There's no neo-classical awesomeness any more. :(

Plus Alexi has gotten ridiculously sloppy live. He needs to cut back on jumping around like an idiot so that he can concentrate on what he's doing. Once he's become tighter, than he can jump around.

dminishedthingy
02-15-2009, 02:34 PM
I prefer the newer energy in the live shows.
The show would be dreadfully boring otherwise, no matter how tight it sounded.

Oh Shize
02-15-2009, 02:41 PM
I understand what you mean, and obviously I don't want Alexi to stand there like a statue and stare at his guitar neck the entire time, he just needs to cut back on throwing himself about the stage like an idiot.

Every band's gotta have some energy, but I'd just rather they played well too.

02-15-2009, 03:13 PM
Alexi and Roope and all of CoB can be shredding doing triple backflips through hoops of fire on stage while slamming beers and cooking sausage, and with deadly tigers attacking them being beat off by a killer mosh pit and not miss one note in their playing. They're just crazy like that. :headbang:

No.
They are sloppy live.

oddly enough they seem to go into another song before the solos, i hope he can still actually play deadnight warrior and mask of sanity.

McGelie
02-15-2009, 03:49 PM
I remember going to see them and they were pretty bombed. They announced " Are you ready for Silent Night, Bodom Night?" and I almost orgasmed. But they started playing Mask of Sanity. I was a little let down, even though I like that song, but they were too messed up and I was a little annoyed. I understand having a drink before a show to loosen up, but when I go see them I kinda want them to actually sound good.

onetenpercent
02-15-2009, 04:23 PM
I've seen them twice live in the past two years and going again to see them again this year. Obviously they're doing something right. Also though when you go to see Bodom, expect them to be somewhat drunk, it's part of their act. So just drink with em and have a good time. :headbang: Don't go to a show to criticize the band and be a little bitch if they miss a note, lets see you play kissing the shadows in front of 20000 people, sober or drunk...

McGelie
02-15-2009, 04:36 PM
I understand that and I openly admit that I can't play Kissing the Shadows. I don't mind if they are a little drunk, but when I spend money on a icket I don't want to hear them mess up so much. It wasn't a note, it's more like a thousand.

Oh Shize
02-15-2009, 04:44 PM
Exactly.

When my mate saw them, he said Alexi kept ****ing up the intro to Lake Bodom because he was just headbanging like an idiot the whole time. There's also a live video on youtube where he tries to do this, and fails miserabely.

Well, that would have been good, but if you were to look closer, you'd see I bolded and underlined an "I" and "n" in your post, to spell "in". So, it was "Cum in your face". Though, I considered just pointing out there was a Bodom reference in your post, I thought I'd be a bit more creative :p:

Ah yes, the age old question. Here's the simple answer: Minor scales. Earlier work he strictly stayed diatonic. As of Are You Dead Yet? he has began to incorporate more Fully Diminished arpeggios. Just search Youtube for all of the videos of him talking to the guys at Guitar World where he discusses all of this stuff.

Are you referring to Gigantour?

For the Winnipeg show:
Six Pounder
Living Dead Beat
In Your Face
Hate Me!
Hellhounds On My Trail
Angels Don’t Kill
Blooddrunk
Downfall

SO I might be able to get a guy in Czec to make me some Randall modules based on the ENGL Savage and/or the Lee Jackson GP-1000. Which Alexi tone should I go for when I have $500 to blow? :D

ScalyGuitarrist

I would shoot either for the SW or the Hatebreeder tone. The FTR tone (although it's my favorite album) is too treebly for my taste.

Shinozoku
02-28-2009, 09:14 PM
SW was a 5150. HB was the LJ with a Rocktron power amp.

FTR is my favorite Bodom tone ever, but I also like Alexi's sound on Beware the Heavens (from Sinergy :p: ), which was an ENGL Savage. I already plan on putting 5881's in my Randall's power section to emulate the ENGL power amp from FTR though.

Lee Jackson going through the 5150's power section :p:

Basically, I'm looking for which preamp to get a copy of :p: The Lee Jackson (heard from HB up through BD) or the ENGL Savage (heard on Beware the Heavens)

I played with that a little on my SL+ module. Most of that tone comes from the Blackouts though, and I'm already thinking of getting a copy of a J-50BC made and installing the MM04 booster for the pickup tone from the old days :p:

God Knuckleduster makes me horny...

Wow...500 bucks for a model thingy? Really?

Honestly man, I don't know if I'd spend that much...you could find an actual GP-1000 for about the same price...and a 5150 for a bit more.

Can't get near the Savage though lol...

Still, unless you REALLY want it, or if it's not actually 500, I might think if there is anything else it could maybe go to...

It's completely custom, would be compatible with any Randall or Egnater modular amp, and I wouldn't need to worry a bout using a rack :p: Besides, most of the money is shipping and BS like that. It's really just like $200 for the transformation to the module, and the cost of the base module. Plus, it would have all the same components as the GP-1000. And my Ultra XL module kicks the ass of the 5150, MatrixClaw can vouch for this :p:

BUT! If you were in my position, Cody, and you wished to posses Alexi tone in an MTS module, which would you go for? ENGL Savage? Lee Jackson? 5150? Or Marshall 2203KK?

CodySG
02-28-2009, 11:42 PM
Well, I don't really like the Marshall that much. The 5150 is cool, a classic for sure, but if you feel you've got better I wouldn't bother. Honestly, I've really found the GP-1000 to be thin :( I used to want it a lot too, but the more I listen to it the more I realize I like heads better lol.

I do like the Savage :)

BUT! I've been able to get Alexi tones out of every amp I've owned, or at least close enough for me to play some Bodom :D

That's cool that it's custom, but that brings up a different story....

If you could get a custom box O' tone, why would you want to carbon copy someone elses? I would start communications and try to work together to create a beast all your own. Something with a mix of tones that'll sound exactly how you want it to for your music.

BTW, clips of the Randall yet? Or good clips that you know of? It's an interesting amp...I might like to have one some day :D

Very good point :D I've been thinking about the aspects of sound that I like the most from various people, and ideally I'd be using the preamp and Alexi's sound as the basis for my own sound, but once again you have a good point.

And I don't personally have clips, but I know of a place with many good ones :D
http://www.bandslink.com/randall.htm

Not the best, but a helluva lot better than Randall's site. And if you go to the MTS Forum, there's lots of clips strewn throughout. Currently the Salvation Mods (the company I wanna go through) are all teh rage, and before that everyone was hanging on to the p3n0rz of Pete Turley, who enhances the sound the modules already have. Be warned if you eventually get the amp and wanna get the RM100... it weights 70 pounds without the modules in it :p:

Really thinkin hard about the Savage... I love ENGL tone :D

CodySG
02-28-2009, 11:57 PM
Wow, that is pretty heavy lmao!

Some of those clips are pretty nice, and yeah I'd go through a bunch of amps and get something custom.

Maybe like something with the bite and gain of a 5150, the mids and a little treble of like the gp-1000, and a deeper more full bass or something.

Just frankenstein it out, you can base it off of Alexi if you want to, I know I kind of do with mine.

IE, things I've learned from Alexi...I've never had low mids, always noon or higher, and I really don't use a lot of gain on my amps....usually nothing above 1-2 o'clock.

I always find my settings resemble the ones he uses on his KK :p: Mids and treble are almost the same, with the bass usually a bit lower (especially with the Ultra XL). but I know exactly what you mean about learning from Alexi :)

And I think I'd prefer the lower mids and gain of whatever Jeff Loomis used on In Memory (I think a JCM800), with the upper mids of an ENGL SE, and the overall clarity of the GP-1000. I'd also like it to clean up a specific way, with an overdriven tone similar to the "clean" you hear in "My Apocalypse" by Arch Enemy.

:D

I think Jeff scoops a lot, so I think I'm gonna see if there's a specific way it could be wired so that the less important part of the midrange can be scooped out (like with a GEQ) while the high mids are boosted. Maybe a dual-concentric mid knob similar to what's on the ENGL Steve Morse model with low and high mid knobs...

CodySG
03-01-2009, 01:45 AM
That'd be pretty cool!

Yeah, I love the idea of two mid knobs, because there ARE two mid sections in the tone more or less...

Would make EQ'ing amps a lot more interesting :D no more would be the "Recto's have low mids" or "Marshall's have high mids" that would be really cool. I mean, the character would still be there, but you could have a recto sound more like a marshall and vice versa.

I don't think Jeff scoops, but I'm not too sure. I know I checked out his recto settings and the gain was like on noon I think, but not sure.

Yeah, my VHT usually has mids, treble, bass, highest to lowers with treble and mids about the same. I have been messing around with different settings though.

Actually, funny thing, I've been playing my Rev. Jr a **** load lately lol! I basically figured out how to EQ it so it rips, I'm probably going to end up with the Rev+ eventually.

And yeah, I'd like to see more two-mid knob amps. I'm sure it makes the amp harder to EQ though. That's definitely gonna be part of my custom module though :D

And I agree about the keyboards. It's definitely used more for texture nowadays, and was more classical-toned in the early days.

And yes to the sig quesiton.

I think the reason BD doesn't sound the best guitar-wise is because they did some layering with the Duncan Blackouts, and from what I've heard (this seems consistent with the album's sound), Blackouts turn mushy when layered, whereas EMGs (and most other pickups) do not. Luckily Alexi switched back to EMG :D

Fukn Hatecrew :peace:

The Alexi 600 is a good guitar, but try to find one used. The new ones have an LFR and an EMG Hz.

I got lucky, because mine has on OFR and an SD Blackout. It was only available for a 6 month period or so before they changed the specs again.

You know the guitar will be built well as it's an LTD, but I would say compare it to the RR24 (the neck feels different and it has an EMG 81).

LTD still charges about $1250 for the Alexi 600, so if you are buying new, I suggest the RR24. If buying used, see if you can get a good deal on a model with a Blackout.

And Blooddrunk is great. Tie My Rope =

I like Roope better lol.

Maybe not as a guitarist...but he's just so damn cute! I want him in a pocket size so I can just take him out and use him for my entertainment whenever I want.

I can only wish

It's interesting that you're on the subject of Roope. I was researching the ENGL Savage amplifier and as I clicked on the products page of their site I noticed a banana shaped ESP headstock and knew it could only be one person, so I clicked back.

sweet! any idea what model hes using?

Shinozoku
03-23-2009, 12:12 AM
Most people tend to get the SE or the Invader. It might be a Savage though, considering Alexi used them in the early days with Sinergy. There's really nothing about the joining except for that paragraph.

CodySG
03-23-2009, 02:47 AM
Honestly...I think the SE is kind of wank...

Cost waaaaay to much IMO, and I never really vibed with the tone...

I like pretty much all the other ENGLs though, guess it's kind of a blessing to NOT gas for the most expensive model :haha!

Shinozoku
03-23-2009, 03:45 AM
I believe the SE was used on Symphony X's Paradise Lost, and I recently heard Erock's clip of the SE EL34, which was godly.

*drools*

Did I mention I'm GASing for the Blackmore now? I think I prefer it over the Savage... but if I get a module made, it'll basically be the Blackmore Lead channel (with the two modes of gain, mid contour switch, and a tight switch).

CodySG

Blackmore has always been my fav ENGL amp.

It's soooo brutal...but yet, open and clear sounding unlike most ENGL's.

Really love that amp..

i thought michael romeo used a combination of a fireball and a powerball?

marty friedman on the other hand has FOUR (yep, thats right) SE heads

Shinozoku
03-23-2009, 07:46 PM
Romeo uses the SE as far as I know. And Marty used a Blackmore with all the controls at noon last time I heard. I guess he switched...

And yeah, the Blackmore sounds like it would blend well with other amps too, like maybe a Mesa Mark series...

EDIT: From Wiki.
In terms of amplification in the studio, he uses an Engl Fireball as well as a recently acquired Engl SE E670 that is used strictly for recording purposes. Live, Romeo makes use of both the Engl Fireball and Powerball models.
We're both right :D

is anyone else kind of disappointed at how alexi "doesn't like the sound of the neck pickup"? i was just like whoa. i dont see how any metal guitarist couldnt. if i could afford one of his sigs i wouldn't bother simply for the fact that the neck pickup is missing.

viewerfromnihil

I don't like neck pick-ups either, I only use them with clean tones on my Fender Strat.

CodySG
03-26-2009, 01:31 AM
I like neck pups.

But he just doesn't use 'em...the music doesn't really have a ton of need for it.

cloud041089
03-26-2009, 01:32 AM
i just think the neck pickup brings out the beauty of fast arpeggios and scale runs high up the neck. like the intro of "towards dead end" would be nice with some use of the neck pickup.

CodySG
03-26-2009, 01:34 AM
Yeah, but it does lose a lot of the bite that bridge pups have. That's the main reason, it's smooth and fluid and not sharper or bitey.

03-26-2009, 03:37 AM
Alexi/Roope 's tone is sick. It needs no tempering with, such as a neck pickup. Bodom doesn't use them because they don't need them. Simple as that.

rebornmaster9
03-26-2009, 09:56 AM
well you do get better distortion with the bridge pick up.

this has prolly been asked, but im not lookin through 600 pages to find it. Does anybody know what wah pedal Alexi uses? I heard it was the Crybaby from Hell, but i wanna make sure... Or can somebody recommend me a good wah pedal for COB? If it helps, i really liked the wah tone on Hellhounds on my Trail and Roadkill Morning.

CodySG
03-26-2009, 05:04 PM
Playing/singing at the same time, a good musician this does not make.

It's ez.

As for a wah, they're basically allll the same...find one that gels with you. More often than not, it's how the pedal is laid out as why some are so picky.

Persaonlly, I love the WD from Ibanez for metal. Has a crazy wide sweep, EQ, and true bypass. Works for me.

I remember the first time I listened to Bodom. I was sitting on my ass in front of the computer, on Youtube, and I searched for children of bodom in the search engine. My dad told me that they kicked much ass, and I pulled up the video of them playing Lake Bodom live in Seoul.

Ever since then, life has not been the same for me. My jaw dropped instantly from the first intro-riff, and they have been my favorite band ever since then. They were what caused me to down-tune my guitar to D-standard, and it's going well now! Bodom are great stuff, and I still think Blooddrunk was a great album.
