So, any new Bodom news? I listened to Hatebreeder front to back couple of nights ago...was amazing.

Shinozoku
07-19-2009, 11:20 PM
Nope, no news whatsoever. Other than the fact that for a couple of months Roope has been using ENGL cabs.

Also, I'm working on getting closer to a good Bodom-esque tone (for the sake of covers) out of my amp's SL+ module. I have some Sovtek 5881's in the power section atm (blending with JJ 6L6.. very intersting, but the latter smooths the tone out too much for Bodom), and when running at 50 watts and cranking the power section I can get DAMN close :D I'm mostly trying bastardized hybrids of Alexi's Lee Jackson and Marshall settings, and using the Density control on my amp to simulate the "more bass" output he uses on the LJ, and I bring the presence up a bit to add the extra brightness needed.

CodySG
07-19-2009, 11:49 PM
My VHT has always been able to pull out some Bodom tones pretty easy.

I've kind of stopped looking to cover tones though, I just like to find stuff that sounds good and run with it :D!

Should have my herbie in a few days, can't wait to get my grubby little hands on that beast :llama:

Shinozoku

Salvation Mods is almost done with their Diezel mod :p: They have a crunch clip of it up, and it sounds awesome. They're working on a high gain clip for it and should have the update/thread on the MTS forum in a matter of days.

Apparently my vid will be loaded on youtube in 2 hours o.o

Did some random jamming, found a clip that sounded best (which I initially though sounded crappy). You get some breakup from the mic being hit too hard (these are bedroom volumes for the amp :p: ), but that's to be expected of a lapel mic.

Also, you better put up a NAD!

CodySG

You should get the Viper mod for the Framus Cobra, I thought that one sounded pretty kick ass!

The Randall is a really nifty amp, I really like the idea of all the tweaking and what not and all the different mods, pretty cool machine :D!

I intend to :D I also want an ANGEL module (ENGL), but tweaked a bit. Gonna hopefully get it with the crunch and lead channels of a ENGL Blackmore (very doable), and a voicing switch to take it into Savage territory, along with the ENGL contour switch, and maybe a couple of other things.

Have you heard the Terrier mod? :D

Yep guys, that's my Jackson. The bay post is about to end, but i'm all in for partial trades plus cash, and stuff like that. Alexi i know has used a RR1 (customized of course) in this finish, so it's a pretty good find for a COB fanatic. the price is actually quite cheap. i spent the money on the EMGs and having the guitar professional setup to have the EMGs installed. I spent over $2400 on this guy, so it's my loss, someone else's gain.
message me for any questions, i'd be happy to answer them :wavey:

well yeah, i said RR1 customized, but true it was probably a full custom RR. His looks almost the same as mine, but with one EMG 81 and gold hardware. His guitar as you can see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=heVjBCVgGpw&feature=related has solid gold stripes on the wings, whereas mine are pinstripes like Roope's (but gold of course, not white)

the IneartheD stuff is basically what led up to Something Wild. Once they got Janne they were able to really progress musically.

Honestly Bodom has been going downhill very fast. Ever since Alexander left and Alexi hurt his arm bowling they've gone from cool neo-classical influenced metal to poppy stuff thats average at best. I bet that Alexi hurt his playing even more since hurting his arm with that bus incident. He used to be amazing...

Really? Comparing older live vids to the new ones I think theres a noticeable drop in cleaness. I'm not arguing that he doesn't have talent, I think he's quite a talented guitarist. I just think that his injuries have hurt his ability to perform and record over the years.

CoB rules, but I can't help but think how much Alexi Laiho has fallen into the "I've got to be the FACE of CoB" trap. Man, we KNOW you're the frontman, quit spinning your guitar around your neck on stage, and focus on the beautiful guitar work you've always had!

I'm sorry you feel that way...

Children of Bodom has, is, and probably always will be my favorite band. I can connect with the music on a very personal level, and no matter what happens... No matter what they end up becoming, that's something I'll always have.

I'll always have the music.

To those that think cob sucks, or used to like them and don't anymore... Honestly, I say that's fine.

It's one less fan cob has that they don't need.

I don't "obsses" over them, I really don't keep up with the personl stuff. I love the music, and if you don't get it anymore... That's fine.

I do.

Actually, I thought it was pretty damn fine myself :p:

Because of Alexi I:

Can't scoop my mids.

Only use enough gain to get my sound aggressive.

Don't use so much bass that you can no longer hear the bassist in the mix.

Use inverted power chords and lots of major and minor third intervals to add texture to my music.

Love the RR shape and find difficulty playing other shapes.

Use Dunlop Tortex Jazz picks (he uses the nylons, but he introduced me).

Am trying DR strings for the second time (first when I actually knew about tone and feel and whatnot.. the A string is a dud though I think cuz it buzzes like a mofo :haha)

What has Alexi and Children of Bodom done to change/improve your life? :)

EDIT: Due to the epic failure in the past few pages (40ppp) of this thread, I'm gonna listen to Bodom.

Well a lot of this depends on the circumstance, for instance, I scoop mids when I'm playing brutal death metal, I raise mids when I'm playing black metal. Same with the gain, depends on what you're playing. A lot of this also sounds fan-boyish (no offense, man) especially doing things Alexi does... (certain chords, picks, strings, etc.)

I lower mids some for more brutal forms of metal, but I still have them higher than my bass. And I do raise gain a tad too.

The chords: I think they sound awesome, and it's better than just doing the same ol power chords which I was doing before. It opened me up to new chord shapes and therefore added depth to my musical knowledge.

Picks: I was curious as to how the Jazz III's would improve my playing, as they're marketed towards that. John Petrucci uses them too, as do the guys from Trivium (a band I was into at the time and still listen to on occasion). After trying them, I found I preferred them over regular picks. I still switch back and forth from time to time, as I find I improve more when I do so.

Strings: I needed new strings and figured "Why the hell not? Lots of people use them, they're supposed be be great (and taste good too :p: )", so I tried them. The low E had an odd phasing sound to it and of course, the A string. But I'm gonna stick to my Dean Markleys.

Guitar shape: I always thought it was cool, and I wanted a better guitar, and I loved the looks and features of the Arrowhead I ultimately bought. I do want a neck pickup now, but I love the shape and it does put me in the proper classical position when playing and sitting down. Has decent balance too.

I think I'd have to give Alexi the credit for my infatuation with the Rhoads shape, mainly because of watching Sinergy live with Roope. I still pop in the old stuff sometimes and still love it all, I just don't follow anything new with them. I can't even get into the new Warmen stuff! Failed Alexi Fan = Me.

We all love old COB more so than the new stuff but they still are awesome.
I finally got around to listening to Blood Drunk last week.
While it was nothing like the earlier material that I love so much, it still had SOME cool parts to it. I guess it is inevitable for a band to change their sound/style eventually.

And I am pretty excited about finally getting to see the COB gentlemen live on the 19th!

This has also made me phase away from Bodom, or at least going to the COB shows. Most of the fans really suck. It's really funny because my old guitarist and his girlfriend went to see them in concert. They met some guy there who apparently thought that Are You Dead Yet? was their first album. When my friend said that he had been a huge fan since Follow the Reaper and that he loved Inearthed, the other guy said that my friend was a total noob to COB and didn't know what he was talking about.

I think the actual Roope sig is beautiful, the LTD USA one...not so much...

I like the shape and the color, but the fact it's only LTD and those inlays are kind of a turn off to me.

As for a new album, the covers album is coming up, but an actual 'new' album probably not until late next year or year after.

Shinozoku
08-24-2009, 09:02 PM
I don't like the color with those inlays. And it needs binding. I'd prefer the actual black one, preferably with either the H2 and boost or the 81 he used for a while. I'd check the one with the Invader out though.

I'd still go for an Edwards Roope sig if they made one :p: Or ESP, if I had the money...

BTW: the American Roope sig is available in ESP form in Japan

Children of decance is my personal favorite, purely because of the intro, afterwards it's like, average. But the guitar intro, is beautiful.

Ooo, and Trashed, Lost & Strungout, is brilliant all through the song. The whole thing just appeals to me.

And to those who say his voice annoys you, yeah i get where your comming from. I hated it when i first heard it... but it... kinda just... grows on you =D

It's brilliant now, i love his voice.
It's like his vocal cords are having rough sex with my ear drums ^_^
But yeah, some people just aren't into the rough sex-ness of it

Also love Bodom After Midnight and Kissing The Shadows.

^I know what you mean. I like his rugged new style. It's neat, and has a lot of attitude.

You know what I have to say about Bodom though? I'm not a very big fan of Jaska. His style just doesn't make me go "Fuck yeah man, that's so badass." His bass drum tone is pretty nice, but just overall, he seems average.

But I still have an immense respect for that man.

IMO, Jaska is never going to be one of those drummers that make you say wow.

Even if that may be, Bodom has always been about the guitar and 'boards, so I don't think it really has much impact in Bodoms situation.

Touch Like Angel of Death is my all time Bodom favourite.

On the subject of Jaska's drumming, it's defintely not fancy, but it's solid as a rock and all his fills etc are nicely tasteful IMO. With Alexi and Janne going crazy all the time complicated, intricate drum beats are not needed.

^ Yeah I like COB but sometimes it just seems like Alexi + Janne... oh and three other guys. It doesn't seem like they give Jaska enough room for his ability to shine.

CodySG

IMO, Jaska doesn't have a ton of ability to be shining lol.

He's solid, yes, but to me... He's just not all that great

That is true however it just seems like he is just some random guy compared to Alexi. He is fairly quiet in the mix of some songs. I'm not a drummer so

I love those crazy bass fills Henkka throws in, for example in the final chorus of hatebreeder. I wish he did stuff like that more often.

That Warheart intro still makes me go  every time I hear it. Btw, I get to see these guys in 9 days with Black Dahlia Murder and Skeletonwitch. So excited!

My band (who's undergoing a name change) is thinking about covering Punch Me I Bleed, and our drummer listened to it and said "I'm not sure if I could do that." I said "What, the kinda bouncy/swingy hard rock drumming," and he said "Exactly." :haha

I'm sorry, I read "The Children of Bodom thread" not the "Post in this thread if you are a fan of Children of Bodom". It's just my oppinion on the band, bro. Sorry I'm not a fan of annoying shredding and shrieking vocals.

I guess bad though it sounds, I've kind of written off the possiblity of them making another good album. So I'm happy for them to keep doing the novelty stuff.

I liked the energy of the video, but I mean... I don't know... It could have been put together a little more like a video and not a jam session. I'm sure that's what they were going for though, and it is a covers album so that kind of attitude does fit.

I enjoyed it though.

And, just for anyone happening to read, I don't mind if people hate Bodom. I just don't like when no reasoning is given, just one liners. To me that's spam.

Yeah, it's a free forum, open thread, but to actively seek out a thread of a band you don't like, tell the thread you don't like them, then leave is kind of silly.
