I've seen 'em live. It was great, Alexi and Janne kept drinking and making out. Alexi's voice when talking was so nerdy and funny. It eventually cracked though, so he couldn't really growl anymore.

nah i doubt it, unless Alexi starts singing instead of screaming MTV will rarely ever play them (maybe on headbangers ball) but thats really it. Death metal really isnt "mainstream" material. i too like A7X but i dont see Bodom ever going that way. speaking of Alexi singing....can he actually sing? the closest i'v ever heard his voice being clean was on Hatecrew Deathroll during the chorus.

I think its kind of funny how COB prefers their latest albums but their fans like their earliest. XP

They have been getting increasingly popular [you can literally watch the awareness of the band growing] but I don't ever think they'll get to A7X status. For one thing, the lyrics would have to be toned down quite a bit. Second, "hard-core", skulls and cross bones, "rock", and all that are "in" right now, which is probably the only reason A7X MCR and the like are getting the time of day from mainstream fans. Once and if those fads go back out, COB's chances of mainstreamdom are crushed fo sho.

I don't think that Children of bodom will ever become a mainstream success but i think thats a good thing. Its great knowing about a band that normall people arn't aware of yet still have a large fanbase. Plus success can go to peoples head and if they become mainstream succesful they would lose the connection with the fans. Plus there way to heavy to become a mainstream success. However i think that they are becoming more recognised, in finland there in the charts

I don't know you guys...around here everyone knows them. Three years ago if anyone knew where Finland was it would've been a big surprise. Now there's a lot of Bodom fans, especially amongst the 'scene' followers. People's favourite bands around here usually go 'A7x, Slipknot, Bless The Fall, Norma Jean, Bodom, In Flames, etc.' My friend who hasn't been exposed to music and only knows Green Day and Simple Plan, we were at CD Plus in the metal section and she said 'The only band I know here is Children Of Bodom. They're pretty good.' Not that it's bad all these people know Bodom, but I'd rather not have these kids ruining it. Then again I assume it's a trend to listen to these bands and it'll hopefully go away soon.

The change in sound can alienate older fans (I've liked Bodom for about 5 years now) although I don't really mind that because they're newer sound isn't bad at all, and the changing fanbase can do that too.

I think that when a band gets more fans it makes the fans that were already there feel less special. Not in a selfish way, but just a little less special because people like you were rare and now are plentiful. Also one becomes less close to the band because where as it had been you and 50,000 others now it might be you and 200,000 others.
There is also the possibility of the band getting stamped with the "POSER" label. As soon as that happens it is no longer socially safe to be open about your fanship. Well if you care what people think, that is.

+1 Defy. That's just what it is. Before anyone else knew them, it was better because there was more of a closeness to the band even if the chances of meeting them may have been pretty slim, but when the band gets more famous you become more of a number and your chances of ever meeting them are reduced greatly.

Yeah. Most people that I know that don't like metal just don't get the whole thing with the instruments. Like, one friend(girl that likes sappy stuff) I have can't stand screaming, so she hates most of what I listen to. Then I have another friend(girl who likes stuff like Chiodos and Taking Back Sunday, etc.) doesn't mind screaming but doesn't like all the instrumental breaks. She said Bodom isn't bad, but I had her listen to Beyond the Dark Sun by Wintersun, and within 30 seconds she just said she didn't like it.

Oh, and don't feel bad about the headbanging, I don't do it either. That and mosh pits annoy the hell out of me.

The idea that something is bad because it has popular appeal is just idiotic, really. Yes, a lot of songs that have popular appeal may not be to your taste,but that doesn't mean that having a mainstream appeal makes the music bad - all it means is that they appeal to a lot of people, and (by the law of averages) are more likely to appeal to you, too ...I mean, I really dislike most "pop" music, but not BECAUSE it's pop. yea headbangers ball is that once a month type of thing where metal bands are played so MTV cant say "oh we dont only support the mainstream bands, we support the other bands too" which is complete and utter bullshit. headbangers ball rarely ever comes on (or i never see it on). but even when it does come on, most of the bands are screamo, or hardcore bands, rarely any real good talented metal bands. (some hardcore bands are good but most suck in my opinion)

Is there any reason that trivium decided to suck recently? I had a good deal of like for them back in there old album, good heavy metal, nice vocals, good solos, now there just crap, there solos seem egotistic, there music is still good, but its like so far from what it was. I dont know, I just think its cool that all these bands are going through stupid changes and getting worse and COB still remains unchanged and getting better by the day.

Now then, Children of Bodom being poppy...Can't see it happening. I mean, as someone said earlier, they could be considered mainstream, but that's different from "poppy". For something to be poppy, IMO, it has to have a sing-a-long, catchy chorus. It has to be "hooky", if you will; CoB doesn't really have any of those qualities, except in the guitar sense. (For instance, I suppose you could call the repeated riffs in Hate Me! or Are You Dead Yet? as "hooks"...)

Plus, there's no singing. (Not yet, at least) Whenever Alexi decides to do clean choruses, if ever, is the only time that CoB's going to get any possibility of airtime.

The grim reaper does not kill but only collects the souls of the dead. That is another reason why the mv makes no sense whatsoever.

i disagree with the "poppyness" statement. they're a death metal band, i dont see anything "poppy" about their songs especially their older music. their newer music you might consider mainstream maybe because they made a video (and i have yet to see that video on tv only online)or they've been becoming more popular or seomthing like that, but COB pop music? i really dont think so

No, 'cause Gorgoroth isn't death metal. Opeth and Necrophagist don't sound the same but they're both death metal, although different style of DM: Opeth is progressive DM, and Necro is technical DM. Not all bands in a genre have to sound exactly the same. Bodom's a hard one to classify though...

yea headbangers ball is that once a month type of thing where metal bands are played so MTV cant say "oh we dont only support the mainstream bands, we support the other bands too" which is complete and utter bullshit. headbangers ball rarely ever comes on (or i never see it on). but even when it does come on, most of the bands are screamo, or hardcore bands, rarely any real good talented metal bands. (some hardcore bands are good but most suck in my opinion)

Every Saturday on MTV2 at 10:00pm. I enjoy quite a bit of the stuff on there.. last week they had Amon Amarth, and at one point I saw Cryptopsy on there, but I can't believe the screamo bands are allowed... They need to play the Sixpounder vid! That was seriously thier least sucky vid imo... kindof... :haha! I've only seen it, the AYDY and 24/7 vids, I intend to check out the others eventually.

If you needed to describe CoB more accurately, you could say "A fast-paced Finnish metal band with screamed vocals, keyboards, neoclassical influences and amazing guitar solos". Then you're actually describing the band, not just trying to find the world's tiniest genre to shove them into... :)

That's quite tragic, actually. The White Stripes actually placed? I can understand why the magazine would have Korn and Nirvana [by popular demand], but the White Stripes?

not to single you out, but that is what happens when you try and classify a certain band. which is why i usually try to abstain from it, and i dont have any hard time finding music i like because i dont generalize genres. i dont say "all nu metal sucks" or "all power metal's gay" or anything like that. i listen to a band, make my desicion on them without looking at their specified category.
