the only album they did with barret was piper at the gates of dawn, its a trippy album. some of their best songs was: Astronomy domine, Bike, chapter 24, lucifer sam, matilda mother, the scarecrow, the gnome. those are the best songs on that album, the 2 songs i highly reccomend is lucifer sam and matilda mother.

For the Best Syd Barrett (Two t's guys :D) Check out "The Madcap Laughs". It is his stuff after he left Floyd. Tremendous album. I like it a lot better than Piper or his "Saucerful of Secrets" stuff.

Wouldn't You Miss Me? is a good solo Syd album.
PATGOD was a good album too.

Piper at the Gates of dawn is a great album. Don't be expecting it to sound like Dark Side of the Moon though, it's very different. There was a few tracks released on other albums as well. Jugband Blues by Barrett appears on A Saucerful of Secrets and Atronomy Domine appears on Ummagumma. In terms of full albums however, he only did PATGOD.
But if you want to check out his solo stuff I reccomend that you check out 'The Madcap Laughs'. 'Barrett' is another great album. I actually think you can buy them as a double album together, so I'd reccomened that.

Although, Astronomy Domine on Ummagumma was performed by Gilmour, not Barrett.
But yeah, obviously Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, being the only album Barrett was fully apart of, and then Jugband Blues off of Saucerful of Secrets.
Then there's obviously his solo albums, of which I'd personally reccomend 'The Madcap Laughs'.
Finally though, there's the early recordings he did with the Floyd: Vegetable Man, Scream Thy Last Scream, Apples And Oranges, Candy And A Currant Bun, and possibly a couple of others. All good, be sure to check them all.

Scream Thy Last Scream and Vegetable Man are very disturbing tracks. They reflect Syd so accurately. He is basically writing about himself.

A saucerful of Secrets was pretty good, I like Dark Side Of the Moon and Wish You Were Here the most out of all Floyd albums and I know that they don't have Syd in them. Oh who read Inside Out? the book is pretty good, I'm reading it.

It's very good. Not equally as bizarre as Bike, but very similar. The scarecrow, from PATGOD, is my favourite song atm. The album is very interesting, to say the least, and I have only just discovered how influential it was to other bands.

Interstellar Overdrive is the sickest song from the Syd era, I don't even remember if that song has vocals, it still kicks ass.
Stula1031
01-31-2006, 08:54 PM
^No vocals. But it is a sick instrumental. Especialy live. Its even better. It gets even more trippy and its like being in a trance. But my favorite Syd instrumental is Pow R. Toc H. I love that song it is so cool. I like how they use there voices in it to get those weird noises in the intro.

Yeah, but for someone who doesn't know much about any artist, a best of CD is the best way to get into them.

After getting The Piper at the gates of dawn you should definatley check out Syd's solo albums.
They're quite different to his Floyd era songs (i.e. alot less bizzarre). Probably the closest Floyd song soundwise to his solo stuff is Jughead Blues. But they are excellent albums, demonstrating his great song writing abilities-If you don't mind the odd flat note.
I do like the Gilmour era Pink Floyd material (well most of it), but I'd easily take the Syd era over it anyday. Not only becuase of the trippy experimentations-but also becuase of Syd's playfull, witty almost child like song writing techniques . I.e. Bike, The Gnome etc.
Yes Syd Barrett is amazing :D

Yeah, but the guy might've gone out and bought Ummagumma thinking it was Syd who played on it. Whereas if he knew it was Gilmour, he would've just bought Piper, and would've got the full Barrett experience.
So there :p:

As for the albums, Piper at the Gates of Dawn, A Saucerful of Secrets (he's only on one song, but it's a great song and so is the rest of album. Look into this anyway), Madcap Laughs.

he didn't actually go crazy he just had a mental breakdown and had to much or some bad acid a couple of times which is what left him all weirded out for awhile. Not actually insane. he says in his last interview he's completely sound of mind, but just odd. or in his words 'I've got a very irregular head'. Not insane

Syd's playfull, witty almost child like song writing techniques .
That's a big factor in why I enjoy his music so much. Just listen to Effervescing Elephant off of his solo album Barrett.:D
To anyone who wants to get into Syd's music just listen to The Madcap Laughs and Barrett. You'll be immediatly hooked (or at least I was :p: ).

I love the Madcap Laughs! I've heard Barrett is the better album though.... I want to hear here it realy badly. The only thing I didn't like on Madcap laughs is that towards the middle of teh CD some of the tracks weren't even edited to take mistakes out and were rushed through. It must have been stressful especialy for Syd to record it....
It makes me mad that he didn't have more time to record his songs. That album couldv'e been 10 times better if it wasn't recorded so rushed and if he had a band....
I love octopus with the soft machine it's a lot better tahn the acoustic version...
