They're great. I've got the Selected Ambient works 85 - 92. Cool to mong out to when smoking.
He's an interesting dude. Very knowledgable in the field of electronics. He used to build his own synths and he uses self-written software to achieve the effects he desires. I heard he took apart a piano and implemented mechanisms that can be triggered by his computer/sequencer. He owns a tank, also makes music under the names AFX and i think Polygon Window too. I believe he's from Cornwall. His music videos are brilliant. And he's really really ugly.
Get Drukqs or The Richard D. James Album.
This belongs in Other Music btw.

He creates some freaky stuff
I wouldn't know any albums though.

The single most genius electronic music creator/producer ever. Ever. I've never heard of Ventian Snares, but you can rest assured that Aphex Twin is better. While his real name is Richard D. James, he's never created music under that name. Instead, he's used no less than twelve pseudonyms, including Aphex Twin, AFX, Polygon Window, Caustic Window, GAK, Powerpill, Mike & Rich (Mike something-or-other aka Mu-Ziq and Richard D. James), Q-Chastic, Bradley Strider, Universal Indicator (which is rumoured to be several early acid house musicians), and The Dice Man (which he recorded one track entitled "Polygon Window" under before finding out the name was already in use). He has collaborated with director Chris Cunningham for two videos, the uber-disturbing "Come to Daddy (Pappy Mix}" and the absolutely hilarious parody video "Windowlicker". Richard has remixed artists ranging from Autechre to Nine Inch Nails to Beck to Meat Beat Manifesto and everything else you can imagine. Various rumors about him include the following:
-he owns a street-legal tank
-he owns a closed down bank
-he recorded an album, "Come To Daddy EP" in the vault of said bank
-he has a rare disorder that randomly affects him and allows him to see hallucinatory visions as though he were on acid or some other mind-altering drug
-he recorded his album "Selected Ambient Works: Volume II" while he was having an "attack" of the aforementioned disease, and could "see the music" which is why the tracks are sometimes listed as various shades of brown, green, and/or blue
OR
-he recorded his album "Selected Ambient Works: Volume II" while having lucent dreams
-when he used to DJ, instead of playing records on the turntable, he used to spin sheets of sandpaper
Notable Releases Include (with the pseudonum in parentheses):
"Richard D. James Album" (Aphex Twin)
"Selected Ambient Works 85-92" (Aphex Twin)
"Selected Ambient Works: Volume II" (Aphex Twin)
"Analogue Bubblebath 1" (AFX)
"Smojphace EP" (AFX) - known for being quite possibly the biggest rip-off of a Richard D. James recording ever, since two of the three tracks are just static noises... personally, I think it's awesome
"Pac Man" (Powerpill) - a series of 5 different versions of the Pac Man theme
"Joyrex J9 EP" (Caustic Window)
"Surfing On Sine Waves" (Polygon Window)

is'nt Richard D James called the "Aphex twin" because he was born with a twin brother, but the other twin was born stillborn?

My personal favourite is Drukqs, but they're all good. Except for Selected Ambient Works 85-92. I hate that.

I have most of his albums on mp3, will definitely purchase his stuff. The only ones I've really listened to is his Polygon Window release, and I Care Because You Do. Bloody amazing. Get your hands on it if you can.

Surely it can't really be a rip-off as he's the one that did it.
Anyone bother to pick up 'Chosen lords' recently? Fantastic album, I'd highly recommend it if you have some spare change. Been meaning to check out the latest one under Richard James as well. Anyone know if its any good?

'Seven sleepers den' I think its called.

drukqs is his worst album. Hangable auto bulb is his best. Come to Daddy is also amazing

07-25-2006, 01:10 PM
^ Are you kidding? Drukqs is one of the best ones! Hangable Autobulb is two EPs, and Come To Daddy, awesome as it is, is also not a full album.
The worst one in my eyes is the first Selected Ambient Works, though a lot of my mates reckon SAW II is the worst, and I can see where they're coming from as it gets a tad boring. But Drukqs isn't the worst at all, it's got some of the best Aphex tunes on it, like Vordhosbn, AFX237 v.1, Mount St Michael + St Michael's Mount, Taking Control, Cock ver.10, 54 Cymru Beats, etc.

all those tracks are awesome, but they make up like a 1/3 of the record yknow? theres just too many throwaway tracks on druqks. if it were a EP or even a single CD it wud have been alot better.
and ive never found whats so great about SAW either. For chill Aphex tunes i just go to Daddy. Iz-us, Flim, there so relaxing.

Yeah Richard D. James is a really amazing and influential musician. I have the Come To Daddy EP. and SAW 2, but have heard most of his other work as well. Anyone know of any similar artists? People always assume that if you like Aphex Twin you'll like all these rave techno groups, but I don't find that to be true...

Autechre, Venetian Snares and some Squarepusher are all pretty similar. Lots of stuff from the Warp and Rephlex labels, basically.

Ah Mr. James! The man is an absolute genius. I dunno that the Come To Daddy clip is as bad as Rubber Johnny, which is technically a clip. Aparently 'Dillinger Escape Plan' do a fairly decent cover of Come To Daddy. Havent heard it myself, would probably be a bit lacking I think, especially in the drums department. Buddyhead.com described drukqs (sp?) on one of their 50 best albums lists as "what music sounds like in alien titty bars" lol.

That DEP cover is pretty cool. Don't worry about the drums, there's no such thing as a DEP song that's lacking in the drum department.

I need to download it I guess, I watched the live performance of it and it didnt convince me.

I just saw drukqs going for a decent price at a store. I've got almost the full Aphex Twin discography on my laptop but not a single cd, so Im considering getting that. Is it worth it?
^ Yeah Drukqs is pretty good, it's a bit inconsistent like most double albums but some of my favorite Aphex tunes are on it.

I am bumping a pretty old thread but I don't care. Anyway, I got Chosen Lords and it is great. I think it was made entirely on synthesisers rather than computers which makes it different.
Next I think I want to get the Richard D. James album or Selected Ambient Works : 85-92 but I will need to find them for a good price first. :(

Richard D. James and I Care Because You Do are hands down the best Aphex Twin albums.
The guy is pure genius. Listen to the track Alberto Balsalm. He samples the flick of an empty lighter and a heavy door being stopped and uses the sounds as percussion. He also plays a hotel room radiator.

You wouldn't believe how much I worship this guy.
I would recommend:
I Care Care Because You Do
Selected Ambient Works (both)
Polygon Window (under the name of Polygon Window)
Windowlicker EP
His more ambient stuff is great stuff to get wrecked to where as his more hectic stuff (vordhosbn, come to daddy) is such intense and insane music.
Richard D. James = God.
Venetian Snares = Almost God.

Getting ripped and listening to the songs are insane!!!! when your high you just understand why Richard made the music.
I would suggesting hittin the Chronic and listening to:
Alberto Balsalm
or
Windowlicker
those are the songs i feel are the best to listen to while under the influence of herb...
I rarely smoke, but when i do i am sure to listen to Aphex Twin.

Depends what you're into really. If you like the elements of Ambience best then I suggest SAW II but if you like the melodic approach then I'd recommend the Ruachard D. James album. Drukqs is probably my favourite of his releases but I think it would be best listened to after the other major releases.

I find it to be but SAW II is more true to Eno's description of Ambient music. Very little percussion used on that record but it is quite amazing.
