Does anybody remember Kim Thayil? He was the guitarrist from Soundgarden. You know, the dude who looks like Jean Reno from 'The Professional', wore a beret, sunglasses, huge beard and long hair.

Anyway, does anybody know where he is / what he's doing these days? I know he did a record or two with Pigeonhead after Soundgarden's break up (one record in 1997, another in 2000 if I'm not mistaken), but I don't know anything about his other bands 'The Presidents of the United States of America' and 'Dark Load' nor do I know if they still live. I thought Kim was an excellent guitarrist and he's one of my musical hero's. So I'd kinda like to know what he's up to these days (if anything)... that is if anyone has any idea.

A big point I made in the beginning of the thread. :p: But seriously, nobody knows what he's doing now? VH1 caught up with him a couple years ago, but I'm looking to see if he's actually doing anything now that I can listen to, you know? I love his style.

he guested on probot.
But my guess is that he lives in a seattle apartment by himself. His daily activities include drinking beer, eating pizza and watching tv. ANd he wont ever have to work a day in his life ever again... I admire that man, i want his life.

He is hardly involved with much music these days....He gets his PA to buy all the films listed for oscar nominations then watches them, I know that much....But tis a shame he's not riffing these days :(

I fear you may be right. I asked my uncle who's been in the music business for 30+ years (he's a great guitar player, owns his own studio that I visit all the time, etc.) and he said after Soundgarden he was probably rich enough to live the rest of his life without having to work, so he's probably doing nothing.
I would like to think that such an inspired (and inspiring) musician like Thayil would want to keep making music even in his spare time. But I guess I'm wrong. Kudos to him for writing the stuff he did though. Thanks to everyone who responded.

There is NO way that he could just stop playing.
OK, he can't be assed touring or recording, but he will still be playing.

Well that doesn't do fans of his like me any good if he doesn't put anything out for people to hear.

Wow... I figured one of the grungeheads around here would've gotten this by now.
So Soundgarden disbanded in 1997.
Thayil helped a committee (including Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic) organize the 1999 World Trade Organization riots in Seattle.
He was put in charge of the A-sides Greatest Hits album for SG, as well as the B-sides set which has yet to come out.
According to people close to him, including former SG members, he's just relaxing... finally out of the spotlight.

Yeah I already knew about the WTO event. I never heard about a 'B-Sides' though. When is (or was) it due out? I bet I'll never see it at this rate. ;)

But I'm pretty sure he's just sitting at home enjoying the quiet life and his large quanities of dollars.

Yeah he basically eats pizza and drinks beer but don't forget his contributions to the Probot cd. He played a pretty sweet solo on one of the tracks and some rhythm on another I believe.

But you resurrected a thread from three years ago, which means that the original posters in this thread would have had to wait two years for that to happen.
