Can somebody please tab all of Spell Of The Gypsies? I've been looking for the backing (acoustic/nylon) guitar for ages, but all I can find are the first 40 second and lead guitar.

Distortion, probably a compressor, wah, delay, maybe chorus, and I think whammy, not sure though. I haven't listened to the song in ages.

Yeah, it is three to four albums a year. :)

Last one came in january, this one in may and next one will probably come in the autumn, but who knows. At least he's productive.

After looking at the track-list, I'm thinking this is going to be avant-garde and metal. Probably some rock shred as well.

Minkaro
04-28-2009, 02:20 PM
I'm convinced he only goes to the studio to say hello to people, and comes out with an album made.

Hope this is a good album after the disappointing (IMO) Slaughterhouse and Albino Slug.

Penn100
04-28-2009, 02:43 PM
Albino wasn't really a disappointment. I mean, there was plenty of stuff to improve, but two of his best songs came out of that album- The Redeem Team and Siege Engine. Slaughterhouse on the Prairie wasn't very good though.

Hmm, the cover looks similar to Electric Tears imo.

Minkaro

Two good songs on an album on thirteen is a 15% success rate.

Penn100
04-28-2009, 02:57 PM
True dat.

But then, other than Bansheebot, Electric Tears, and Colma, it's not like Buckethead's albums tend to have a 100% success rate, those three are among his most balanced albums, with mostly equally good songs, but if you look at... say Crime Slunk Scene, it's not that top notch with all songs.

Minkaro
04-28-2009, 03:08 PM
Yeah, I get you. It just felt to me like he gave up halfway through Albino Slug though.

ChaosMaker911
04-28-2009, 06:12 PM
the way i see it, his albums usually have one or two great songs, and a lot of weird stuff (or crap...)

but the man comes out with like 4 albums a year, so its fine. Its part of what makes buckethead buckethead. I feel like hes more dedicated to just making music than anyone else.

Siggelump

I find Crime Slunk Scene to be awesome, didn't think so at first though but it's not as weird as it seems the first time.

Btw, I hope you guys have heard the extended Forgotten Trail from Albino Slug which came up on iTunes a while back.

(You could always support him by buying it though) :)

It's awesome, pretty much 8 minutes of awesome soloing.

Edit: AWESOME!

Baby Joel

I prefer Forgotten Trail to Siege Engine. Siege Engine sounds too much like Soothsayer to my ears.
I love Redeem Team, Pink Eye, Electric Bell Blanket, and Symmetrical Slug.
But I think Albino Slug as a whole resembled Crime Slunk Scene too much.

Yeah, if the extended version would be on the album, it would probably be the best song on there, but Forgotten Trail on Albino Slug is only 1 minute long.. Definitely feels like something is missing on that version. :)

However, Siege Engine is still awesome.

Yeah, I like it as well. However, since Lebron and Lebron's Hammer got released earlier than the album for free it may seem like those songs didn't count as songs on the album, if you know what I'm saying. :haha And by that, they judge it by all the other songs.

Nacho Cheese!
04-30-2009, 04:19 PM
Yeah, they were about the best on the album but the rest of the album is still fine.

Penn100
04-30-2009, 07:41 PM
Yup, can agree that the Lebron suite were the best songs. Didn't really like the album very much. Premontition was pretty cool, tho.

I would really enjoy another Electric Tears'ish album, with a following tour. That would be friggen' sweet. But everything that Big B makes is worth listening to.

I would personally love that. He needs to make another slower album like Electric Tears or Colma. Even if there isn't a tour after words the album itself would be worth it.

The album seems to be very good, the "weirdness" seems to be kept to a minimum. Someone posted a review of the album on Buckethead.tk:

(It's in the first post, so I didn't copy+paste it if anyone doesn't want to read it. :))

Loving this record.

It's on Demonoid. I've uploaded it to Mininova and TPB too, but I'm a bit of a torrent noob so not sure if it'll work etc.

It's like a mix between his softer stuff with a little bit of heavy riffage in there too.

Minkaro
05-02-2009, 10:51 AM
I've only been able to find 10 songs on Youtube, but I'm listening to them in a quicklist now. I'll edit my thoughts in:

Broken Mirror - I love the really understated lead playing in this. 3:15 is amazing.

Big D's Touch - This is really nice. Definitely something for a relaxing playlist.

Separate Sky - Moving away from the ballads now. Awesome solo, I love when the riff underneath it speeds up. The killswitch part is cool too.

Dawn Appears - Those...I think it's keyboards...in the background at the start give this song a beautiful atmospheric feel. More understated lead playing too.

A Real Diamond In The Rough - Whilst the earlier songs were nice and relaxing, this one's unfortunately a bit dull until about halfway through. The tone on the solo is amazing.

Sundial - Over too fast for me to make my mind up.

Squid Ink - Nice and relaxing. There's an odd air of menace about the last riff though.

Four Rivers - I think now is a good time to point out how good the drumming is. Whereas the drums almost distracted you from the rest of the music on Colma, they sit wonderfully underneath the guitar here.

Allowed to Play - Again a short one, but what's there is simply stunning.

Formless Present - The...what do you call it...wibbly wobbly effect (I can't remember the name...Flange?) makes it strangely unsettling. It's not full scale Buckethead weirdness though. This could fit on a Death Cube K album...shut up, I know he is Buckethead, you know what I mean <_<

Squid Ink Part 2 - Not online yet.

The Miracle of Surrender - Not online yet.

The Return of Captain Eo - Almost like ... on Population Override, a nice bluesy piece to lift the mood. Wait, blues lifting the mood? MADNESS!

Obviously I'm missing two songs there, but this is an absolutely fantastic album. There isn't a single song I dislike. I'm hoping The Miracle of Surrender is a Machete-esque song, because I think another really good solo would be brilliant.

Nacho Cheese!

I love the new album, even though I haven't heard two of the songs (no Youtube uploads). Really like it, it's got that moody Electric Tears'ish atmosphere, cool to hear Big B bring out the 7-string (detuned 6-string?), too. And, as Minkaro mentioned, the drums are kept more at a reasonable level on this album, I thought they were a little too loud and accented on Colma.

I sure am gonna put this one in my cart when I make my next TDRS order. Great job by Big B!

he sure does!
listen to 'allowed to play' at .021

i think he also used a 7string on the 'Cuckoo clocks of hell' album
not 100% sure though :)

Baby Joel

i'm pretty sure it's a 7string tuned down half a step
at 0.11 you can clearly hear it's an open string he plays
so it can't be tuned so low, just half step :

Sorry to divert attention away from the fantastic new album, but I'm just listening to Shin Terai's "Unison," which Bucket plays guitar on, and it is fantastic. I've decided to put my new Buckethead stuff into a small playlist, which culminates in the new album. The playlist includes:

Shin Terai - Unison
Science Faxtion - Living In Another Frequency
Zillatron - Lord of the Harvest
and of course: Buckethead - A Real Diamond In The Rough.

I have a question for those of you who play the Jordan solo. How do you do the guitar break right before the solo? I play it by tapping my fret hand fingers on the first two and then tap with my picking hand on the third but I'm curious as to how rest of you play it.

Baby Joel
05-18-2009, 01:57 AM
You mean the tritone interval stuff, right between the verse/chorus and the solo? I do 3-string sweeps.

Nacho Cheese!
05-18-2009, 07:17 AM
Yeah, that part.

I don't think sweeps sound right. It has a tap sound to it. Sweeps would be easier to do(cleanly) though.

ChaosMaker911

for that part, buckethead uses hybrid picking, which is what i do also.

for each series of 3 notes, pick the first one, pluck the next with your second finger, and the third note with your third finger.

Judging from the names on the track listing, Buckethead integrated his acoustic/ambient chill songs onto Diamond and then put all his idiosyncratic weird stuff on this one.

And everyone thought we were getting a break from the absurdity.

Geek UK

Says on the Wiki that it has a similiar sound to some of the recent Dan Monti productions, so could be another ambient style album. Probably not though.

Got the cover on there too now.

Am I the only one who noticed his hair in that video? He's kinda got a Muslim woman thing going on there... like he's wearing a hijab.

I liked the use of Whammy in the second "chorus"! Bucket should use it more live.

Seems like he's not using the twin diamond plate Rectos anymore either... looks like he's using a Stiletto Deuce with a backup? I like the change. Also seems like a new Les Paul, this one has silver hardware and different killswitches. It looks "cleaner" than his previous models, too.

The way I see it, the majority of his music can be divided into weird stuff and ambient music.

Ambient-Colma and A Real Diamond in the Rough. If you really liked these two, go for Electric Tears or Death Cube K

Weird Stuff/Shred-The Cuckoo Clocks of Hell, Giant Robot, Monsters & Robots

Decoding Bansheebot is riff-heavy

I Love My Parents is very emotional. :)

It's on Giant Robot and Bucketheadland vol. 1.

I can't bother to listen through all these songs right now, but at least they have emotional parts (IMO):

Big D's Touch - A Real Diamond In The Rough
Premonition - Slaughterhouse on the Prairie
Forgotten Trail - Albino Slug
Dawn at the Deuce - Albino Slug
Lotus Island - Inbred Mountain
Lurker at the Threshold (part 1-4) - The Elephants Mans Alarm Clock
Found Body - Dawn of the Deli Creep

Songs from Acoustic Shards
Songs from A Real Diamond In The Rough

The shred is pretty much non-existant!

aaaaand lots of more songs! :)

Man, I really want him to start bringing Brain back into the studio. I mean, the drumming on the last few albums is nice, but it sounds so much better with an actual drummer and not a drum machine. Brain's additions to A Real Diamond in the Rough were incredible.
Also, I feel that Buckethead should bring in an actual bassist. And not Les Claypool or Bootsy Collins, both of which I love, but that would make the music too funk orientated. I want a bassist that can write some pretty awesome licks and backing stuff that will really help out Buckethead's lead work.

But his music is still awesome. :D

Anyone checked out Bucket's tribute to MJ on his website?

A very quiet acoustic piece, one guitar... I like it alot. A bit of a Spanish influence, as most of his acoustic stuff tends to be. I figure he'll be playing it at his upcoming shows.

It also sort of avoids some of his more typical motifs (such as the 1-4-5 progressions) and the lick of death.

hmm definitely fits the riffy ness standard i want, seems a little bit slow and post rock, even a little less creative than most other things ive heard by him. idk something about it is just idk maybe a little boring to me? any other suggestions? runner up perhaps? ha

edit: i think its almost as if its a little less creative and more normal in terms of composition and what not. when i think of buckethead i think of like all kinds of crazy wierd stuff. this ones sounding like some of paul gilberts instrumental stuff but with bucketheads own spin. not sayign its bad, but i like my buckethead to be weird and avant you know? it almost seems like buckethead is settling and just making riffs and stuff instead of extremely unique crazy groovy stuff you know?

Have you heard 'Bucketheadland 2'? It's chock full of crazy ****.

Decoding the tomb took a while to grow on me, I'm talking nearly 6 months. Now it's one of my favorites. Maybe try 'Peppers Ghost', it's along the same lines.

Solo to night of the slunk (Cd version) and 3rd solo in jumpman (CD version too) are some of his best solo's ever IMO.

It annoys me when he improvises solo's because they're never as good as on the CD.

Saw Buckethead for my first time at All Good Festival this year in WV. Man that dude can shred. He also gave out a bag full of presents to people in the front row.

I'll admit he does a good solo on that live, but im talking about the proper 'shred songs' like Nottingham lace, soothsayer, jumpman, night of the slunk, binge and grab etc.

Personally I don't care for his shred. It has its places where it is okay but it isn't near as nice as other shredders. His slower music though just kicks ass. Thats just my opinion though. Which I think some here are forgetting what griff said was an opinion. So he can't really be incorrect like Bub said.

Completely agree with you. Although the Binge and Grab with Deli Creeps live (Its the 1990 one or whatever), Buckethead does some great improv licks and stuff.
I love listening to Buckethead's bluesier and quieter solo's improv'd. Most the Population Override and that kind of stuff.

That's his best heavy, chaos, riffy album imo, without real solo's on it.

Ok, just saw Bucket in Aspen. Amazing as always, but he has seriously gotten better. Here's some copy pasta of my review from the .tk boards. I didn't want to write that all out again, lol.

---

Hey guys,

Just got back from an amazing night in Bucketheadland. I've always regarded Bucket as my favorite guitarist, but he just blew me away last night. Every song, every note so perfect. I don't think I saw one minor mistake all night.

Anyway, on to the review/story. I show up at the Belly Up around 5:00, doors open at 8:00. I meet some kids that traveled all the way from Missouri to see Buck, they were pretty cool. They ended up giving Bucket a disembodied pickle and punching nun that Big B started playing with. Pretty soon all the regulars show up from previous shows, I'm not sure if they are on the .tk but I saw snubnog there (Hi!).

On a side note I just have to say what a great atmosphere Buckethead shows are. Just chilling with other fans, it's great. You guys are the best.

The Belly Up is really a great venue, so small that if you're in the back you can feel like you are still pretty close. However this time they had some wacky projector and screen in front of the stage. They wouldn't allow us in front of it to wait and get a spot, pretty lame. This happened between Wolff and Bucket too (Nobody was happy about this). Anyway, Wolff wasn't bad. I can respect the fact that he is very creative but I guess he isn't my cup of tea.

On to Buckethead. Comes out, opens with NotS, amazes all. He did play a solo to it, albeit a short one. I'll do my best to provide a setlist, but I'm terrible at remembering all the songs.

Night of the Slunk
Crash Victim
Buckethead's Toystore
The Redeem Team
(Really starting to get fuzzy here ;D)
The Embalmer
Fountains of the Forgotten
New Intro Song 09
Siege Engine (Short Version)
New Song
(Probably another 3-4 songs before toys)
Toys
Jordan
Beat It/Medley/Jam
We Can Rebuild Him
Soothsayer and wave goodbye!
(I obviously forget about 5-6 songs at the moment, sorry guys!)

Really great show, Bucket is getting even better than before (If that's possible for him, you know, being the best and all.) I'm uploading tons of videos at the moment, all have great video quality but some are a mess audio wise. I brought a new camera to the show along with my old one and its mic left a little to be desired, sorry about that bots! I'm looking into finding a way to repair the audio, I'm going to hold off uploading those videos in the meantime. I'll try to update this post with videos as they are uploaded.

The Embalmer posted The Embalmer (LOL, how confusing) already in this section, I'm just going to repost it in here for now before the others are uploaded.

Here are some pictures from the show, please excuse the watermark. In the past I had some issues with people claiming that the pictures I took were their own, overall a bad experience. Sorry about that, hope you guys understand.

Model of LP?
Where to get Stormtropper head?
PUPs?
Toggle switch location and button for old toggle?

I know Im asking a lot...but I seriously love everything about the guitar

You'd have to build it yourself.
Oversized LP body, Baritone neck with ebony no-inlay fretboard, white hardware (Powder coated), white body and black binding, the stormtrooper head would likely come from the head of an action figure, and just drill and hole in the back. etc etc.

I doubt there are any. :/ All I know for sure are 27" scale length, mahogany body and neck, ebony fretboard, and the pickups (I think) are Dimarzio Tone Zone.

Holy mega crap. Listening to 'Time' by the Deli Creeps for the first time. AWESOME. I'm definitely getting this album.

EDIT: Listened to some other songs of the album. Why aren't any of them as good as 'Time'?

Yeah that's a great album!

Just a quick correction, though: He has a tone zone in the bridge and an air norton in the neck - both are DiMarzio, obviously. I believe he also has Gotoh tuners, though don't take my word for that... I'm not even sure why I think that.

I think Buckethead's shred stuff was ALOT better during the '90s... seriously, let me dig up this video of Animal Behavior. Just flawless.

So guys, i discovered this AMAZING band, some of you surely know it, it's called Banyan, and on their "Anytime At All" album there are a lot of guest artist, including Flea and John Frusciante from the Chili Peppers , Nels Cline (excellent guitarist, you should check him out) and, yes, BUCKETHEAD.

He features in 2 songs:

Early Bird (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6-AhFNhQ0Q)

and Sputnik, which I couldn't find on Youtube :3. Both egreat songs, I even dare to say that Early Bird is one of my top 5 favorite Buckethead songs, and Sputnik's great too...

Anyway, i been learning some parts of Early Bird by ear, but I would be really grateful if someone could tab one or both of these songs...

There is a video with a pretty tall and skinny guy, but it's not Buckethead. ^^ If that's the same video that your friend watched.. Buckethead was only 15 when he was taught by Paul Gilbert and the guy in the video was clearly older.

Edit: It's on YouTube somewhere, can't seem to find it though.

I love when he breaks out into the really long fast part. He gradually builds up speed, then just starts shredding like crazy. I also like when the drums kinda fade out in the background and it's just him shredding. It's soooooo awesome.
