I'm gonna see BH for the first time July 28th here in Buffalo, NY with a bunch of friends. I can't wait :D

I hope he plays "Nottingham Lace".

I want to go see him but it is hard because of no shows near me. :(

To teh pplz that are going to see hm soon, here's the setlist he did at the show I saw in February:

1. Night of the Slunk
2. Transmutation
3. He played a 10 minute jam that I didn't recognize
4. Jordan (complete with a modified version of the Guitar Hero II solo)
5. He did the robot and played with his nunchuks for about 2 minutes
6. Arc of the Pendulum
7. Ghost Host
8. Soothsayer w/extended guitar solo
9. Fountains of the Forgotten
10. Asylum of Glass
11. Turbine
12. He gave out toys for about 5 minutes
13. Him and the beatboxer jammed for about 15 minutes
14. Gory Head Stump 2006: The Pageant of the Slunks
15. Last Ride of the Bozomobile (extended)

Then he did a fake ending, and came back for his encore:

16. Park Theme w/extended solo

His setlist will probably be something similar to this.

ok, this is a dumb question, but is the buckethead story true?
The buckethead story is that when he was a kid he had a very poor family and he couldnt go to school cuz he didnt have enough money. They had a barn that he always went to to visit his best and only friends, his chickens. and he would play them songs on his guitar when he went to the barn. and the he met some jerk kids who were mean to him and stuff and brought his chickens to kfc and made them kentucky fried chicken. and then they left the kentucky fried chicken at the barn and buckethead was miserable and buried the chicken and had a funeral for them. Is this true? and please dont badmouth me:)

petrucci_owns86
07-06-2008, 04:51 PM
That's for you to decide... I'm not gonna tell you whether it's true or not...

but it probably isn't

Brian Carroll is probably just a guy who is great at guitar and wanted to create an interesting persona about him, so he became Buckethead and made that story.

So I got bored a couple days ago and did Buckethead's version of This Is Halloween in GP5.

You'll all like the second half.

PM if you want it, it's also on the site under that name.

EDIT: Now I'm working on Spider Crawl. Telling you where to scratch is a pain in the ass to do, especially in GP. So this one may take awhile.

Well it's kinda coming along nicely.

Right now though, I'm working on a real-life Decoding The Tomb Of BansheeBot medley. It's going to be a bit hard to play, but hopefully will sound nice once I'm done. I just need to take GP5 drums and put them in another program, and probably take the bass from GP5 as well. I can play some bass (four years so far), but I'm not a good tabber at it. So yes, this 'project' will probably be the longest I've done so far, but I think the end result's worth it...

So.... Has anyone confirmed who Buckethead actually is? I mean, I know about the whole Brian Carroll thing, but I just don't know if anyone knows for sure. It would be cool to actually know who he is.... But anyway, he is still a badass, and quite possibly the best guitarist in the world. Listen to Soothsayer :haha

I agree. He has so much songs that are (in my opinion) better than Soothsayer, but they hardly get talked about. :( One of my favourites would be 'Volume 05 Track 01' from ISOT. A real gem! :)

So, I got the new Guitar World magazine in the mail today. There is an article on Chinese Democracy which includes a bit about Buckethead. :D

He is inspired by his personal built chicken coop in the studio, dog ****, and...funniest part(well, the dog **** wins but still) a personal TV to watch hardcore porn and record.

I haven't read all of it yet but I have been so excited that I had to get on here. :)

Edit: Read rest of it, must say that it was very little on BH but it was a fun read.

Also, I am working on tabbing Spell of the Gypsies but I don't know when I will finish it. Any information anyone can give me to help tab it? I know that he tuned down a half step for most of, if not all, the Electric Tears album.

I have also heard that he only had two guitar parts in all the songs. Anyone able to back that up?

Hahaha this is pure victory!!!

What month is this issue for? Is it the one right after the one about Hendrix's Ladyland?

EDIT: Also, I think he had more than just two guitar tracks on Electric Tears. Listen to Padmasana, I hear a phased electric, a lead electric, and an acoustic. I think :p:
Also, as far as I know, he tunes down a half step for the majority of his material, which includes Electric Tears.

October 08. I think the last one was about Hendrix's Ladyland but I can't remember. It has very little to do with buckethead really but it has a little about him its mainly about Chinese Democracy which has a little about him.

I know, I am thinking the same for Spell of the Gypsies. It seems to have three guitars at some moments. And I also think it is down a half step.

I'm pissed. I got this issue today, and on the side binding it says Slipknot * Buckethead * Stevie Ray Vaughan.

On the cover it says "Buckethead - plus: a complete history of masked guitarists!" and doesn't mention Chinese Democracy one bit.

BUT - in the issue, not only is the "complete " part changed to " brief, " it's one page long, and Buckethead isn't even mentioned!

In fact, the only part of the issue that I can find which talks about Buckethead, is a little subset column as part of an 8-ish page feature on CHINESE DEMOCRACY.

Although Crime Slunk Scene is a good album. I personally, am tired of hearing about Soothsayer. That is all anyone talks about it is tiring. Not to mention I think he drug the original solo out way too long and could have done better. 7 minutes of a solo that repeats a few things while once in a while adding something new. The song is still great but he could have done a better job with the solo.

I don't dislike Soothsayer I love the song. I'm just saying that after hearing a thousand some people blabber on about nothing but Soothsayer ignoring all his other work it is tiring. Plus, I think he could have done better on the solo. He actually does better live on it.
Yeah, you're right. Sometimes I think it's the only BH song people have heard. Anyone like, say, Computer Master? :haha

And yes, he usually extends the song live. At least when I saw him, it was probably about 10 and a half minutes.

I know, that is my main problem with the song. So many people over look the other music.

I have stopped work on Spell of the Gypsies though btw. I will continue it sometime but it will be a while. So if anyone was waiting for it you might as well just not think about it because it will be a month(approx) before I start back on it.

Soothsayer is good. Not my favorite though. I personally think Nottingham Lace is 10 times better. But you guys are right, that's the only song people really talk about. I would say his more popular songs would be: Jordan(thanks to GH2), Soothsayer, Nottingham Lace, and Welcome To Bucketheadland, in that order.

I saw Buckethead last night...It was incredible. Anyone who hasn't seen him live and has only seen YouTube videos, trust me, there's nothing like being a few feet away from him while he's playing some of your favorite songs. And his tone is SO much better when you're right there and you can FEEL the song in your chest when he's playing. I left the club and couldn't hear anything, but I wouldn't have had it any other way :D

I didn't recognize all the songs he played, but the ones I did know were: Night Of The Slunk, Botnus(He opened with those two), Goblin Shark, Ghost Host, Asylum Of Glass, Soothsayer, Brewer In The Air, Welcome To Bucketheadland, and Jordan. I was praying he was gonna play Nottingham Lace but he didn't :(

Another thing I wanted to point out is that BH seems to have a new guitar. He has a white les paul, but this one isn't as customed like the other one. The head stock is normal black, it has a gold finish on the tuners and the bridge, and I don't remember what his bridge pickup looks like, but his neck pickup is black, a double coil humbucker. And he has a white guitar strap now :D

Here's him playing Soothsayer last night. I had goosebumps the whole song. I just remember sitting there staring at him the whole time thinking, "...Wow". Hopefully someone uploads Asylum Of Glass from the show, it was way better than the album version(which is still good).

By ISOF, do you mean In Search of The...?

Because if you're referring to those albums, I don't really have any favorites. A lot of the songs I don't like.

But I do love Blue Marbles Moon from Vol. 2.

It could be new. It probably isn't though. He has lots of guitars, it just seems like he prefers his white Les Pauls more than anything else.

I'll have to watch the video to see if I recognize this guitar. He had one of his white ones when I saw him.

EDIT: I watched the video, that's one of his white ones. Did you happen to take any video of him with this other Les Paul?

Which track is "Blue Marbles Moon"? I just have it by tracks and not by the names from the forum or where ever the names were from.

He uses multiple Custom LPs but I don't remember ever seeing one with a Black Neck PUP. Then again I don't pay too much attention to his Neck PUP. Usually I look at his picking hand or his fretting hand and not the guitar.

I figured you just made a mistake. The letters are right next to each other.

Blue Marbles Moon I believe is either track 4 or 5 on Vol. 2. Whichever one it is, it's about 10 and a half minutes from what I remember. It's played with a fairly clean sound on the guitar, and Bucket's using beautiful progressions throughout the entire song. There's about one of those on every ISOT album, I like those the best. Eye of the Storm, the 19 minute one, on the other hand, is about 17 minutes of shred. I'm pretty sure about halfway through it I was thinking, "at this rate they're gonna find my brains all over the walls by the end of the song". Whenever my iPod shuffles to that song (which rarely happens when your music library is over 4600 songs :haha) I always skip it. I can't handle that much shred.

I still don't have the balls to try listening to the Butcher's Last Dance, the final 40+ minute track from ISOT.

As far as his guitars go, I've only seen him with the guitars you guys mentioned already. That and his acoustics, you can't forget those. So maybe he does have a new Les Paul. Btw he's used orange sunburst Les Paul's when he was in GNR for that short period of time.

For the drum beat yeah...it is, at least so far(30 minutes in). The guitar changes up and all. At 27 minutes it gets pretty good for a little while.

There are multiple different ways you can have it(if I am correct.) You can have it so when it is in it gets kills the sound or you can have it like a switch. Press it in and it is off, press it again and it is on.

You can also get it in a actual switch(Tom Morrello[sp?]) or like BH with a button.

Ok then, after removing the tone pot.

Unscrew open the guitar jack and the back of your guitar(if that makes sense). You should be able to see wires going all over the place. Just place the tone pot beside the wires, you're not removing it.
Insert the killswitch(and the washer thingies). Drill a bit if necessary.
Solder it this way:

All you have to do is get two separate wires and solder them from each end.(From killswitch to guitar jack)

Many people stalk him because they are stalkers  as you can see:

Ok, so I gotta ask, I've only seen him on youtube.com and I've never really heard a full song. He's damn good at guitar, but it seems like hes more of a circus entertainer than musician (oh god your all gonna go nuts). Does he have songs that ARE songs? He kind of strikes me like mars volta; great musicians, very talented, but almost too talented to the point of it being unaccessable. Does he ever just have a rhythm guitar playing and maybe some lyrics with a few leads, then a crazy ass solo? Or does he just finger**** his fretboard for 9 minutes everytime he starts recording?

Sounds like you need Enter the Chicken; nearly all the songs have vocals on them and he doesn't just go for high-gain metal riffing all the time.

Cool, cuz dont get me wrong I love the guy from what I've seen. Theres alot of bands that I have a great deal of respect for, but wouldn't be caught dead listening too. 90% of Dream Theatre's **** sounds like elevator music from hell to me (I really only LOVE scenes from a memory). So I'd like to hear some approachable buckethead.

He has a few songs with lyrics but not many. "Botnus" is one of them, you might like it. I don't care for the lyrics or vocals but the guitar work is great(obviously). He has many structured songs. "Nottingham Lace"(though the song really gets good at 2:00+), "Soothsayer", and "Welcome To Bucketheadland" are amongst his more popular works and are pretty structured. You don't need lyrics to make a song a song.

He plays mostly as a solo guitarist...Most solo guitarists usually don't have songs with lyrics or "just a rhythm guitar playing with a few leads", the whole song is based around their lead.

^ I guess that makes sense, well I mean it does make sense. I'm sure it's just personal preference but I find stuff like that to be too "wandering." Where did the song begin and where did it end? Most likely the same place. Well-produced, and admittedly also over-produced songs tend to start you off somewhere and then take you to another place, figuratively of course. This stuff reminds me of John Petrucci's Liquid Tension Experiment. INCREDIBLE amounts of talent heaped onto each recording, but with very little direction. Lacks emotion.

You didn't listen to "Nottingham Lace" at 2:35+ have you? Or "Soothsayer" for that matter... Or "Machete" or "Ghost" or "Colma" or "Inferno" Or "Whitewash"...or much of the really good stuff :D

I really hope you're not listening to him playing these songs live and judging based off of those videos. They're often very improvised and quite different from the album versions.

Giant Robot, Monsters and Robots, Colma, Electric Tears.

There are a few, it really depends on what you like. If you want slower music go for Colma and Electric Tears. While Giant Robot and Monsters & Robots are more shreddy. He also has more music out there in different genre types.

does anyone think that buckethead should cut back on the amount of improv he does in his songs live? i've been watching him on youtube and he seems to just totally improvise solos all the time. And it sounds no way near as good as the solo's he does on his records. For example, i love the solos in soothsayer and jumpman, but he just seems to go crazy on the 'chromatic shredding' and it just weakens the song in my opinion :(

Sometimes he does a worse job but most of the time(to me) he does a better job live. I personally like his live versions of Soothsayer much better then the studio version.

So, how many people here try and actually collect Buckethead albums? (No! Not an mp3 collection!)

I've been collecting for a while now, and got most of his signed limited stuff. Missing a few though.

Does anyone have anything? Rarities?

I know I'm currently on a massive search for Somewhere Over The Slaughterhouse... I'll never find one at a reasonable price. :(

Speaking of which, Bucketheadland was on Amazon for like, 18 bucks I believe.. I couldn't snag it. :(

I know how that is don't worry. You should sit down for another long download of more music though. It is worth it trust me :) . Go for Electric Tears or Colma for the softer type of ones, go for Monters & Robots or Giant Robot for more shreddy stuff. Those are more solid albums since you have such a long wait for a download. Or you could find a way to get money and buy some. :)

I wouldn't really buy ISOT yet personally. You can get other albums that are more solid then that box set for less. Don't get me wrong ISOT is nice and all but it has some songs/pieces that are not that great and I think you would get a better buy on some other material.

As for the guitar I find that the first act is a complete waste. That amp is a waste also. You are better off just buying a cheap guitar for 100 or something and play without an amp until you can get some more money. You should go to the electric guitar part of this forum.

They will more then likely help you more then I can.

dude seriously did you like slow it down like hell and figured out what scale he used and tabbed it from there?

must have been a pain in the ass 0_o

Yea took me about 6 hours across 3 days. What you do is, take a mic and record the crazy parts onto audacity, and then use the "change tempo" function which will only slow it down without changing the pitch. Buckethead is mostly doing various Bb minor scalar runs, which makes it ridiculously easy to tab from that point on. Also the patterns are almost always the same. I'm thinking about writing an article on how to tab, especially insane fast parts. I think it would help since a lot of submitted tabs are always like "lolz this part is too fast, so I don't know how to playz it".

would the pitch of the song be changed if it was slowed down in windows media player?

Hey speaking of Audacity (now I know this is a Buckethead thread... just bear with me), is there a way to listen to what you've recorded while you're recording another track?

Because I was trying to record the Bleeding by 5FDP and the intro is like 3 guitars and its hard to record when you aren't allowed to listen to what you've already recorded while you're recording another guitar track at the same time.

Does that make any sense at all?

If you go to file -> preferences on the Audio I/O tab there should be an option near the bottom that says "Play through other tracks while I'm recording a new one" or something similar, it's just a check box so the rest should be obvious

That's weird, it automatically plays all other tracks for me while I record a new track.

I have the bootleg of that GAMH '06.

And yes, there are LOADS of amazing bootleg videos of Buckethead's tours. And best of all, they're free(and legal)!

*sigh* I wish I was better with GP tabbing. I know I can play BH's "Machete" but I learn much faster if I use GP rather than just text. If anyone gets bored and puts it on GP5 I'll totally give you a cookie and dub you the coolest person ever. :D

American Music Club / Social were great concerts! But..

Sounds like you need to get some bootlegs! :D

Just about every Bucket-boot I have is pure amazing and then some. If you want to get some without trading, you could always try to download from The Trader's Den (Link Here (http://www.thetradersden.org/))

His 2008 shows are pretty amazing. I have two so far. But search around, Buckethead has a goldmine of concerts online. And when I say goldmine, I mean DOZENS and DOZENS. :D

THIS.

Also, there's a DC++ server that has over 1 terabyte(I kid you not) of Buckethead bootlegs. I got loads from there.(Thanks to .tk buddies)

And his 2008 shows ARE amazing, although he had quite some problems at the Omaha, NE gig. Too much technical problems.

I agree - his 2008 shows are the best yet. He's technically tight and almost always on time this year, and he's finally playing the end of the solo to 'Jordan' correctly. I just wish he'd play a wider variety of songs like from Bansheebot (he only plays Asylum of Glass live - I'd love to hear Killing Cone or Hall of Scalding Vats, or even Sail On Soothsayer - maybe I Can Only Carry 50 Chickens at a Time. The ending riff in that song is godly)

I also wish he'd play something from Inbred Mountain live... Plastination Station, anyone?

But seriously Buckethead has such a wide variety of awesome songs to choose from, I just wish he'd diversify his set a little more.

Download link (http://dcplusplus.sourceforge.net/download/)

Install, and start up. Once you've started up, go to File -> Settings -> Connection Settings, then make it "Firewall(passive, last resort)". Put something on the personal info, even just the name. Then go to Downloads and choose directories for your downloads and unfinished files. [It's recommended that you keep finished and unfinished files on separate folders].

That should take care of the settings. Now go to File, then Quick Connect and put this URL:
chamberofhorrors.dyndns.org

Once you're connected, just pick a user, right click, and get their file list. Pick and download! Oh, and you'll have to restart your download all over again if you or your gets disconnected/logs off.

My username there is Rampqueen, and I only have 25GB right now. But hey, I think I upload pretty fast. :p:

hmm.. buckethead is a very talented and unique performer. One of the few artists that have such a unique creative touch that once heard, can be recognized every time you hear it from then on.

If you listen to any music buckethead did with bands.. its pretty easy to tell when its him playing haha...

What's the most "normal" buckethead album? I really want to get one. I'm totally in love with "Nottingham lace", but I don't want to get some totally freaky CD for my first one, you know? I kind of need to realise how good he is before I can be exposed to the really weird stuff. Any recomendations?

Colma, Electric Tears, or Population Override are probably your best bets.

Pepper's Ghost, Decoding The Tomb Of Bansheebot and Crime Slunk Scene have some madness, but aren't chock full of it. They might be better as you get more into Buckethead.
