Hey all. Have you noticed that there are virtually no good female guitarists? I have never seen any female virtuoso's/shredders or anyone that plays remotely fast, or is famous (not meaning that you are only good if you play fast). Does anyone know of any? The only ones I have seen are sucky girls with terrible gear around my town.

why is this in the modern rock thread?
Because it is a subforum of "Bands and Artists" I put it in bands and artists because of the relevancy of having it be related to other performing people.

there was a girl rock band in the 80s called rockgoddess *laughs at stupid name*, but they were a bit crap
I think MJ's guitarist was/is a Jennifer Batton or something. Also Lori Linstruth, you should check out her site. http://lorilinstruth.com if I'm not wrong.

Yeah I don't know which one but you are talking about the Wilson sisters. I thought they used a male guitarist for the real work, if I'm not mistaken.

isn't her name nancy wilson? she's good indeed. also check out bonnie raitt, joni mitchell, joan baez for good musicians/guitarists. there aren't too many of them, but you just have to search...

Well if your talking Metal/Rock guitarists your right there arent any.. That are well known, but i think its definitly harder for chicks to get into that sortof buisness(the serious guitarist buisness that is) But in other genres there are, for instance Blues.

I think Ann Wilson was the guitarist. Nancy was the vocalist (maybe I have it backwards). But they did use additional guitarists.
I was going to mention bonnie raitt as well. It seems that most capable female guitarists are in country, blues and folk. Me likem Emmy Lou Harris, but she's mostly a singer.

Well think about it, how many male guitarists are there? Say, for example, 10 million. Then how many virtuoso's/shredders there are? Say 10 thousand. Then how many of them are famous? Say 10. So say there are a tenth as many female guitarists as there are males, there'd be 1 million female guitarists, and one famous female virtuoso/shredder.

It's just an example. I mean, there are more male guitarists than females, so it's only natural that there'll be less brilliant female guitarists than there are brilliant male guitarists. But proportionally, it's probably the same.

i think there are too many housewives in the world. lazy women who cant be ****ed to get of their fat arse and get a job. thats why there are no girls in rock and that is why there are no good female guitarists. i suggest we throw all the housewives into a giant pit pour petrol on them then burn them

Oh come on. There're even more men out there who're totally useless, abusive pieces of crap.
Practice is a key to getting better - and guys are more mechanical in their thinking (not an insult) in the way that they do things in different perspectives as compared to girls, so it helps them work at it more easily.
Nothing's impossibe (actually no, pigs can't fly) if you try hard enough. ;)

Tons of good female guitarists, you're just not looking right. If you want advice, don't look for major mainstream female guitarists. Here are a few good ones
- Michelle Branch*
- Jessica Harp*
- Eva Cassidy
*Michelle and Jessica are in an amazing band called, The Wreckers, a Country-pop/rock band. They're just released a debut album and they're slowly becoming mainstream but it doesn't change the fact that they're great guitarists. Michelle and Jessica wrote three Solo albums each.

You are pretty right on that. People in the mainstream just don't taken female guitarist seriously because the atitudes of people this is includes many in this broad. This is why there are very few female guitarist epecially at the mainstream. It's about 100X or more harder for females guitarist to get into the industry let alone to be sucessful.
Even I have diffcult times just learn how to play the guitar and this not nothing to do if I was good or not it's beacuse I found so many people are against what I'm doing. It seems they found it werid a women playing a guitar and even my parents don't like the idea of me learning to play the guitar but I ignored these people who was against me taking up the guitar. I just buy myself a guitar and taking up lessons.
Anyway, that's my story and if any man who feels no women could ever play guitar will you should live a life of a women for a year and see if anyone would take them seriously on that!

Someone mentioned Lita Ford--good call. Bonnie Raitt--the reason I started playing again. But nobody mentioned Joan Jett...the eternal girl punk guitarist. Also didn't see Melissa Ethridge or Patti Smith or blues players Susan Tedeschi or Rory Bloch.
Pretty much ANYONE can learn to play guitar--I know some incredibly stupid people (of both sexes) who can't spell CAT if you give them the C and the A, but can play guitar like hell.
Further proof--look at all the stoned out "2 living brain cells left" guitarists out there....these folks are proof it ain't rocket science. :peace:

The "real work"? If by real you mean lead, then yes. They usually had another person play solos for their tunes. Nancy wrote the riffs though, and often showcased some amazing skill on acoustic guitar. My point is that just because she doesn't play lead does not mean that she isn't a killer player.

anyways, I'd have no problem playing with a girl(music, you dirty-minded fools)I see nothing wrong with it. and for whoever thinks that female guitarists are ****, then you should know that there are alot more **** male guitarists.

Vermox
06-11-2006, 06:46 AM
I think part of the problem lies in the different psyches of males and females. The different sexes listen to and play music in different ways. It's particularly more emotional for females whereas males tend to listen to it more for technique. Therefore when females tend to play the guitar they are not as interested as males in playing a super-technical solo. Girls don't sit around having a wank session talking about whose vibratto is better. They think more about what the song is actually trying to say.
Males tend to write songs that are narrative whereas females write songs that deal with feelings and emotions.
I think that it is partly this disinterest of females in playing long and technical solos that is part of the problem. But there will always be exceptions to the rule.
