Question which, to me, is just... Weird.


I set off a torrent downloading the other day, 1.25GB worth, from an 8GB torrent.

It started off going okay, then something else I downloaded [not torrents] gave me a virus, after a while of fiddling I had to system restore.

I set off my torrents downloading again, and this particular one hasn't gone up in percentage at all since the system restore.

The two others have, but not this one.

It's been stuck at 99.0% [1.25GB, remember] for hours now.

I decided to watch a few MBs get downloaded and saw;

The "total downloaded" go up by 2MB
The "downloaded" [this session] go up by 2MB
The rubbish data dropped remain the same
The amount remaining remain the same.


So, I don't understand...

Has the system restore messed up my torrent, or what?

Like I said, the other two still seem to be going okay [although I just watched a MB on another and the same thing happened, but in the past few hours the % has increased].



EDIT: Although just now the rubbish data amount went up by 4MB.


Gah.


Is there just so much going to rubbish because I'm only wanting 5/36 of the torrent's data?


Oh and, the rubbish data just went up by 8MB [not including that last 4], yet the amount downloaded only went up by about 2 :confused:.

How many people are there seeding it? It could just be stuck because of no seeds. If you want to be sure it's working, you could just delete the torrent from your program and try and download it again. I'm pretty sure it'll pick up where it left off and not start all over. I accidentally deleted one of mine and I was really pissed because it was almost done - I clicked on it to download again and it just picked right back up.

That's probably a lot of it. I find when I download large torrents but only take a small part of it, it ends up downloading like half the original torrent anyway.

So I'd say that's probably what's happening. Make sure it's connecting to the tracker and all that. And if it's really not working out well, I'd recommend just starting the torrent over again.

Not short of seeders, there's 15 at the moment.

It's speed is varying between about 5 - 20kbps.


Which may be snail pace to you lot, but to me it's fairly decent, I don't think I've ever had a download over 50kbps.



I might try re-downloading the torrent though, I'll give it a few minutes.


Is that basically where in the client, I right click then "remove --> task only"; leaving the data in the folder.

Then redownloading the exact same torrent and opening in the same client?

You can get invites if you were invited.


The movies will likely be completely safe, check the comments on them just in case.

Is it just that one comment?

If there are plenty of positive comments it's just likely some odd bod.

If Paramount were to do anything that harmed your computer, then they'd be in serious trouble - so it's quite unlikely.

The "health" is about how many people have how much seeded - I think.

For example if there was only one seeder but he only had 50% of the torrent downloaded - it's health would only be 50%, because he can only upload 50% of the torrent.


Like I said, I get movies from thepiratebay.org - they usually have hundreds of seeders on their movies, as long as they're popular. They also get a lot of comments usually, so you can compare how many say "omfg trojan" to how many say "nice upload, thanks".

http://thepiratebay.org/top/201 <-- That's there "top 100" movies, not sure how it's ranked, but I think it's done by number of leechers.

I don't often see that many seeders on Demonoid... Although, I don't usually search for movies on Demonoid.




Oh and also, my problem's sorted. I just restarted the client and it eventually finished the download off. Thanks to the guys who offered help :cheers:.

You can download as much as you want on OiNK, but you need to keep a good ratio. (download/upload). OiNK is the god of all torrent sites, for music that is. Demonoid i get movies and programs, OiNK i get music. AMAZING quality music.

You usually get them like in increments, on monthly basis so you never FULLY run out of them.

I think for Oink, you need to become a power user (or something like that), the conditions are something like;

Ratio of at least 1.15
Uploaded at least 20GB

That's about it, I could be wrong though.

As a power user you get an invite every fortnight.


If I'm wrong I'm pretty sure someone will correct me.


EDIT: Don't have any Oink invites - but if you want a Demonoid one I'm pretty sure I have one. Let me know.

You have to download it yourself first, then it should seed.

If you read the comments from other users, they'll usually tell you if something's wrong. but generally torrents are safer than limewire etc. but you should always be careful of what you download whether they're torrents or files sent over msn.

Although when I clicked the links the download box didn't open up, my Internet seems quite slow at the moment, unless the site is the problem.

I have this one download right, it's been on 99.9% for about a month now. And everytime it starts working, it starts on 55minutes, then goes to 1 hour, then 1 hour 22 minutes, 1 hour 53 minutes, then shuts off. Sometimes the percentage goes down even. Does this mean the torrent is dead or what?

Go to \windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts and open it with notepad. Then add the following to the bottom:

How can I tell the health of a file on Isohunt?

Just look at the number of seeders and leechers in the "S" and "L" columns to the right of the screen.

More seeders and less leechers mean better health. There's no handy gauge to tell you, but you should be able to gauge what the health is just by looking at those two numbers.

I just downloaded a few things last night and it says for all of them my status is Seeding. But only one of the files shows any progress seeding, all the rest say 0.0mb or whatever.

I need to get my ratio evened out, what am i doing wrong?

^ How much you seed depends entirely on the amount of other people downloading the file. If no one is downloading, you're not going to be seeding. Sometimes, people are downloading but just not connecting to you and leeching from you.

Are you behind a firewall? That may prevent people from connecting to you, if there are others downloading.

So... What if I continue to use uTorrent?The question you posed cries for an unbiased opinion. Is it safe? No, any P2P on the internet is not safe. But, I know what you are really asking and so I will simply agree that if you are downloading and uploading copyright material, and you don't get greedy, and you keep a careful about what you are doing, you should be cool and probably will not be caught by using uTorrent. However, nothing you do is going to guarantee you won't get caught. There are too many variables and too many head hunters and hackers out there.

The MPAA/RIAA can snoop you whenever they feel the inclination (via their third-party network monitoring stooges), regardless of which client you're using.

With that said, there's no imperative that you have to use latest versions. If you want to be extra cautious, you can stick with an older version of uTorrent released prior to the deal with BitTorrent. v1.6 (and older) of uTorrent (available at oldversion.com) - for example - still work fine.

uTorrent is a fast, lightweight, and fully functional BitTorrent client, as such I intend to continue to use it unless something better comes along.

There's nothing wrong with an ISO file, you just have to know how to use it. You could either burn it to a DVD or download a program called Alcohol 120%. It'll work just fine if you use that.

you might not have your router configured properly.

go to portforward.com and find your router on the list then choose utorrent and it'll tell you how to configure it properly.

^not that easy. luckily my sisters bf had oink so i got mine in the real world, not waiting on magicninjas list. i still need to upload 5gb more to because a power user. then i will have invites and all that good stuff. but how do i upload a lot? i started uploading with cds that i had and just cheated and said my bitrate was 320 when it wasnt. i got caught and now i wanna do it the real way. all my music is already on the site at least my cds and im not sure if my other music are transcodes. when i download it uploads a little. but on otther sites when i download it uploads A LOT. how can i download something and get it to upload a lot on OiNk.

I'm not really sure how that system works - you'll get some eventually.

I also have two OiNK invites. However, I will only invite someone that has a good ratio on Demonoid, because I need some way to know that you won't screw me over.

First two people who send me a PM with their email address and a link to their Demonoid profile get them.
