I know you aren't based on the question you asked.
Over ratedness is based specificaly on one persons opinion.
However, for fact, Metallica did simply and safely to imply that they did indeed sell out... I may be drunk too.

Sorry for putting this in the wrong forum. I'm still kind of a noob here. I just want to know. I'm in the middle of an argument with some friends over Metallica.

You may be mistaking Metllica with Metallica. Their bands are spelled very similar. You see, Metallica was James, Lars, Kirk and Cliff. Together they recorded 3 (4?) albums. When Cliff died, so did James and Lars. But luckily James and Lars each had twin brothers. Unluckily, James' twin can't sing per say, but once won a yodeling contest. And Lars never let his little brother play his drumset, so doppleganger Lars played the Tin-pans-i. Also they hired Jason. THis was all unbeknownst to Kirk. The album ...And Justice For All was recorded before the accident, but was mixed posthumously by inexperienced dopplegangers. (the reason the sound quality sucks). In the mid 1990s, the band voted 3 to 1 to cut their hair and start smoking. And the rest is history. If you have seen the Metallica/Metllica documentary Some Kind of Monster, doppleJames makes a reference to all of this when he misspells "Metallica."
Just thought it's time someone knew.
I only like two or three of their songs (I don't even listen to them, I just don't mind those songs), other then that, I couldn't care if they are overrated, because I never listen to them and I pay no attention to them. :)

Heres the deal with Metallica
When they came out in the 80s they had a unique sound. Majority of people were into GLAM metal and were pussies. Metallica decided to stray away from that BS and created their speed/thrash/punk sound. At the time no one was doing this. At least no one that got the eposure Metallica did.
The first 4 albums they made were raw, heavy, and irrational.
Then they recorded the black album. Which regardless of what people say is an awsome album. The problem with that album is that it's extremely radio friendly. For the most part it's the album that was made to go to number one on the charts. This is in thanks to there manager at the time.
Than you got Load and Reload which have some good tracks. My personal favorites being Until it Sleeps and King Nothing. The albums were different from there first 5. These were radio friendly once again with an influence in the modern day metal scene at that time.
After that Metallica wanted to make the most heavy, dirty, disgusting, raw album possible. Thus St. Anger...
I'll give credit to the band they are very talented in the sense that they can make an albums so different from the last. St. Anger was too different and was basically them being influenced by thier manager once again. He coaxed them into making **** music because they wanted a number one record. Which they did get.
Moral of the story....
Metallica is not overrated...
Producers are overrated

lol whut?
edit: ahh, didnt see the last sentence of that paragraph.
still, there were plenty of bands like them at the time, just none got selected by the majors to be mass marketed.

Two words, Black Sabbath.
No, Metallica didn't "help create" heavy metal, maybe thrash, but not heavy metal. I wouldn't even venture to say thrash as much either.
I love Metallica BTW.
lol whut?
I think he meant in the Los Angelas area. They were unique in that part, and people didn't really like them. Motley Crue, Ratt, Quiet Riot, they were different from those bands and that particular kind of music.

No, OLD Metallica is not overrated, as much as the ultra tr00 people won't admit it. But everyone hates the new Metallica also so they are fairly judged. As much as their new stuff licks balls, old Metallica was still the ****. But, I see no reason why Testament never got the recognition Metallica has.

they sounded like plenty of metal at the time. hell, most people admit that Kill Em All was their most cliche metal album.

How can you think they are overrated. Have you listened to Fade to Black, Master of Puppets, Seek and Destroy, One, For Whom The Bell Tolls, or Battery? Those songs are simply genius! I mean Fade to Black is just so into it... but think what you will... but I think they are the best heavy band of all time!

apparently a lot of metal doesnt make it into the forests of oregon, does it?
metallica is so big because they still had pop elements. they appeal to a lot of people, doesn't mean they're better or worse than anyone else.
Do you think they are? Then they are for you. If I don't they ain't for me.
Okay?

Pure win.
I agree.
ive never really been a metallica fan. ride the lightning and some of the early stuff was quite good, but I can even get through the first track of st anger anymore. Also they seemed slightly kamp for me. They never really pushed an boundaries or anything.

metallica popularized thrash metal and were extremely influential, but they didnt create metal. metal originated from bands like black sabbath, iron maiden, venom (whom im not at all a fan of), judas priest, and etc.
but of course this is all IMO
