Why is it that all of The pics of Bob Dylan are in black and white?
Google Image him and all the results are in b&w or very dull colours.

Saw No direction home. It's good aye.

What's Don't look back like?

I would be keen to see a DVD of a complete concert from him cos he was/is very good live from what I've seen.

Bob Dylan - the master!
nz_matt - if you look hard enough there is a TV special from 1976 which is well worth watching. Absolutely brilliant performances of Shelter from the Storm & Idiot Wind, and a number of others. '76 id one of my favourite Dylan live years (along with '65,'66,'95 and 2000, to name a few).

Don't Look Back is great - from the aforementioned '65, his last non-electric tour. See him laugh! See him drink! See him pwn Donovan! See him play some of his greatest songs live!

I'm a Dylan nerd, so feel free to ask here if you have any questions/requests for recommendations etc.

Recommend me a few titles. I've been interested in getting into collecting Bob Dylan but don't know where to start.

I've collected over a hundred Led Zeppelin boots but not one Bob Dylan yet.

Bluesbreaker7
05-07-2007, 06:38 AM
OK, here are a few good ones:

Now Ain't The Time For Your Tears ('65)
While The Establishment Burns ('66)
Hold the Fort for What It's Worth ('76)
Bob's Full House ('95)

Try those. Try sampling a couple from each year if you can and see which you like. Dylan is probably the most changable artist there is.

I assume you've got the official Bootleg Series?

^That's one thing I love about dylan, is that he refuses to become nostalgia. When I saw him concert a couple years ago, I was blindsided with unexpected arrangments for his songs. The only one that really stayed somewhat the same was Like A Rolling Stone during the encore.

And as for his pictures always being black and white, it was because of the time, it was the early 60s, colour was relqatively new. But also black and white photos just look classier and cooler.

So Who else thinks he is the greatest songwriter ever?

Cptbeefheart
05-08-2007, 09:58 PM
*raises hand*

Very few come close to him when it comes to songwriting ability. He has an uncanny talent at writing both music and lyrics. Desolation Row is my favorite Dylan song. He rhymes words that have no relation to each other, yet they seem perfect. And he is still chugging on today, his latest record is an awesome recording.

Bob Dylan is, if not the greatest (which I'd like to say he is), definitely one of the greatest songwriters ever. Top 3 without a doubt. My favourite song is probably Positively 4th Street folowed by Ballad of a Thin Man.

EDIT: Last time I checked, I couldn't believe there were no Dylan thread. I guess a lot of the UGers prefer cheesy solos above good songwriting.

So many Dylan songs are amazing. The beef I have with Dylan (and most singer/songrwriters) is that while their good songs are amazing, their shit songs are SHIT.
Lets face it, Dylan wrote some terrible songs.

^I don't know, I haven't heard all of his music (too damn much). Still, he's been around for more than 40 years now and have recorded almost one record/year. It's kinda hard to maintain quality with that kind of quantity. I mean, sure, he could be like freakin Radiohead and spend 2 years recording one album. But that wouldn't be Dylan, would it?

All I'm sayin' is that while some artists release three records in three years, some artist record a lot longer. It's all preference.

EDIT: What I mean is; the more songs you write, the more bad songs you will write (and good ones too, of course).

You do have a point. When he is good he's amazing, when he isn't he is terrible. I saw him live a few years ago and walked out, he was that bad. A friend saw him recently and said it was the best thing they've ever seen.

The interesting thing about Dylan is that the stuff he chose not to release is just as amazing as the stuff he did release. The bootlegs alone prove this. I've not listened to him in ages but i'm stuck doing my work tonight and listening to 'The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan' is a wonderful treat.

Blonde on Blonde, Blood on the Tracks, John Wesley Harding, Love and Theft and Bringing it All Back Home are all as good or better, and The Times They Are A-Changing, Another Side of Bob Dylan, Desire, Slow Train Coming and World Gone Wrong aren't far behind. Others are good too, and amazing in places.

Yeah I'll go along with that:D i just prefer those two

I was disappointed with the single "someday baby" a reconstruction of a tired old blues song called trouble no more(don't get me wrong i love the blues), as always his song writing is amazing but as every album passes i find it harder to engage myself with his vocals

Anyways, what do you guys think of His new album, Modern Times ?

I think that Modern Times is a really great album, to be honest.

However, with that being said, I must admit that I prefer the early Dylan (Bob Dylan, The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, et cetera) to the later, but I really have no complaints about his latest release whatsoever.

I think that this album shows that Dylan isn't only able to write great lyrics, but great music as well; some of the tracks from the album are simply great musically.

As I stated, I prefer early Bob Dylan, but this album definitely does a great job of showing that even after so many years he still has it.

Absolutely LOVE dylan. Got all his studio albums, I remember the first time I ever heard "Don't Think Twice It's Alright", put it on from my dads record cos I thought his hair looked the same as myn when I was about 6, and since then been obsessed.

I think his most underrated songs are When The Ship Comes In (I think that's possibly the greatest folk song ever written) and Most of the Time from Oh Mercy, such a great bit of producing that was.

I've kind of sculpted my singing voice around his and taken alot of influence from him as a songwriter as well although I try to keep my own style.

Yeah, after 40 years in the music buissness, he's still selling and doing quality stuff. THat in itself is just amazing. What else amazes me is his skills as a lyricist and a poet. More than his musicial skills. The way he describes things, whether it be about life or society or whatever, is just genious. The man's got a huge vocabulary...

I saw him a few months ago. Growly, throaty, lots of the songs sounded similar. But he proper got into four or five of 'em (My Back Pages, It's Alright Ma-I'm only Bleeding, All Along the Watchtower, Like a Rolling Stone) and it was pretty cool.

The thing is not to go into the concert expecting to see a ten foot tall demigod who has a liking for speaking with the audience. Which he didn't do at all.

If you really want to check out Dylan's singing listen "Tomorrow is a Long Time", "Sara", "Don't Think Twice it's Alright", "To Ramona", anything of his romantic work. He isn't so angry so it actually shows his singing ability. Be it his sound will always be a bit rough since his voice was pemanently damage when he got gravely sick early in his career.

His Nashville Skyline stuff has pretty good singing as well. "Tonight I Will Be Staying Here With You" is awesome. His duet with Cash on "Girl From North Country" Would be awesome but it is difficult for anyone but June to duet with Johnny's awesomeness.

Tough question, but I'd say so. Johnny Cash had a similar career in terms of longevity and quality through the years, but I'd put Dylan ahead of him. For his never settling down, and always doing things his way even now. He's maintained the Dylan personality, and he always will.

i heard it on a flight for the first time, and was really blown away. awesome lyrics, he does sound old though (im used to the pre-75 stuff mostly and own the rolling thunder revue, highway 61, blood on the tracks, and 1966 live) but nonetheless - great!

1964 Bootleg Series is one of the weaker ones (in as much as Dylan can be "weak"). Modern Times is great, but not as good in my view as his record from 2001, Love & Theft.

Get Blonde on Blonde, Love & Theft, Bringing it all Back Home first.

Then The Freewheelin', John Wesley Harding and Desire.

yeh i saw Bob last year in Cardiff, the show was okay, different than what i'd hoped though. He was kinda like a zombie haunched over a keyboard. looking miserable as hell. no energy in him. I mean at least Jagger and Springsteen give 100%

maybe Bob doesnt need to give 100% to create a good show. i was happy enough to be under the same roof as him.

still good music and a great experience.

^That video (which is the bee's knees) reminds me, for UK UGers: tomorrow (Sunday 14th) BBC 4's having a 'Dylan Night' (http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/bobdylan/tvradio/):

9PM: The Pure, the Bad and the Holy

"The Pure, The Bad And The Holy, a presentation of the diverse elements - protest, mountain music, blues and gospel that made up the catch all term 'folk'."

9.40: Arena - The Other Side of the Mirror

"Arena brings unseen performances from Bob Dylan to viewers screens in Murray Lerner's 'The Other Side of the Mirror- Bob Dylan at Newport'. The film contains a huge amount of unseen footage."

11: Arena - Dylan at the Madhouse

"Another chance to see the story of Dylan's first visit to Britain to take the lead in a Pintersque drama, The Madhouse on Castle Street."

12.10: Festival!

"Murray Lerner's cult classic, a portrait of Newport Festival with a who's who of great names of folk."

Just a heads-up in case you weren't aware. :)

If there is any expert on here, I'd just like to know...

Bob's acclaimed 'Bringing It All Back Home' (Side 1 featured his first studio recordings with an electric band, if I've gotten my facts straight) is in my opinion a great album. However, my vinyl issue of this album has it called ''Subterranean Homesick Blues''. Is this some spelling error maybe (It was printed in the Netherlands) or some early copy?

Thanks for any answer I might get!

And by the way, of course I love Dylan! His live performance in 1966 (The Bootleg Series Vol. 4) is amazing, and you can really feel the power when some ''fan'' yells 'Judas!'... And then Bob just looses it :D

I know what you mean. There's definitely something about Bob Dylan's music that appeals to me, I just can't explain what it is. A lot of his music's very simple and not very complex, but even on his early recordngs he manages to create a almost magical atmosphere with just a few chords and a harmonica. He is, simply put, awesome.

Goodness hides behind its gates

its like a dylan biography only in picture frames. It comes on alot on pbs and vh1 sometimes so try and catch it then. I kinda liked dont look back better though cause it was less of a biography and more of a tour documentary, shwing his day to day tour life kinda.

Any fans of Street Legal? It seldom gets a mention when people talk about 70's Dylan but it's such a brilliant album. Best tracks 'Changing of the Guards', 'Senor' and 'Is your love in Vain?'.

The lyrics are some of his best imo.

I'd suggest The Times They Are A-Changin', Blonde On Blonde, and Blood On The Tracks. Those three albums will cover, in general, three different parts (the best parts imho) of his career. The first is from his folkish era, the second is after he "went electric", and the third is post-divorce from his wife, and his best album in many people's opinions (including mine).

Yeah those tracks are so good, but my fave track behind GFTNC is 'I threw it all away'. I love the opening spanish sounding guitar part so much. You should def get the album, a lot of people didn't like his different voice but I think it really works with the country style.

John Wesley Harding is awesome as well.

I think I'd switch "Times" with "the freewheelin Bob Dylan". Of course, it's mostly just personal preference. I started with "freewheelin'" and it really opened my eyes to his music. Of course "Blonde on Blonde" and "Blood on the Tracks" are a must.

So saw bob dylan twice, i don't get why people say they don't like his modern performances, i love them. It is just another era of him just like in the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90's. And we all look back and spit on the people who don't like the stuff from those eras just because it was different, i mean why would you be a bob dylan fan if you weren't into change and a new style? I loved it when in this past year he play his guitar on stage i was so excited, it sounded amazing.

I thought he didn't try when I saw him... at least on the old stuff, the Modern Times songs and a few others were really good. I think his current "talk every line as fast as possible with no melody at all" vocal technique is pretty bad, and I don't see why he does it, as his voice was quite good when he wanted it to be. Honestly, I think it's crap to say that someone who doesn't like something Bob does isn't a fan. Bob is my favorite songwriter ever, and I found his live show this past year weak at many points.

Yeah after reading the Chronicles I have gone back to listening to him non-stop. I could never tire of 'Changing of the guards'. That song just gives me butterflies.

And the lyrics are just fantastic:

Sixteen years,
Sixteen banners united over the field
Where the good shepherd grieves.
Desperate men, desperate women divided,
Spreading their wings 'neath the falling leaves.

Fortune calls.
I stepped forth from the shadows, to the marketplace,
Merchants and thieves, hungry for power, my last deal gone down.
She's smelling sweet like the meadows where she was born,
On midsummer's eve, near the tower.

The cold-blooded moon.
The captain waits above the celebration
Sending his thoughts to a beloved maid
Whose ebony face is beyond communication.
The captain is down but still believing that his love will be repaid.

They shaved her head.
She was torn between Jupiter and Apollo.
A messenger arrived with a black nightingale.
I seen her on the stairs and I couldn't help but follow,
Follow her down past the fountain where they lifted her veil.

I stumbled to my feet.
I rode past destruction in the ditches
With the stitches still mending 'neath a heart-shaped tattoo.
Renegade priests and treacherous young witches
Were handing out the flowers that I'd given to you.

The palace of mirrors
Where dog soldiers are reflected,
The endless road and the wailing of chimes,
The empty rooms where her memory is protected,
Where the angels' voices whisper to the souls of previous times.

She wakes him up
Forty-eight hours later, the sun is breaking
Near broken chains, mountain laurel and rolling rocks.
She's begging to know what measures he now will be taking.
He's pulling her down and she's clutching on to his long golden locks.

Gentlemen, he said,
I don't need your organization, I've shined your shoes,
I've moved your mountains and marked your cards
But Eden is burning, either brace yourself for elimination
Or else your hearts must have the courage for the changing of the guards.

Peace will come
With tranquility and splendor on the wheels of fire
But will bring us no reward when her false idols fall
And cruel death surrenders with its pale ghost retreating
Between the King and the Queen of Swords.

I personally think that Blonde on Blonde should have beaten Sgt Peppers for best album of all time in Rolling Stone a few years back, because
-Sgt Peppers is good, but the songs aren't nearly as well written. Some of the songs on Blonde on Blonde are inarguably poetry.

I agree that Sgt. Peppers shouldn't have won. I love the Beatles.. but Sgt. Peppers is not that great of an album as far as the rest of the Beatles' stuff goes. It may have been new and exciting in its time but listening now and hearing what the Beatles progressed to.. it clearly is not their best album.

Dylan covered a few songs.. but only because he liked the song and not out of necessity to fill up an album. On the "Dylan" album you can hear a bunch of covers.. that was released by his ex-label who released it to screw him for some reason or another.

It kind of annoys me that no Bob Dylan CDs include lyrics in the booklet.

For Dylan lyrics, go to bobdylan.com; they're all there, and what's better: they are all right!

Not really Dylan related, but a black guy who'd I've never spoken to before came up to me when I was walking home the other day. He asked me if I was that guy who played on the streets downtown, and then said I played, and I quote: 'the best blues harp I've heard in a while from a peachy ass white boy.'

I felt so privileged. But yeah, Dylan's a good mouth organist. Takes a while to into his style of playing I think, though, because it's quite aggressive.

It was when he noticed Rambling Jack Elliot did Guthrie songs too, and better, he felt he needed something to stick out. So he started wrighting songs.

So we also have Ramblin Jack Elliot to thank :)

Haha, his replies in interviews were genius.. I suppose I'd have some fun with interviewers, too, if I had to answer the same questions all day.

I like when a reporter asked him something along the lines of "Why are you questioning me?" and he says "I'm not questioning you cause I don't expect any answer from you."
