he saved the guitar on my profile (the pic of me with the teisco) from the dump
he found a vintage LP replica his uncle bought in the late 60's, it's really solid for a knockoff, solid mahogany with a maple top, just needs some new pups 'cause it gives epic feedback
he's got an old Japanese made SG replica, good body and neck, but the wiring needs redoing,
and then he's got an old crappy harmony acoustic

I'm usually around, I'm just too lazy to post anything. I just read whatever you guys are talking about Lol I feel like a dirty pervert sometimes..
There is youtube videos of The White Stripes with Jeff Beck.. Pretty cool but they barely let him play anything, he should be soloing his ass off. They're covering all Yardbirds songs I think.. Check them out anyway, worth a watch.
EDIT: On a bluesier/random note.. At work (I work at the pub where I play sessions every monday night) they've all started calling me 'Skippy'.. Because I'm Australian.. How original.. But I kinda like it 'cos my middle name is James and yeah.. Skip James is awesome.
I could be a ripoff like Sonny Boy Williamson II.. I could be Skip James II
DOUBLE EDIT: Has anyone watched the cartoon/anime "Cowboy Bebop"? It's pretty awesome its like anime about these space cowboy bounty hunters in the future but it's set to all modern jazz and blues music, it's awesome.
I'm was listening to one of the songs with awesome sax playing and now I want some good Saxophone stuff to get so can anynoe recommend me a good album to start with? I was think something by Coltrane? The sound I like is kinda.. Just wailing, bluesy, mellow solo-age.. Think "Red Sky At Night" by David Gilmour?

Bill Bailey is hilarious. My sisters seen him a few times, Brae. Do you like Black Books, he's in it. Absolutely awesome, and he's in NMTB. And also Brae, how did that essay take so long? :haha For my history exam I wrote 7 A4 pages (by hand biatch) in just under an hour, I suppose there were different questions, but still!

I took note of it but haven't checked it out yet. Trying to do a Dm slide version of Devil Got My Woman so I've been ****ing around with that all day and being lazy.
It sucks cos I really want to learn proper fingerstyle acoustic blues but I always just quit and invent my own progression for slide or just with a pick because I suck at fingerpicking. Seriously the only song I can finger-pick is Stack Shot Billy just because it's more rhythmic than crazy arpeggio stuff and alternating bass stuff.

I don't really sweat all the arpeggio stuff because it's not really my style. I do fingerpick a bunch, and I am getting better at it. Oh, and I tried out that Dm tuning, and I love it. Have you tried this tuning?

I'm alright at finger picking, coz I was taught classical guitar from the ages of 8 to 10, so I have basic grounding. But I stopped for a year and lost it...Now I can play classical, just. When I finger pick, I don't use the same technique thats used for classical though, I'm just not quick enough.

The only classical training I have is in Violin. I played for about 2 years when I was in middle school, and didn't pick up another instrument until I was 18. I lost all my musical knowledge.

I dunno I just don't really need that kind of sound I'd rather a regular acoustic or electric for slide. Esquires work good since half the design of them was stolen from Fender lap steel guitars anyway.
And yeah those Epiphone Sheratons are reallllly ****ing nice guitars. My GFs dad has like a £3000 hand made 335 copy, it's an exact replica of a vintage one (I forget what year) and it plays like ****, but my friends £400 Sheraton is possibly the nicest semi I've ever played. The only negative is they still have bad sounding Epiphone pickups that they use in all their guitars but just replace them with like BKP Mules and rewire it and it would be the shizzle.
I like the blonde finish though.

I've been trying to thing of bands that had major age discrepancies in their members. The three that I can think of right off the top of my head are (in no particular order) Thunderclap Newman. Song of theirs you might find is "Something in the Air" Kid playing guitar was 14 if I remember correctly. Jefferson Starship. On their Dragonfly album they had a kid that was about 17 playing guitar. His last name was Chaquta or something like that. Humble Pie. Steve Marriot spent 2 years trying to get Peter Framptons parents to allow him to join and go on tour with them. Peter joined at 16.
It can be done but I would guess the success rate is rather low.
TheDev01dOne
04-24-2008, 10:44 PM
Can't hurt to try I guess. It's not like I'm gonna be a bad influence on him since I'm straight edge and the bass player doesn't drink or anything either.. so his parents should be cool I guess. I just reallly want a drummer so I can get shiit sorted and get gigging and having fun.
Still listening to Slim Harpo, loads of the songs I never knew were his, he has a lot of really good songs it's crazy he's not very well known. "I got love if you want it" is a great song, Aussio harp player/singer Chris Wilson does a great cover on a DVD I have but I never knew who did the original.
He seems to be popular with Aussie bluesers actually.. Johnny Diesel covers "Tee-ni-nee-ni-nu" and Dave Hole covers "I'm a King Bee"

well, a more modern band would be Derek trucks Band, the youngest member Derek is 27 and the oldest is Kofi Burbridge, I think he is in his late 50s now

Still a decent gap though I guess, age gaps mean less the older you get though like 6 years between 14 and 20 is a huge difference but 6 years between 20 and 26 is like ****all, just the same maturity level (theoretically)

I love that Slim Harpo. He has an oddly jazzy, yet bluesy voice at the same time. I like Hangover Blues.

He's cool I really like his stuff, will be covering some of his songs for sure.
Now I'm listening to a bootleg of Robert Cray, Jimmie Vaughan and Hubert Sumlin live.. It's really good quality, plenty of Cray improv solo-age, I assume it was one of his gigs since they're mostly his songs.

That's kind of what I was searching for in my "gray matter" were bands that had members maybe 16 or so as the youngest when they did some recording. Age differences of say 25 to 50 aren't as dramatic as 14 - 20. A 14 yo is still a kid. Sorry if you're 14 and that pissed you off wasn't trying to. The ravages of puberty are pretty much done at 20. 14yo males can be pretty much like 30 yo pmsing queens of hell.

On Jack White, I much rather hear him play country, folk and blues music than I do his garage stuff. I'd love to hear him do an album of covers with other than Meg White, would be so much more interesting to hear him do some good covers of Bob Dylan, Blind Willie Johnson and stuff like that. :liplick:

Aussie Floyd were awesome, if they ever go to your town, I say go and see them. ****ing incredible show. My dad rated them up there with YES a few years ago, Thin Lizzy in the 70's the few times he saw them and someone else I can't remember who he said though.
There were these two guys in their sixties at the very front, completely stoned :haha It's great to be able to go to a gig, and there be so many ages of people there, everyone knowing the words.
The best thing about the gig was that they didn't try, or pretend to be Pink Floyd, they just played their music incredibly. There were two guitarists, a bassist, a singer, an incredible drummer, and a keyboard player. There were also some very hot backing singers. :p:

I'm officially dubbed a Nave of the Knights of Wilkeshire now. Awesome. Seriously the pub that I work at is 100% easily my favourite place in the world. I know I'm gonna miss it when I go back to Aus.
Got a prctice room booked to jam with this drummer on sunday, hopefully it all goes well and I'll have myself a drummer. My GF has also agreed to start practicing bass seriously with me so we can learn songs together and then I'll always have a bass player.
I'm also waiting for like a good moment to propose to her.. (not sure what constitutes a good moment for that but I guess I'll realise when it comes) Gotta buy a ring or something too I guess, I don't have much money though so it's gonna have to be cheap.
EDIT: For those that play slide on electric guitar, what gauge strings do you use?? I normally have 10-52 on all my electrics but I find the strings are a bit floppy for slide playing and seem to fret out alot. I'm gonna buy some 12s or 13s if I can find them tomorrow and see if they're any better.

Hopefully, she doesn't frequent UG. Cheap to a woman=expensive to a man.
Here is the perfect plan for proposal:
1. Get her to be an awesome bass player
2. Get many gigs, or go on tour in Aus.
3. Have a killer set on the last stop of tour
4. Play Lenny for the Encore, and propose in the middle of the song onstage.

Cool man looks like great fun, good cover of the song. Cool that there's an organ player, blues organ players are getting rare these days, its kinda a forgotten part of that blues sound with everyone focusing on guitar so much.
Today I had a band practice/drummer audition and it was great fun. We didn't play much blues though, we were rockin a cool funky kinda sound with some RHCP and Hendrix stuff and then just jamming on weird funk chord progs. We actually did break into "Play that funky music white boy" which, as shameful as it is to admit it, was great fun Lol that song has such a sweet bass line.
But yeah the drummer turned out to be great, can definitely play his kit and he's bigger than me and looks older anyway! so no worries there, he seems really keen to do this so hopefully the other guitarist liked him and we can get things moving.
So yeah, looks like its gonna be a funk-ish rockin band so now I need to improve my funky techniques Lol so far my only techniques are barre chords, off beat up strokes and then double stop solos..
Hopefully I can slot some more bluesy songs in there though so we'll have a good mix of different stuff to jam on and keep us motivated.

there's the last one I've got! I get three solos in this one. By accident at the start of the third one I hit the octave pedal on whoever's pedal board it was. It was a slow start while I'm staring down trying to fix it, haha.

Lol was cool and garage-y sounding with the octave-solo, I liked it. Shame the other dude was playing in the wrong key, why didn't you yell at him what key it was in? Or why didn't he notice it was wrong and swap keys, he was playing the rhythm part he should've know what key it was in.

How are condenser mics when micing amps? I know they're good for acoustic guitars and vocals.
They can work great without using close micing techniques. Try moving it about 5-10 feet away from the amp to get a more ambient sound that you can mix with the close mic'd track. Sometimes I like to position a condenser near my ear, so I can get close to the sound I hear as opposed to the sound coming straight out of the speaker.
ALWAYS experiment while recording, it's how you learn what works and what doesn't, and how you can get what does work to sound as good as you possibly can.

Cissy Strut = Awesome song!
I've become addicted to the funk. The Meters are awesome, I love their instrumental funk songs, so much room for improv (which I assume they do when they play live) and just really fun to play. We're gonna cover Cissy Strut in the band so when we play live we can just improv the middle section and swap solos for a while, should be awesome fun.
And yeah its way too quiet in here lately. I bet Goolz is uber bored without UG Lol he was always on here.

I use a condenser microphone and I just put it in the same room, I don't close mic my amp. You get the sound that you hear, and the acoustics of the room, rather than just speaker to microphone.

I Just got this email on myspace. What do u think, is it a scam.
"Hey guys,
I found your page here on myspace and I really liked the song “Stella”. If you are interested, I wanted to extend an invitation to our upcoming compilation “Rock 4 Life”. Below I have included part of the invitation that explains everything about the CD and our cause. Because of the popularity and success of the series we have made a new page. Make sure to also add Quickstar Productions main page in our top friends. I hope that you will be able to join us and if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask.
Rock on,
Bryan
.... My name is Bryan Bosmans, a Project Manager with Quickstar Productions. We are putting out a compilation CD titled "Rock 4 Life" and we would love to have you join us. This compilation CD is going to be used to promote pop punk, screamo, power pop, and of course rock bands. The inspiration for this CD came from a close friend Quickstar Productions, Kevin O'Hara. Kevin O’Hara is a drummer from Northwest Indiana who was diagnosed with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC) at the age of 18. This disease causes the liver to shut down and currently the only cure is a liver transplant. We want to help Kevin and others like him by donating proceeds of "Rock 4 Life" to the PSC Partners Seeking a Cure. PSC Partners Seeking a Cure is a foundation that endeavors to find a cure and treatment for Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis. The bands featured on the compilation CD will get great exposure for a good cause and the money raised will help those like Kevin who are awaiting the uncertainty of a liver transplant. This is a win-win situation.
“Rock 4 Life” will be professionally produced, glass mastered, shrink wrapped, full color, and retail ready. The compilation will be sold through the bands on the CD and will also be distributed digitally in more than 300 mp3 retailers worldwide. This includes all the big stores you are use to like iTunes, Napster, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Vcast, etc. Quickstar Productions will pay the bands 50% of profits for these downloads. To further help the artists on the compilation, Quickstar Productions will also send out promotional copies to various contacts at Record Labels (Vagrant, Victory, DriveThru to name a few), Internet and College Radio Stations, Management Firms, etc. Included with the promotional CD’s will be a booklet giving more information on each band. The booklet will feature brief bios, contact information, and a picture. This will be used to help promote each and every artist on the CD.
To have your song included on our upcoming compilation CD, “Rock 4 Life”, please visit our website to download the submission forms. We ask that each band purchase 50 CD’s at cost ($175) to help us cover the manufacturing, production, and shipping expenses included with this Compilation. Our recommended retail price for the CD is $7. 99, but of course you can sell them for whatever price you choose. If you sell them for our recommended retail, you take in $400. This is a great way to get more merchandise to sell at your shows and also a great way to target other fans in your genre. Please check out www. QuickstarProductions. com for more info on this compilation and also take time to learn more about PSC and what you can do to help at PSCpartners. org . Since we plan to release this CD in the summer of 2008, we ask that all submissions be returned by May 15, 2008. Please contact us with any questions or concerns and we hope to hear from you soon!

Check out Raconteurs concert i just got back from.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ysrxh2RZmx0
We were front row and right in the middle, it was the most amazing concert i have ever been to. There playing is so awesome, and jack white is a godly guitarist and an all around good guy. During the last song (Carolina Drama), towards the end, jack saw a girl in the front row who just passed out, so since security sucked, Jack jumped off stage, guitar in hand, and asked the girl if she was all right, he swung the guitar around his back, picked up the girl, and took her the the side of the stage for help. The girl was like 3 ppl to the right of me. So jack walked right by me, it was awesome. So anyways when he got the girl to help, he jumped back on stage and finished the song. It was so amazing, and u could tell Jack was pissed at security for not doing anythingl. But that just made me respect Jack even more as a person.
O and when they finished the last song, they were doing there little bow thing, and when Brendon Benson saw my little cousins in front of me he got off the stage and took the roses my cousins got before the show for the band. So they were like so excited about that, there like 8. And i was amazed cause i got to be really close to jack and Brendon shook my hand.
O and my uncle caught a pick Jack threw out to the crowed.
It was just an amazing show, there performance was just so amazing. Jack and Brendon play really well together.
So that was my concert experience.

Brae has gone to work in a mine somewhere, he's gonna be Dopey, I don't remember who filled the other 6 places.
And yeah I've found all my band members from ads on the interwebs, Gumtree.com and partysounds.co.uk ... Just email the people bac and forth a bit and then organise somewhere to jam and go there with an open mind to just have fun.
Most of the replies I got (I've had a surprisingly large amount of replies) once we emailed back and forth a bit about our plans, ideas, influences and stuff it was never going to be worthwhile so we didn't get together.
The people that did seem cool from emailing and stuff then I just invited them around to jam and sometimes we picked a few songs we could both learn so we'd definitely have something to jam to together, that works well. But all except 1 were really cool, had a jam and made some noise then whatever happened happened. But I ended up with a guitarist, drummer and bass player (though the bass player doesn't seem very interested anymore)
But yeah only 1 guy who said he was a guitarist and singer turned up and couldn't even barely play any chords or anything, couldn't keep in time, and didn't want to sing infront of my girlfriend, so that was a waste of time but it wasn't that bad I just made an excuse after a while for him to go and was still nice about it, he was just too much of a beginner.
I'm rambling aren't I?..
Anyway yeah, it's worked out well for me, just keep an open mind, be friendly and have fun. If it's not fun then call it a day.
Did that help? Probably not.

Tell me about it. Especially when you work two 8.5 hour shifts under the hot sun all day.
I really like my new job though :) I work maintenance at a golf course, so what I do is mow the greens and fairways, rake the bunkers, random shit like that. It's all on big machines so it's not too bad. Sometimes they get you to do some hard work like shoveling gravel and stuff but I don't even mind that, just gets me stronger and gives me bigger muscles :p: But it's pretty fun, and it's really nice cause you're outside all day.
Oh, but I also get tomorrow off. It's some teachers convention tomorrow :) Yay for sleeping in :p:

was it a good buy?
it was a blem item so thats y is was so cheap, but the only thing wrong with it was the nut was chipped and it made the high E string buzz a lil, but when u play a note with that string it doesnt buzz, so it kinda sucks with playing chords, but bar chords and lead play great on it. and it has a really diverse sound, from heavy screaming rock to warm bluesy tones. and i love the look of it, just looks so classic, i got the silver sparkle and i didnt think i would like it, but when i saw it, it just looked so good.
could i replace that nut? i think im goin to take it to my local music store and see what they can do with it.
