its his first i think, and i estimate its been 15 days, so i'd say about 15 more days

i might be way off, though, since that was all based on educated guesses.

You're company is not welcome 'round these parts.

:p:

But yeah, people need to start posting again... *tumbleweed*
:( But Dimebag, I thought were were home-boys. I thought there was chemistry between us of the non-sexual nature. And I can contribute to the talk of jazz and blues so long as the avant-garde jazz of Moondog is allowed. Plus, the Pit is boring, and the guys in Modern Rock keep talking about stuff I don't really listen to much of anymore. And I'm terrified to set foot in the metal forums. Okay, I know when I'm not wanted.. I'll be where the other outcasts that no one likes belongs. *Treads off sadly into Pop Punk and Emo.*
I like dweezil a lot. I remember seeing him play on the tonight show or some late night show. He kinda looked like he didn't want to be there which was kinda funny.
I imagine it might have something to do with the fact that he was playing for people that don't care about Zappa's music. When I saw them he had a smile on his face the entire time, especially when a guy in the audience gave him the old Missouri license plate with the word, "ZAPPA" on it.

Same except I didn't go anywhere. Was a pretty good birthday though, my whole day will be:

12 noon = Wake up, get new guitar case.
12 - 3 = Play guitar in the conservatory, rehearsing/writing a song for band practice.
3 - 3:30 = Rest and watch TV a bit.
3:30 - 8pm = Play more guitar inside and a bit outside and with my girlfriend playing bass, trying to write lyrics for another song.. then have dinner.

Now I'm resting after dinner while my GF gets ready and we're going out to see my friend's blues band at the pub in town.

I'm glad it was nice weather, kinda took the crapness off turning 20.

Thanks guys.

Always a set back, the singer for the blues band was sick so they just played acoustic songs all night. Was still good though, better than sitting at home.

Picked up a new bass amp on loan from their bass player for my girlfriend, is some big fany 280W Roland thing, weighs a tonne but the guy is selling it pretty cheap so I'll probably buy it for her as an early birthday present since she really needs one fo practice.

Now I'm trying to convince her to chuck a sicky tomorrow so she can stay home and play bass with me all day.

I'm hoping my band will agree to cover some ZZ Top (I Need You Tonight) which would be the bluesiest song we'd do so far. Should be awesome if they let me, I can play my Esquire then for the whole BG effect.

I was gonna say, you need a teacher. :p:
Seriously, this isn't an insult or anything of the sort, but having a teacher when you're starting out is such an incredible help. Even if it's just to learn the basics and get a rough idea of theory. Then you go off and learn songs and **** by yourself.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blues
Read through that, and see if it helps you musically at all.

I've gotta go have dinner though, I'll be back to help shortly. :)

Here's what I was thinking.

Just any random blues theory you can think of, hit me up and I'll add it to the list. People can sign up for a certain thing, and write a mini lesson.

We could have:

12 Bar Blues:
Intros, Turnarounds, Endings:
Blues Scale:
Improv Tips:
I7-IV7-V7:
Eight Bar Blues:

Let me know if you want something added to the list, and I'll probably start up a sign up thread.

I could use some improv tips. This is why...

Not tryin to change the subject but my search for a band is over. I've finally found one. My first band is called "Dead Key" (not too crazy about the name). I put an add on the internet and they answered.

I play lead and we have a gig coming up saturday. Here are some songs we're playing:

Cocaine blues and Gods gonna cut you down by Johnny Cash. (More of a blues rock version of each)
Down by the river- Neil Young
Who do you love - George Thor/Bo diddley
Babe I'm gonna leave you- Zep

I didn't pick these songs (since I came into the band kinda late) but they're def not bad ones to play. I basically Improv for the solos and just add little fills here and there. I can hold my own but I'm def. not amazing. IMO my solos sound a little to bluesy and not enough rockish? Any help or tips would be appreciated.

TheDev01dOne
05-12-2008, 12:44 PM
Start at the 5th fret on the low E string.. That is an A.. your root note.. then play upwards along the low E string until you get to the 17th fret.. then you're back to A and you've played 1 octave of the scale..

Play it like that a few times until you know what the notes should sound like.. Then you can try playing it in different positions, and using different strings and you'll know if you're playing the right notes or not.

Basically if you start from an A and end on an A, that is 1 octave, but there are endless different ways to play it.

That TAB thing, fretoard map, whatever you want to call it, just shows you every note in the scale, not what order to play them in, but if you're improvising over the key of A, any of those notes will sound fine.

Its hard to explain in typing Lol

But if you've been given 3 weeks to live, surely you would be in a hospital/hospice and wouldn't have access to the internet, right? I usually have no qualms about saying what im thinking to someone, but in this case, it would be a bit bad to say "i call bull****"

Yeah, i think that i had 3 weeks to live, i wouldn't be spending ages on UG. Id make one quick announcement in the blues and jazz forum, and then do things in my real life, like jump on a plane to Hawaii, spend a day playing the most emotional blues jam i can, shag a few lasses, get completely pissed etc. Also, seen as i would die soon, id be tempted to beat a homeless guy to death. Lets face it, no one will miss him, and you've basically got a "do what you want" card!

John McLaughlin. His work with Miles Davis isn't the best starting point unless you already like jazz, so check out his work with the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Also, try listening to his work with Shakti. If you're a fan of Santana, he did an album with him at some point in time, though I don't think its his best work. Fans of Black Flag HAVE to like his music. They just have to.

....also, Moondog. Just because he's so damn cool. Also, Frank Zappa's Wakka Jawaka and Hot Rats albums.

Joe Pass? He's extremely well respected in the jazz community. I guess the album that is most normally suggested is Virtuoso.

Jeff Lang is an aussie singer songwriter guitar player, plays more modern folky stuff these days usually acoustic. Had some crazy chops back then though. Very 80s clothes and hair. I'm guessing he like Rory Gallagher a fair bit.

 Hell yeah! I love Three Friends. Its their only album I have, though. :( But you know, I don't think moondog is that out there, unless you hear his songs with birds squawking and what not. I like his percussion stuff, and the melodies he wrote were really cool. Trees Against the Sky and Witch of Endor are some of my favorite songs, up there with Man with the Harmonica by Ennio Morricone.

And finally, please please please, single coil neck pickup.:cry::cry:

theneildeal

looking at those, the pickup selector is too close to the strings, so you'll knock it when you're playing. I agree with ze monsta because the red one is nicer, but it would look better with a cream scratch plate.

Wow, just saw BB live last night in Portland. Fifth row (great christmas present)!! Horn section was great, bass and drums great, singing/guitars great. I really liked BB's rhythm guitarist Charlie Davis; he was quite versatile. However, BB's talking sometimes really slowed the pace of the show. He was very funny and a great talker, but it draged on for a bit. But when he sang and played it was game on.

Damn nice guitar Jimmy but cut those string ends off, uglying up the place!

Anyway I got Adam Gussow's book 'Mr Satan's Apprentice' for my birthday, I'm about halfway through it and it's awesome, reallly well written and not boring at all. Also got the 'new' Satan and Adam album he's just released of live songs just recorded of them busking on the streets of Harlem. theneildeal

firstly, what a bad way to end a song! They must have spoken about it before because its not the kind of thing that you both play without discussing it. I got the feeling that Mayer was holding back in that song, because he could have really done a great solo, and the song needed one. I suppose out soloing Buddy Guy isn't something that you should do!

I'm sure that you've all seen the Wangcaster, and wanted a move hand up and down it, but we all know that its a one-of-a-kind. Well, i was looking at some of Doug Carver's other guitars, and they are incredible. http://www.carverdoug.com/guitars.html I looked at the price, and they're only $800-$1500! I could get a cheap Squiere Strat, send it over to him, and get a SRV/Me version of this for £500:

Could you not get an awesome Matchless or Soldano or (insert other nice ''booteek'' amps here) for only a little more than a Twin? And the obvious question, have you ever used a Fender twin? Can your mind comprehend how loud and clean those mofos are?!!!

I'd totally spend as much as possible on some killer amp and then decide on a nice guitar with what's left.

I still want to buy a Matamp damnit but they have like a 9month waiting list so by the time I got it it would almost be time to go back to Aus. :(

So I've decided to ignore my gear buying impulses (which I usually indulge happily) as hard as it is.. And just wait until I get back to Aus, then go GAS crazy on a killer amp and some sort of semi or hollow electric.

Not buying guitars makes me a sad panda.

Kris, did you think about saving up for a 57 Twin, or even a Virbroverb? :haha

But on a more serious note, why not get the Twin Reverb?
I was gonna go for the Vibroverb and not get the ES, but I fucking love ES's so I thought that I would stick to a cheaper amp. Plus the Twin that I'm looking at is pretty sick. I played it at Long and McQuade a couple times and it was amazing. The cleans were crystal clear and the OD channel is crunchy but also produces a sick smooth blues overdrive. I played it for like an hour straight. :p: And I don't like how the Twin Reverb has no overdrive channel. And I've played it a couple of times and I didn't really like it that much to be honest.

Oh and the Twin that I'm looking at has a switch to 1/4 the power output so I can keep it at 25watts for my room and 100watts when I gig. :)

so i got to see clapton on thursday night here in new jersey and it was absolutely stellar. he played a practically perfect show that was focused mostly on blues tunes, and not his boring light rock songs that most of the public knows. doyle bramhall II played guitar along with him and was really great. i have the crossroads dvd that bramhall played on and there is no doubt hes gotten exponentially better since then. the rest of the band was wonderful as well, pino palladino(from the john mayer trio) was on bass. although claptons electric guitar playing was absolutely phenomenal, i think his most impressive song of the night was his acoustic 'driftin blues' which he did solo. god can that man play the guitar. also, little wing was incredible and i was super happy to hear it since thats my favorite song. what is even more exciting is im seeing john mayer twice this summer and the black keys in august.

yeahhhhhhhhh

EC Band Lineup:
Eric Clapton - guitar, vocals
Doyle Bramhall II - guitar, backing vocals
Chris Stainton - keyboards
Pino Palladino - bass
Ian Thomas - drums
Michelle John - backing vocals
Sharon White - backing vocals

01. Tell The Truth
02. Key To The Highway
03. Hoochie Coochie Man
04. Little Wing
05. Outside Woman Blues

And you didn't bootleg this show why??

Now that I know how easy it is to record gigs I plan on recording and archiving as many as possible of all the future gigs I ever go to.

I've probably said it before but I don't think Clapton is that good of a guitar player, there are certainly a lot of better players, and he's never been the greatest singer either, I like and respect him more just as a personality and kind of a spokes-person who helped bring blues into the mainstream to get the respect it deserved. And also who, IMO through his always discovering/playing with new young players, keeps driving it forward and is a pretty big figure-head in general as a blues guy.

That is my Clapton theory.. I find his guitar playing a bit samey and boring these days but his passion and love of blues and his amazing personality and using his fame to keep the blues alive and progressing earns him truckloads of respect from me, probably more than if he was just a great player.

So what do you people think about the Gibson ES-339. It's like the 335, but it's a lot smaller and more compact and it has a slimmer neck. I really like it! :) I tried it out today at the store and it sounded great too.

ze monsta
05-25-2008, 06:49 AM
^ No one has enough cash here to be interested in them. :haha

I went to the guitar store today, mainly to get a new lead, but truthfully because I wanted to raid the acoustic section again.
I have this thing about being far too shy to play the electrics, but being extremely content with the acoustics. Took a tuner and put the resonator (that was in some kind of hybrid of open D and Open E :haha) and put it in Open G. It's the sex. But there was one downfall, the nicest acoustic I've ever played, a LAG guitar had been sold! :crys: It sounded so sweet.

That's it, it looks great as well.
