Lol, my brother has a thing about hating coca-cola company as well.

Coke employ mercenaries to kill trade union leaders and disband the unions. That's a good reason why some people hate them/won't drink their products.

It's a shame they're far too big and powerful to be affected by any sort of boycott. I don't drink it, but I'm sure many other things I eat and drink fund horrible things around the world. Such a shame that they always do.

He's also really big into fair trade stuff, which is fair enough, it even tastes nicer than cadburys. :puke: But that's mainly because his house mate is a big campaigner and works for the fair trade thing and gets a load of it free. :haha

Hey guys. I talked to Jasper (Resiliance) about this and have received his ok if you are interested.
A blues/jazz radio thread. The basic idea is to allow us to put together a mix of some of our favourite stuff to share with each other. It can be uploaded to www.muxtape.com or http://megaupload.com/. And ya I stole the idea from the Mod Rock forum who stole it from else where. If you're interested I'll start the thread and get it organized. The other forums have a new mix up every two weeks. Seems to work. Lemme know what you think.

Could you point me to some documentation to support that? I'm not a coke fan but I'm not sure I completely buy into that.

American Fact finding delegation (made up of councillors and members from steelworkers of America/America against sweatshops) decided:

To date, there have been a total of 179 major human rights violations of Coca-Cola's workers, including nine murders. Family members of union activists have been abducted and tortured. Union members have been fired for attending union meetings. The company has pressured workers to resign their union membership and contractual rights, and fired workers who refused to do so.
Most troubling to the delegation were the persistent allegations that paramilitary violence against workers was done with the knowledge of and likely under the direction of company managers. The physical access that paramilitaries have had to Coca-Cola bottling plants is impossible without company knowledge and/or tacit approval....

Also important:

'The company's inaction and its ongoing refusal to take any responsibility for the human rights crisis faced by its workforce in Colombia demonstrates-at best- disregard for the lives of its workers.

Coca-Cola's complicity in the situation is deepened by its repeated pattern of bringing criminal charges against union activists who have spoken out about the company's collusion with paramilitaries. These charges have been dismissed without merit on several occasions.'

_____________________
Coca-Cola responded in writing that the "Company does not anticipate supporting in any way any form of 'independent fact-finding delegation to Colombia,'" and that allegations would only be reviewed locally.

ollusion between the state military and paramilitary forces is an open secret in Colombia, and the total impunity of those who terrorize union activists only underscores the connection between legal and illegal actors seeking to suppress union activity.

Columbia is the most dangerous place to be in a union in the world, '169 in 2001, 184 in 2002, 92 in 2003. In all, some 4,000 union members have been assassinated since 1986, and to date no one has been arrested, tried and convicted for a single one of these murders. In addition to murder, unionists have been subject to other forms of violence and terror, including kidnapping, beatings, death threats and intimidation.'.

There's more through the trade union movements throughout the world, but I'm not going into that.

Not directed at you: It's very simple to pretend that when an American or British company does something heinous (like coca-cola, or the British arms companies that sell weapons to anyone and everyone (Saudia Arabia being a good example) that's it's 'anti-capitalist' propoganda. It does, in fact, have nothing to do with being anti-capitalist. I know many fervently capitalist people who are opposed to ridiculous danger that faces anyone who's in a union in Columbia, coke happily take advantage of and perpetuate this fact.

This is way too heavy for here, should be in politics thread...lol

So anyways I'm going to make the Blues/Jazz Radio thread. The idea seems to be well received. Resiliance said he would sticky it for us but it might take a bit for him to get to it.

I have an american friend, and I was at his house today and his dad was like: " U guise! Hai guise!!!1! y dont we go play futball in teh park!!!" and I was like "yh, sounds cool, you up for it Rob?"...so anyway, we walk to the park and his dad was like a street behind coz he was grabbing a ball from their garden, and we get their and he boots the ball over...I was like, his isn't a football! Then got into some argument with them :haha Today's been sick.

Panamerican Beverages (Panamco), Coca-Cola's main bottler in Latin America, has been criticized for its relationship with unions. In Colombia, it has been alleged that the bottling company hired paramilitary mercenaries to assassinate union leaders. These charges have resulted in several court cases and boycott actions against The Coca-Cola Company.

In July 2001, the United Steelworkers of America and the International Labor Rights Fund filed suit in US court against Coca-Cola and some bottlers in Colombia on behalf of their workers [12]. This lawsuit was titled Sinaltrainal v. Coca-Cola. According to the plaintiffs, the companies "hired, contracted with or otherwise directed paramilitary security forces". The companies denied the charges. In April 2003 District Judge Jose E Martinez in Miami excluded The Coca-Cola Company and its Colombian unit because its bottling agreement did not give it "explicit control" over labor issues in Colombia.

In January 2004, New York City based fact-finding delegation, a self-initated group that included some city officials in a personal capacity, on Coca-Cola in Colombia[32] confirmed the workers' allegations. They found:

To date, there have been a total of 179 major human rights violations of Coca-Cola's workers, including nine murders. Family members of union activists have been abducted and tortured. Union members have been fired for attending union meetings. The company has pressured workers to resign their union membership and contractual rights, and fired workers who refused to do so.
Most troubling to the delegation were the persistent allegations that paramilitary violence against workers was done with the knowledge of and likely under the direction of company managers. The physical access that paramilitaries have had to Coca-Cola bottling plants is impossible without company knowledge and/or tacit approval....

The bottler and The Coca-Cola Company deny these allegations. Specifically, The Coca-Cola Company stated in its 2004 proxy[33]

Two different independent inquiries in Colombia—a judicial inquiry by a Colombian Court, and an inquiry by the Colombian Attorney General's office—examined the specific issue of whether managers at a bottling plant were complicit in the murder of a trade unionist. They found no evidence to support the allegation. Further, based on internal investigations conducted by our Company and by our bottling partners, we are confident that allegations the bottlers engaged paramilitaries to intimidate trade unionists are false.
The allegations made against us in Colombia are not merely false; they are repugnant to all of us at The Coca-Cola Company. We agree with the proponents that our Company must clearly demonstrate that we and our bottling partners support human and labor rights and oppose all forms of violence. Our desire is for Coca-Cola to be seen as part of the solution to some of the business issues in Colombia today. We are convinced our current approach will allow for that outcome.
Critics argue that, whatever their source, these assassinations seem to have been helpful to Coca-Cola in eliminating troublemakers from their bottling plants.

there you go

EH, what?

The columbians are TRYING to organise in unions to make their lives better for themselves and to try and defend against companies like this. Coca-cola are KILLING trade unionists, kidnapping them and torturing them and their families to stop this.

How is that ever an OK thing for a business to do?

And what do you mean 'if you want to succeed over there'? Coke succeed everywhere because of these 'business' practises.

That's not just 'how business is conducted' that's muder and torture to keep these people down. That's not acceptable anywhere. Ever.

Again, I don't mean to get all preachy and I don't have anything against people buying coke products but to say 'that's how it's done over there' to justify atrocities isn't right.

I played teh electric.

I completely blew Voodoo Child. I had to sing it as well, and I kept messing up.

Leave my Girl Alone was awesome. Totally nailed it. Sang that one too.

Bring it on home was a bit mixed. I kept wanting to change too early, and I forgot part of the bridge, but it still worked out good because the harp player is a damn good harp player.

I just played rhythm and one solo on Sweet Home Chicago. It was fun.

I love jamming with horn players, except when they can't shut the hell up and let other people go. I know you're a lead instrument, but so are we!

I haven't jammed in ages either, thanks for reminding me of that >:-(

I also just made an amp out of an old walkman I had, it sounds so incredibly lo-fi-y

I made it for the lulz, mainly cause i've been meaning to do it for a while. I still want to find a bigger tape player or boombox at some point to modify and make into an amp. It also is going to be involved in my summer project (an album *GASP*) at some point :P

It is not tube, its a little dinky handheld walkman, solid state, gloriously lo-fi and digital sounding. It has no tone, and its awesome.

And jackal, ow, that hurt :P

Oh, and to assuage my ego...

All in all, it was a fairly good mix. More blues inspired rock than anything though ;) I liked it.

It definately swung more towards the rock side, which I'm fine with, I've been appreciating music with energy recently, which I find is lacking in straight blues (which I still like), but is more present in fuller sounding rock.

The Dylan song is pretty neat, I've been getting more into his electric stuff recently and I figured he'd fit nicely into that section of the mix.

I love Black Betty, its one of my goal songs to play in a packed room at some venue when I get a band together. Its one of those songs that I just go nuts to.

I don't think it was my best mix, my radio show this past semester had some awesome shows. We did blues/blues-rock in the same style as my mix, with a focus on live and rarities. We had some downright kickass shows

That kid ain't playing the blues, no matter what is being said. There ain't no way an 8 year old can play the blues. Sure, he may hit the note, but he can't truely understand what it is that he is playing. I don't hate the video based on the fact that an 8 year old kid is playing with Buddy Guy, I hate it based on the fact that Buddy Guy is giving that kind of respect to an 8 year old kid.

Ha, first time I have been called by my name on this site :D

I agree to a certain extent, but at the same time everyone can feel the blues. I mean, my life is probably never gonna be as hard as the lives of the old bluesmen because I haven't faced poverty, racism, or anything like that. But I don't feel like I am excluded from being able to play the blues because I can, at some level, still relate to it.

But realistically, 8 year old blues would be really stupid. What would they have the blues about? SpongeBob Squarepants playing re-runs?

ze monsta
05-31-2008, 04:43 PM
It's about having fun though...I think you have to take that into account we call these people prodigies but as Joe Bonamassa has said, you can find a better guitar player or singer than me in Denmark Street...It's a case of who gets the attention.

Maybe this kid will turn into another Bonamassa or Mayer. Sure it's a gimmick now, but is it a bad thing in the long run?

I don't think the kid should be blamed or people get annoyed by it, as I doubt he knows anything about it, and just enjoys playing his guitar, singing and being on stage or whatever. And who can blame him?

Beakwithteeth
05-31-2008, 04:49 PM
Not blaming him. Some people (like my sister) just get way worked up over kids like this and it annoys me a lot.

As an 8 year old though I bet there is a lot of parental influence on his playing. I don't know this for sure but my assumption would be his parents are pushing him. But maybe he will become something big some day. Who knows? There's always room for another bluesman.

Blues is a state of mind. There is no way of saying "that's a blues type problem, but that isn't", because blues is about what makes you feel blue. Whether that is racism, poverty, the price of coke increasing, or a teacher giving you an F. Because at the end of the day, you can relate any of those problems to your own life. Its just how you interpret them.

If the kid wrote a song called "Spongebob Blues", it might not be to my liking, but im sure that relate "having to watch Spongebob repeats" to my life.

Yeah, but an 8 year old can't understand the context of the emotion. If one takes that state of mind out of context, it's faking, and you can't fake the blues.

It's about understanding. Whether it's about watching reruns, waiting in line at the store, or shooting your adulterous woman, it's about having a problem, understanding that problem, and dealing with it. I would have more respect for a 14 year old playing blues because they can understand the context of their issues better than an 8 year old.

What a surprise. North Americans talking about their favourite fast food restaurants! I try to give you all the benefit of the doubt, but you all play into the stereotype!

You just can't help yourselves....

:haha

Trust me, I am the absolute anti American stereotype. This is the 1st time I've had fast food in probably more than a month. I wish I lived in Europe so bad..

The lifestyle just sounds better and me and my family would just fit in more it seems like. I don't know, I think it would be sweet to live in Spain or England.

both nice places. although to fit in in spain or england, you need to like football (or what you incorrectly call soccer), and in england, if someone asks you for a fag, it doesn't mean that they're homosexually coming on to you.

Firstly, you can't compare american football to proper football. You can compare it to rugby. In rugby, you wear no padding and every player passes, tackles, kicks, and scores, whereas american footballers are only good at one particular aspect of the sport, and they have to wear padding in case they get a boo boo....

Baseball players are pumped full of steroids, and cricketers don't need gloves to help catch the ball

In the winter, we play football. In basketball, you aren't allowed to touch each other because these huge 7ft+ players are just big pansies...

Our sportsmen are real men.

the problem with american sports is that the play is stopped every 10 seconds! Watching football is great, especially when you're at the stadium. The atmosphere is incredible, and the players are so taleneted

That's because there is too much money in american sports. Once you go professional, you become so rich that you don't need to try any more.

soccer is the most boring sport i've ever seen. along with baseball, basketball, hockey, football, cricket, horse racing, nascar, golf, gymnastics, swimming, biking, boxing, skiing, snowboarding, fishing, climbing, volleyball, curling, pickleball, badminton, racquetball, skateboarding, ice skating, rugby, tennis, rodeo, track, handball, ping pong, softball, and surfing.

i disagree with some of those, and some of them you gotta do in order to enjoy. even nascar would be fun if you did it in the first place.

BTW we do have classifieds I got my peavey classic 30 for $350 and thats pretty damn good! Oh and I would change it from aussie dollars to american but the american i so low that i'm not even going to bother.

I'm planning on getting a Blues Custom, though.

^True. That's why I'm getting an epi. I wouldn't mind having a Reverberocket or a vintage Silvertone, though.

Does anyone know the chords for Roadhouse Blues? It doesn't seem like a conventional 12 bar song.

Beakwithteeth

He pulled, I think is the biggest point. Pulling a string is much easier
