I thought the federal minimum wage was raised to 7?

And you can't live on 8 bucks an hour. The total rent for my apartment is 2100 bucks a month.

nebraskan
06-14-2008, 06:10 AM
Holy crap, I've seen apartments here for $400/month. And you probably could live on $8 here, milk and gas are both expensive as tits now, but the price of most things isn't too high when compared to what I've seen in other places. A 12pack of Miller High Life was only $8 a few weeks ago, but that was on sale....

imgooley
06-14-2008, 06:12 AM
Last time I got gas, I paid 4.60.

And I would die without beer.

nebraskan
06-14-2008, 06:16 AM
Gas is about $3.95 here so we're not getting it much better I guess. Beer prices aren't raising too much to my knowledge, which is good :D

imgooley
06-14-2008, 06:24 AM
That is good.

In fact, I think, I'm gonna throw some in the fridge right now. Miller MGD is good, but High Life is soooooo much better.

theneildeal
06-14-2008, 12:28 PM
ive gone off beer recently. I wouldn't have beer in the fridge, because to me, i'd only have beer if i was in a bar.

That said, there's nothing better than watching the football with mates and a cold Newcastle Brown Ale!

Vagabond21
06-14-2008, 01:03 PM
If beer gets too expensive you can always resort to the hobo/college freshman beers, Natural Ice or Colt .45.

MMMmm yum yum. :puke:

Neil, I've got a lot of money saved up from working, what's something worth investing my money in?

I've always heard land is the best and safest investment.

im not sure how it is in america, but here, housing is the worst thing to invest in at the moment because prices are inflated and the prices are still falling.

I would suggest investing in these stocks in the NYSE:

Microsoft - a consistent company that has averaged 22.569% a year growth since 1990, which is very very good. They've got a strong management team, and they are on a buy recommendation by most brokers

Intel - once again, its grown strongly since 1990, at a rate of 17.506% a year. Although it doesn't have the same amount of broker recommendations as microsoft, its still expected to grow, so i would recommend this.

If you don't know much about stocks, i would suggest looking into mutual funds. This is basically a group of stocks that have been chosen already. If you do, look for oil based mutual funds, because i think that oil prices will be at $200 a barrel in 2009.

Thanks for the advice. I'm just a little leery to invest a lot of money into the market right now since the economy has been all screwy. I'll probably look into the mutual fund thing though.

theneildeal

well, traditionally, bonds are the safer investment when the economy is in a crisis, because essentially, its an IOU with interest. But investments are all about how risk loving you are

06-14-2008, 05:41 PM
It was taken from If I had Possession over Judgement Day, some say Muddy Waters, some say Elmore James. I think it's a traditional song though, Gus Cannon's Jugband did it first I think. It's like all the delta songs with Walkin in the title; they are all from Son House and Charley Patton's stuff.

i assume that most early blues songs started as slave songs. So chances are that you'll never know who wrote these songs

ze monsta
06-14-2008, 05:59 PM
^Not necessarily.

The slave trade was kinda gone by the time blues came about. Share cropping was what held afro-americans down after slavery.

Blues started as field hollers, but songs were written and then performed by itinerant musicians like Ike Zinnerman and Son House, and then Robert Johnson's heard it, next Muddy Waters has heard it, then Eric Clapton has heard it, and so on and so forth.

imgooley
06-14-2008, 06:31 PM
^The Blues was around in the time of slavery too. It started out on the plantation, and was adapted to the conditions of the Jim Crow South.

Most early blues comes from the Church and the Field.

ze monsta
06-15-2008, 10:10 AM
Yeah, but slavery had been around in America since the 17th century, and the blues back then were field hollers. It's been said that it was to make the work go quicker, keep a rhythm of work and to make what you hate - enjoyable.

Blues has been around since the mid 19th century, and was not just a way of making yourself feel better but a way to dance and party.

imgooley
06-15-2008, 10:11 AM
^Both are correct. And Slavery ended in 1864.

I know it's not what people usually look into, but I encourage you to look into a PRS.

I've got a Paul Reed Smith singlecut SE and I love it. I paid $550 (worth $600) for it and wouldn't have any other guitar. It blows fender and gibson out of the water (as far as guitars of the same price are concerned). I know this from personal experience, online reviews, and guys that work at music stores.

I realize it's not cheap, but it might be worth the wait of saving up the $.

Sounds a lot like my Reverend Roundhouse HB :D

I actually considered getting that PRS, but decided to go with the Reverend, never looked back. The one thing I dislike about my Reverend is the sound on the Bridge HB, as it doesn't really handle the gain as well as I'd like it to. I'm going to swap that out with a Gibson Angus Young Signature Humbucker tho, so that'll be no problem. :)

its strange. ive finished uni for the summer, but im kind of bored already. I can't get a job yet because im having an operation next week and ill need to recover for a month. Im looking forward to the start of uni again, but i really want to do something this summer. I don't want to go back to uni and say "you know, i did nowt". I would say that ive seen clapton and mayer but my friends are all rap and dance fans, so they wouldn't know who those two are. Im going try to become good at chinese. Half the people at british unis are chinese, so its pretty important. Thats not a joke by the way!

I have a busy few days ahead..

Tomorrow I have to help take all the PA gear to the pub, help finish building and erecting the new cover for the stage, then work behind the bar for 4 hours..

Saturday I have to help set up the PA and do a soundcheck and just general help finishing setting everything up at the pub, then work 7 - midnight.. Th

Then Sunday I have to help set the PA and everything up again, help with the bar all day, play a half hour set on stage, then I'm working the bar with my girlfriend from 7 - midnight. Plus cleaning everything up as much as possible afterwards and just chillin

Monday will be proper big clean up day and then play the session on monday night..

I'm actually really looking forward to it. I know I'm gonna be tired as **** but it's gonna be so much fun.

Ive just got back from a Eric Clapton gig. It was incredible!! The guy must be pushing 65, but he has so much control of the guitar. I was pretty much centre and 5 rows from the front, so Clapton was 10 metres away from me!! Robert Randolph was supporting him, and although ive just got his Colorblind album, im definitely a fan, and im scouring the internet for one of those slide guitars that he plays! But he kept trying to get everyone to get up and dance, but no one did for several reasons. Firstly, we're English, so we don't dance, and secondly, i was the youngest there by about 20 years. Seriously!

When Clapton came on, it was amazing, because he has stage presence like no one else. I can't remember the set list by the way. He started off with some of his poppier stuff, then electric blues, then acoustic, then acoustic blues, and then his classic songs.

If you ever get the chance to see Clapton, do so whatever the price!

Hate to break it to you dude but a B harp is for F# blues. Good harp though, middle territory so not too high or low, pretty workable. Just practice the blues scale until you know al the notes, then it's just the same as guitar, improv and play them in different orders.

The blues scale is:

2 draw
3 draw (slightly bent)
4 Blow
4 draw bend
4 draw
5 draw
6 blow

I'm missing a note somewhere? 5 blow maybe or 5 draw bend?

The easiest way to try comprehend it is.. Whistle a note (inwards if you can) and then make the note change pitch.. You'll notice you have to move your tongue around in your mouth to modulate the pitch.. It's the same movements that help bend notes on a harmonica.

If you go on the 4 hole draw, draw it with steady force, push the harmonica pretty hard against your lips and then tilt it like you're trying to face it at your nose that should bend the note down.. Then try to make it do the same without having to tilt the harp, you'll get it eventually, it just clicks and you can do it without thinking too much.

Essentially you want to change the direction that the air is flowing over the reed and that causes it to vibrate differently and changes the pitch.

You could shoot the chickens and had these crazy saw gun things that fired a circular saw blade out and killed ****. Awesome old-school game.

Tomorrow I get to jame with like 60% of this band .. http://www.myspace.com/reefybluntandthebiftas1 .. Should be fun, I'm hoping to steal their drummer to complete my band aswell and they've been talking about getting rid of their second guitarist and doing like guest guitarist gigs and **** so hopefully I can impress them and get a shot at that aswell. They're hilarious too, so even if the music is crap is fun to hang out with them.

Meh, they're good enough. Jamming is jamming.

There are a couple of open jam nights at a few bars around here. Once I get settled in a bit more, I'm gonna start doin it.

Kris, i still get IDed when i go to bars. But thats probably because i usually have a shave before i go out. It's my babyface quality! haha

Same as always.

The same metalheads mucking up the pit and EG and GGA forums. Same n00bz coming in and asking for blues suggestions and whatnot.

New AOTM, though.

Was just screwing around on my GFs dad's 335 copy and decided to record my cover of STack Shot Billy, so I recorded the guitar part about 5 times and wasn't happy with it.. Started again and was doing great when the dog (His name's Buddy, after Buddy Guy) came running in and started howling at my amp, but I was doing so good I didn't want to stop, so I finished the song and only got distracted by the dog once when hopped up on my leg but it wasn't a bad screwup, so I kept that guitar track and recorded the vocals for it... Now I have a howling dog blues version of Stack Shot Billy and I think it is cool. The End.

Anyway will have it up on my myspace tonight probably and let you guys listen, I think it's pretty cool apart from the one screwup.

Also last night was great fun jammin with this other guitarist and drummer but I think I'm gonna kinda drop the idea of an electric band for a while and get the drummer (who is not actually a drummer but a great rhythm guitarist and songwriter and singer) to jam a bit and try get an acoustic type bluesy rootsy folky thing happening. Hope that works out because there isn't anything like that around here and I think it would go down well, all the bands around here are just like electric rock cover bands. They're good but it gets boring.

Lulz at the wailing dog. Kinda adds some flavor to the mix. I'm surprised you didn't mess up.

You played it straight, without a slide?

Sorry guys, I'm not very well versed in jazz, but could anyone tell me what "genre" of jazz can be heard sampled in this song by EZ rollers. At least I take it to be jazz, right?

Evening Goolz.

Tim, I'll check your recording in a sec. Your version of Stack Shot Billy (live) was quite good. :)

MONSTA EDIT:

^That's drum n bass isn't it?

MONSTA EDIT2:
I feel like an idiot because I realise you were talking about sampling... :(

MONSTA EDIT3:

At a guess it's Bop of some sort, slowed down.
Sounds a bit like elevator music. :haha

What's everybody think of the jazz-fusionesque section of Opeth's The Lotus Eater?

imgooley
06-27-2008, 04:05 PM
^I doubt anyone around here listens to Opeth. I don't, and I listen to more metal than most of the other blues forum goers.

EDIT: I also don't care for fusion all that much either. But that's just me.

nebraskan

I guess not everybody has the same base music tastes as me lol, but I figure that if someone who likes blues does listen to metal it would be Opeth, followed by bands like Diablo Swing Orchestra and UneXpect.
It's worth a listen even if you don't like metal IMO.

Dimebag22

I saw Opeth live once with Progressive nation, I didn't like them that much, just the vocals weren't my thing. I need clean vocals.

What other music do you listen to, Goolz, other than blues and jazz? I only ever hear you talking about those two genres.
