What other music do you listen to, Goolz, other than blues and jazz? I only ever hear you talking about those two genres.
Everything except for european stuff (like classical and european folk, and electronic music). I hate electronic music for the most part.
I love hip hop, metal (including metalcore, but not nu metal [i'm including metalcore with my metal as spite to the asinine redundancy of UG]), punk (especially hardcore punk), classic rock, folk, soul, R&B, funk...
That's pretty much it.
Oh, and Reggae and Ska.

Sweet dude. for having a very diverse taste :p:
Yeah I'm mostly into Ska and Reggae. I've seen Ill Scarlett and they rocked. They might be my favourite band at the moment along with Sublime, Slightly Stoopid and Bedouin Soundclash. Then of course Bob Marley, and I saw his son (Damian Marley) play live.
Metal. More classic metal though, like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, but then also stuff like Pantera, Metallica and BLS.
I actually saw Iron Maiden live not too long ago, it was fucking insane! I saw BLS a while back and it was AMAZING also.
Then of course like classic rock. I've seen Roger Waters live and it was the best concert I've ever been too, I've also seen Def Leppard, and Van Halen. A bunch more too, I've seen Led Zepplica (a Led Zeppelin tribute band) and RAIN (a Beatles Tribute band) and they were both amazing.
And if I'm in the mood I'll listen to some modern rock like Coldplay, Pearl Jam, RHCP, Stone Temple Pilots all that kind of stuff. I saw the STP live at a festival not to long ago, maybe 2 weeks ago. It was pretty sick.
:haha Sorry for the epicly long post :p:

^I'm realllly picky with modern rock. I don't like STP at all, or coldplay. I love me some alternative sometimes, though. I will also listen to some pop punk.
I literally listen to everything, except for classical music. I love me some Down and Black Flag.

Goolz - Yeah I played it without a slide, didn't have one handy I left mine in my acoustic case at the pub with my guitar from sunday.
I listen to (or used to, don't very often these days) Opeth, I have most of their albums and I love their softer stuff probably way more than the brutalz stuff. The singer does have a great proper singing voice and epic growls. I suppose a lot of their stuff on like Blackwater Park and the softer stuff is pretty jazzy though I'm not really into jazz.
I'm pretty open about music genres, if I'm choosing it's usually gonna be blues but I also listen to a fair bit of metal (not brutalz black metal crap but mostly doom or proggish stuff like Tool, Isis, Jesu, Opeth etc.) and classic and modern rock. Loads of acousticy songwriter stuff and some country/bluegrass, just starting to get into that lately. I like some hardcore and punk but I'm pretty picky there, mostly Minor Threat and Dead Kennedys and The Living End.
Basically I will listen to anything but things like rap or techno would always be last last resorts.

I'm happy, I've got some more gigs lined up just as like a support for some bands from the pub around town, just gonna be me playing solo acoustic maybe a bit of a set before the bands and in the middle to give them a break. Really looking forward to it I'm gonna knuckle down and finish some songs I've been writing too and learn some more covers so I have more songs to choose from.
Also I've been asked to play guitar in a once off band thing to play some Paramore covers and some other lame shiit. Lol I'm gonna do it anyway though just because I like to play. Pretty gay though.

How complex do you want to get with the recording?
I use a ZOOM H4 4track digital recorder, has built in microphones and crap and you can use it as a stand alone recorder, or you can USB it up to your computer and use it as an interface into cubase or whatever recording program you want to use. Also has built in Zoom modelling crap for guitar and stuff. It's very good and handy since it's so small and portable. Check it out anyway, all my stuff on my myspace is recorded with it just using the built in microphones and the actual recorder, not plugged it into cubase or anything.
They're pretty cheap too I think for how good they are.

OK - Hard Rock Calling was AWESOME.
After some old guys playd some fun Thin Lizzy/ Purple style classic rock (coz they won a competition) on came Robert Randolph and The Family Band. They played the best version of Voodoo Child I have EVER heard. Mind blowing. The bassist is awesome, and a good singer! Robert Randolph is such a great showman as well, he stood on his chair sang, had a foot up on his pedal steel whilst playing, and drank his coke as he played!
They had an awesome set, despite me not being able to remember much.
Next up: Jason Mraz - power pop superstar from San Diego. He really got the crowd going (he's pretty big in England), he really changed my opinion on mainstream pop music. He was fantastic. After one of his originals they went into Three Little Birds by Bob Marley (epicly good). It was like he had the weather on cue, it had been nice all day but as soon as he went on and started playing the sun came right out and whenever his songs mentioned the wind it was suddenly a nice cool breeze.
Check him out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkHTsc9PU2A
Next: John Mayer. Distinctly unimpressive to be honest...I was disappointed. His songs were good, his voice suited the occasion and the mood but the highlights were definitely his solos. Guitar wise he was great. He only played one blues song which was annoying, but with so many songs that he could choose from - fair enough. The blues song was Mercy by Duffy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KE2orthS3TQ which he turned into a great slow blues.
Sheryl Crow was pretty good, I thought it would be the time I would go and grad some food and use the toilets, but I stayed to watch and was really glad I did.
Eric Clapton: ****ING AWESOME. Wow, just WOW.
First up was Tell The Truth, then Key To The Highway, Hoochie Coochie Man and Outside Woman Blues.
He played a few Robert Johnson songs (Little Queen of Spades, Travellin Riverside Blues and for the encore Crossroads). He played Motherless Children by Blind Willie Johnson about halfway through which was amazing.
His last three songs were incredible - Wonderful Tonight (to which everyone sang along), Layla and Cocaine. Absolutely brilliant, I sang along to every song like a right little Fanboy wearing my Blackie T-shirt. :p: Then they went off. There was a few minutes of applause and screaming (much of me and a some blokes next to us screaming GOD!!!!!!!) eventually the yelling and claping died down. So it was time for slowhand claps (oh the irony!), and finally EC came back on and played an incredible Crossroads with Robert Randolph, Sheryl Crow and John Mayer. Absolutely fantastic.
MONSTA EDIT:
Set list:
Eric Clapton's Hyde Park Set List - 28 June 2008
01. Tell The Truth
02. Key To The Highway
03. Hoochie Coochie Man
04. Outside Woman Blues
05. Here But I'm Gone
06. Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad
07. Driftin'
08. Rockin' Chair
09. Motherless Child
10. Travellin' Riverside Blues
11. Running On Faith
12. Motherless Children
13. Little Queen of Spades
14. Before You Accuse Me
15. Wonderful Tonight
16. Layla
17. Cocaine
Encore:
18. Crossroads (with Sheryl Crow, John Mayer and Robert Randolph)
Worth every penny of the 50 quid spent.
On other news, I'm mondo pissed as I have no idea where my slide has gone so I've been using a shotglass to do Empire State Express with recently (pretty much the only proper song I can play with a slide efficiently).

Im thinking about buying a new pedal as well. What pedals do you guys use for overdrive and distortion for your blues and jazz playing. I used to use my brothers Boss DS-1 because i couldnt afford to buy my own pedal. Anyways it wasnt really that good and my brother moved out so i need a new pedal. Ive been looking at the RAT, Big Muff, and BD-2 but i havent tried out any of them yet. And theres a used Digitech Sreamin Blues for only 20 bucks at my local shop. Any advice?

I like the BD-2 over the screamin blues, but that's just me. But I wouldn't personally suggest putting either in front of a tube amp, as the bypasses are lacking. If I needed an OD pedal right now, and I was going to go buy one, I would pick up a ts9 and mod it to ts808 specs.
TheDev01dOne
06-30-2008, 10:11 AM
Just save your money and get a good amp with nice overdrive and you don't need pedals screwing with your signal.
I play straight into my amp 99% of the time. Looking or a Wah pedal now but apart from that I doubt I'll ever use many pedals. Just get a nice tube amp, turn it up nice and loud and play.

so ive just come home after having an operation on my jaw. its strange because my face is swollen so i look like a fat version of myself. But i can't wait to see what i look like when the swelling has gone down. For those of you that don't know what happened, i had a bit of an overbite, so my jaw has been lined up. I was stuck in hospital over the weekend, which is sinfully boring. But on friday, dazed and confused, i read the UG Blues album review! how great is that!?!
So ill pick up on a few topics that you've been talking about:
1. i don't do drugs, but i occasionally have some alcohol. It seems great when you're 18 and starting uni, so you have the freedom to drink all the time, but its just so expensive. plus, im a generous drunk, so ill end up buying drinks for people when im drunk, which is so bad!
2. Gus, the clapton setlist was identical to the Nottingham gig i think, except the encore. I would have loved to see him play Crossroads. Randolphs version of Voodoo Child wasn't great because it was an instrumental, but it kept sounding like he was going to start singing. So when he ended the song, i was disappointed
By the way, don't ask for a photo of how i look now. When im a big wall street exec, i don't want something like this haunting my career! ha! There's a reason why hospitals ban cameras here!

Just make a new compressed folder like .zip or .rar then put the songs you want in there and upload the folder to megaupload.
I think if you make the folder first normally then right click it and it should say something like Send to > compressed folder.. click that and it should work.

On the OD situation, I have a Marshall Bluesbreaker OD pedal, not that I use it (well haven't for ages) but it is a class pedal for some real dirty bllues sounds, I only use my Boss ME-50 infront of my amp, just for the Noisegate and sometimes the wah.
But I'd love to have them as separate units. . one day.

I had a load of pedals but sold them all off because I never used them. The only one I kept was my MXR 10-Band EQ just because it's a handy thing to have with my 12w head since there is no EQ on there so I can use the pedal instead.
Looking at buying a good Wah now just to try to learn how to use one but I still doubt it would be permanently plugged in, only when I feel like using it, I don't see the point in have a pedalboard with 15 pedals on there always plugged in and never getting used.
Anyway..
Just posted a new Blues AOTM for July so chec it out guys. Do I have to PM someone to sticky it or will they do it automatically?

I, too, am a pedal minimalist.
All I have is a Fuzz, a wah, an OD, and a tuner. The only other thing I'm considering, but probably won't get, is a EQ.

I guess it makes sense that all us blues players are minimalists. The only pedal I currently use is a tubescreamer.
I'm thinking about buying a wah, but I'm not sure that I would really use it all that much, and I'm not sure if it would justify spending the money for a decent one.

+1 Get a sweet boutique Wah, they hold their value really well if you ever do get sick of it but the cheap ones tend to put people off wahs alltogether. You may aswell get a killer one straight off so you can be teh ownzorz. RMC Picture wah, Budda Budwah, Fulltone Clyde Deluxe.. All great choices.
On a jazz note..
A guy at the session I go to is a reallllly good guitar player and he just plays comedy songs, he does it so well he's hilarious.. But he adapted this song onto guitar and it's ****ing crazy..

Kinda creepy but I had a dream with you in it last night Goolz.. I was on the way home from somewhere, walkig down kind of an alley and then you were there with a bunch of other people, we all seemed to know each other and you gave me a guitar and I played something (don't remember what song or anything but it was blues) then I gave it you back and you started talking about your girlfriend just left you but then slowly started playing guitar along to it, by the end it was like talking blue but with clever inner rhymes in the lyrics and great slide riffs and just general epicness. It really was awesome, I woke up thinking damn I wish I could remember all of that song.
The only line I kinda remember was a bit of a chorusy bit and you hushed everyone down (we were all singing along by this point) and went acapella, I think the words were "She's got me on the down low" It was down-something anyway.
So yeah, get out of my dreams and stop hogging up all the good songs in them.
EDIT: Also the 335 I was playing is a Henri Oiseau copy, it's quite nice.. Check his website http://www.henrioiseau.com/home

I went from being really into classic rock (Zeppelin and stuff) in 5th - 6th grade, to being very into pop punk ( ) in 7th grade, back to classic rock again in the 2nd half of 8th grade, which then got me into blues, and for 3 years I haven't looked back.

For my Long Gone Blues. I got the Minor 6th/5th chords going on for the intro. It goes: | Bm6 | A#m6 | Am6 | G#m5
Then there's another one. Say you are in the Key of E, so you go the the 5th fret and press the A string down to get D, and press the B string on the 5th fret too to make an E. Then slide down the A string to the 4th fret to make a C# but keep the E on the B string. Then slide the A string down to the 3td fret to make a C and keep the E note, then play the open A string and hammer on on the 2nd fret to make a B then play the open B string.
That probably make no sense at all though... listen to my song (just the intro) and you'll probably understand better.

False.
That's what I thought coming over here too but I got my Orange cheaper in Aus than I could get it for here anywhere.. Crazy since it's made in the UK and it should have no export costs etc.
The problem? VAT.. 17.5% tax on EVERYTHING.. even with the strong currency and stuff the VAT makes everything far more expensive than anywhere else, even stuff that is made in UK.
And Goolz gear isn't that expensive in Australia.. I paid a LOT less for my Esquire than the price he has listed on the website and I got a hard case and 5 sets of strings... Website prices are only the prices for suckers who are too lazy to go into the actual shop, get to know the guy a bit (I used to go in about once a fortnight) and then haggle with him and drive a hard bargain.
I was at a friends house and recorded a new version of my song with some distorted lead stuff over it and killer fretless bass action. Haven't had a good listen to it just yet but hopefully it's good enough quality for blues album #2..

That's a pretty sick track, man. I liked how the tempo increased into the solo.

That looks like 2 different chords.
You have a E Major 7 and a F#. Is it a Emaj13?

Yeah I think that's it. But in a E maj 13, there is a C# too.

Hectic tuning, I'm trying to work on DADFAD (Dm I ca do it okay) DADF#AD (Dmajor, know 1 song but learning more) and DADGAD (trying to learn to fingerpick interesting chord progs)
Why did Goolz get banned this time? Anyone know.. Gonna be quiet again without him.

Spend £1000 on a Matamp and £1000 on a guitar? Problem solvered.

im listening to your song, and its great! To me, it sounds like a indie blues songs, if you know what i mean, and its a great style. Also, its not deep blues (i.e. delta) so more non-blues fans will enjoy it.
Great work!

Thanks man, glad people like it, I'm actually quite proud of it myself. (Narcissistic I know)
And yeah the dogs are always making noise.. On the first recording of On My Way they bark at the end because the postman just came and they like to eat the mail.
On Stack Shot Billy the dog is howling almost all the way through, he howls to pretty much any musical instrument, even just CDs make him howl. He was trying to scratch his way into my speaker cab, howling whilst I was recording the guitar part for Stack Shot Billy.
I just leave it in, dogs are pretty bluesy Lol
Also I don't volunteer for the banning either, my next is a permaban :(

Happy birthday neil! You should get a marshall bluesbreaker if you have the cash, that is the best amp in the world.
And I've always wondered what it would be like to be banned, maybe I'll join Goolz. But I wouldn't know how to get myself banned. Did anyone see the post he got banned for? Its incredibly stupid that he got banned for it.

You could PM Frenchy and ask him to ban you for a week or something because you really need to work and UG distracts you. It doesn't go on record and I'm pretty sure they let you do that.

Yeah, same here man.
And my dream strat would be blue, with that mint greenish pick gaurd (like the 50's reissue Classic Players), beat up so that some of the finish is coming off, with a really beefy neck and a rosewood fretboard (I used to love maple, but I think I'm more a fan of rosewood now), and Texas Special pickups. :liplick:

theneildeal
07-07-2008, 09:54 AM
well, i wouldn't say no, but 30 year old beat Les Paul's are ridiculously expensive. Well, Gibson's in general are too expensive for what they are. I also find that Les Paul's are too heavy and they're uncomfortable.
But lets just hope that one day ill be in a position to turn down a beat up Les Paul for reasons other than financial!

But on another note, I saw a video of Gary Moore yesterday, and let me say this, he is one SHITTY guitarist. Man, that was horrible. It was a cover of Red House, and I've never seen anyone take a dump on a song like he did. Let me see if I can find the link.

Hmm, maybe I'll check into those. I don't have the cash for new pickups now, but I would like some in the near future.
And just to be fair, I watched some more Gary Moore videos, and hes not THAT bad, I just think he's going a little over the top, especially with that vibrato :shudders:
