I'll probably be stringed up by my testes for this but...

The same happened with me for the Hendrix albums I had. Aquiring new material / giving it a rest for a little while really refreshs you, now I listen to it all the time again :D

I did that with John Mayer too. I had a HUGE Mayer run, same with Pink Floyd and Black Label Society. I listen to them all in moderation now. :)

Tell me about it! Ive done it with loads of artists: John Mayer, GNR, Hendrix, Led Zep, Jamie Cullum, Coltrane, etc

Hell, i can't even listen to GNR anymore because im bored of it. And before someone says that the new album will be out soon, i have it and its meh.

Yeah I think everyone does this. I try not to now that I've done it a few times.. I'm still all Pink Floyded out from years ago when it was pretty much ALL I listened to.. Just starting to go bac and listen to A Perfect Circle and Tool again since I had a massive MJK binge researching all his lyrics and crap whilst waiting for 10 000 Days to come out.

I really try not to do it now 'cos it's never relly the same again once that enthusiasm for a certain artist has kind of died.

I've just recently gone through and sorted out ALL my MP3s and got rid of everything that I didn't have the full album of and all the ****ty throw away stuff that I never listen to anymore..

Ended up with about 30Gb and I'm genuinely surprised how much of it is blues.. I've only been really big on blues for about 1 year and it easily makes up 1/2 of all my music, if not almost 3/4.. I think that's one thing I love so much about it is there's just so much good stuff you could listen to a new album everyday for your entire life and not run out of awesome music.

do any of you play harmonica? got any tips on how to bend notes?

also are there blues guitarists who play harmonica at the same time as guitar? I've only seen folk players like dylan do it.

TheDev01dOne
03-03-2008, 10:44 PM
A way I know how to do it (I'm not very good just been trying to teach myself from internet stuff) is to play a single note draw and keep drawing while you tilt the harmonica so the 'front' goes up near your nose, that 'should' bend it and give you an idea of how chaging the airflow direction bends the note.. (Again: I can't really do it properly yet but that's how I've been trying to learn) Some holes are easier to bend than others too, have a look around on the net anyway there's loads of stuff I've found that helps.

I really wish I could play well but it's surprisingly harder than it looks!

Carswell98
03-03-2008, 10:58 PM
I am actually interested in learning the harmonica, what type/key should I buy?

imgooley
03-03-2008, 11:02 PM
I know that I want to get one in A minor or E minor, since I always play in A minor or E minor

Dimebag22
03-03-2008, 11:24 PM
I have one in C but I never play it. I guess I just need to try it out and see how it goes. I've never really spent time learning it.

TheDev01dOne
03-03-2008, 11:24 PM
I don't think you can get minor/major harmonicas? I think they're all the same.

The thing to remember is blues harmonicas are played cross-harp style so if you want to play over blues in G you need a C harmonica, to play over A you need a D harmonica.. The easiest way to figure it out is to use the 2nd chord in a 12bar blues prog and use a harmonica in the same key.

Carswell98

how can you play a minor scale on a harp that only has major notes? unless you have a chromatic harp

sre9981
03-04-2008, 12:58 AM
You can play in the relative major key. For example, use a C harmonica to play over an A minor progression, although for blues, its easier to use a D harmonica for that.

imgooley
03-04-2008, 02:35 AM
My bro has a C harmonica and it sounded funny when I tried to play with an E minor prog. Maybe that is because I suck..... should practice more

sre9981
03-04-2008, 02:45 AM
Genrally for blues harp, you choose the harp which is 3 keys below the key you want to play in. So for G blues, you use a C harp, for A blues, a D harp, etc.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here?

Jimmy94

this is correct

remember, a minor progression is just a major progression with a different root note (the VI).

so should I go with a Hohner just because they are easy to find, or something different/better?

TheDev01dOne
03-04-2008, 11:12 AM
I bought 2 Hohner marine bands that were like Ģ20 each and then a Hohner blues band that was like Ģ5 and I prefer the cheap one. The expensive ones sound better but the cheap one with plastic comb feels better and easier to play.

I am currently (and have been for the last year) been learning that song, gut i can really only play it up through the first chorus, mainly because I just improvise around the scale and chords (but once I find something that works, I stick with it.) It is one of the most difficult songs to play well.

That said, my brother plays it note for note, and he makes it sound terrible.

TheDev01dOne
03-04-2008, 05:38 PM
Yeah I hear Little Wing is a bitch to play, didn't Jimi improv the whole thing or something and it never plays the same thing twice?

ATM I'm trying to learn 'I Need You Tonight' by ZZ Top and it has 3 layered guitar tracks but I'm trying to figure out a way to play it decently with 1 guitar and failing miserably so far. Such a good song though.

Jimmy94
03-04-2008, 06:38 PM
yes, Jimi did improv everything and it takes a fairly good knowledge of music theory (either learned or innate) to replicate it.

hmmm, this is what I've been spinning lately when it comes to blues and jazz

jazz
thelonius monk quartet with john coltrane - at carnegie hall
miles davis - bitches brew
George Benson - White Rabbit (this one is awesome, I don't hear about it very often, but it's highly recommended!)
Grant Green - Idle Moments (a classic)

blues
john lee hooker - boogie chillun (sweet live set, from the audience it sounds like there's no more than 30 people there, maybe at some kind of restaurant)
reverend gary davis - harlem street singer (if I had my way... I WOULD TEAR this old building down!)

I just realized that I now have more jazz in my collection than blues! I wonder when that happened

Ok, I've been watching Ken Burns' Jazz, and I have been thinking. Jazz (and to a lesser extent blues) used to be the most popular music in the United States. What happened? I mean kids used to go out to bebop clubs and stuff, get loaded, and dance and stuff to swing, but Jazz and blues are like obscure to most people these days.

Since I am a 19 year old guy, I tend to focus on my demographic, and most people in my demographic don't really care about blues and jazz. Is it because it's old?

Idk, just an off topic musing.

theneildeal
03-05-2008, 06:17 PM
ive found that a lot of people our age (im 20) do like jazz, but they don't know how to get into it. The likes of Michael Buble, Jamie Cullum et al are popular with the younger generations, but they wouldn't know how to venture further into jazz. But this new wave of smooth jazz musicians is a great thing because it is getting lots of people on the brink of liking jazz, and everyone has heard of Miles Davis and John Coltrane, so they are obvious places to start. And lets face it, you can't get much better than Miles and Coltrane!!

But the problem is that jazz isn't "cool" to young people. When Miles was around, he was one of the biggest names in music, but nowadays there will be lots of people as good as Miles who are relatively unknown outside of the jazz circle.

Also, correct me if im wrong, but weren't the big jazz names of the 50's/60's "the guys to be seen with" in the party scene? Nowadays, its rappers, heiresses etc, and they are popular.

Genres go through cycles. They will be immensely popular for a while, and then forgotten. Jazz is just a bit forgotten at the moment, but we need a real superstar to emerge to bring jazz back to the forefront of modern music

TheDev01dOne
03-05-2008, 06:53 PM
I gotta admit I listen to LOADS of different music but I don't think Jazz is one of them. It is pretty difficult to get into IMO.. The closest things to Jazz I have are Louis Armstrong's Saint James Infirmary, the only proper Jazz track I can think of.. Or Jazz-fusion math metal like Between The Buried And Me..

I really don't even know where to begin looking into Jazz and I'm kinda unsure I'd appreciate it as much as I should with my extremely limited knowledge of music theory.

Jimmy94

he's definitely sweeping, it was a standard technique for jazz even back in the 30's I think, and chet was very heavily influenced by jazz.

Another one of Neil's stories:

This year, i transferred universities, so i make the effort to keep in touch with my mates from my old uni. This week, i was talking to a friend who i haven't spoken to in ages, and i was asking him about what's going on up in st andrews, how everyone is etc. He told me about how one of my friends was caught cheating on his dissertation work. What happened is that he's handed in some chemistry coursework, and the professors have accused him of making up the results. So now he is taking the rest of the year off and is going to australia, starting 3rd year again next year. But he spent a year at another uni before he started in st andrews, and now he will spend 5 years there, so it will take him 6 years to get a bachelors degree! But the thing that really confused me about the whole thing is that he got the chance to appeal, but doesn't want to, despite maintaining that he didn't cheat! Also, if you make up the results, you would make them believable!

I know people that have been thrown out of uni for cheating, so i don't really understand why he's been allowed to return next year. But, who knows! I don't envy him when he gets his student loan bill after his degree!

Ok, sorry to break up your conversation but I would like to make an announcement. :p:

Our band got 2nd place at the Battle of the Bands :D

The funny thing was is that most of our points came from the Hendrix jam that was all improvised by me. :haha

It was good fun though and we weren't expecting to come even close to 1st.

That's pretty awesome man! So what did you guys play?

it's sickening because the dead were all about the fans trading live music... they set up taping sections at concerts for anyone that wanted to record the shows, people have traded tapes for decades. And the website had such a great community, similar to this one but even stronger and more active, all for the love of the music.

Nice man, enjoy that thing, I've been contemplating selling my amp and buying a pro-junior, an overdrive pedal, and a good attenuator but I really like all the options my Laney gives me for when I'm (rarely) not playing blues.

Random question.. Does Charlie Hunter make decent music? Yes I'm a n00b and I only know of him from that John Mayer In Repair video but he seems prtty good. Does he have his own band or something?

He's very good. that instrument that he plays is incredible! Its strange to hear the bass and the guitar played by the same person on the same instrument. For those of you that like Robert Johnson, its just like realising that there isn't another guitarist, and its all Robert Johnson!

That what I was thinking. I mean, the deluxe is probably going to be obnoxiously and unnecessarily loud so the Blues Junior would be a more sensible option. Then again, I'm going to play a couple first.

Jimmy94
03-08-2008, 06:04 PM
you also have to consider that the deluxe sounds a lot better than the blues junior. to be honest, I never cared for the BJ all that much, maybe after a speaker change.

I saw a random blues band at a pub last night, I forget what they were called but it was 3 old guys; drummer, guitarist on acoustic 95% of the time and singing, and another guy playing flute, saxophone, telecaster, blues harp and singing. They were all at least 60..

They were pretty good anyway, the guitarist was playing sweet fast licks on this crappy looking yamaha acoustic he had, the drummer was pretty stock standard but the other oldest guy (looked about 70 -80) playing jazz flute and sax and harp was amazing. I guess it's just because you don't hear it very often but the songs he played flute on sounded awesome with acoustic guitar. Now I want to find a jazz flute player to jam with!

Anyone know any other blues stuff with flute on it? Apart from the new Black Keys song, I got that already.

I've always had the problem

Jimmy94
03-09-2008, 01:49 PM
then it's probably not the tubes. when tubes need to be changed it's because they've gotten progressively worse or flat out failed.

Try looking up reviews of your amp and see if other people have the same problem with it. Many times before an amp can really shine the stock speaker needs to be changed.

Ok, I was playing around at GC today, and the first thing that I was playing with was a full hollow Electromatic through a Mesa. I think that thing had a recti in it because it kicked out some sloppy, nasty (but in a good way) fuzz.

So then I play some Black Keys (Your Touch to be exact). As I am playing, that same exact song came on in the store.

After that, I thought that it was a cool thing.

So then I pick up a nice little sunburst Am Vintage strat with a lefty trem and start playing some Stevie through a vintage vibroverb (Pride and Joy was the song) and what do you know, that was the next song.

I was thinking, Has God endowed me with the power to select the songs that come on in Guitar Center? That is fucking sweet.

So then i go and pick up a martin and started playing some Bob Marley. Sadly, my streak ended there. (Damn racist song selction [jk])

I thought that was funny. Oh well

So I'm listening to the Black Snake Moan OST and I was wondering if anyone knows what tuning Sam Jackson uses

Is Black Snake Moan any good? The movie? I've heard it's pretty boring and long-winded. Is it worth seeing just to see Samuel L play guitar?

Is there any planes or snakes,, that might spice things up a little?

So I just had a celebratory "do what ever the **** I want" day after getting that job, so I went to a music store and literally just tried everything and and anything in reach for hours,

some guy came in about an hour before the store closed looking for a new amp, so the salesman was showing him this really nice little combo amp(it was covered in blue velvet :p: ) anyways, he somehow gets on to the topic of his old gear, where he just so happens to have a mint condition 1960's Vox AC15 just sitting in his closet

and he didn't even know it was worth playing, the salesman and I looked at each other and shared a moment of disbelief, and proceeded to tell him that little amp is not only worth a couple of grand but is better than anything in the store.

he left one happy guy, and we got some good laughs out of it :haha

and then I watched "Be Kind Rewind" which was pretty good actually

just a good day in general. WOOT!

TheDev01dOne

If noone was around I bet the salesman would've tried to scam him out of that vox!

"I have an old vox from the 60s in my cupboard I haven't touched for years. I need a new amp since I'm going to start playing again."

"Ah well this is a Fender frontman, one of the best, most popular amps these days. We've got it on special for $300 but if you were looking to get rid of your old amp we could probably do a trade in and give it to you for $150"

Sadly enough, **** like that does happen. A salesman I befriended in a shop back in Aus that I used to frequent was bragging to me one day how he scammed some old guy out of a 60s Fender bassman that he brought in looking to sell with no idea of it's worth. He said he took it straight to the vintage guitar dealer up the road and made like $2000..

Do you guys think it would be better for me to just keep using my Laney for blues or get a valve junior head so I can crank it to 10 and just use that? Been kinda wanting something simpler for bluesing lately, especially if/when my band starts gigging, but I don't want to get rid of my Laney and lose the versatility it has.

EDIT: Does anyone here use SoulSeek? Sooo much good music on there in the Blues chatroom and soo many knowledgable people. It's awesome, I suggest all you people get it, you'll never know how you lived without it.

Ill check that out soon!

Anyway, let me tell you why ive gone 30 hours without sleep. I had to catch a train at 3am to the airport, and i should have slept, but there was double csi and law & order on! how could i go to sleep!! So i planned to sleep on the train, but a posse of chavs insisted on playing dance music as loud as possible on their phones, and told me to **** off when i told them to turn it off. If it was just one chav, being a martial artist, iīd have threatened him, but there were 10 of the delinquants, so i thought better of it.

To avoid missing my plane, i drank my bodyweight in coffee, so i got no sleep there, and on the plane, we had to endure gale force winds and turbulence throughout, so i dídnt get any sleep. One thing about me is that i cannot sleep during the day. I physically canīt do it! So i have to wait until tonight......

Anyway, there you have it - the ramblings of an insomniac!

TheDev01dOne
03-12-2008, 12:10 PM
Lol I get really spaced out and weird when I don't sleep, and I'm the opposite I like to be awake at night and sleep in the day. I usually go to bed at about 2-4am and sleep until like midday or later if I can get away with it. It's not helping my chances at looking for jobs though unfortunately!

Where were you jet-setting off to anyway? Somewhere tropical I hope? The weather here has been ****ed for like 2 weeks and it started THE DAY I decided to buy myself a bike and start riding BMX again! I've ridden it like twice in 2 weeks, makes me a sad panda.

theneildeal
03-12-2008, 12:18 PM
yeah im in barcelona visitin my girlfriend

the weather was so bad this morning. we took off, and the wind was so strong that it pushed the plane in a completely new direction! everyone on the plane was screaming, and its given me a headache. bastards

it should be good weather for biking, but i donīt know whatīs going on at the moment. I hae a habit of taking britains bad weather and bringing it to barcelona, so give it a few days!

TheDev01dOne
03-12-2008, 12:26 PM
I'd rather be in Barcelona I think, sounds nice to me. I'm just bitter because I've had 2 winters in a row.. Came over to UK in September so I had Australian winter (which was actually pretty crappy weather last year) and now an English winter.. Hopefully it warms up for summer, it's getting depressing!

I hope for exciting things like turbulance (or crates full of snakes even..) to happen on planes, it's so boring stuck there with a bunch of strangers.

[copy paste from the s&l community thread :p:]

i played john mayer's slow dancing in a burning room last night.

my first concert ever. i hate hate hate being on stage. i have the worst stage fright ever :(

but i played it well, however the amps they had were atrocious. my friend had to use a bass amp so his solos were dead. i played through a broken line six spider. the reverb wasn't working on it, which is a key part of the tone in the song. my volume was also too low.

but the horrible thing was, when we finished my music teacher came on stage, and in front of everybody (400-500 or so) she said into the mic 'well, it was interesting'. she then proceeded to avoid us for the rest of the night and got the other music teacher to tell us how we played. she was impressed and told us to ignore what teacher A said.

nevertheless, i hate performing and i'm not planning on doing it again for a long time. :\

how was everybody else's day?

theneildeal
03-12-2008, 01:00 PM
mate, ive got stage fright. But its not just stage fright. when i try to record, my playing is apalling! I donīt know what it is! but what i would suggest is play in front of a couple of people and then just keep working up from there. doing your first performance in front of 500 people deserves kudos! Im sure that it went better than you think.

About my day, read above.......

TheDev01dOne
03-12-2008, 01:15 PM
Yeah that's super harsh man, don't worry about that ****.

The only way to get over the nerves and get good at performing is to keep doing it, the main question isn't about.. 'did everyone like it' ... 'did it sound perfect' etc. but "Did you have fun?" If you enjoyed it, that's all that matters.

I've only recently started playingat sessions and singing, and it was the first time I've EVER sung to ANYONE in my life.. I was nervous as hell and made loads of mistakes but I had fun doing it, so I kept it up and now I'm not nervous anymore and I love it.. BUT.. I still make lots of mistakes, it just doesn't bother me because the reality is it happens to EVERYONE.. As long as you keep going and don't make a big deal about it, NO ONE WILL CARE.

Seriously if it was your first gig and you had crappy equipment then don't let that discourage you from performing live. Just having the courage to get up and perform is a huge deal so don't lose your nerve now.. I know it took me over 10 years to perform to other people and I regret not doing it earlier because it's the funnest, most satisfying part of being a musician..

It's totally cliche but as long as you enjoy it, that's all that matters. And usually if you're enjoying it other people will too!

Dude...that's kind of odd, cause I went to a school concert last night and there a couple of guys playing John Mayer there...

So I tried a blues junior for the first time today

I also tried a zinky blue velvet, and a crate 18w tube amp

I can see why people love those fenders, it was the best clean I have ever heard, it was orgasmic, and it sounded better than the $1500 Zinky

but the crate was nice too, and it was less than 400 dollars, which was great

so now I'm deciding between the two
suggestions?
