I'd call MC5 proto-punk. I think The MC5 are way to heavy to just be blues rock, and their whole ideals make them punk. But Genres are restrictive eh?
Listening to Franz Ferdinand, who I haven't listened to for ages, and it seems I can totally relate to everything...Crazy.

I'm totally lost in this part of the genre galaxy
I'm listening to some MC5 on youtube, it's pretty cool
not what I expected when you said proto-punk though, especially this cover of Motor city is Burning

I grew up in Metro Detroit and saw the MC5 and the Stooges many times at places like the famous Grande Ballroom and the Eastown Theater. A few times they were on the same bill!! Both bands were absolutly nuts, and the crowds always went wild, rushing the stage, etc. The Rock scene in Detroit was crazy back then - Bob Seger played ay my High School. I saw Alice Cooper at a local ski lodge one winter night.

Exactly.
I've never heard a punk band cover Baby, Please Don't Go as well as they did.
I am not really a fan of 'proto-punk' anyway. By that token, you can call Cream Proto-metal.

Hello ****ers.
I'm kinda starting a band out.
Right now, the drummer wants to do some stoner rock/down tempo kinda stuff, but to me it's just heavy, downtuned blues
We'll see where this goes.

But Bill Bailey is killer, my sister has seen him live a few times. She's a huge fan.
Have you seen Black Books with Dylan Moran? Hilarious.
On musical comedians, Tim Minchin is ****ing brilliant as well.

no I haven't seen it, man I'm watching one of his comedy specials right now though
jesus I love him
and I've got all 5 seasons of QI, and he's on there a fair bit
I really wish I could watch QI here too, but the only way i can watch it is by downloading it :(
that tim minchin guy is pretty good, he's like a comedic Elton John :haha
the only Jeff Dunham skit I find funny is with Walter, I find Ahkmed to be so stereotypical and slightly racist, but supposedly because it's the puppet that is actually saying those things it suddenly becomes okay so say
I don't know, that and his ahkmed jokes are so unoriginal

Best. Party. Ever.
I was SO pissed it's not true though, I can't remember too much. I know I fell off a wall, dragged someone through the garden, groped several girls, probably got rejected 9 time or sommit and got with 3 different girls.
My mate was so sly in inviting people, it was like 2 chicks for every guy there.
I feel like shit now. Something awesome happened though...
For most of the night, the music was just RnB and shizzle but then my mate put on Have Love Will Travel by The Sonics and everyone went mental for it. Everyone ran in and easily the best dance of the night with a very very very hot chick.
Dilemma is that I'm sure I really pissed off this girl I like by going with her at first, then getting smashed and looking to pull anybody... I feel guilty. And I won't see her again till Christmas to talk to her... :(

Got a pic of your beard man? I'm growing a beard for a bet/charity man, it looks funny now but it's getting kinda beard-like. Even if it is still really blonde..
Haven't been posting much lately, I have long periods away from the computer completely lately for some reason.. I suppose it is good not to waste so much time on here anymore.
I am hoping to seriously knuckle down and write some songs, even if they are shit, just to get in the groove a bit and get something new happening instead of the same old crap I always play. It's hard to get motivated with so many distractions all the time, I wish I could just lock myself in a shed in the middle of nowhere for a few months and see if that helps get some songs out..

American politics really doesn't interest me at all to be honest. I'm sick of hearing people talk about it all day at work when it has nothing at all to do with them.
So to change the subject (although still slightly america related..)
I am a fat motherfuccker. 6am I just had a breakfast fry up after being awake all night; 2 sausages, 3 pieces of bacon, 1 small onion, 2 cloves of garlic, 2 large eggs and 1 toasted, buttered white roll.. Washed down with a nice cup of tea.
Managed to set the fire alarm off though in the the process so the landlords and my GF will probably all get up on the wrong side of the bed today.. But it was worth it, soo good.
Got the day off work today, hopefully I can use it productively and do some playing, maybe try and write something resembling a song.
What's everyone else up to today? Apart from voting or talking about US presidents?

I'm still GASsing for a resonator or an archtop acoustic but more so a reso, can't really aford £600 at the moment though, plus will be really hard to get back to Aus, probably have to wait until I get back home before buying one unless I just get a cheapie off eBay and then flog it on before I leave.

Not a lot of quality, low priced resos from what I've seen. I'd kill for a vintage National though.
You could always wrap in foil around an acoustic though.
TheDev01dOne
11-05-2008, 02:48 AM
Lol yeah well apparently the £600 Busker and MM resos are the best resos you can get without going for an original vintage national. Which is pretty good considering a national is about twice that price at least.
Iceman 420
11-05-2008, 02:52 AM
Hm, haven't really heard of Busker or MM. England only brands? Only good resonator I've tried was this ol' Dobro.
TheDev01dOne
11-05-2008, 02:55 AM
In US the brand Republic are pretty much exactly the same, all 3 are built in the same factory.. Some get sent to a USA factory to be setup and distributed as Republic guitars.. Some get sent to a UK factory for setup and become Busker guitars.. And Michael Messers are built in the same factory but are pretty much built to 100% vintage original specs. And setup somewhere different, endorsed by MM of course etc etc.
A strictly resonator playing dude I know swears by his new MM lightning and he owns a few original nationals..

He's pretty cool looking, never heard any of his original stuff, I might check some out after this DVD I'm downloading is finished.
I have just had a bit of a breakhrough in open D fingerpicking, just messing on something I've been practicing for ages (mainly to practice fingerpicking, getting better slowly) and just suddenly the fill licks and stuff I improvised in there fitted and gave a decent unique flavour to it.
Hopefully today once everyone wakes up and I ca make noise I will get some lyrics down and have a song!

The boss at work has said I can organise a "Winter Blues" gig for the end of january if I want.. Am trying to find some decent blues artists near here. I know a great resonator player/duo that do some sweet covers and originals but I would guess the 'civilians' would get bored of too much of that but there doesn't seem to be any decent rockin' blues bands around here apart from one that plays at the pub all the time so it wouldn't be very exciting.
Hope I can get it sorted, sounds fun. I suppose I can't just put myself on Lol

Work in a pub but it's very musical. We don't really put on gigs like normal pubs..
We have a massive beer garden with a big permanent, undercovered stage and a second outside bar built into the old stable.. In summer we have 3 free all day (this year we actually split one into 2 days saturday night acoustic and all day sunday electric) festivals with pro PA/lighting/everything setup, about 10 bands or so, always new local bands and then some bigger more popular ones towards the end to finish things off. Usually about 300 people in the yard at once with more coming and going throughout the day.
And in winter we have 2 marquees that cover nearly all the backyard and so we put them up with a smaller sound and lighting rig, stage etc. and put on some more chilled acoustic bands and stuff, probably about 3 throughout the winter aswell.
Nov 29th we're having a pretty good english/irish folk band play, should be fun but I prefer the 'support' act. Older guy named Watson who is just the coolest guy ever, plays like Bob Dylan-y folk but so so so so sooo well.
EDIT: I forgot every Monday night (Tonight!! Yay!) we have an acoustic session where whoever wants to play some songs can come along and play but it has a VERY high standard, most of the musicians are like 30+ and been doing it forever and done international gigs etc. so once you play 1 verseof a song you pretty much have a whole band behind you and 3part harmonies on the choruses..
It's not snobby or anything but you gotta know how to play, you can't just sit there making noise on a guitar.

hey, so, I got a strange new amp from my friend (the same one i got the Teisco from) at first I thought it was shitty, and then upon trying it out, I realized its the best Solid state amplifier I've ever heard
it's an early 1970's yamaha YTA 15, I don't know anything about it except that it has real spring reverb, and the most natural, tube like distortion I've ever heard come out of a SS amp, it needs a new speaker, the old one is screwed, but I'm seriously considering fixing this old POS up
anyone else have any cool gear finds lately?

Yes I do.
I've always found guitar playing quite obtrusive unless it's soulful and tasteful, for example: SRV to me is brilliant however his live solos often make me turn the song off. It's not that I don't like guitar playing or instrumental music, don't get me wrong but: it's always the words we can relate to, not a huge unison bend with the greatest sustain and tone ever. :)

I was at a train station, and some old black dude who works as a cleaner (He once talked to me about John Lee Hooker on a cold Sunday morning when I waited like 40 minutes for a train  ), was picking up litter as is his job and he stumbled and fell as he bent over. About 6 adults laughed at him, and one middle aged bloke threw his newspaper on the floor about 2 feet away, so the guy had to pick himself up and then go on and do his job again... Not going to say this in the 'RIP' thread, as that's just silly, but this is a chat thread so:
Does no one else think that Jimi Hendrix's band was piss poor? Not Hendrix, but the other two? The bass player was, undoubtedly, just bad, but the drummer never seemed particularly good at keeping time either? He always dragged songs down to this awful tempos as well.
He seems to have garnered a lot of reputation simply for being hendrix's drummer?
meh...
EDIT: I'm no drummer, I couldn't talk technical ability but he just seemed to make an not very pleasant sound, wether it was hard to do or not... look at this video:

Wow that video just made my day. And what's up with the dude hating on Mitchell. He was a part of one of the most respected bands of all time. And yes i can see how you can call him a mess at times but you seem to respect Hendrix, and his playing wasnt exactly picture perfect in terms of technical ability. That style is a part of the whole concerts of the Experience. They pushed boundaries and explored the whole musical piece, never playing it the same twice and didnt care if they ****ed up. If thats not what you like then i will respect your opinion, but saying he got his fame because of Hendrix is unfair. He contributed to the band as well, and i dont know if the Experience would have been as good without him.

meh! if you make all the words negative and then put quotes around it so help me god I will end you. XD
I really wasn't measuring good in terms of technical ability as i pointed out, but did anyone enjoy listening to that? People like drum solos, lol? That video seems to pretty much epitomise what I dont' like about his playing.

I respect Hendrix as an excellent guitar player and an innovator, yeah. I don't particularly like his music. (same reasons, most of it sounds a mess to me).
I don't mean to suggest that Mitch Mitchell is a bad technical drummer, but that's not what i mean when I say i don't like Hendrix's band.
Mitch Mitchell detracts for songs more than he adds, for me. 'lead drumming' wtf is lead drumming? It's horrible is what it is, lol. Whatever technical ability he may have had, the man seems to be the very definition of over-egging the pudding.
And, finally, I'm not sure what he's supposed to have innovated. People say 'fusion drumming' in a ridiculously vague way, but obviously that makes no sense. Except from in a general sense of 'pushing boundries' (again fairly vague) which I'd say was really more Hendrix's game than his.
(Also, im' not 'hating on him'... good on him for doing whatever, I'm simply discussing him. He's garnered a lot of support, in my view, on not very much. I've never had any problem with people like anything they want, but when people rave about him being the best and such and such and important for this and that, I kind of expect some sort of reason, something more specific than 'he was an innovator'. )

You also have to keep in mind it's innovating for DRUMMING. A guitar is far more versatile than a drum. A new innovative way of playing the drums isn't gonna sound as new and far out and different as a new way of playing guitar. Also, Mitch Mitchell played in a way almost like trading fours, his drums almost did a call and response with the other instruments rather than just being a giant metronome.

not that this Mitch Mitchell thing isn't just riveting, if I could trouble someone for an opinion
I'm trying to fashion a new pickguard for my acoustic, as the cheap on e that came on the guitar fell off, leaving a hideous light patch on the guitar
here is a template I made up to cut out of rosewood veneer, and then to burn on the image
I'm not sure about the design just yet

Brae, I think it looks pretty sweet, will it be white though? Black would be much nicer, or tortoise shell!
I'm so into illegal downloading now, it's so incredibly simple to find all the music I can never get to otherwise. I have promised myself that everything that I download I will buy at a later date though. :p:

no, it would be rosewood veneer, to match the bridge and fretboard, that is just a template I made up
I'm quite the pirate myself, I typically buy the things i like, but when i try new things, it's the only way to go, no sense wasting money on something you aren't even sure you'll like
and with my local record shops, I'd be dead and gone before they ever get something i want

I download stuff that I can't find or new stuff but if I really like something then I'll go out of my way to buy it. Especially smaller artists I'll grab their CDs at gigs or whatever, never know when these things are gonna be worth millions later. And they actually benefit frim the $20 or whatever I gave them for a CD, rather than me spending $20 on like a howlin wolf record and all the record companies get the money and his estate ends up with like 50% and he's dead anyway so he doesn't need more money..
I always buy any blues compilation CDs I find, especially the cheap £2 ones you can find in bargain bins etc. They always have the usual good songs but then most have some random obscure recordings or players or whatever.. Found loads of great stuff from compilation CDs, like for example the song 'Blue Light' by The Mighty House Rockers.. Great song and decent old UK blues band, pretty sure they're from near here aswell.

I forgot to mention this yesterday, but in an English GCSE mock, my class and the whole year above us got Rick Rolled. I don't have facebook (anymore), I had it for a few weeks before it got really popular with everyone outside of universitys because some girls told me to get it, and none of my other friends had it so I got rid of it. In all honesty, I half wish I did have it, but I have a problem with going against the grain and wanting to be different(despite it just making my life boring). :haha I do hate social networking though, it seems stupid, and I have a rather addictive personality so would probably be hooked on it like I am with UG.
I should probably swallow my pride, but I've bitched about it too much. I also revere my privacy/secrecy and feel that it's just a chance to be cruel to people. I've seen some people's pages from my year (the kids that get bullied) and it's disgusting, I don't want to be associated with it.
