hi, i'm john from the midlands in UK. i visit the blues and jazz forum reguarly.
i play lead guitar in a local band, i guess we are fairly eclectic playing everything from dylan, stones, a bit of gershwin even, and a few blues standards like 'stormy monday'. we need a name for the band and so far inspiration won't strike. (polite) suggestions welcomed.

Lulz, sneaky bitch.
I have good memories of being in Belgium in the British trenches near Hawthorne Ridge (where the first of the mines went off on the first morning of the Somme Offensive) and standing there freezing my ass off listening to BRMC.
It was actually kinda freaky though, as I stood there looking up the gradual slope, Rifles came on and the first verse goes:
I see the rifles coming over the hill, maybe if you shout they stop and won't kill.

I have just been usy focusing on oher stuff lately I guess. Working a lot more, playing more music, trying to make friends and be a bit more sociable and then trying to spend time with my girlfriend. Doesn't leave much time for internetting, there's usually something more important I could be doing instead.
As far as blues goes though I've been listening to lots of new stuff. Have an update for the Australian blues list I just gotta write it out and post it.
Been practicing a fair bit and learning new techniques and crap, feel like I'm improving a bit and doing some new stuff.
Bought Billy F Gibbons' "Rock n Roll Gearhead" book, that is a cool read, loads of great photos in there.

I have some more "Drummer Wanted" ads posted around the place and I absolutely hate when people reply with like "Hi, Are you still looking for a drummer. I am a drummer. Thanks."
Not saying anything about themselves or music or anything at all.. (Then again, they are drummers..) Then it takes like 6 emails back and forth of me going to great length to try and explain everything about me and what I want from the band etc for them to just stop replying cold and nothing comes of it..
So frustrating. I hope drummers are easier to find when I get back to Aus.

That thread about blues in highschool shouldn't of been closed...if the metalheads kept their noses out it would've been fine...
in the metalheads defense, they were only trying to keep things in perspective, not that I don't wish people at my high school would have been more musically like minded.
that being said, it's a relatively minor thing in all honesty, so what, in my senior year I would have rather listened to John lee Hooker than little John, or Skip james over James hetfield, and my mixed cd's in my car were always made fun of for being old, but really, it made me unique at least in some way.
but I never played guitar at school either, I guess I just left that to the metal guys
and lets face it, nobody ever said life was easy for those that play the blues :p:

I've even met people from higher years who encouraged me with blues. Like this guy who left last year from sixth form used to bring me in mixtapes every month with like Guitar Slim and Sonny Boy Williamson on them.
The last time I cared about what people thought about my music choices was when I was like 10 or something :haha When everyone else like S Club 7 or whatever the **** (if you aren't english, or don't know who they are don't waste your time), and I liked stuff like AC/DC, Zeppelin, The Strokes and The Hives. Get Giant Steps, Smokin the Half Note, For Django, and Round About Midnight. I don't know where to start for Parker or Django, though Django does have a few recordings with Ellington, IIRC. The only Parker recordings I have are the ones he did with Dizzy Gillespie.

It's not a Tele, but I know it uses a Tele pup in the bridge and a P90 in the neck. Combine that with a Dr. Z Carmen Ghia and that is how he gets his...FAT tone.

I have a (probably fairly simple for me coz I rock at English) Romeo and Juliet piece to do, my class has been answering questions related to the piece and doing stuff that we can use in the coursework for around 3 months. Therefore in theory I should have done about... 80 hours of preparation for this. Most of the important stuff is homework, which I didn't do because I hoped he wouldn't collect it... Thinking if he did want it, I'd get it done in one night and bomb the ****ing question. But yeah, I have done very little work on it, and very little preparation.
And then there's the French speaking I have to do. Totally screwed in this. Absolutely no hope. :haha I have to learn my presentation, revise "everything", and then learn/revise general conversation topics/questions/answers...
Then there's Geography coursework as well, and 2 maths papers...

^ Gus, just some advice... I know it's easy to just coast through school sometimes if you feel like you can do well without really trying, but trust me, there will probably come a point where it will catch up with you.

Yeah  I know man, but I'm top sets and to be honest a lot of the work I'm doing, to me is dog piss. So I tend to be pretty lax on it, ya know.
It's caught up with me in the past and I got ****ed by it. I know I'm capable of getting stuff done for sure, but it's a case of interests a lot of the time. I do a lot of sport and that often takes priority for me, and so I focus on that rather than school or it's music, that takes over and I sit there talking about music for a few weeks doing jack **** and scraping homeworks off of people. But yeah, I know it's not a good idea. But I take exception at my school. My class gets worked so hard and compared to the other classes (because we do 5/6/7 GCSE's early) we have a lot of pressure right now, and they still give us work over holidays.

I was exactly the same zemonsta, exactly the same. I spent all my time playing football, athletics, golf, badminton and everything else my school offered and yet, top set everything and breezing it. You can do the same at college too and just about get away with it, but once your at university you'd have got so used to doing so little work that you forget what work is and you have no desire to do it. Although it was a lot more complex that just dropping out, that's I did with uni last March. I knew it at college that I started to go wrong late on in school and it bacame more and more obvious as time went on. And now, despite self-promises of never stopping doing sport and never ever getting out of fitness, guess what happened? Anyway, less of this sob story. I can't tell you what to do or issue advice on it but hey. You're your own man!

My family are big into running. I don't enjoy it particularly but I've always been good at middle distance running. Last time I ran competatively was sometime last year, a school "inter-house competition" I hated it! I got lumped with having to do it for my class because they knew I ran a bit, and had the stamina... My mate agreed to do it with me, and I destroyed him :haha But he had just come back from a broken ankle a few months before. I was like, 14 in the school of those who took part... But thats ONLY because nobody wanted to do it :p: There are loadsa people who could have battered me!

I agree. It's friendlier at least. Anybody interested in getting the blues lyrics thread back up and taking part? I need some form of stimulation.

Tasty.
I'm not sure what the blues lyrics thread is, but i'm up for it :)
On a side note, i think i might have some kind of UG exclusive compulsive disorder, i constantly feel the need to change my sig and avatar, it's quite frustratng, and it usually relates to the particular band i'm listening to at that point, making me look like a fanboy of many different bands.

That Obama group is taking some potentially valid points and making them look silly by being radical about it. I didn't vote for Obama either, if you can't tell. :haha

I know from experience you don't have to be of voting age to have strong opinions about politics. :haha Still, that's a silly group. And I'm conservative.

im conservative too. it just makes me very upset when younger people (kids) with no real life experience take something they hear from the media and bend all around 100 times and then consider themselves enlightened. of course, its def. not just kids that do that, unfortunately.

Not to join in on this political discussion uninvited, but I really really do hate kids who think they can talk about politics cause they heard their Mommy and Daddy mention something. They just regurgitate and then think they are brilliant. No, I'm not old enough to vote, and yeah I have political ideas, but I don't act like I know everything. Cause I don't.

good! thats what i was talking about, people that cant really think for themselves are the problems. i wish more people who were able to vote were capable of thinking like you. to many of our generation are intellectual robots

So many of the voters that voted in the last election were so utterly uninformed that it upsets me to think about it. But yeah, I have absolutely no respect for people who try to talk politics without understanding their views. If you can't actually intelligently defend what you think, and you have your opinions b/c of what you've heard growing up, don't talk to me. :haha
But, I'm ranting. I apologize. :)

The government parties have gotten way out of hand and i think that's the cause of the problem with voters. The scuminess of politicians has translated into voters. People turn it into a competition for their party rather than reasoning and picking which one fits everyone best. It would be nice to see people talk out the pros and cons rather than saying "OBAMA 08 DAWG" or "NOBAMA he's racist". Yes i know those are stereotypes but still its ridiculous. Anyways if i could have voted i wouldn't have bothered voting for either, so i cant really bitch about it.

You're right to an extent. I think that stereotypical stuff is a problem. But I think that's just a side effect of a bigger problem: ignorance of voters. For example, I've talked to far to many people who voted for Obama based on "change" but knew nothing else about his principles or politics. It's the same on the right with certain issues. I can't stand that.

politicians have never not been scummy. you cant blame it on that. democracy is for the people, so the people are responsible to keep it in check, that involves being as well informed as possible.
i will say that the media doesnt help things. its about the story, not the facts.

Well, not all politicians are scummy, but all of the alchoholics, men involved in affairs and the guy who was planning to auction off Obama's senate seat are. The politicians and media caused a divide way back in like the 3rd election when they started gossiping about presidents wives and making government parties. I'm saying it's their fault for making people pick sides. Then the government and media made elections into almost a competition, which makes the opponent your enemy, which in the end causes conflict rather than reasoning. I will agree its the peoples responsibility but we can't get rid of the democrat and republican divide. Even George Washington said we should be careful about government parties.

Indeed, tbh you're probably better off with Obama than with McCain. The man couldn't even run a campaign properly, how is he to run the country?
For the record, I'm not an Obama fan neither. Bit too right wing for me.

lets discuss some new artists who you think have a future!
I have been listening to Luba Mason a lot recently. I saw her on Broadway some time ago and learned she also sings Jazz. She has a Brazilian jazz record with her husband Ruben Blades coming out in January called Krazy Love. You can read more at All About Jazz.

I just recently discovered Indigenous from iTunes, and Nanji Mato is a great guitarist. He really is just an SRV clone just like KWS, but I love the music nonetheless.
