Guys, I wanted to know, would it be ok to use "Funkadelic - Maggot Brain" for the blues duels? The song is slow paced, and the lead guitar is quite bluesy, but I'm not sure it's blues.

Check them out, they're all great players and good showmen.
The bassist is just insane. He played stuff that left my cousin (Who's been playing for like 15-20 years or more, can't quite remember.) just standing their with an open mouth :haha

I got to know them in person too, and they're fantastic guys. Deserve more attention than they get.

Haha! I don't think people here got your Humble Pie joke there. Superb band and I recommend all the albums which Marriott and Frampton were involved in. 'I Wonder' is one one my favourite slow blues tunes of all time. Brilliant band.

Megawant. After 3.5 years playing, I'm still with my Squier. That's what sucks about Argentina. Although living, gas, water, and all that stuff is cheaper than over there, guitars, and technology overall is more expensive. And we earn WAY less. I earn 2 USD per hour (a not bad at all wage for a delivery boy), and an american strat costs around 2000 USD.
I'd have to work 250 days to get a simple American Strat :( .

I've seen 50+ years old bluesmen with Squiers over here. I saw a guy that shreds like Malmsteen with a guitar worse than my Squier. It felt like plastic. And a Zoom 505 :haha.

EDIT: Just checked. A normal MIA strat costs here more than an Eric Johnson signature strat over there .

Really? I never have been amazingly into MIM strats. Played a friend's one and liked my squier better. Though I've been playing for only 1.5 years back then. I could check them out. Do you guys have any recommendation about MIM strats? Something to look about them?

EDIT: Dear god. A second hand MIM Strat costs over here 823 USD. This country has gone crazy. I think that I'm staying with my squier for another year, and going to work and get some nice stuff to USA next summer.

TNfootballfan62
03-12-2009, 10:55 AM
look at a Japanese strat, if you can find them there. They are supposed to be fantastic bang for your buck, at least compared to American strats. :)

That said, I love my MIM, with the few upgrades done to it.

strawforest007
03-12-2009, 11:15 AM
I briefly owned a MIM strat, all gold it was (very garish) made 2003. A solid guitar to be fair to it. Got it for £300 second hand but in really decent nick. All stock hardware and sounded / felt good. Nothing seriously wrong with those guitars, but since I ditched it for my MIA I've not looked back. There is a noticable difference, certainly in feel. I've not checked out a MIJ but I nearly bought one since they get rave reviews, but found my MIA instead. There's plenty of variables with strats that it seems to make every single one different, even if it comes off the line the same day as another in the same factory. Some MIJ's and MIM's can out-do the MIA's, especially with upgrades. With MIA's you're forking out the extra cash mainly for the namesake maybe? Then again I've only played on the one MIA as far as I'm aware it's a good 'un!

MIM Made in Mexico

MIA Made in America - by Mexicans (not that I have anything against Mexican products - I love my MIM 50th Anniversary Golden Strat).

The Fender factory in Mexico is actually only a few miles from the USA one. The necks used in Mexico are made in the US.

Buddy Guy guested at the Allman Brothers show last night. There's a video on youtube of them playing You Don't Love Me, and Buddy's playing was quite frankly, painful.

Kind of a shame. They also had Johnny Winter the other night, and he really isn't himself anymore. It's sad to think of all the great bluesmen who are starting to slip...

yeah, and I don't even mind a lot of qotsa stuff, I was just sort of wiki-ing them and came across Kyuss, I decided to check it out and it kicks a lot of ass

and then it hit me that I've loved stoner rock for a long time, I had listened to a little of it here and there, but when goolz recommended "Orange Goblin" a while back I started trying to find more like it

No problem! It was used loads as well in films etc. Covered by many artists and inspired the inspector gadget theme apparently (got that last bit of trivia off wikipedia, but it's right and despite my hate for that cartoon it's a cool fact). HB and I'm messing about with a POD UX1 so, theoretically, I have a ton of amps to choose from. Maybe that's the problem, maybe if I just cranked my EVJ with a Bad Monkey it'd be easier.

I've got some good stuff out of it - got a cracking Tool sound a few days ago. But this one caused me problems for some reason. It's good fun to mess about with but you can't beat the organic stuff for proper jamming - I love my EVJ.

It's an 8 ohm speaker, right?

So if you're running it with an 8 ohm speaker cab, the total load will be 16 ohms, so you'd have to half the impedence of the output.

Kyle would know the answer better, but I'm pretty sure that's what you do. I have the info laying around somewhere, but am too lazy to dig it up.

In the amp it says:

Parallel speaker jacks - 40 watts - 4 OHM

No.

So it has 2 jacks? One for an extension and one for the actual speaker?

If, when both are operating, and the amp is operating at 4 ohms TOTAL, the load on each jack would be 8 ohms, because it's a parallel circuit.

Also:  Is Corey Harris recording a new album? It'd be awesome if he, Keb Mo and Alvin Younblood did a collaboration :) I just ordered Greens from the Garden the other day ;)

Right, this is starting to make more sense. So I'd plug into a 8 OHM input on a extension cab? If so - we have this matter sorted. :p:

What impedance does your amp run at normally, without the extension jack? 8 ohms? I'm not really sure how to interpret the labeling, but if that's saying that hooking up the extension cab will put it in parallel with your stock speaker, and you need to have 4 ohms total after you've done that, you'd need an 8 ohm extension cab. Like I said, though, I'm not sure exactly how to interpret that. Maybe it's in your manual?

Feedback is actually wanted with that kind of stuff.

I'm planning a rig for that right now.

Basically, there are 4 ways to do that kind of sound. One is to get an old Acoustic (brand name) SS bass amp, turn everything to 10 except for the bass and treble, and then go. You can also get a loud, clean amp, and throw a boost and a fuzz in front of it. Another way is to get a thick british sounding amp, like a Laney AOR, or a Traynor YBA-1, and overdrive it.

My rig plan is a Laney AOR50 and a Sovtek Mig 50, because I like to mix the overdrive with the fuzz.

Octave fuzzes work really well with this kind of stuff, because they tend to be thicker and nastier. Muffs (the metal muff is not a fuzz) fuzzes also do very well.

P90's are the best pu for this application, IMO. PAF style humbuckers also do very well for that sound. Something like an Ibanez AR500 or an SG of some sort would be best, IMO. You could also get something like an Ibanez Jetking, for funziez.

But if you want to run it with your Delta Blues, which you can, just tune whatever guitar you have to drop C, turn the mids to 10, bass and treb to 5, moderate reverb, light break up, loud as you can get it, and hit it with a fuzz. That'll get you 90% of the way there.

The main point is to play it obscenely loud.

yeah, I'd want to do it as budget as possible, I can handle feedback, it's bloody hum I can't stand, the P90's or PAFs would cut that down a lot though, I already hardly use my big muff, I fecking love that pedal with a fiery passion, but my cheap strat is just way to poorly insulated

I want to buy a guitar, I'm just so paranoid of bad quality, I want the best bang for my buck in a guitar you know, what is a reasonably priced and very well put together guitar with p90's/HB's?

if I did start this **** up though, I've actually been trying C standard lately, and I love that tuning, I don't fair well in dropped top string stuff though, I find it quite limiting as far as what I play.

one thing I'd love to try to get that crazy bassy fuzz tone is try something like a micro pog on the sub octave + dry setting and pair that with some heavy fuzz, I get a feeling that tone would be absolutely sick for that type of music

the obscenely loud part I can already handle, my DB is skull implodingly loud with the master volume dimed and my Big muff on top of that :haha

15's go great with stoner metal.

You still have the Octavia? That's also a great stoner fuzz.

There are a bunch of great guitars that would work. Like I said, an Ibanez AR500 is a great fit, as is an Epi SG (I love the G400 Custom.) Edwards is also another thing to look at. Basically any classic rock type guitar, really. A les paul or SG copy would be the best, IMO. I use my Ibanez Artcore, and it handles it like a champ.

C standard is actually what I use the most. That and C#(for playing teh Black Sabbath).

EDIT: It's really easy to switch between the mid-high heavy Black Sabbath type sound and the Acid King/Weedeater bass heavy fuzz sound just by moving from bridge to neck and rolling down the tone knob.

EDIT2: Also, when I say loud, I mean louder than loud. I know the DB is loud as it is, but I dimed my V33 (Same tube compliment) through my 2x12 with Celestions, and it wasn't loud enough, really. Don't underestimate the loudness factor. That's half the point ;)

yup I still have my octavio, I use it a fair bit when I'm in a wanking mood :p:

cool, I've always been wary of epiphones though, I wasn't sure if they lived up to their name, though I have heard the epi SGs are far better than the les pauls

I think if I do get one I'll just throw some 14s or 15s as you said and have that as my dedicated C standard guitar

Sounds about right.

I run my muff into the BC, and my Belcat R-Fuzz into my V33H, both with a bit of breakup, boosted.

Muff settings with everything at 1:00.

It balances out because the BC30 is fairly bright and the V33 is fairly dark.

cool, maybe I'll try again later but with the mid boost switch on just to give the whole thing a shot it the arm, I'd do it now but my roommate would probably kill me :haha

and I'm so very jealous of your dual amp setup

I always hope I can open their minds to the world outside of John Mayer a little bit. It usually fails, but there's always the hope that I've planted that seed. :haha

I enjoy making people look like idiots based on their own statements :haha

I guess it doesn't help that I think 99% of all people I meet are idiots.

I love making people look like idiots with their own statements. The problem is, they are usually such idiots, they don't realize that they've looked like idiots. So it's kind of anti-climactic.

ok goolz, I made a new clip, the playing is a lot sloppier this time around but I think I have some decent tone going, I turned teh bass up slightly then threw my Bd-2 in front of my Pi to drive it and turned the mid boost on, the hiss and buzz from my strat is pretty intense with that much gain but it's a general idea nonetheless

if you hear some guitar playing very quietly at the beginning it's because my roomy is playing to fleetwood mac in the next room :haha
