Get the BJ, it kicks ass, great cleans and a really grody dirty sound
Incidentally, does anyone else use the word grody as an adjective? I find it so descriptive and onomatopoetic.

Grody reminds me of valley-girl talk and bad 90s chick movies like Clueless that my sisters used to watch daily.
Today I shall record a blues song.. It is my goal for the day. I dunno what song yet, but hopefully it turns out good. Might even just use some basic structure and write my own. I'd like to write an insomniac blues since I've been up all night but there'll never be any better than 'Too Tired' by Gary Moore and Albert Collins.. Maybe I'll do it anyway.

Or..
The Climax Blues Band.. any album I guess, just got them tonight myself. I seen them on the weekend and never realised they were so well established, I just thought it was some old guys jamming blues! Great though.

The only thing is that people might confuse you for an ethnic band

oh I know that, it's just that the crate, had a slightly less nice clean tone, and could do full blown distortion as well, along with having separate gain/volume knobs and it was cheaper
so my question is that is the less versatile but slightly better sounding and more expensive BJ worth it over the crate?
I should add the Crate is a 2x12 with alnico blue speakers as well, whereas the BJ is a 1x12

Theres a guy named Adam gussow who does blues harp videos on youtube that are awesome and he really knows his stuff. It really helped me, heres the first one, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRWZ1mO-vnI . He also wrote a book called mister satan's apprentice about his experiences playing the blues in harlem. I'd recommend this book to any blues guy, I really liked it, and it's better than reading the dozenth biography about BB or Hendrix.

Actual liscense, I still need like 20 more behind the wheel hours though, so its gonna take me at least another month.
But about the pickups, it has been confirmed by an old guitar teacher that I had that my amp sucks at high volumes cause the tubes suck. So I think I'm gonna replace the tubes insted of get the pickups. But I MIGHT be able to get enough money from my relatives to do both, we'll see.

I only figured it out properly today.. You need to do a good solid, single note draw.. The 4 or 5 holes bend really easy.. So draw in with medium force and then drop your jaw down low... Then use the very back of your tongue to kinda open and close your throat.. I find pushing the harp hard into my lips helps.. And when you move your tonge around (The back of it, not the front) it changes the airflow somehow to make the note bend.
It just takes practice man, just do it over and over until you get it to sound right, Its like riding a bike or singing and playing guitar at the same time.. Takes ages at first, but once it finally clicks you can do it easily.
AetherSpear - I've been looking for his book but can't find it anywhere. I really want it now he seems like a really cool and smart guy. When he starts rambling about the blues and stuff he reminds me LOADS of John Mayer when he gets on some rambling story about music. I love listening to fellow music nerds talk :haha

If you watch the 17th video (im pretty sure its 17) of that Gussow thing he shows you how to adjust the reeds to make it play better.
The hardest thing I find is doing a bent note only.. I can't just play it bent I have to play it natural and bend it down, suppose it's just more practice.

haha, thats strange. If you had hendrix on your show, would you really consign him to miming??? At least when people do mime, they make it look realistic. There´s no mic, no amps, the guitars aren´t plugged in, and the camera never gets close to him!
The end of the solo is awesome. the sound suggests that he should be saying "ohhhh, come on baby, whoa", but the camera is up to his face and he´s saying nothing!!
A low/easy money part of the great man´s life...

You want a decent dynamic mic for micing amps. Shure SM57 is the standard that everyone uses.. But there are other good 'clones' of the SM57 that do pretty well. I know there is a company on Thomann.de that sells Shure SM58s (vocal mics, not instrument mics) that are rebranded, made in the same factory and ****, just a different brand name.. aybe they make SM57s aswell so I'll try find it and see if they do.
I don't really know alot about mics but Behringer, although they make ****ty amps, are pretty good vlue for money with stuff like PA gear and microphones etc. so maybe check them out?
EDIT: Here it is here .. http://www.thomann.de/gb/the_tbone_mb75.htm .. Called a T Bone MB75.. They're supposed to be exact clones of Shure SM57s for like 1/4 of the price. We have an SM58 of them and A/B tested it with a real Shure and it sounded exactly the same. Maybe check around and see if you can find them in USA.

So the thing to look for is a Dynamic mic? Ok I can find one of those then...
And I searched for that tbone mic, but all I got were european sites.

Ah that sucks, they're really good. But yes you definitely want a dynamic mic, actually for everything in a live band (except maybe orchestras, wind instrument stuff) you use dynamic mics. They are less sensetive , and more focused directionally so that ambient noise/crowd noise can't get into the mic and so that when you are close-micing your guitar cab with your tube amp on 10, the microphone doesn't distort and just sound like crap.
Studio stuff is different sometimes you mic guitar amps with both a dynamic and condenser mic and mix the 2 signals but still generally speaking you can get away fine just using a dynamic and probably lots of people do just use dynamic mics for everything.
Pretty much any dynamic mic will work, just obviously the better it is the better it will sound but I think with microphones the increases in price and increases in sound quality are not neccesarily equal.. Meaning just because one mic is 10x more expensive, it won't neccesarily sound 10x better.. Technology and cheaper manufacturing costs are pretty advanced these days, even with a cheaper mic it will still sound good enough.
All that said it depends what you're doing with it to justify the price differences.. If you're recording for a pro album you want the 100% best sound possible, so it is worth getting a Shure SM57 for whatever ridiculous amount of money they cost.. If you just want it for micing your amp at gigs or home recording projects then you don't neccesarily need something so expensive, just a decent mid-range mic will do the job perfectly.
I tend to ramble don't I? Sorry..
I kinda learned to play Stormy Monday on Harmonica today. Only simple melody and chordy stuff, no fancy improv solos there yet but I'm working on it Lol I might do a quick recording of it tomorrow, it's a fun song to play. The dog has stopped howling when I play though! That is a bad bad thing, I wanna do howling dog bluesss :(

I played football (soccer) for 3 hours on about 2 hours full sleep...God am I tired. I went to my friends house and played football in a park for about 2 hours with some chavs until we got into an argument and left, then we went to Sainsburys and as we came out saw some other chavs waiting for us, so we decided to walk along the river (at 7 pm) thinking we could either run from them or they wouldn't realise.
So off we went, walking along the Thames in the dark with no street lights. And some drunks offer us some acid and strongbow. We said no and then one of them fell in a bush :p: . We carried on walking...just.
Then we realised the other chavs had followed us and were running after us so I yelled "Run you fuck ing ****s!" to which they didn't...
So I was about 100 meters from them and another of my friends was about 5 meters from them. I ran about 20 meters past the turn off to my friends house and had to leg it back there, then I ran an extra 30 meters going down the wrong alley  ... and we finally got back to his house!
The next morning, we found that the half a mile or whatever we walked/ran from the chavs would have been 20 yards, had we just walked past them in the first place! :p:
Hind sight, I love it.
We then had inter-house football on 2 hours sleep and had to get up at 7:45... We were not good.

Hmmm, well, I don't think many, or any, of the new (depending if he bought new) ones seem to have the 6 in-line headstock. Or maybe I'm just not looking around enough.

Eric, that's total blues lyrics right there :p: Very clever.
These are some of my favourites from 'How Blue Can You Get?'
My love is like a fire
Your love is like a cigarette
My love is like a fire
But baby yours is like a cigarette
I watch you step down on it baby and crush it
Tell me how, tell me how, how blue can you get
I gave you a brand new Ford
and you just said I want a Cadillac
I bought you a ten dollar dinner
You said Thanks for the snack
I let you live in my penthouse
You said it was just a shack
I gave you seven children
and now you wanna give 'em back

So im back from barcelona, with stories to tell...
On the plane
So on the way there, i was sitting next to this young couple. Just as the plane's about to take-off, the girl says "oh wait, ive got nothing to suck", so the guy replies with "i've got something that you can suck right here baby", and points at his crotch. I looked at him with confusion/intrigue because he was a fat, greasy, spotty nerdy teenager, and i thought "there is no way that you could pull that off, mate!!" That made me giggle for an hour or so...
Barcelona

Its such a beautiful city, and if you have a chance to go, take it! Ill tell you about all the best places to go! So ive done the whole tourist thing, so i just did the normal things: shopping, eating out etc. On Sunday, we went to an all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant. Now, once i pay for something, i want to get my money's worth, and as the food keeps coming, i kept eating.... Anyway, an hour after starting, i realised that i ate far too much, and raw fish isn't the best thing to get full on!
http://i30.tinypic.com/2djdrf6.jpg
We went to the cinema afterwards to see Vantage Point, which is an awesome film by the way, but i have one query for those that have seen it. (SPOILER ALERT) at the end of the film, the newsreader says that one of the terrorists was arrested. Who was it??? the Morrocan guy, the guy looking for his brother, the woman, or the Spanish policeman?? Me and Raquel weren't sure, but her brother told us earlier that he was going to go see it before us, so we went home and asked him......... but he had decided to watch the Carmen Electra film instead... Teenage boys, don't you just love them??!
So anyway, later on, me and the missus are talking, and i try to be romantic:
Neil: I love you more than you could ever imagine.... but you should spend your life finding out how much
Raquel: jeez, do you want some wine with that cheese!
Neil: Yeah, that was bad. I'm not very good at the romantic talk at the moment. Maybe i should stop writing that romantic film that i've been working on.
at which point i burst out in hysterical laughter for 10 minutes, until i had laughed so hard that i gagged, i had to put my head over the toilet in fear of seeing the sushi again.. But its strange, because reading it back, its not funny, raquel didn't laugh, and im not actually working on a romantic film script!
All in all, i had a great time, but i have to study now.....
Well, i say study, but let's face it, ill procrastinate for 10 days, and then panic because i have 4 essays to write in 4 days!

Angus is overrated, Malcolm Young wrote all the classic riffs and stuff, he let Angus choose whether he wanted to be lead or rhythm guitarist, Malcolm was actually a way better guitarist supposedly.. Angus had great stage presence though, you can't deny that.

*sigh*
Blues has been kinda boring for me recently, I've been on a huge alternative kick the past few weeks listening wise. Radiohead has seriously been on repeat for like 3 days straight.
I played in a jam session last night and it was fun to play some jazzier blues things. I think I'm just getting more advanced with my listening so I'm starting to appreciate some things a little more complex. Who knows... A good blues solo still tickles my heart though
theneildeal
03-20-2008, 10:33 PM
every time that i got bored with a genre, i always moved on to jazz. Its a genre that's so diverse and it's the perfect genre to appreciate more complex music.
But with some bands, they were played non stop for ages, so i just got bored of them. At the moment, i can't listen to Guns N Roses, Led Zep, John Mayer, and RHCP just because i listened to them too much.
Its strange at the moment though. Everytime i listen to some music, if i can't imagine myself playing it on solo guitar, i won't listen to it. For example, i won't listen to simple acoustic/alternative because it doesn't have the wow factor. Metal bores me, but artists like SRV, Clapton etc are the people that i listen to most, because i can imagine playing them, and the audience looking at me in awe! ha, i don't know, maybe its just my thing, but its just a phase that im going through at the moment!

I try to keep my listening as diverse as possible to keep myself from burning out my passion for something.. Even withing JUST blues though there's so many different sounds to listen to I can listen to just that without ever getting bored.. Acoustic blues, harp blues, delta blues, blues/rock, "nu-blues", shredder type guitarist blues, slide guitar blues, chicago blues, texas blues, jazzier blues, piano blues.. I have so much blues, it's awesome.
Been listening to Rory Gallagher loads today, Cradle Rock is such an awesome riff.

Funny, I've been the exact opposite lately. I've discovered, at least for live music, that I think the spotlight shouldn't be on one player, but the whole band instead, the whole sound. I appreciate technical playing of course, but I find it much more fun to just listen to people having a good time playing music, it doesn't matter how technical it is. As long as the audience is having fun, then so am I ;)

I really don't care what I listen too. I've been in a really slow rock and country theme lately. I have no idea why, I just really like the slow stuff. I've got so much music though, so I don't usually get bored of one certain genre. :) I've also started getting into BLS again. (I used to be obsessed with their slower stuff) It's probably because summer is coming again and that is what I listened to all last summer :p:

Neither do I, I just listen to different things in different moods and different states of mind.
I like dirtier tones...A bit of grit, nothing over the top, just a tube amp starting to break up.
But I'd much rather hear the sweet voice of Blind Willie McTell and the haunting slide playing of Blind Willie Johnson before I'd hear an electric guitar. :p:

I've never really heard the term Swamp Blues used a lot, only a few times. Yeah, it's pretty awesome I guess. I like the sound of a slide more than the sound of fingers.

I really like his soundtrack stuff, like the soundtrack to 'Last Man Standing' with Bruce Willis has loads of awesome acoustic country/slide/blues on there. Killer movie too.
I'm getting more into slide now, getting the hang of it a bit better. I find it hard to get an original sounding groove though, it's like everything has been done already and I just lapse into Death Letter or Rollin & Tumblin.

But I would compare Black Flag to a more contemporary blues artist, just waaaay faster. That and The Ramones played a I IV V progression ALL the time.
And Swamp blues is a genre, like CCR type stuff, and also Lightnin Slim and Slim Harpo.
I personally like real gritty dirty blues over cleaner stuff. Like I would rather listen Howlin Wolf than BB. The more grit and nastiness, the better to me.

So....
my night you ask, it was alright until:
I was accidentally ditched because my friends left to the bar when I was in the shower
so I was left in my apartment with my friend, her new boyfriend and one of my best friends, and we were talking and somehow the conversation shifted to a problem one of them was having, and so that other best friend and I had a sort of informal intervention about it, and she pretty much went insane.
and my best friend in the entire world, the guy i was supposed to be drinking with this whole time, the guy I would swallow the fires of hell for is in the hospital with alcohol poisoning because my other friend who was supposed to be with him and keeping a eye on everyone just let it happen, and when he gets home he says; "don't worry he'll be alright and we are going to the hospital really early tomorrow", and then, the dip**** has the ****ing brains to chug a half a 26er of Crown before passing out, so now, I'm trying to sober up well enough to drive us to the ****ing emergency room tomorrow morning to pick up the guy he should have been watching out for, I mean jesus, how hard is it to see someone is so drunk they can't function?
Fuck!
oh and I was so pissed, I wrote a fucking song about it
and that helped a little, but I still want to kill a few babies to quell my rage.
*big exhale*
well, now, that made me feel a little better

and my best friend in the entire world, the guy i was supposed to be drinking with this whole time, the guy I would swallow the fires of hell for is in the hospital with alcohol poisoning because my other friend who was supposed to be with him and keeping a eye on everyone just let it happen, and when he gets home he says; "don't worry he'll be alright and we are going to the hospital really early tomorrow", and then, the dip**** has the ****ing brains to chug a half a 26er of Crown before passing out, so now, I'm trying to sober up well enough to drive us to the ****ing emergency room tomorrow morning to pick up the guy he should have been watching out for, I mean jesus, how hard is it to see someone is so drunk they can't function?
Fuck!
oh and I was so pissed, I wrote a fucking song about it
and that helped a little, but I still want to kill a few babies to quell my rage.
*big exhale*
well, now, that made me feel a little better
Write a song.

It is the end of finals week and the beginning of spring break, so I should be happy. However, I failed calculus for the second time and I am depressed about it. That and I am back home in Sacramento, and my brother, who also plays guitar is pissing me off. He owns an Epi special 2 and a marshall MG and tries to talk to me about electric guitars, implying that he knows more than me. Sure, he has been playing 2 months longer than I have, and he is better technically, but he is damn boring to listen to. We played some blues today and he was all over the place playing as fast as he could through some runs and going off beat and it was pissing me off. That and I am hella tired.
/rant.
srsly record that song. songs that are written in a heightened state of emotional consciousness are always the best.

Yeah I got pissed of so I started playing Raining blood because he wouldn't switch from lead to rhythm when I wanted to take a solo. And he had been soloing for a full 36 bars. :bonk:

Me either yo', life is good. Which sucks when you just feel like playing blues.
Do you guys think Hey Joe is blues? It has blues themes and **** I guess but I'm not sure if I consider it blues or rock. Gonna try record it this week.

I'd say it's blues
Anyways.
I went to my music shop, had a look around fiddled around on some strat and stuff, then thought, I'll have a look at the acoustics!
So off I went, it's just up some a half flight of stairs and it's all kinda open so theres no doorways or corridors or w/e. So you can pretty much hear everything in the shop. Anyhow, I went up an looked around and found such a gorgeous resonator. I had to play it. :p:
I picked it up and was astounded by how heavy it was, it was all metal. And Ive only played wooden Dobro's before. It sounded sooooo sweet. Four people came up to talk to me and were like " Wow I love it when kids play the blues!" , "You got the Son House slap kinda thing goin on there, great playing." etc etc. It was pretty cool, and when I finished I got applause from the staff :haha
Then they gave me a discount on a slide, a patch lead and some new strings! Then they offered me the resonator down from £450 to £360. But my family is broke right now. My dad was pretty surprised by all the generosity. I think my dad was seriously tempted to buy it for me though!
I'm really happy now. :)

Nice work man. It's moments like that that really keep me going on playing, when just random people tell you you're good. I guess that's what being a musician is all about really, making other people enjoy your music.
You should so convince your dad to buy you a resonator! My GF's dad has a resonator mandolin, it's so awesome.. sounds like mandolin being played through a really old fashioned radio.

Erhh, my parents are having to pay University stuff for my brother, and sister, something for our drains which are causing rising damp, and we have to pay off the rising damp thing we had done twice and hasn't worked because of the drains which weren't considered the first time... blah blah blah, we are broke. :p: Never gonna happen.
MONSTA EDIT: I think i'll probably get a resonator for my birthday, in August. It's a while granted, but I can't do much about it. :p:

Could work...but I wouldn't want to wreck my guitar when I can get a nice resonator eventually.

Actually, **** my local music shop; I could get the same thing off the net for £319. :haha

I think it could work, just make a piece of wood the right length.. draw some line roughly for the frets.. glue it on to a metal tin somehow.. Add a piece of wood for the bridge and some make shift tiuners! Doesn't need to be a proper neck if it's just gonna be for slide Lol
I might have to take on this challenge!

If Bo Diddley can play a cigar box..
They actually use oil-can guitars in Africa, I remember seeing loads on eBay once. I think it could be done pretty easy, just attaching the neck securely would be the hardest part. I shall research..
EDIT: I'm seriously going to attempt this now, gonna cost like £50, maybe less. I just need an oil can to use. Watching some on eBay now Lol Gonna make it a 5 string for open G .. This could be the greatest project ever undertaken on UG..
