British weather is as strange as ever, it's sunshine in the morning, followed by light cloud, followed by heavy rain for 40 minutes, followed by blistering sunshine. :p: Oh the joys of a british summer! Hopefully I'll come into some money; after I get the results for the GCSEs I took early next week, but I'm not sure I particularly want my results... To be quite honest, I never sit down and learn songs...
I just listen to a lot of blues, and a lot of different players, and when I pick up the guitar it just comes out... I guess I just hear the licks enough untill it sort of feels natural, and then I play them, using the blues scale...
Am I alone in this? :o
The last thing I actually sat down to learn was some licks in this live cut, because they were driving me nuts...

Yeah I do similar stuff kinda. I tend to go through phases of listening to a lot of the same guy in order to soak up his style, lately it's been the soloing style of T-Bone and the Chicago Blues rhythm used in muddy waters/little walters songs.. so many cool little things in their rhythm playing to learn man.

Hi guys,
Bought myself a new guitar at the weekend. I say new, it's an oldie. I've wanted one for years and suddenly decided to just get one (Hofner Verithin 1963/64):
http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq84/strawforest007/hofner/montage.gif
If anyone wants more info then just ask. It's being registered on a couple of Hofner verithin websites too.
An absolute joy to play on. Works perfectly too. I'll probably get an mp3 up of it playing as soon as I can...

Is that Hofner full or semi hollow? It's a beauty.
strawforest007
08-26-2009, 02:18 PM
It's totally hollow, there's no solid block in these models so there's not much sustain but that's what I wanted. The old open gear tuners aren't the best but it stays in tune pretty well unless I do a few too many bends or overdo it with the Bigsby. For me it's the perfect rhythm guitar.

Guys..
If I tune my guitar relative to the recording of Hear My Train Comin' (the acoustic version) it ends up extremely flat, about 3 and a half semitones down from E, and it rattles my guitar like hell to try and play it even with these heavy gauge strings.
Anyone know how I can up the pitch of the recording but keep the tempo the same?

That sounds great. I once went to the birthday of a 40 something years old blues bassist. There were many people, and we all had pizza for many hours and then all his musician friends started jamming. It was amazing. I joined too, but only after almost everyone left since I didn't really know the bassist and I wasn't very confident.

Just as a low-key shout-out, any of you guys think it's worth reviving the unfinished UG Blues album (2), or creating a new project for one? The thread for the old one is still there but theneildeal (the album creator) hasn't posted for nearly a year, so I think it can be classified as dead. I've tried PM'ing him too but no reply. Hey, it's good to see that some of the regulars from my time are still here. But unfortunately, i won't be back for good. I've just popped in to say Hi. I left a year ago so that i could concentrate on my final year of uni, and it worked a treat. I now have a first class honours degree in international and financial economics. I'm just about to start a masters in financial economics, and i want to really concentrate on that. Straw, i won't be able to continue with the blues album, but please feel free to take it on. I don't have to the time to do it, so it would be great if you could. I had a virus on my computer, so i don't have any of the songs left, so i'm sure that you could get people to send you the songs.

Tried out a Seymour Duncan Tweak Fuzz today at a shop in Belfast. Seriously considering it, some really good tones outta that thing. Pretty reasonable price too - £90. Also tried a Toadworks Mad Dog Fuzz which was cool but there's no tone control so it's not as versatile. It was going for £60.

Saw Bonamassa this summer, all the way in the front.
He was good, but I must say I prefer him the way he was about 6 years ago.
He's become a lot less of a blues guitarist, and more of a "virtuoso" in the same sense as Satriani etc. (A lot more tasteful, ofc. But, you get the point I'm trying to make)

I kind of agree, it seems like he' s afraid to cut loose, he says he's matured as a musician, I say he's sort of lost the fire :( if he made albums as good as he plays live shows, I'd be a lot happier with him as a musician
he's still one of my favorite guitar players though, but Steffen Schackinger has recently climbed above him.

Well, that's good. I guess....
From what I can see (Following various medias and reading the Political Party section of Harmony Central.) It's mainly a matter of Republicans struggling with tooth and nail to fight back against anything Obama tries, because it's "Socialist".
Considering how a lot of them have nothing against medicare, it becomes quite an ironic thing, seeing them yell against it, presenting Obama as hitler, it's just. Bizzarre, and a clear result of entertainment and information being dangerously mixed.

^That's a bit of an exaggeration, I think.
Republicans understand that health care needs reform, but think that attempting to socialize it, or even introducing a public option, are bad solutions--and they have some great points. The current bill is incredibly costly, and it's something most fiscal conservatives don't think we should try to pay for with higher taxes, especially considering the economic atmosphere. Not to mention the freedoms it could potentially take away from the physician and the patient.
This public option idea was tried in my home state, Tennessee. We called it TennCare, and it failed miserably. It became too costly to sustain, and it's been nearly done away with at this point.
And on the point of failed policy, you brought up medicare. I'm not sure you can find a conservative who has nothing against medicare. Medicare is a failing system. Medicare and Social Security in general are going bankrupt, and are putting America in a very tough place. Anyone who has the least bit of sense can see that these are failing institutions, and certainly not ideas to base further health care reform off of.
Republicans suggest some free market solutions, such as making interstate health insurance available (health care is currently available on state-by-state basis) to open up more competition and drive down prices, among other things.

Personally, I lack faith in any government composed of a few individuals to make decisions for me (and, in turn, every other individual) when I'm fully capable of making decisions for myself. Here's a quote that touches on that:
"From time to time we've been tempted to believe that society has become too complex to be managed by self-rule, that government by an elite group is superior to government for, by, and of the people. Well, if no one among us is capable of governing himself, then who among us has the capacity to govern someone else?" - Ronald Reagan

If you don't have faith in governments composed of elected officials, what alternative would you have faith in? Self-governance? Anarchy? Communism? Genuinely interested on where you stand...
Also, it's ironic that you cite a quote from a democratically elected official to explain your lack of faith in democratically elected officials.
Elected officials don't make every waking decision for you, and the decisions they do make for you are supposed to be made in your best interest, or in the best interests of the majority/consensus. Now if you want to argue the difference between what's 'supposed to happen' and what 'really happens', then be my guest, I'll be the first to say democracy is a flawed system; but it's the lesser evil IMO.
I mean, how do you propose things like the economy, health care, welfare systems, foreign policy, tourism, and other things that are bigger than any individual (note, things that concern a large number of people with MUTUAL INTERESTS) are handled if not by elected representatives? Sure, the world is made up of individuals, and we all should have individual rights and liberties that should be guaranteed, but individuals also live together in societies which need some form of governance in order to balance the needs/wants/opinions/actions of individuals for the greater good of the society as a whole.

Forreal.
I'm still holding out for the pro-legalization of narcotics, pro-let whomever marry or shag whom or whatever the eff they want, limited government with strong regulations, pro-gun rights, hardcore pro-science, emphatic and proud nonbeliever candidate/party. No, don't think I support Anarchy. :haha
Democracy is a great system, IMO. I think America's Constitution set up a fantastic system of government. One in which the roles of the federal government are clearly laid out. One of the most important roles is to protect individual freedom. You know, freedom to make my own decisions about what to do with my money, where to get my healthcare, etc, etc. ;)
Elected officials don't make every waking decision for me, but it seems to be the trend of the government to interfere more and more into the individual's life.
I think the economy, health care, and things like that are best sorted out in the private sector. I'm a big fan of free markets. Welfare? Welfare is the same way. I think private charity is the best way to handle welfare. I'd rather see private charity handle welfare than the government take from people who earn money to give it to people that don't. That's obviously going to be something that most people disagree with me on, but that's my answer to that.
Foreign policy fits into protecting rights. That's one of the roles of federal government--to protect the nation from foreign threats.
I'd love to keep this conversation going, but these things turn ugly. ;)

On paper America's constitution looks pretty awesome, it's just putting it into practice that's the issue >.<. Protection of individual freedoms are important sure, but there's always a limit to these things. Eg. if one persons freedoms encroach on others freedoms, or break laws of the states/federal govt. What if yours and others decision to keep privatized health care means that lower income groups are disadvantaged when it comes to health care, and because of this have a lower life expectancy? I'm just sayin', it's easy to want privatized healthcare if you and your family are rich and white. It's easy to not worry about benefits and welfare if your families rich and white.

To me, making a health care system (something which should be a given to all tax payers in any modern democratic society) privatized puts peoples lives and well being at the mercy of the inequalities created by capitalism.. lives and well being aren't something which should be left to the free market. Private charity cannot handle welfare, it would never get enough revenue/donations to provide a sufficient safety net to reduce poverty/unemployment/inequality.
I'd love to keep this conversation going, but these things turn ugly. ;)
I don't get why people are so anti-political discussions. Some people are capable of having discussions without turning them into arguments/personal flame wars. And that whole anarchist/communist thing was in jest obviously ;P
Rather than saying flat out that government intervention is bad or good, why not look at what the type of intervention is, weigh up the effects that it will have, and then decide whether those effects are bad or good?
Saying you want welfare in the free markets is essentially saying you don't want it at all, because there's no way to make a profit from it. Most things which are essential and not profitable in money terms are usually handled by the federal/state govt. In my mind Welfare is a way to even out the inequalities in standard of living and income that are created by the free market.

One person's freedoms encroaching on another's is handled by there being a crime system. If you do something like steal from a person, you're encroaching on their freedom, so you're punished for it.
In America, no one is restricted from health care. If you need it, you go to the emergency room, and they must treat you whether you have insurance or not. So it's not like we lock the poor out of hospitals and refuse to treat them. Health insurance is costly, sure, but that's something that can be fixed. If health care can be made more affordable by freeing up the market, it can be made more available to more people. I think this is a better alternative than moving in the other direction--one where we overtax the wealthy to provide for the poor, and lock in what doctors can earn for their services. In my opinion, this infringes on the rights of the rich to their property. It does not infringe on the rights of the poor to work hard and obtain the property necessary to get the same health care. We all have equal opportunity in America, not equal reward. It also hurts quality of health care, based on the idea of rational self interest--many doctors won't be doctors if the reward they expect for their labor isn't there.
And if you're assuming I'm rich, you're wrong. I've been very poor before, and my family worked hard, and moved into the middle class. Right now, I'm a struggling college student. If you're assuming I'm white, you're right, but I fail to see what bearing race has on this discussion.

It's hard to argue that private charity can truly thrive in a free market, although it does in many instances. And while I don't know exactly what to do about welfare, my biggest problem with it is that it provides for the lazy as much as it does for the needy. I am for helping those in need. I'm not for helping those who won't work. At the end of the day, I truly believe you can be successful in America with hard work. And like I alluded to before, we do still give health care to everyone in America. You can go into an emergency room and receive care no matter who you are, or how much money you have.

No one's restricted, but you sure think twice about going to the doctors if it's going to put you heavily in debt. Scaring people away from health services with huge bills isn't conducive to creating a healthy, working population. And come on man, you really believe that everyone in America has equal opportunity? Who's a law firm going to hire, a man with a criminal record due to growing up in a ****ty crime filled neighbourhood (much higher rate of committing) or a man with a clean slate who went to Harvard paid for by his parents. Seriously.. in reality, some are more equal than others ;). Don't get me wrong, working towards equality should be encouraged, but people aren't created equal. Socio-economic/psychological effects of upbringing, where you grow up, what race you are, what gender you are, the wealth of your family etc all dictate the opportunities you will have in your life time.
And if you're assuming I'm rich, you're wrong. I've been very poor before, and my family worked hard, and moved into the middle class. Right now, I'm a struggling college student. If you're assuming I'm white, you're right, but I fail to see what bearing race has on this discussion.
No one is rich at the age of 19/20 (bar freak occurrences). I wasn't calling you rich, I'm more making the assumption that you haven't had to worry too much about whether there will be food on your plate, or that your parents and you are reasonably comfortable with the necessities to live above the poverty line.
While I don't know exactly what to do about welfare, my biggest problem with it is that it provides for the lazy as much as it does for the needy. I am for helping those in need. I'm not for helping those who won't work. At the end of the day, I truly believe you can be successful in America with hard work. And like I alluded to before, we do still give health care to everyone in America. You can go into an emergency room and receive care no matter who you are, or how much money you have.
True, there will always be incentive to try and scam your way into a welfare benefit, but this can be minimized pretty easily by setting up procedures and requirements for eligibility to welfare programs.
I tend to disagree with the idea that anyone "can be successful in America with hard work" for several reasons. The constitution guarantees the right to the pursuit of happyness, key word, "pursuit". As good as this sounds, there's a reason the word 'pursuit' was added. Not everyone can be successful, and not everyone is equal in America. Some people are born into wealth and have trust funds, lives laid out for them before they're even born.. others are accidents born into broken homes with single parents and grow up below the poverty line. These things matter. As good as it sounds to say "we are all born equal" and all that fun stuff, it just isn't true. Privatizing health care is obviously going to hurt the poor more than it will the rich, they end up paying more, as a percentage of their income, to stay healthy and alive. Sure, rich people pay a higher tax % on their income, but really, whats more important, improving the well being of the nation by reducing unemployment, % of people living below the poverty line, and reducing crime through tackling socio-economic problems (direct link between these and crime statistics), or the rich guys new LCD screen or BMW?
Personally I'm not a huge fan of governments as well, but being realistic, they're the lesser of the evils. Capitalism/free market ideologies and welfare/socialist ideologies don't tend to correlate well, but if you look at welfare like a business investment in the future workers of the country, it does seem to correlate pretty well :].

Savoy Brown was awesome. I remember the 1st time I saw them. There were no old people there at all. They must have gotten more popular with an older audience. Almost everybody there was over 50

Can I suggest an 'admiral' as your first drink at the bar? An evil concoction of 4 vodkas and redbull (ice optional). Yes it's disgusting, or rather a distinguished taste - lightly put. An excellent kick-start to the evening though even for a mere real ale and sherry drinker...
I ended up having a flaming lamborghini as my first drink, it was pretty awesome :p:

Saw Super Chikan this year, in fact saw a private concert with him jamming with a Norwegian guitarist for half an hour or so. There were like 20-30 people there, so it was really intimate. Just him playing one of his homebuilt electrics through an AC30 and the other guy on acoustic.
Funny ass guy, loads of great stories and tunes.

So did he, was all over the place.
I'd say boy too, but ****, he was older than me :haha
(atleast at the peak of his playing, which, imo, was at around 27-28.)
Man, imagine where he could've taken his playing.

Yup.
The problem is that these people are all hyped up, because of their deaths.
I don't know.
Personally, I would've liked to see where Stevie was heading.
His playing was becoming more and more his own thing, not sounding some much like Albert King, etc. And then, he dies.
Typical. :haha

Rory Gallagher for me is one I would love to know what could've been. He'd reinvented himself a few years before passing involving himself in much more acoustic rootsy, folk, celtic and african sounds, yet still belted out his blues and blues/rock in his live shows. I love that man.
I'd always imagined Hendrix to later delve into electronica of some kind, or creating wildly diverse albums of all genres including non-guitar efforts, such was his creativity. Certainly would've seen him ditch the guitar at some point, then an old Hendrix I guess would go back to touring his old hits, back to the roots again. We can all dream!
There are so many 'what ifs?' not only in music but life, it's untrue.
JilaX^
10-16-2009, 10:39 PM
That is so true...
Hendrix putting down the guitar, however. I doubt it.
The man was immersed in the blues, particularly Buddy Guy. And I sincerely doubt he'd ever put that down.
You might've seen him collaborating with Buddy at some point. Which would've been fantastic to see......
And Rory, I totally agree.
What a guy. You gotta love his acoustic blues aswell... "Too Much Alcohol" "Nothing But The Devil" are probably my favourite tracks of his.
barefootboy
10-16-2009, 10:41 PM
Rory is another one, but it may be a blessing. We don't have to see a bloated shell of their former selves touring and poorly playing old hits from 30 years ago. I still wonder what might have been.

^^ That's quite the innuendo there, young man. :D
Why don't we share some of our favourite bluesy/jazzified licks and shtuff? Quick tab of it, whether your own or name the artist+song and if you wouldn't mind, the point in time in the song. I know I'm always interested in little tidbits I haven't heard before, and there's usually some lesser known stuff in this thread, some of which is quite enjoyable. I won't irritate the thread if no one else is on board, though...

A fairly quick Jazz-Blues thing in A.
A way to go from A Major (B.B King type stuff,) to minor.

oddly enough, as my tastes change and I try new licks, one lick always remains the same, and it consists of one note :haha:
before you laugh its the way the note has to be played that is important, listen to any Albert collins song and you'll hear it, he'll just hit that root note in the second position of the minor scale and make it scream with tons of vibrato, it always gets me

Well, it's all about making them interesting, add things. Flourishes, little details and licks, that make the song fun to play.
E.g. we're playing Mustang Sally, which a lot of people consider boring and overplayed. I do an Albert Collins solo in the middle, and voila. A lot more fun for me :p:
