gopher if you want a good place to download LOADS of hard to find blues stuff you should check out Soulseek, there's a blues room and all the regulars have like 10, 000 to 100, 000+ files of all blues music, all full albums.
It's free, its like limewire except without all the viruses, spam and spyware and you can download full albums instead of 1 song at a time.. Just google soulseek and download it, it's awesome.

Oh, and I recently got recruited to play a country/western/bluegrass gig in april. I was listening to the songs we're going to play today and I feel morally obligated to buy a telecaster now :(

Well that's not very helpful. Cool about the gigs thing, been starting to get subjected to country/bluegrass stuff lately and it's kinda growing on me. Wouldn't mind learning some bluegrass mandolin when I'm older.
Everyone needs a Telecaster, no matter what music you play.

I don't mind feed back, especially when I play slide, could always get a hum canceling pup for it too. Hell, I play thrash metal on my artcore. Did you see the pic of that resonator that I posted in the blues axe thread? that was it. It was a beast, man.

What chords does the guy on the strat play? Are they just minors or minor7th or something?

sounds like straight up 7 chords to me... standard minor blues. Try something like this:
B7 E6add9 F#6add9 F#7
e|7 7 9 9
B|7 7 9 x
G|8 6 8 9
D|7 6 8 8
A|9 7 9 9
E|7 x x x
Where B7, E6add9, F#6add9 are the I IV V and F#7 is a turnaround.

I only listened to a little bit of it, but it does NOT sound minor to me. I know this because I heard the lead guitarist using the major pentatonic and that wouldn't work over minor chords. I think he may be using 9ths, which have an almost minor feel, while containing the major 3rd. But I did not watch the whole thing, so I am not completley sure.

now that I think about it you're definitely right because the root note (B) is played as a 7 chord, not as a minor or m7. It's the 9's getting added like GD said that's giving it a minor feel.
TheDev01dOne
03-23-2008, 08:40 PM
Okay I will give that a try tomorrow, thanks guys, it was confusing the crap out of me trying to make the same sound.. Aren't add9 chords what Hendrix used a lot or something?
GD_GC
03-23-2008, 08:45 PM
It isn't and add9 though, its a 9, an extention of a 7th. The chord on the guitar will usually have the root, the major 3rd, the dominant (flat) 7th, and then the 9th. Try that out, I think that should work. An add 9 would not have that flat 7.
TheDev01dOne
03-23-2008, 09:00 PM
Damnit I suck at theory stuff.. So it's like a 7th chord and replace the 5th with a 9? I dunno. I need a guitar to try figure it out but everyone's asleep so I can't be arse going all the way to the music room and back.

No, you aren't replacing anything. You take a dominant 7th chord and add the 9th to it. The reason I left out the 5th is because the shape that I use most often for a 9th chord does not have the 5th. It is optional, the chord works with or without it, but both have a slightly different sound to them.
Now the difference between this 9th chord and an add9 is that the 9th chord is an extention of a dominant 7th chord. This means that if the chord is, for example, G9, you play a G7 (G, B, D(optional), Fnatural), and add the 9th, or 2nd an octave up (A). So the chord would be G, B, (D), Fnatural, A. This would be a G9, an extention of the G7. But a Gadd9 would be different. It would be a major chord, with NO flat 7th, where you add the 9th, or 2nd up an octave. Thus the name ADD 9. So you would take the Gmaj chord (G, B, D), and then just add on the 9th, or 2nd up an octave, A. So the chord would be G, B, D, A. You aren't extending a chord like the G9, only adding the 9th to a regular Gmaj chord. This is why it is called an add9.
Well that was long and I suck at explaining things, I hope that that made sense and helped you out.
EDIT: I just listened to the song and played along, the 9th works for sure. Its in B, try using the regular 7th chords on the root, and then on the IV, use this shape (the 9th)
e|x
b|7
g|7
d|6
a|7
E|x
Jimmy94
03-23-2008, 11:03 PM
the conclusion we can make from all of this is that music theory is confusing. I'm pretty sure both the 9 and add9 chords will work, interchange them as substitutions.
I think the reason that song is called stormy weather blues is because it's almost the exact same thing as Stormy Monday.
TheDev01dOne
03-23-2008, 11:05 PM
Bad weather blues.. I realise it's just a basic slow blues but I love the band, they are amazing live and I really wanna cover that song but I couldn't figure out those chord parts that I'll have to teach the other guitarist.. Then I gotta teach the bass player the bassline Lol
GD_GC
03-23-2008, 11:06 PM
NO NO NO!!!! add9 and 9 are not the same!!!!
:haha I'm sorry, I'm just a music theory nerd. The difference is the the 9 has the flat 7th as well, the add9 doesn't, it completley changes the sound, try it out!
Jimmy94
03-23-2008, 11:08 PM
I understand that! But both work in the progression, I play it all the time! Sometimes you can substitute chords with other chords! It's amazing!
Seriously, just play the tabs I wrote out and they sound great. In fact if I may so myself it's the most brilliant thing I've ever heard and that includes Beethoven.
I don't see why you're getting your panty hose tied in a knot over this. To be honest I prefer the sound of the E6add9, sounds more like the recording to me.

I'm not getting my panty hoes tied in a knot :haha
All I'm saying is that they sound different, and I really don't know too much about chords myself, I'm learning. So the E6add9 may work, I honestly don't know. The add9 is used in like "Little Wing" and stuff, and doesn't sound as bluesy, but they both will contain the same notes, so it doesn't really matter, the 9 just has one more. I really don't know, so don't think that I'm trying to prove you wrong or anything :haha

ok, I dug out my old theory book.
Chord Substitutions:
the IV is major, so these are all possible substitutions:
6, M7, M9, sus2, sus4, sus2sus4, Madd9, 6add9, M7#11, M9#11
It says the 9 is better for the dominant 7 (V), so it looks like we were both right... so the progression is most likely:
B7 E6add9 F#9

And barring it at the correct frets for the other chords seems to work and sound okay. Is that a 9th chord or have I just randomly made something up?
Thanks for the help BTW guys, I really suck at chord stuff, I like just straight A/A7 D/D7 E/E7 shuffles far too much Lol
Jimmy94
03-24-2008, 12:20 AM
that is still a 7 chord (if you check the open D that makes the chord a 7 and the 3rd fret on the B string is a D an octave up)
to make it a 9 you would have to add the 2nd fret on the high e string

Yeah I noticed today that old strings on acoustic + recording = horrible tone. Was listening to the recordings on my myspace and then noticed how black and filthy my strings were and how dull the recordings sound.
Experiment #1 this week while I'm waiting for my new amp is re-string my acoustic and record something with spanky fresh strings and compare the tones.
And Dimebag that will be awesome getting a new mic for recording. I've found a newly revived love for recording the last few weeks, it's very satisfying laying down something good and being able to just listen and be happy with it and share it with other people.

How does one determine what key to play in for a harp? I was trying to figure it out, and I couldn't get it
TheDev01dOne
03-24-2008, 01:20 AM
Your harp for cross harp should be the same as the IV chord. So...
E blues = A harp
A blues = D harp
G blues = C harp
C Blues = F harp
etc. etc.
The lower octave blues scale on a harp goes..
Draw 2 - Draw 3 (1/4 tone bend) - Blow 4 - Draw 4 Bend - Draw 4 - Draw 5 - Blow 6
With the Draw 2 and Blow 6 being your root notes.
/lesson. Lol I'm really enjoying learning and playing harp lately, it could become a great passion of mine.

Once you get the hang of single notes and bends it's just the same as guitar, play loads, steal/invent/learn licks and memorize them for soloing. It's great fun. Those Adam Gussow videos someone posted in here that are up on youtube are great, they're what really got me playing at a decent level to be able to jam over songs.. I'm up to about video 40 of 120.. Didn't learn everything from the first 40 though, but I just like watching the guy play and talk about ****.
As a random point, check out his albums of "Satan And Adam" where he plays with a 1man band blues guitarist and singer called Mr. Satan.. Great stuff, I got all 3 albums.
EDIT: Dimebag - I'd like to do that but I don't have any recording program stuff on my computer to be able to track over your track or anything so it probably wouldn't work out. I record everything with a portable 4track Zoom recorder thing.
GD_GC

If there's anything I could add to it that you would want, I could. I've always wanted to be a part of one of those UG colabs, but only if you need anything.
Dimebag22
03-24-2008, 01:33 AM
What you could do is plug in some headphones into your computer. Play harp along with my track while recording it on your Zoom (so that you don't get an echo of my track playing in the background). Then put that on the computer and I'll add it to my track, mix it, add more guitar parts ect. It might work out.

Have you guys ever had your stuff start to sound the same? Almost every time I start to play slide, it ends up sounding the same.
TheDev01dOne
03-24-2008, 03:30 AM
I'm kinda stuck in that rut too ATM, especially playing slide I think it's harder to think outside the box when you're in an open tuning.. It's so easy to just play I, IV, V with some twiddly bits between bars and hard to change things up. When I play slide I like to do 13bars or 17 bars or 16bars.. Just to change things and make you actually think about what you're doing.
Also if you have words to whatever you're playing then try to play the vocal melody while you sing it (Like the song 'The River' by Joe Bonamassa where he plays and sings the "That's where IIII layed down and diiieed" part both the same). I find that vocal melodys sometimes stray from the pentatonics/blues scales and have strange rhythms which helps find new things for slide to get out of the box.
Slide guitar is a strange thing, I've still not quite got my head around it completely. I guess it's one of those things that is easy to do but deceptively hard to do really well and originally.

Have you guys ever had your stuff start to sound the same? Almost every time I start to play slide, it ends up sounding the same.
ya, i experienced the same thing while playing slide. but just change your tuning and it will kinda change it up a bit, like i played in open G for awhile but then i changed to open D and it kinda made it a lil different. but also learn some new slide songs so u can learn new licks and methods to keep it fresh. i like to change genres alot, like play alot of different blues (slide, acoustic, electric, etc) then when i get bored or it starts to sound the same i just switch to something like funk, jazz, metal, punk, just alot of different genres. then when i come back to playing slide it feels a lil different to me and i usually play differently.
sry if none of that made since, i like to rant about guitar because mostly i have no one else to talk guitar to. all my other friends r into to hiphop and rap, and that stuff just drives me crazy. its like if i try to get them into a band like the black keys or the white stripes, they just think im crazy to like them because it sounds too raw and unprofessional. which is the very reason y i love them because it sounds like they just sat down and started playing.
but anyways, all my friends arent like that tho. i have an uncle who plays bass and a cousin that plays guitar and there pretty cool, but i cant seemed to find a drummer around my area. if i just had a drummer i would be set, i would have gigs and and i'd be playing clubs all the time.
but o well, what ya gonna do, crap im ranting again.
anyways, (returning to the question) just find new things to keep it fresh for ya.
cheers

How would I go about getting a microphone into my computer? I'll need a preamp right? Then how does the preamp connect into my computer?
TheDev01dOne
03-24-2008, 01:33 PM
Depends what kind of mic it is, dynamic or condenser? If it's dynamic you just need an adapter that's XLR > whatever the plug on your computer is.
If it's a condenser mic then it need phantom power so you'll need a mixer of some description that has phantom power, then the output signal of that into your computer.
You CAN get pre-amp stuff with either mics but it's not really neccesary for computer recording.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/MXL-Mic-Mate-XLR-to-USB-Mic-Interface-WPhantom-Power?sku=270707
It goes into a USB. Would that make it better quality than straight into my line in on my computer?
The Shure SM57 is a dynamic mic, and that's what I was thinking of getting if they had it in stock.

I had a pretty awesome day. Went to take my brother back to his house 2 hours away. I like seeing his friends 'cause I always piss them off. One of his house mates came down the stairs and into the living room and I said to my brother "Sam, you said he was ginger." about one of his friends, my brother had to explain... :haha and then I got CDs off of my bro, a Muddy Waters CD and A Lightnin' Hopkins one.
Then we went shopping and had a nice sandwich. :liplick: And on the way to the incredibly bad record shop, saw some emo's having a scuffle. They're such pussies. :p:
Had a look in said music shop, realised I had either lost £10 or hadn't brought it with me. Went to other music shop, got Blind Willie McTell's complete works, and a Blind Willie Johnson CD. I now have just over 303 Minutes of Blind Willie McTell to listen to. :haha

Theres 393 pages of blues! Most of it is about Blues artists lives, and recordings, but the first 80 pages is about the origins of the blues, and despite being fairly brief is excellent. Check it out.

Its basically discuss the influence that Robert Johnson had on the blues and american popular music as a whole. Its an easy topic, i'm just having trouble stretching it to fit 5-6 pages without just having a biography then disucssing his influence on people like Muddy Waters and as a result, chicago blues and rock and roll, then his rediscovery in the 60s by people like the stones, hendrix, clapton, etc and his influence there.
Its a good topic, just not for this long of an essay imo
I'll probably end up discussing his influence on media other than music, i.e. the fact that he is the "stereotypical bluesman" and the whole sold his soul to the devil thing

03-26-2008, 12:32 AM
Alright, try this for your thesis...
Robert Johnson, while being the quintessential epitome of a bluesman, has touched ever aspect of modern music, from artists such as Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin, to contemporaries such as The White Stripes, The Black Keys, The Mooney Suzuki, Soundgarden, Nirvana, and others even though he recorded less than fifty songs in his career and died at the age of 27.

I remember when I was little, like 11 or 12 and I used to watch the cartoon 'Hey Arnold' the one with the kid who has a football head, and he had an awesome black friend, I think his name was Gerald?.. And there was this one episode about like a ghost train that went through their town or some ****, so they were sitting there at midnight at the old abandoned train station and Gerald whips out a harp and starts playing/singing some blues..
Ever since then I've always wanted to learn harp so I could carry it around and just play whenever I feel like it, I'm so glad I'm taking the time/making effort to learn now, it's really satisfying to know I'm fulfilling something I wanted to do when I was so young.

I found out a few days ago that Blind Willie Johnson used to play with Blind Willie McTell on street corners. I sat there thinking: That is what I wanna do when I'm older. Play blues on street corners. But the saddest thing is that they never recorded, I think it would be one of the greatest records ever.
And on another note, if Robert Johnson had lived, imagine him with an electric guitar. He was of the same generation as Muddy Water, and Howlin' Wolf after all. And if Charley Patton made it to the 60's he would have been in his 70's, and probably still able to play.
I personally think Patton had greater influence on blues anyway, as he supposedly taught R. Johnson, and such. But the again, Blind Lemon Jefferson's "lead boys" ranged from Leadbelly to Lightnin' Hopkins to T-Bone Walker.

In terms of influence on the blues, Johnson actually had surprisingly little. Besides his raw emotional sound, he didn't really bring anything new to the genre. That being said, he also was an idol for the generation that brought us Muddy Waters (etc), and his rough sound definitely contributed to the sound of Chicago blues. And in turn they influenced almost all of rock and roll. Because of the re-release of his catalog in 1961, he was heard by all the greats of that generation, and they saw his influence and skill and used it in their playing. In terms of him playing an electric, there are actually rumors that he played an electric by th end of his life, but nothing substantial.
Not to mention his life story pretty much solidified the archetype fo the bluesman in American folklore...

^ I personally feel once again, that Patton was the first stereotypical bluesman to come to fame. He drank, did coke, gambled, fought, slept with other mens women, etc etc. had his throat slit by a jealous lover, had an incredible gravelly voice, played slide guitar. I mean, come on!
Johnson had a profound effect musically though, he was a great guitar player compared to his contemporaries he was technically miles ahead. His guitar runs are fairly complex compared to lots of other delta guitar players. And he gave rise to the 12 bar format which hadn't been used a lot before.
I suppose he could have played an electric guitar, as the "frying pan" guitar was made in 1931, but I don't think it was available commercially, and I highly doubt Johnson would have had the time, knowledge or fortitude to make one for himself. And I believe the first electric guitars were lap steels, and from, or in California. And I don't know to much about the states of the USA, but I know abut the south, and that he only traveled as far as Texas, which is at a guess, in the middle of the USA (amiright?) so that's about 1500 miles (roughly, at a guess) from California.
Wiki says that the a company "Audiovox" might have sold electric solidbody guitar as early as the mid 1930s. So perhaps. And as he recorded his 29 tracks in only 7 days, it's highly possible he did, but it was never documented.

I'm listening to an Interview, called "Monologue on Accidents" if you've heard "Southern Can is Mine" by The White Stripes, at the end, theres a clip from the interview. John Lomax if he has any "complaining songs" about the way the way the white man treated the coloured man, to which Willie replies no, because the world is as mean for the whites as it is for the blacks. That's deep, and to me it's great to hear someone like Blind Willie McTell speak his mind rather than singing for once.
