I'm gonna finally start playing some acoustic and am wondering what's a good acoustic electric around the 300-400 dollar range. I would like it to have nice tone whether plugged into an amp or not.

I've always been in love with the look of Ovation acoustics, I don't know if they make any in that price range though.

I'm looking to play stuff by Opeth and similar bands (don't know if that makes a difference). Sorry I'm a noob when it comes to acoustic. I greatly appreciate the help. :D

Ovations sound good plugged in, but acoustically, they're by FAR inferior to other brands. Check out the guitars in the "guitars for $300 and under" stickied thread. By the time you add electronics on top of those, it'll be around $400.

So when you say they sound good, would they sound good through a normal amp like my valveking or would it sound like crap without an acoustic amp.

I'm starting to look at craigslist now, finding some good deals.

I have an Ovation, it is similar to the model you posted, but like someone said, the acoustic tone is garbage. I think it has to do with the round plastic back. Oh, by the way, because of the plastic backing on a lot of the Ovations, they slide down your body/legs if you are sitting down and playing them sometimes. Bottom line, I'm looking to get a better acoustic some day.

I tend to steer people far away from Ibanez. They might sound ok, but the build quality has been known to be horrible. They look nice, but their materials are quite underpar for the price.

With Ovations, they'll be ok through your tube amp, but the overdrive will also go with it once you crank up the gain and volume. That's why Solid States are generally preferred with acoustic guitars. It'll work for sure, but it won't sound very acousticy when you push it.

Takamines are known for their wonderful playability. They're very quiet and well mannered sounding. However, this can be a good thing. I've never tonally maxed out a Tak. Tonally maxing out being when I strum the CRAP out of a guitar, it's tone will start to die off and sound really harsh(this happens more with cedar tops because of the wide grain patterns). Takamines can take ridiculously hard strumming without losing it's tone, which is definitely a plus.
