I thought you always used 440 on a chromatic tuner but I could be tuning incorrectly

440hz is the reference tone, an "A", its just how you define your "A" :)
Halfstep down has noting to do with this, i'm sry.

If A4 is 440hz then the half step down would be Ab4 at 415.3047hz. If that is what you wanted to know. But you can keep it at 440hz and just tune them half step flat.

You can tune down using the same reference pitch.
Of course, if you consider an Ab referenced from 440 to be your new A, then you could consider yourself to be tuned to A 415'3.

Ok I didn't used to know flats and sharps but I just tuned them to Eb G# etc..

Usually everything but strings 6,1, and 2 ring out as sharps on mine I use Eb exclusivley
