I generally play early clapton, cream era stuff, with a touch more treble than that. Don't get me wrong, great posts.

something like this:

Gain 7
Treble 7
Mid 7
Bass 7

;)

^^yeah just difference in amps i guess

WyldeGibsonPlyr i got those settings from the UG blues master (imo) himself, TNfootballfan62, so thank him

these are the settings i use for a good crunch.

mid 5.5
bass 7
treble 7
volume 5
reverb 4
gain 8

then i just adjust my guitars volume knob if i want less gain

on my amp these sounds nice and vintage

Yes, my amp is pretty bassy.

BTW, I'm flattered, but I wouldn't called myself a blues master, just an enthusiast. But if you consider me the master, im not gonna try and change your mind. ;)

well u sure seem to know your blues

by the way TNfootballfan62 do u know any type of settings for a newer age clapton-esq sound? it sounds really light and thin and ''sparkly'' haha .i know its low mids and not alot of gain.

^^^Hmmm...havent tried that tone out. What are some of the songs you're thinking about?

ZoSo.Led.Zep.

wonderful tonight..and his recent live stuff all sounds really light. any ideas?

TNfootballfan62
05-30-2005, 11:41 PM
^^^His tone doesn't seem "light" to me, but its definitly different. Wonderful tonight might not be played on the neck pickup, im not sure, ive always just used my own tone when playing that song. The difference in tone may be b/c with Cream, his main guitar, from what i understand, was a Gibson ES-335, and in his solo career, he has been known for using Stratocasters. Plus, the new live tone may be b/c he sold "blackey" and has that new strat. I'll try to get back to you with some more specific help after i try to figure out his tone.

ZoSo.Led.Zep.
05-30-2005, 11:53 PM
yeah i was wrong not wonderful 2night..i got the live cd's ''just one night'' i think its called..im looking for the tone he uses on double trouble and cocain..thanks man

Hi I have a Carlsbro Stingray 50 amp, Ibanez DT200 Destroyer Guitar, and a MT-2 Metal Zone pedal, can anybody recommend me any good settings for the following songs?
AC/DC- Highway to hell
Black Sabbath- Paranoid
Metallica Seek and Destroy
Judas Priest- Living After Midnight
Iron Maiden- Phantom of the opera

d_man2k
05-31-2005, 10:49 AM
Black Sabbath- Paranoid
Gain - 6-7
Mid - 3
Reverb - 4
Bass - 6

And set the tone knob on your guitar to zero.

The solo will sound weird because Randy played it through 2 speakers on different setting that how he got that unique sound.

what hes saying has nothing to do with treble hes talking about the mids dude, maybe u should read it again. the basic principle is if the mids are at 7 put the contour at 3. but jsut put it at whatever sounds best

y dont you people look earlier in the thread? like 2 pages back i posted van halen, kurt cobain, Kirk Hammet and Brian May. Also theres been afew more metallica settings since then.

for Gary Moore you can try this goos blues setting ( supplied by TNfootballfan62)

Bass 7
Treble 7
Mids 8-10
Gain 5-7 depends on song
Coutour at 3-4 not so high to suck the mids but not os low to sound crappy
maybe a splash of reverb
Neck pickup

This is the sorta setting i use when playing Foo Fighter-esq stuff, but maybe it would go ok for Green Day and stuff like that.
Treble 7
Bass 7
Mids 5
Gain 6-8
contour 6
reverb 1
bridge pickup

and remember look earlier in the thread

I feel your pain, dude. I have Pre gain, Saturation, and Post gain. And for some reason, my amp doesnt have a master volume, so here's what i do.

I use the Pre gain and Saturation to set actual gain levels (pregain moreso than saturation) and i use post gain to control volume. Hope i helped a little bit.

For songs like 1979:

Bass: 8
Mid: 7
High/Treble: 6
Pickup Position: 2 or 4 (Strat)

For heavier songs like Zero or Jellybelly:

Bass: 10
Mid: 4
High/Treble: 8

Use a thick heavy distortion with medium tone and a lot of sustain.

Alright, I don't know if this has gone before (I'm lazy, and it's kinda esoteric so searching would be hard :( ) but what I want to get is a really nice, smoooooth overdrive sound. Think Stash by Phish, or Larry Carlton's solos in Kid Charlemagne, by Steely Dan. All settings and also overall tips (crank the mutha f--- clean channel and then put on overdrive? methinks...) is greatly appreciated.

So what I have is:

Fender Am. Deluxe Strat
-or-
Carvin DC 400.

into:

Fender Hotrod Deville 4x10

with:

either Ibanez TS-7 or Boss Super Overdrive

This'll be tricky, both of those players use hollow/semi-hollow guitars into "dumble" style amps. Both of which are extremely hard to replicate. I'll try and get you quite close but I can't promise anything (I'll go for Larry Carlton because I know him more than Trey.)

Take your carvin (I assume thats a dual hummer?) and set it to the middle "combo" position. Now roll off the volume to about 9 or 8 and the tone to about 7 (more if needed) this should be about as close as you can get to Larry's tone. Although if either of your guitars have an active mid boost use that because Larry used to play with one of those in his strat and it gave him that "wow" factor on the "Last Nite" record.

Next I would take your TS-7, you don't want the level of the pedal to destroy your amp's input because you will loose your "smoothness" so instead adjust to get just a very slight boost. I've never tried the pedal so I can't say where this is, on my Bad Monkey it's about 11 o'clock. Next adjust the drive, you don't want grit so the very extreme questions are out of the question. Maybe try 1 o'clock to begin with and adjust a bit from their, but that should work well IMO. Then for the tone control roll it off a bit, you don't want brightness but you don't want dull ir unclear tones either so maybe try 12 o'clock and then adjust to your ears (keep in mind all the controls on a TS style pedal are interactive so if you get one sounding right with all the other controls not adjusted you'll need to change it when you've set the others!) You could also try using the gain boost switch to see if it gives you a more "liquid" tonality.

Now for the amp: I can't say as I've played this model so you may need to adjust these settings a bit. I don't know if its bright or dark etc.

OK plug into input 1 (higher gain input) and you will need to CRANK this mofo! To really get the compression and tone of these guys you'll need to really crank this amp. This means setting master to 10. I don't know how much drive/dirt you can get on your clean channel when it's dimed but if its got a bit of dirt going on then use that. If not use the lower gain drive channel. If you are using the clean channel set it's voume control to 10 or as near as you can get to it without getting microphonics or "screamy." On the drive channel use a low-ish gain, probably around 4 or 5, you TS will give it a boost which will cause it to get smoother. For either of the options add a bit of presence to the mix, it will add a bit of clarity and sparkle to the high end which is just what the doctor ordered! Try maybe 4 or 5, you don't want too much because then you get a really thin tone. Be warned the reverb control on most amps also acts like a presence control so you may want to disconnect the reverb tank if you don't use reverb and use it as another presence control (I can't state a setting because they aren't as strong as "normal" presence controls.) Lastly add a patch cord to short out the FX loop, this kills tone on almost every low cost amp I've seen. Leave the thing connected! If you have a FX loop control you may want to adjust it to taste.

With that out of the way you can get onto EQing this mofo! First of all set the mids to about 6 or 7. (perhaps more, it is a fender!) This should get you more into that Carlton feel. For the treble you want it lowered, if your amp is bright lower it even more. I would say between 3 and 4 for a Carlton tone should do it. For the Bass control I would leave it at about 5 but if you sound a bit thin bump it up to 6.

If nessecary you could then use your SD1 as a totally clean booster for solos. Set the gain to minimum and set level to the desired level. Leave the tone control on the same as your TS7 and be on your way!

To sum up here's my "recipe" for smooth Carlton tones:

Guitar:
-Mid (combo) position.
-Volume on 8
-Tone on 7

TS7:
-Gain on 6
-Tone on 5 or 4
-Level on 4

SD1: (if needed)
-Gain on 1
-Tone on 4 or 5
-Level adjust to taste, about 7 or 8 should work.

Amp:
-Short out FX loop
-Possibly take out reverb tank and use reverb control as presence
-Master volume: 10
-Presence: 4 or 5
-Clean volume: 10
-Gain: 4
-Treble: 4
-Mids: 7
-Bass: 5

Some last "tweaks" try swapping the cable direction of every instrument cable you have, you'll be suprised it DOES make a difference. On way will be much brighter and snappier and the other more mellow and smooth (you'll want this direction.) Also if your speakers have those little "clips" on them and they aren't soldered on; swap the polarity! Put the red connected to -ve and black to +ve and see if your tone gets better. Sometimes the absolute phase in the amp is changed and it makes the tone sound weird through the speakers, I found the top end got REALLY bad and clangy in the stock position on my amp so I switched it and it instantly got smoother and lost that horrible high end character.

Hope this helps.

hi guys i have three question which id like answered.

1. i run my guitar through a pandora PX4 effects processor witha 3 band EQ and then through my amp which also hasa three band EQ. how should i work the EQ? should i turn the amp all to frives and just run form the PX4? should i set them to the same numbers?

2. (I would like a more in depth description for this) What do I set the EQ to? I've never been to picky on tones. but i'd like to do a little learning. tell me what setting the EGs to will do for me....what kind of sounds will i get...please dont give me the usual "you jsut have to play aorund with things" cuz id liek to know what exactly im hearing when i play around.

3. What would i set my EQ to to get a warm jazz tone?

hey does anyone have a tone for the lead guitarist and singer Justin Hawkins of the darkness, the more specific tone i am after is on the solo on how dare you call this love?

also like the one on love on the rocks with no ice, and Street Spirit, and bareback

i got a gibson les paul studio, fender strat, line 6 spider 2 (modiling amp), and a pod xt live so i must have this tone somewhere amoungst these things

so if you could give me an idea for instance a cruch tone with bass... trebel... gain...mid.. and then any effects like a tube screamer or a delay

In reply to anyone lookin for the john frusciante tone:

For his clean sound he seems to have a lot of reverb, so i would turn that up, his treble around 7-8, same for mids, and 5 for bass. He also uses various chorus pedals like the chorus pedal ensemble for his clean sounds. Still not 100% sure about his distortion i think fiddling with a ds-1 or somethin might do it. I hope this helps

for hey joe i do this.. its not like the album version more like a live thingy.

bass 7
mid 10
treble 7
gain 6-8
reverb 3
neck humbucker with tone at 0
i turn the guitars volume down to like 5-7 for most of the song, but turn it up to 10 for the solo. maybe kick my ts808 for mind blowing sustain.

and for purple haze i use
bass 7
mid 7
treble 7
gain 5-7 (i use my fuzz pedal, but when not using it i use gain at this)
bridge humbucker
i sorta turn the guitars volume knob down abit to get that low gain fuzz when not using a fuzz pedal.

mind u these settings are with Les Pauls and a marshall tube amp.

Can anyone get a nice metal tone (not scooped mids, more like a Shadows Fall type of sound) from a zoom 606? It's pretty much the same as the 505II, so if you have that, then send me over some settings. I'm recording from the output of it, so no need to fuss with amps.

Now for my input to the thread:

I can get some nice EVH tones on my fender champ dsp 30 using a RAT 2 pedal in conjunction with the amp's distortion.

Amp-
Treble: 6
Mid: 7
Bass: 5
Gain: 5

Rat-
distortion: 9 o'clock
filter: 3 o'clock
volume: max

I'm sure you can get a similar sound using any type of overdrive, as I'm only really using the RAT to add some boost and sustain.

ZoSo.Led.Zep.
07-06-2005, 05:03 AM
when im just jamming with friends i use this setting.
treble 7
bass 8
mid 9
gain 7
reverb 2

or for clean boost (the teqninue used by randy rhoads, put a distortion/overdrive box infront of a tube amp and turn the level/volume all the way up and keep the pedals gain low to push the amp and overdrive the tubes)

amp:
gain 1
treble 5
bass 7-8
mids 7-10
volume- high

vintage tubescreamer ts808:
level 10
tone 4-6
gain 3-6

ontop of this i may kick on my fuzz pedal for super sustain.
these settings are for les pauls btw

this should be a sorta 'brown sound'..may be wrong setting...
gain 7-8
treble 6-8
bass 7-8
mid 10

and
gain 6
bass 6-7
treble 5
mid 5
reverb 2

EDIT: these may be the wrong settings for what im saying they are..theyre all scribbled down in a little book.

BTW does anyone have a good 80's hair metal setting (eg DIO, Dokken or Twisted Sister) or jsut some good blues jamming setting?

Hi

I have just bought my first electric guitar a week ago, been play acoustic for about 5years now.

My question is how do I get a sound from my electric guitar that sound exactly like Creed?

Can anybody help me with the combination of effects I need to use to duplicate a Creed sound or point me to a website or other source where I can get this information on Creed and other bands?

Basically what I want to know is, what amp should I buy and how should I setup my effects to sound like Creed?

Misfits from what era? The new stuff? I'd say you can pretty much fly with anything if you're playing punk. For an older punk sound (circa 1980) you'll want to max the mids, set the highs fairly high, and roll back on the bass. For a newer sound, you'll want to back off on the mids to around 5-6ish, boost the bass up to around 7, and keep the treble at around6 or 7. This all depends on the type of amp you have. It looks like your amp's 'Shape' knob could be some sort of mid boost/cut knob, so play around with that as if it were a mid knob. Your gain is gonna be between 5 and 8, whatever sounds best.
