Hey guys, I just bought an ESP LTD MH-400 NT, it's killer and i love it.

however

my finger tips keep turning black.

theres no evidence of why this would be happening, the fretboard seems clean, nothing unusual. I changed out the factory strings for the brand i usually use (GHS) and i've never had this problem before. i mean .. after a while my finger tips just turn black. its ****ing weird.

** EDIT** it washes off but.. wtf

any ideas? help? suggestions?

I learned about this in history class, black fingers mean that you have the bubonic plague and will probably die. Sorry man.

But seriously I heard of this problem when I was looking into the epiphone prophecy series. Is the fretboard ebony. Because if it is it could be that a die was applied to make it darker and what is happening is that its wearing off onto your fingers.

No i've never had it happen before with new strings. not even once and i've been playing for 6 years.

suck it up and wait for all the die to come off

I really don't know. Not really sure that thats the problem even but if the fret board is clean than its all I can think of. It might be that you just have to wait it out until the dye is gone if thats the case but there might be something that you can put on your fretboard to stop it from coming off as well.

Maybe the fretboard was stained to make it darker and even colored.

Apart from the fact that 400-series LTD's don't carry Ebony boards; it's all Rosewood. They could have still darkened them, but I've never heard of LTD darkening fretboards just to make them look like Ebony.
What strings are you using, TS? Are the strings coated in some weird way?

I have been playing for 6 years or something as well and this has never happened to me either. Weird!

This happened to me when I picked up an acoustic that hadn't been played for a few months earlier today.Black residue on the board and strings from built up oil and dirt.A quick application of finger ease and a cloth got rid of the problem.

Dude, i believe it's oxidization caused by sweat and acid from your hands reacting with new guitar strings. I've had strings turn black before (but not my fingers). No idea why some strings are more prone to it than others.

Are some strings coated with zinc, others nickle etc? could explain it....

[VictorinoX]

Bronze and copper used in acoustics and other types of string are more prone to that than others

It's common with new guitars with rosewood fretboard. It happened to me. Just clean the fretboard and it'll stop doing that.

Ernie Ball makes fretboard polish and cleaners. You might want to look into those and use them next time you restring. By the way this isn't wierd. It happens with my Schecter and my friend Epi korina V

This happens to me when I play my cheap acoustic, and my cheap Squier too and there is a weird smell too. The MH-400 isn't too cheap tho is it? Try cleaning the fretboard off.
