Cheers, I really wanted to put in that triplet part and that was the only way I could think of using it :haha If it doesn't work I'll probably take it out.

EDIT: It works so much better with vocals and stuff, I'm not sure how it really comes across in MIDI/RSE as well.

Oh, do you play it with your band then? Do you have a chance to record it?

Didn't get any of my money, but now I need to find another job. In the mean time, I need to stay with my friend's incredibly rich uncles. Hurray for feeling amazingly and profoundly out-of-place.

On the upside, I get to see Mastodon, High On Fire, Metallica, and maybe Them Crooked Vultures and The Mars Volta.

Besides that, all you canucks are incredibly lucky to live in such a wonderful country. Only bad thing I have to say about it is that cigarette prices are absurd.

Porcupine Tree is the best prog revival band out there

period

Wilson may be a jerkoff in the studio, but it shows in the class songwriting he does. Almost every album has a concept / theme to it.

Since this is the metal forum and all, I reccomend Fear of a Blank Planet as a first listen, followed by In Absentia and Deadwing

the old old stuff is more spacey and Pink Floydish, then they get a little metal influence, and the new CD combines it nicely

On the topic of prog:

I have the last issue of Guitar One ever. Had it since it was new. I wanted it because, well, it was the last issue, and secondly because it had Alex Lifeson on the cover, and a tab for "The Trees". Everything else in the issue, other that the Dream Theater and RATM tab, I wasn't REALLY interested in, and pretty much shelved it the past two years.

I dusted it off yesterday for the Trees tab again, and I see that not only is it a Rush issue, but it's a PROG issue.

Lessons include: Robert Fripp solo lesson, Steve Howe rhythm lesson, Marillion interview (never listened, but found it interesting), and various other tr00 prog tidbits.

And, of course, it was the last issue ever to be produced, and the last American guitar magazine worth buying. -_-

Well, Fripp wasn't interviewed, it was more-or-less a lesson on the way he solos.

This. I will always hold strong that Empire is the greatest SW movie.

The first broke ground, and laid the foundation for countless movies after it, for sure. But Empire is a TRUE sequel, and far surpasses the first not only in storytelling, but in performance, scale (ESPECIALLY scale), intensity, and overall grasp on the viewer.

There's not a bad movie in the original three classics, but Jedi always ranked third, for me.
Lateralus and Ænima got me started on prog
I liked Tool when Lateralus had radio play, but I blame Opeth on my prog likings, and paved the way for my current tastes. :p:

progbass

its true manti, so true

I think Empire is so great just because it shows maturity in the characters and their causes, and you learn more about the ancient order of knights and what befell them, AND THEN THE CLOUD CITY OMFG!

Tool opened the way to Opeth for me. Then I went to Porcupine Tree, and parrallell'd with brutal death and such like Cryptopsy and Suffocation

Haven't given TMV a good listen to be honest. And despite the Rush homage that is C&C, I like them. Muse is okay

I love Volta but yes their first two efforts were the best.

It goes

Frances > Deloused > octahedron > Bedlam and Amp

Empire rocked because there were so many plots all moving in different directions and it was filled with more mind-screwing twists than an M. Night Shamamamalamma movie.

Well, maybe not that many, but still there were some good ones...

Yeah, their first two were great and then Bedlam and Amputechture only have about...2 memorable songs each. Haven't actually heard all of Octahedron, but I should get on it.

I always thought Lucas was in total control...
Lucas only directed Star Wars out of the original three.

Irvin Kershner directed Empire, and Richard Marquand directed Jedi. Lucas was always on hand to make sure his vision was realized in the way he wanted, but he wasn't in the director's chair.

Basically, when he was directing Star Wars, he suffered from hypertension and nearly had a heart attack from all of the stress later on in the shoot, so he turned over directing jobs to other people for the other two.

Again, he was always directly on hand, and was basically a co-director, but was there mainly as an advisor.

And Sith worked well, but there was still a lot that I would have wanted from it. I mean, the prequels in and of themselves weren't all that stunning. FAR too much CG, plot holes, inconsistencies, etc.

But as Star Wars movies made for this generation, they work as standalone movies. As true prequels? That's where they kinda suffer. :p:

Also, does anyone remember Star Wars Mission from roughly 12 years ago? Right around the time the Special Editions came out:

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Star_Wars_Missions

I have roughly the first 12 books including the suitcase, etc. I STILL love these things. The reason I mention these is because, if I read these while watching the prequels, I would have known Palpatine was the Emperor before I found out, because he was called Emperor Palpatine in the books.

Basically, for all that don't know, those books were "Create Your Own Adventure" books, where there were dice and cards, etc. You picked a character, a weapon, and a vehicle, and then you rolled the dice to determine where you would go in the story next.

I don't know why, I still just love it. It's REALLY simple, of course, since I had it in first grade, but still. :p:

Posting one of my own posts again, because I think it's relevent to the metal forum as well.
Is anyone else surprised at the lack of PR that labels put into forums?
I mean, I know it's not great to have "THIS BAND IS AMAZING, YOU SHOULD LISTEN TO THEM NOW" forced down your throat, but, there's more subtle ways that you can do your job AND make people actually interested. Look at that chick from Deathwish who posted in the Lewd Acts thread. No hyperbole, no over the top crap, just a simple "Band is awesome, I hope you guys will support them".
There's so many things that labels can get across through forums that no one else can.
Taking out ad space is great, but if no one reads the magazine or see's the flyer...
Forums (especially UG) have that huge base built in. All you have to do is post in the relevent thread and BAM, people will click links, things will be bought, etc etc.

Ie: I don't mind reading "Hey guys, glad you all enjoy _____, we're really proud to have them on our label, anyone else really like *insert specific song*'s verse riff?" because I see them as humans, not spam bots.

Butt Rayge

Ah I get you.

If a label was to make some people go on forums just to spark up some discussions on bands it'd probably be great. Fans of smaller bands would have someone to discuss them with and the band would ultimately get more recognition.

Having a fan or an expert from the label would be beneficial for forum users because they could get reliable updates and information, but if they just sent a single person to promote all of their bands at the same time, they might aswell just have spam bots. The person promoting would have to genuinely like the band for it to work.

Magero
09-20-2009, 08:23 AM
Exactly.
I think it would be great for a few people who actually know what they're talking about (and preferably some who can read forum rules haha) to post here and there. They don't have to be regs, but I mean, look at how effective having the guys from NeO post was.

Butt Rayge
09-20-2009, 08:24 AM
I'm not a fan and I've never been in their thread...

But I hear their guitarist or something is a user?

Magero
09-20-2009, 08:25 AM
Vocalist and Violinist both post a fair bit, answering questions, keeping people up to date, etc and that's part of the reason people love them. They're easy to talk to, just people, not spam bots.

Butt Rayge
09-20-2009, 08:30 AM
It'd be cool to have other bands do that.

To diverge a little, or rather, a lot... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3Vcoq-QRo4

It's worth noting though, that a fair few users here promote their bands in signatures etc.

Is there a difference between users for whom the forum came before the band, and vice versa? If a fairly successful band member starts posting here, that's one thing. But what if Aeternitas, Soul Solitude, Vindicator or whoever else, ended up making it big?

Magero
09-20-2009, 08:44 AM
I think it's still a different thing.
I'm a user first, band member second.
With stuff like NeO, they come across as band member's first, user's second.
You know?

I understand that the discussion wasn't directly linked to my band, but it was weird reading the discussion and seeing coryphaeus mentioned :p:

and thanks for the kind words man, did I send you the 3 track on with no cover? or the 7 track one with a cover?

freddaahh

Both. You sent me a three track one which was so scratched it didn't play, haha. Then I got the seven one a few weeks ago which I loved.

and thanks for at least asking Fred, the bassist can get us a few gigs in exeter, we can arrange our own local gigs, we have some promoters interested in us, and we're trying for places in some small festivals too so a gig in bath would also help, since I hear the metal scene is booming there at the moment?

I'm not sure if booming is the right term, but it's alive at least. Two bands signed recently, but Bristol is more lively, just for the number of bands around.

Exeter? It's about as dull as a grey shaded beige sweatshirt there.

You should've came to Alberta. No PST FTW!
I don't know what PST is, and I want to be close to civilization, so no Alberta.
Sucks that it's a scam. Are you still going to stay for the same amount of time? And I thought you hated Mastodon?
I am, and I only hate their last album, and Brent's annoying presence.

And yes, Baroness is way better than Mastodon.
Whaaaa. What did I miss....
OMG Dyers, you're like, soooo out of the loop, how tragic...
Short story: I'm in Toronto now.

Provincial sales tax, tax that gets added onto the already GST. So, basically just two taxes instead of one.

Yeah, you're right.. ...it's fairly desolate over here. Getting cold again too.

So guys, new Halo game is on its way. I'm sure there's going to be a slew of 'OMG HALO IS SHIT WHY WOULD YOU PAY FOR IT WHY NOT PLAY (insert obscure game here), but Halo 3 was awesome, and I hopse ODST will be good too.

Agreed. I just got my paycheck two days ago...although, i'll probably just rent it :p:

I liked Halo 2 a lot, but Halo 3 definitely has its good points as well. I don't think they're honestly that bad, you kill people, you get killed, you have fun. That's what gaming should be about.

ODST I think i'll actually like better... Who cares if I lose if i'm just a lowly peon :haha

EDIT: My agreed was with CTFOD

Haven't played Baldur's Gate.

:haha To be honest I agree with that video to an exent, but H3 was damn fun. I just hope there are no levels like the one in Halo 3 where you're in the Flood ship, or like the one in the first game where you're in that fucking library for hours.

Halo 2 > Halo 3 > Halo (which I only played through like once ever 96876594 years ago) > stupid god damn Halo Wars

I predict ODST will be plenty fun, especially without the fucking Flood popping up wherever they please. :haha:
