I was listening to the smashing pumpkins earlier and Jellybelly came on and suddenly realized "oh ****, saliva stole that riff for Click Click Boom!"

i noticed a long time ago that the beastie boys butchered the smoke on the water riff for Fight For Your Right To Party.

anyone else have any? and I'm not talking about chord progression, 'cause obviously a lot of songs use the same ones, I'm talking about riffs or melodies.

Some peculiar cellphone sound, mostly used for text messages; sounds exactly like one of the riffs from PONR Part 1: Mute Requiem by Quo Vadis. I always tense up when I hear it, because that song is awesome.

No it's really not. Just because it has the same "2-2-5-2" opening as Crazy Train, it doesn't mean that they are the same. Plenty of songs have riffs using the first 2 notes of the most popular scale in that order

And btw they are both in F#minor, but they really are nothing alike.

EDIT: In fact, Crazy Train doesn't even start with "2-2-5-2", therefore they are complately different.

I admit they have a similar kind of idea, but it's the same scale and they're playing different notes....it doesn't sound at all like Russell "stole the riff of another song" to me.

The Air That I Breathe has the progression in places, but a completely different melody. In (rock) (all) music, the same basic chord progressions are used over and over and over again. Get used to it, because there isn't a whole lot you can do about it using the Western music system. By your logic, I could safely say that the Beatles ripped off the Beatles (or in other words, were uncreative, overrated twats who didn't really change the way music was written), because a whole LOT of their songs used the same or extremely similar progressions... Yes, progression is hugely important, but so is melody.

I'm a huge fan of both Radiohead and the Beatles, and I fail to see any similarity between While My Guitar Gently Weeps and any of Radiohead's material. Unless you're trying to compare it to Karma Police, in which case, Sexy Sadie's progression is much closer. The progression in While My Guitar Gently Weeps is more similar to Muse's Stockholm Syndrome, but in a different key, if you're really going to boil it down... It's an extremely common progression.

Sorry if offended, but I'm a diehard Radiohead fan...

See my previous post.

And in response that Amnesiac is a total ripoff of krautrock... Radiohead took inspiration from krautrock, they didn't steal it... Don't be ridiculous. That's like saying that Ozzy Osbourne ripped off the Beatles because he was a Beatles devotee as a kid and tried to recreate their sound. It's just rubbish. Of course, after Tony got his fingers messed up, that dream went out the window... I would've loved to see Ozzy in a Beatles-esque band. :p:

Roaches Last Resort vs the after solo riff on Maidens Bring your Daughter to the slaughter

Also what i will keep on saying forever, band called Stone, song Get Stoned vs Enter Sandmans main riff by Metallica.

Get Stoned is on Stones debut wich was released 1988. Black Album was released at 1991.

Similarities are on the riffs structure and Get stoned is just played an octave higher.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWHlr3U_s8Q Or what do you think? When the guitars stop making the whale sounds and drums kick in, check that out

You know how Enter Sandman goes

Also compare Stones Last chance after solo riff to Avenged Sevenfolds Almost Easy "moshadelic" riff

Oh please, even the vocal melody is stolen from the Hollies. Just listen to that. Do you ever wonder why Radiohead hate that song so much? As for the second video.. Thom Yorke has admitted on many occasions that he listened to the Beatles solidly while writing for Ok Computer. He borrowed from them. Just accept that Radiohead occasionally steal music all together. The progression is not only similar, but so is the instrumentation, arrangements, etc. But you still knew that I was talking Karma Police.

I didn't say that. I said listen to Krautrock and you'll find your answer. There are a few Can and Popol Vuh melodies popping up on Amnesiac, I'm just too lazy to go through them and find them. But really, just because you like a band doesn't mean you can't acknowledge when they blatantly steal something, IE: The Hollies. I still love Portugal. The Man but can still acknowledge they have the Vitamin C melody on their newest album. And know that they're a fan.

Adam's song-Blink 182 (sounds like one from metallica)
Since ive been loving you (the first lick is exactly as the one in new york blues by the yardbirds)
Beat it-Michael jackson (kinda soudns like day tripper by the beattles)
Bon Jovi's riffs all sound like the same, especially you give love a bad name and living on a prayer (and maybe its my life)
Seek and Destroy-Metallica (it reminds me of some lick in Hendrix's all along the watchtower)
Original Prakster (sounds like the Pynk floyd riff, some friends had a band before and they also made a song with that riff)

EDIT:
Sunshine of your love by Cream sounds like ina Gadda da vida by iron butterfly (or viceversa, i dont know wich of the songs came out first)

Different riffs by the kinks sound a lot the same

EDIT 2: i made a bass riff months ago and realized it was exactly like the master of puppets intro riff just that with more fills, oh and before that i never hear master of puppets

Hmmm never thought about that before but now that I think about it you are right .

It sounds so much alike, even though the riffs are played differently.
Warning goes like: E A D A

Picture book is played something like: 0-0-2-4 on E, A, then D. Then a riff back down to A Which makes it sound similar. The chords are something like E, A, D, then G.

Sounds so similar, but yet played differently.

Off the top of my head:

Welcome Home(Coheed and Cambria) sounds a lot like Kashmir(Led Zeppelin).

Washington is Next!(Megadeth) is a little to close for comfort to Wasted Years(Iron Maiden)

And this isn't really theft, but the beat of Dani California(RHCP) reminds me a lot of the bridge in The Four Horsemen(Metallica).

EDIT: Last Resort totally steals a riff from Genghis Khan (Maiden)

On a completely un-rock-related note, that crappy song by Sean Kingston that was all over the radio sounded a bit too much like D'Yer Maker by Led Zeppelin

Nirvana - Come As You Are is a ripoff of Killing Joke - 80's. I Never Wanted by As I Lay Dying has a very similar riff to Change (In The House of Flies) by Deftones. I always thought Last Resort ripped off Genghis Kahn by Maiden. And I know this is vague, but the Offspring have a song on their latest album that takes the vocal melody from Running Out of Time or Time Is Running Out or something by Muse. its only for a few seconds before the chorus.
