:wavey:Hey Guys!! :wavey:

This is
!!!The Gear for Metal Thread: Version 2.0!!!
You can ask a question here about the gear you need for playing Metal. If you are Practicing or Gigging IT DOESN'T MATTER!
I and some other guys will politely answer them, or you could just pick a gear that you like in the list bellow and ask us what our opinion is:)

Just remember to Post your:
Budget (post NUMBERS and currency)
Location
New or used
Gigging or no
the Bands that you play
and your preference (handles pedals well, has an FX loop, single channel, multi channel, digital, etc.)

:headbang:ALL Sub-Genres are accepted, Like Thrash,Black,Metal Core, Everything that has a use of High Gain in them. :headbang:
Mid gain genres are also accepted but you must have a high gain genre as your main genre ;)

So ask away!!!! :type:

celestion.com
as far as i have experienced, the v30s are great for metal. these paired with g12 k100s make a nice cab. g12t 75 is often used as well, but does not produce as clean of a bottom end
eminence.com
a large number of these speakers are suited to metal, including the texas heat, the governor, the swamp thang, the manowar, the black powder, and the high wattage legend.
warehousespeakers.com
basically equals to the celestions but at a cheaper price. i have found these to be better sounding in personal opinion

You can find Vettas for $400-$500 (IDK the conversion)

Also, the Marshall 8100 is VERY good. Definetely worth checking out. In Flames used one from Lunar Strain all the way to Whoracle. Then they changed to 5150s and Laney VH100Rs. Chuck Schuldiner from Death (RIP) used a 8100 as well.
Yeah its mainly because of Chuck that i went looking for it.
From what I've gathered, the 8080 is pretty much the combo version of the 8100, is that true?
(I would get a vetta, but then again, nothing around here :haha )

the TS9, 808, and the TS9DX ??

the amount of gain they have and the parts (older versions v.s newer ones)they used
and the # of knobs
So nothing to do with quality? odd considering the TS808 is $100 more expensive than the TS9. Just gain, parts, and knobs?

so you cant get Maiden on a B-52 ??

when you get it, EQ it a bit and try it out, then if you cant get your tone then get the 808.
but the B-52 can get those bands alone. you just have to EQ it right

Id go with the greenbacks. The legends do not have a very pronounced mid to high range. If you paired them with your 5150 it would sound muddy IMO.

Looking for an amp...

Budget: $600
Location: Middle of nowhere, Iowa (Ayrshire, Iowa...about 3 hours SE of Soiux Falls, South Dakota)
New or used: Used
Gigging or no: Soon to be
Bands that you play: Helloween, Stratovarius, Kamelot, Hammerfall, Van Halen, Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden etc. etc. Power Metal mostly...

EDIT: First Act is the LAST guitar I would expect to see UG reccommend.

If it wasn't for the Wal-Mart guitars, you'd probably see more First Act stuff. First Act isn't all that bad.

To answer your question, I'd say a Marshall JCM2000 DSL100 could cover each and everyone of those bands with ease. If you look hard, you can find the head for $600. That would literally be PERFECT for you

the clean channel on the 6262 destroys the "clean" channel on the 5150. I play alot of slightly stoopid, sublime, stuff like that on it to, and it works perfectly. The only thing the 5150 does a little better is classic rock, but that could be fixed with a ts9

Hi, I'm looking for a decent amp (prefer a non-combo amp). I play mainly newer metal. I would prefer a Tube amp, but I know with my budget that's tough so I don't mind having to get a SS.

Budget: Maximum of $600 CAD
Location: (South) Ontario, Canada
New would be easiest but will go used if needed
Non-gigging, but if needed should be able to play a small bar venue
Bands: All That Remains, As I Lay Dying, Killswitch Engage, (Old) Metallica, Dream Theater, Animals As Leaders

DONT order from beyond eleven, they do not tell you if something is in stock or not untill after you order, and then you have to either wait or go through the hassle of retracting your payment/finding a new item

How is the Laney LX 65D ? Suggest me something <250$

I have also decided to get a DigiTech Death Metal Distortion. Are there any better distortion pedals in that price range ? What other pedals should I opt for ? I am generally into thrash/death metal and some hard rock.

The Pacifica is good... the digitech is not. Get a Hardwire TL-2. It will crap on the Death Metal. If you want a REALLY good amp for your genres, get a B-52 At-112... it is $360 though, but you will NOT regret it. You also won't need a pedal with it.

Well.. yeah I can try.

BTW, I cant get Hardwire TL2 either coz it way beyond my pedal budget. You see, in India, any kind of hardware is much more expensive than in US or any other country... and when converted directly, the TL2 is available for 160$ :|... can I get the Boss Metal Zone 2 instead ? Its available here for 100$ (direct coversion) and thats the furthest I can stretch to when it comes to the pedal.

Uhm, I guess it all depends on whos tone you're looking for from that album. For leads I believe Freidman used a Crate Blue Vodoo, they no longer make them but if you find one used it should be well in your price range. I think Mustaine has always used Marshalls, but I'm not to sure on that one. I also vaguely remeber there being some disageement over a preamp used during this recording as well.

I'd say look into some (used) JCMs, Blue Voodoos, and depending on what the market is like for them in europe used ENGL (it's what Friedman currently uses, as well as Chris Broderick who is Megadeths current lead guitarist).

Really!? I would've thought that something like a used JCM2000 DSL/TSL would've been in you budget, same with a used Blue Voodoo. Here in Canada those go used for about $500-$650 so I thought they'd be around the same over there. I thought the ENGL would've likely been out of your budget, but maybe you'd have had some luck and found a used Thunder.

Well, for something cheaper ... you might want to check out a Peavey 6505 112 combo. It's one of the amps I've been looking into and I mainly play thrash and doom metal. You could check out one of the Vypyrs as well. Don't know how well it would work for a Megadeth tone but the Blackstar HT-5 is supposed to be pretty awesome for the price. Just some food for thought.

Clean – Standard clean. Some say it’s a tube JC120 tone; great for effects.

Blackface – Based on a Fender Blackface Reverb (without the ‘verb). Not quite there, but still a great clean. ~$120-175 used, $209 new.

Deluxe (or DLX) – Based on a Fender Blackface Deluxe, and much truer to the sound of the modeled amp. Breaks up fairly soon, making for a good overdrive, but proper dialing and passive pickups can provide great warm cleans though. ~$120-175 used, $209 new.

Tweed – Based on a Fender Tweed Bassman. Close, but no cigar, but still a great country clean or SRV style OD. Similar to the JTM. ~$120-175 used, $209 new.

Top Boost – Based on a Vox AC30 with a bit more drive (think Brian May). Capable of good cleans, and has a mod to bring the specs and sound closer to the AC30. ~$120-175 used, $209 new.

KH-1 – Kirk Hammet’s signature clean, based on several vintage Fenders. Tuned to handle the output from active pickups, and sounds somewhat like a brighter, more chimey Blackface. ~$175-200 used, $259 new.

Super V – George Lynch’s signature clean, based on a Vox, but with woodier mids, also a hybrid like the KH-1. Better stock cleans than the Top Boost, but still capable of grit. ~$175-200 used, $259 new.

JTM – Marshall JTM45 tone, capable of Brit Cleans and AC/DC and Zeppelin style crunch. Can hit Sabbath tones with a good treble booster or fuzz pedal. Very similar to the Tweed in tone. ~$120-175 used, $209 new.

Brahma – George Lynch’s signature crunch tone, based on his 61’ Plexi. Capable of everything from British cleans to hotter Plexi roar. Takes well to boosts and higher gain tubes like Lynch’s favored Yugoslavian 7025’s. ~$175-200 used, $259 new.

Plexi – Hot Plexi tone, the module that the Brahma was designed off of. Capable of “gritty” Marshall cleans, but excels at crunch tones. ~$120-175 used, $209 new.

Ultra Lead – Medium gain module frequently called the “Steve Vai” module. Similar to a modded Marshall or old Carvin (maybe). Designed solely for lead tones, it has a muddy rhythm sound as a result. Module is also somewhat noisy stock, but can be modded by Pete Turley into a Mesa Mark Series preamp, which is far more versatile and useful. Still good for leads stock with the controls near max. Discontinued, and rare. ~$100-175 used.

Brown – Basically an EVH module. Somewhere between the Plexi and SL+, but with its own signature sound. Discontinued, and rare, but the sound can be obtained by a mod from Pete Turley that utilizes a Plexi module. ~$100-175 used.

Med-High Gain Modules

SL+ – Pre-November 2007 this module was based on a Marshall JCM2000 DSL/TSL with heavy lows and scooped mids with a Marshall edge. Nov. 07 and up, tighter bass and more prominent mids that voice the module like a JCM800. Gain knob at noon is the same gain as a JCM800 maxed out. Great versatile module. ~$120-175 used, $209 new.

XTC – Bogner Ecstasy module, another “Steve Vai” mod with a great creamy lead tone. Stock version lacking in good rhythms, but cleans up well. ~$120-175 used, $209 new.

Mr. Scary – George Lynch’s Lynch Mob rhythm tone, based off of a Soldano SLO. Similar to the SL+, but with that Soldano “bite”. This module gets you into hair metal heaven with some delay and chorus. - ~$175-200 used, $299 new

KH-2 – Kirk Hammett’s signature rhythm sound, reminiscent of their mid-80’s tone from records like Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. A semi-hybrid module, it has characteristics of both a Marshall JCM800 and a Mesa/Boogie Mark series amplifier (both of which were strung together to get some of their sounds in that era), but is closer to a hot rodded, American voiced Marshall. ~$175-200 used, $259 new.

1086 – Dan Donegan’s signature module with a high and low gain switch, and a high and low midrange switch. Very versatile stock module, but gets mixed reviews from people. The scooped mids side is more American toned, like a Mesa Recto, while the boosted side is very Marshally. The high and low gain switch takes this from Plexi crunch (and even cleans) to killer high gain. Sounds best modded, and also really comes alive with dropped tunings (like Dropped Db and Db standard, and below). ~$175-200 used, $259 new.

Modern – Great overall high gain lead sound, very smooth and with a nice amount of sizzle. The rhythm tones on this one are questionable, and not many people dig it for that, which is why it's used primarily for lead. The overall tone of the module can be compared to a Krank Krankenstein, but isn't spot-on. This module is the foundation of many mods by Pete and Anthony, but is becoming harder to find. I will update with more information as I find it. Discontinued and rare. ~$100-175 used.

Recto/Rectified/Treadplate – These three modules are basically the same, but with circuitry upgrades that fixed high noise and flubby low end (Treadplate is the newest model). This is based off of a Mesa/Boogie Dual or Triple rectifier. ~$120-175 used, $209 new.

Grail – George Lynch’s signature lead tone, based off of his old two-channel Mesa Dual Rec, one of the first 500 ever made. Provides a more accurate representation of a Recto, but also has been known to sound like a Peavey 5150. One of the best stock high gain modules. ~$175-200 used, $259 new.

Ultra – Randall’s signature high gain tone. This has a very scooped midrange and big bottom end. Great gain, very moddable, but doesn’t record well stock, unlike the Ultra XL. However, some like this module’s sound better in live situations. This and the Ultra XL are fairly noisy due to the high gain though. This is remedied with a noise gate, a mod, or using a JAN Phillips 5751 preamp tube in the amp’s Phase Inverter. ~$120-175 used, $209 new.

Ultra XL – Randall’s other signature high gain sound, with more midrange and a tighter low end than the Ultra. Sounds better recorded than the Ultra and is one of the best stock high gain modules available. This and the Ultra are fairly noisy due to the high gain though. This is remedied with a noise gate, a mod, or using a JAN Phillips 5751 preamp tube in the amp’s Phase Inverter. ~$120-175 used, $209 new.

KH-3 – Kirk Hammett’s signature lead tone, and rhythm for Metallica’s 90’s albums. Higher gain version of the KH-2 with more mids and bottom end. Has a fairly dry gain for some, which can be compared to Krank or VHT. One of the best stock high gain modules. ~$175-200 used, $259 new.

However, some people prefer to go to somebody with experience, such as Pete Turley at Gigmods (http://www.gigmods.com/index.html), Anthony at Salvation Mods (http://www.myspace.com/salvationmods), or Dave Friedman at Racksystems USA (http://www.racksystemsltd.com/). All of these modders, as well as a few more can be found and contacted at Randall’s forums found through their site.

Sell the metal pedal.

How much can you spend on a cab? Which size do you want? 2x12, 4x12 etc etc

Are you gigging.

The Bugera cabs are actually VERY good for metal (assuming that's what you play)

Here is a good clip of a 6262 running through a Behringer cab (same as the Bugera)

i will be gigging hardcore punk...but to me it dosent matter as i have one ds1 to try punk and i love to playmetal so i will be playing metal any other time...u reckon a 6262 is better then a 333xl. I will be buying the head then after a while buyign a cab i reckon 500 aus for cab? is that not enough for a good cab if i need mroe i will go more..once again it comes with reverb dosent it ??? is it a good reverb???

It converts to about $400 USD... that's enough money for a good cab. Here is a good one for $430. A REALLY good one. http://avatarspeakers.com/ I don't know if you want a 2x12 or 4x12 but it will be just as loud, if that matters. Get two V30's in the contemporary one.. (I hope they ship to Australia..) If they don't, a Bugera cab will be decent enough. Did you see the clip I posted? That's with the "cheap" Behringer cab.

For hardcore punk and metal, you'd be fine with either a 6262 or 333XL. I 've never played the 333XL before though, but I have played a JSX (what the 333XL is based on) and it would probably be a better choice. The Crunch channel would do punk brilliantly due to the high mid focus, and the crunch also has enough gain for metal too! You'd probably be better of with the 333XL. I prefer the 6262 for metal though...

As for the reverb, the 6262 had decent enough reverb, IDK about the 333XL

Holy ****, that's the longest post I've ever typed on this site.

The reverb on the 6262 isnt very good. Its decent if you keep it below 3, but any higher then that and it just sounds bizarre. As for whether to get the 333xl or the 6262, it all depends on what type of tone you want to get out of it. The 6262 is more saturated and raw while the 333xl has more of a crunch sound to it, its hard to explain so here is a video to help you decide

I beg to differ. I think you can actually get some great sounds out of it if you work at it for a while and run it through a good cab. And the added preamp tube mod that can be done is supposed to make it even better. And it's not really a hybrid, as it does have a TRUE tube Power amp, but I guess the preamp is still digital. The mod that can be done to it practically makes it all tube though.

I played a Bugera cab through various amps, (Randall T2, V2, Mesa etc etc...) and it sounded really good. It raped the 6505 cab I tried, and hung with the 1960b pretty well. You'd be happy with it, especically if you put some V30's in it.

Hey guys, when I get my new amp (either a 6505, Rev Jr., with an outside chance of it being an ENGL Thunder) I want to move away from using my ME pedal and go into using regular pedals. I usually like to put some chorus into my tone, so I guess my question is what would be a good chorus pedal to compliment those amps or just a good one in general? Budget is in the range of $100 with some room for flexibility and I am willing to go used but would prefer new.

Edit: Saw the list of the guitars at the front an realized I forgot to post the links for the ones I suggested.

Anyone want to give a couple of suggestions for pedals? I've sold a lot of my old gear and I've got ~1000 USD to spend. I'm not a big tone freak, but I'm paying attention to my tone more lately. I don't want a lot of pedals that make it hell for me to navigate around the floor. So far I'm just thinking of a boost/distortion, delay or reverb pedal, possibly a flanger, and a looper to play around with. Some pedals I've had in mind are: Pro Tones Jason Becker, Maxon/Ibanez TS, Boss DD3, MXR M169, Ibanez Airplane, and an Akai Headrush. Looking for a more recent - Marty Friedman/Paul Gilbert. I mainly play hard rock/shred/heavy metal. But I'll venture into CoB, Lamb of God, Aushvitz - type metal.

So far my main rig is: Carvin CT6M/RG3120 -> RMC5 Wah -> ENGL Blackmore -> Mesa Recto 2x12.

Damage Control Solid metal for distortion is very good, or Seymour Duncan Tin Tube Mayhem.
Memory man for delay maybe?
Furman RV-1 Reverb for reverb?
Jam-man for looper.

hello

I have a question about amps.

What amp do I need to re-create the sound of slipknot, stone sour, in flames or alexisonfire (just som examples of the music i want to play).

I will play live (with my new band I hope hehe =P) and my budget is about 1000 USD.

I have checked out ENGL Fireball and it seems pretty nice, but can I get anything better to get the tone that I'm looking for.

Thanks in advance

Phille

Edit: Im just looking for a head

Ive had both a fireball and a 6262, they are both awsome amps in their own right. The bugera is more articulate with a less pronounced bottom end and not as much gain. The fireball is almost over the top in the gain and bottom end department. It all depends on what sound you are going for. But for 600 new with a one year warranty, the bugera 6262 is hard to beat

Nope :p: Only way I can think of getting close to an Orange for less cash is a customized preamp by Salvation Mods for the Randall MTS series :p: What's your budget?

EDIT: Just saw it's around a grand. You might be able to score a Randall RM50 head for about $400-500 and get a module (any high gainer will do, and they can mostly be acquired for about $150-175 used) sent over to the Czech Republic where Salvation Mods can turn it into a module they call the Stonerverb. Here's how it sounds:
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=909142&content=songinfo&songID=7515602
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=894143&songID=7705670

Altogether the head and two modules (with this one being modded) the amp should be around $1000, maybe a tad over depending on the clean module you get, and if you get a pair of JJ 6V6's to put in it (although the RM100 would get you closer, since while the Rockerverb is only 50 watts, it runs on 4 6V6's, but the RM100 is more expensive).

EDIT: Ah, the combo runs on 6V6's, the head runs on pretty much anything, so the stock JJ 6L6Gcs should be fine :D

What do you mean votes? There is no poll :confus:

I would just pick the most intelligent people from each of the br00tal gear threads (ENGL, VHT, Diezel, etc.), who really know their stuff and own like half the products put out by each company (or have tried them).

In general though, I should throw out there that CodySG is fairly intelligent and br00tal :p:

:haha
Only the MTS series though. I'm semi-inexperienced with the rest of their stuff (I know a bit, but not nearly as much as I do about the MTS... although there's so much more to know about the MTS that in comparison... MTS MTS MTS MTS... :haha) I'm also an ESP *****, as is CodySG, so we'll have both those covered too.

So I've got a nice guitar (ESP LTD M200FM), an even nicer amp (Engl Powerball), but my cabs suck balls (Fame GN412A).
So I'm in need of a good new one, I play in a Nightwish Coverband, Psychostick Coverband, 80s Hardrock/Metal coverband, and a Melodic Deathmetalish band. I do gig, and I'm not afraid to buy used.
I live in the Netherlands, and I could stretch my budget up to 1000 euros or more if needed, because I'd rather buy something good instead of buying something almost good twice.

I dunno if Mills Acoustic cabs ships to the Netherlands but look at them.
but if they dont go look for a Deizel 4x12 or just buy an ENGL Cab and invest your leftover money on a better guitar like an LTD 400/1000 series

EDIT:

Tubescreamer is to expensive for me as I won't being using it that much, also I like scooped mids which, apparently, isn't the tubescreamer's 'thing' and that they're slightly bumped.

So what's everyone's thoughts on the MXR Zakk Wylde overdrive?

ZW is like a modded DS1 as far as I know, but with more balls. And his mids are honkin in your face last time I checked ;)

I forgot ONE module on the list: The Modern! But I need to get a better idea of it, as it's kinda a sleeper hit for some people, and it's a good module to mod too. So after some research, be sure I'll add that to the list, although I think it's discontinued too...

EDIT: Yeah, it's discontinued. I added what I knew and could tell from clips so far.

It's basically a BOSS SD-1 (which is basically a TS9 with asymmetrical clipping) with a normal switch. The mids are quite in your face. That's much better of you're tightening up your tone though. The switches on mine and my friends kept going bad even after Dunlop replaced them so I would just get an SD-1.

I have some MAJOR GAS for a Splawn Quickrod right now. I really like the mid range and the smoother tone on rhythms on the Quickrod, but I also love my Blackmores massive crunch. They're both basically based on/hotrodded Marshalls, have that really nice creamy lead tone. Someone slap me out of my GAS. NOW.

There is no cure for GAS, so ill just add a little fuel to the fire
