I was gunna put this in a different forum, but all the people like scheck, Goverman, Big Sur Moon, and all you other bastards that rule at Powertab end up reading here... so....

What I was wondering is is there an online guide on how to use powertab... I've figured out some on my own, but I really wanna learn how to insert "let rings" and fades and crap like that that I cant do now for some reason... If someone could either give me some tips on how to use Powertab or direct me to an online guide, your help would be GREATLY appreciated...

thanks-- a UG noob in distress

hey, where do you live in colorado springs?

anyhoo, you have to hit the button that looks like a sideways V,
to the right of the fade button and then you choose starting and ending volume.

thanks, but now I have another question after screwing around with PTB for awhile...

How do you get 2 parts to play in unison... I figured out how to use 2 seperate guitars to play the parts, but not how to play them in unison... please help me...

scheck006
07-10-2004, 08:38 PM
like a harmony part?

you need to make 2 staffs in one section

so

gtr 1
-------------------------------------------------

gtr 2
--------------------------------------------------

then you need to put guitar ins on both staffs

you add a guitar in by going to the guitar menu

if you only have one guitar, then you make another one by going to setup on the same menu and clicking the red guitar

if you just want 2 guitars to play the same thing,

add 2 guitar ins, just on the same space

gtrs 1, 2
-------------------------------------------------------

Ok I think I understand... I inserted a whole new section... not a staff... cuz I'm a full and complete retard... Also, I'm not very good with music period, So if someone with a kind heart wants to explain to me the simple way to understand what a time signature means... like I understand beats per measure, but I don't really get what the other number tells you... so please help... I've been playing guitar for 9 months and I don't know this... I'm screwed :)

noodles_wazaman
07-10-2004, 08:47 PM
Well, i understand it but can't exactly explain it. My best guess would be to check musicians talk and post a question about it in there. there are plenty of knowledgable guys who will explain it thoroughly for ya there.

My other guess would be to get guitar lessons just for a while. I didn't think I needed lessons but my parents made me and it actually helped me out a lot. Just enough to get a basic introduction to reading music, scales and soloing etc, is all you need, i'm not suggesting you follow them religiously, but if you can find a decent teacher than it'd be worthwhile.

MadMudgeN
07-10-2004, 08:50 PM
yeah, I've been thinking about that, but most of the teachers that I've looked into have seen like the really gay kind that take crap way too slow so they can milk you for your $$ you know? but yea, I really need to learn some theory, I know some, like some scales and crap... but I want to be like Deftone, knowing more than I ever need to :)

SilentDeftone
07-10-2004, 09:10 PM
Ah? the time signature question :)

The top number is how many beats in a measure; you know that already apparently. The bottom number is what value note it is. Most of the time this will be a 4, representing that each quarter note = 1 beat. Sometimes you'll see 8, meaning each eighth note is 1 beat. The only numbers you'll see on the bottom are 2, 4, 8, and 16. It's possible for it to be 32, 64, and on and on but seriously, who conducts 32nd notes?

Sometimes you'll see odd time signatures such as 17/16, which means 17 sixteenth notes per measure.

Hope this covers it :D

ermmm... thanks... also if anyone can tell me how to do "let ring" thingys on Powertab it would be greatly appreciated....!

scheck006
07-10-2004, 09:13 PM
its fine

hey man look at this

scheck006
07-10-2004, 09:16 PM
and let rings, you just take the notes that you want to let ring, and then push the let ring button.

if you are talking about tying notes, you just push "y"

or the button with two notes and a line between them on it.

MadMudgeN
07-10-2004, 09:28 PM
where is the let ring button... I looked next to the volume swell, the dynamic, underneath where all the hammer-on/pulloff business is.... help me I'm a retard...

scheck006
07-10-2004, 09:35 PM
its on the bottom in the middle. it says "let ring"

I have another question... how do you do mutes... not palm mutes... but like in regular tab when you put x's on the strings... I tried hitting x and it doesn't work so please help me...

In case you don't understand, I'm asking how to do this in PTB:

e----
B----
G----
D-x--
A-x--
E-x--

scheck006
07-12-2004, 12:50 PM
um, you put your hand over the strings...

jk

there's a button on the bottom right that has an X note on it. you select the note with the blue curser and then push the botton in. the note will change to a mute note.

MadMudgeN
07-12-2004, 06:48 PM
this one isn't powertab related at all, but I know I'd get hell for asking it... what string is the root on of the powerchord that I and everyone else overuses... I mean this type...

e-------------
B-------------
G-------------
D---5--------
A---5--------
E---3--------

MadMudgeN
07-12-2004, 06:53 PM
Oh, hey scheck, you asked awhile back and I just now read it... I live in Peregrine... up north, west of I-25 in case you don't know where that is... :)

scheck006
07-12-2004, 07:48 PM
the root is on the E and D strings.

the fifth is the note above that on the A string.

Just pressing x does work.

You have to press x with the note you want to mute selected (i.e. click on it).

another question... I'm using ****ty ass winzip v 7.0 and it doesn't want to let me zip the powertab file that I want to post on the forums so you all can make fun of me... so if someone can post a winzip that I can download in here or help me with it on 7.0 please do... I want you all to hear my ****ty intro...

scheck006
07-14-2004, 08:25 AM
try right clicking on the file you want to zip, then click send to...and then there should be a "compressed folder" option.

I don't know what window's you have and which version it doesn't do it on, but try it.

No, but after reading every freakin' post in here (its a mod's life... lol) I find the idea very intriguing to say the least.

I write sheet music (notation) for a number of small things. I make a few $$ on the side writing and/or recording backing music for local television commercials. I make anywhere from 6 to 10 - 30 second songs a year and I even get referrals, so it all works out fairly well.

Anyway, I just thought that PTab seems like another tool that I might have a use for. I suppose that I'll be downloading it and seeing what its like. From what I'm reading... its not like notation, where you can write codas or fortissmo... whatever... but you get "button" controls to change things around.

Can you control songs in PTab down to such a fine line... just as I can when I'm writing?

scheck006
07-15-2004, 10:51 AM
you add the notes in tab, but it also places the notes in standard notation above. It takes a while to figure out, but it has everything a keyboard composing program does. All the musical direction, codas, D.S, D.C etc...

You can change time signatures quite easily, tempo is pretty simple too. Dynamics are a little wierd, so I tend not to use them a whole lot...I don't think it matters much in powertab, i mainly just make everything audible...As well as that, its got the guitar related stuff, like slides, harmonics and taps...

I think it'd be best for you to just download it and try it out...I mean, worst comes to worse...you don't like it and you delete it?

Right click on the desktop, go to New, click WinZip file.

Then, right click on what you want to zip, go to WinZip, and click 'Add to Zip file'.

scheck006
08-05-2004, 08:24 PM
or if you don't have winzip...go to my computer...go to where the powertab file is...right click in the blank space, then select "new" then select compressed folder" then you drag the powertab file into the new compressed folder and then you attach the compressed folder to your thread here at UG.

thanks

i3lackmagik

You need to add a rest.

Look on the bottom right of the program. If you don't know what a rest looks like, it's " '/ "

i3lackmagik
08-16-2004, 08:53 PM
If you are familiar with reading music...

Select where on the tab you want to add a repeat sign and click the button with the vertical line. Then add the repeat sign.

You need it add one at the beginning of the section you want to repeat and one at the end.

I have another way to do drums. It's up to you which sounds better.

Mine were made using a muted Slap Bass 1 for the bass drum and toms, and a Woodblock + Melodic Tom for the snare. There is no good way to put cymbals in. Make sure to tune all those instruments an octave higher if you're putting them in the bass clef. The advantage of doing them this way is that you can hear a very clear difference between each drum, and they sound similar to the real instruments.

Here's an example.

Try doing what Weebl said, and if that doesn't work check the entire tab and see if anywhere else there is that sign. Change them accordingly.

~i3~

Grovermans
09-04-2004, 09:30 PM
Weebl - You don't have to go to the top. If you just want to do that for a solo, just do it in front of the solo.

Add a fade in just for a second. Do like a 100 Fade in, and then it should work. The MIDI sound has just been turned off, probably.

1st of all, read the FAQ.

2nd of all, yes it is a computer program, and it lets you tab songs and play them back. To get it, go to Here (http://power-tab.net).

i3lackmagik
09-29-2004, 05:08 PM
Rhythm slashes are used to notate chords when you don't want to type in bar after bar of them. You should use them when an instrument's part is all or mostly chords. Just select one of the notes in the rhythm slash menu (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v450/i3lackmagik/rs.jpg) and click it, the note you selected should appear on top of the staff. You can also insert rests, as shown.

In order to select a chord, click on http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v450/i3lackmagik/chord.jpg and do your thing. Then, to make an instrument play the rhythm slash, add a Gtr. In and choose "RS".

For strumming, use the http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v450/i3lackmagik/strum.jpg buttons. The 'V' is upstroke, the '|_|' is downstroke. Select the chord you want to specify strumming and click the appropriate button.

Try posting the file that has the rhythm problem. There could be alot of things wrong.

k thanks weebl - another question, say i have a great intro, followed by verse and chorus and then i wanna play the intro again, how do i get it to play the intro without actually retabbing it?
Also is their any way that i can play 3 bars of ie. a chorus the same way and then for the final bar play alternate notes without having to type the whole thing out?

mattutaylor
10-16-2004, 07:18 AM
I dont understand how to use the alternate ending thing... any chance if when you got 5 minutes u could create a ptab lesson on it weebl? i no u r great with powertab

Also, how can u set something just to carry on repeating throughout a section, so that it doesnt make whatever is in the adjacent staff repeat itself aswell? Ie. my attached file, the solo at the bottom i have had to do it all manually but the problem is that one staff has to wait for the other to catch up. How do you make it so that whichever is ahead will just continue to play?

...ok, i'm trying to figure out how to put in vocals into my powertab scores, i mean, an instrument that will imitate singing

i can put them at the right tones, then put in the words below, it would just make it that much easier for my vocalist to figure out how it's supposed to be sung without us spending a couple of hours getting it down

...and also for screaming, at first i was thinking something like a distorted guitar, but then it just turns out sounding like another instrument, instead of some kind of ghetto-midi-screaming (like what i was expecting:D)

yep, i have no idea...

Sometimes Powertab suddenly goes silent in the middle of a MIDI playback, then sometimes it says something like "MS error - restart program" - is this normal? Also, is there any way to remove the TAB staff (not the score part)?

Alright guys, I'm finally gettin back into powertab...

I just got one question:
I read the thing aboud drums and whatnot, but I can't find a way to add bass in... I realize you can select a bass guitar, many actually, on the guitar selection screen, but it wont let me use it as a veritable guitar in... so how do i do bass?

Also, once I get bass and drum tabs written, how can I get them to play in unison with my guitar sections? Because on many of Weebl's and Grovermans tabs, I never see tabbed out bass or drum pieces, but they're always in there.

Help me :)

I think you just have a different amount of notes than you do aat the top. Check to make sure all the notes add up to the same thing.

Hi guys.. Yep Im new too. Must congratulate so many people with their patience on this board, and this thread particulary.

Anyway, here I was wandering around Tabs and decided Id have a look in the forums. I happened to open this thread and discovered PTab.

STOKED!!

(but theres always a but)

Sure, sure I d/l the program, and started writing some ditties just for fun. Now I can read tabs and i can read notes from notation, but when it comes to the nitty gritty, Im lost.

I have attached my first try, and while its pretty ordinary, I think the advanced users may be able to give me hints where Im coming undone.

*If I add a new staff to a section, it seems if I want to play over my 'rythym' staff, my 'lead' can cut out whats happening in the 'rythym' staff. Hope that makes sense.

Ive also d/l a help file that was in the 1st few posts of this thread, but that doesnt work.

Im also having trouble repeating sections, and as you can see from my attached file, my bars are all over the shop.

If anyone could offer me any advice on these couple of points, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Feriss.

I didn't hear any problems with the playback like you said, it could just be your soundcard or something. In all the places with two parts simutaneously the voices were different anyway.

But your measures lines are a problem, the best way to remedy that would be to learn how bars are used in music, but for now just know that in order to make a section repeat you need to put the ||: and :|| bars around your section (the ||: at the beginning and the :|| at the end).

The score checker is a handy tool for finding where measure lines should be. It's the button with the green check mark on it.

Is there a way of burning the extracted MIDI from a powertab file onto an audio CD so that you can listen to it on a stereo or mp3 player?

Grovermans
12-27-2004, 12:05 AM
You have to get a MIDI to MP3 program to transfer it from MIDI to MP3.

i3lackmagik
12-27-2004, 05:39 AM
With Audacity, you can open the midi (File/Open) and then export the file as an MP3. Then burn the MP3 on a CD.

You can also open a program like Sound Recorder or Creative Recorder and click record, then play the midi file. Stop the recording when the midi is done. Then you'll have a wav, which is easy to convert to mp3.

You need to add repeat bars at the beginning and end of the section you want to repeat.

In order to have two parts at once, you need to have a Gtr. In for each staff. So click on the red guitar button (upper right) and add a new guitar. Then click the Gtr. In button (upper right) and specify the new guitar for the second staff.

i3lackmagik

In order to have two guitars at once you need to have the two staves attached to eachother. Select the staff that you want to have two guitars at once on, and click the button that has two staffs on top of eachother attached by a line

|==|
|==|

Then just write the second part on the new attached staff.

As far as 'let ring' goes, that button is for when you want to let two or more strings at once ring out, for example when you are playing arpeggios. To make a note last longer, change it's duration. You are probably entering in eighth notes, so make the note a quarter, half, or whole, depending on how long you want it to hold.

Not sure what you mena by rev. guitar, but if you want to tab a 12 string part, you have to have one standard guitar stave with a staff attached with the octave strings on it, or you can do nashville tuning (strings E-G tuned up one octave)

Er, what's the difference between a rest and a rest in the low melody?

Grovermans
03-13-2005, 02:17 PM
A high melody rest puts a res in the regular melody, but if you decide to put in a low melody, a low melody rest puts it in the low melody.

If you don't know the difference, just put in high melody rests and forget about the low melody stuff completely.

Grovermans
03-27-2005, 11:32 PM
It's probably because for one of them, you have Q = 165, and then Q. = 160. Q is Quarter Note, and Q. is Quarter Note Dotted.

wireless89
03-28-2005, 12:45 PM

than you have to be sure that the bass parts are syncrome with the measures you want them in. so if you want a bass with a guitarriff in measure 38, the bass must be in measure 38 too.

if that isnt it i dont know

www.powertabs.net has the widest selection of tabs, or you create your own... one of the two is necesary before you will actually be able to hear anything.

The best way is just to make loads of dead/muted notes that progressively go down in fret number before you hit the X button to make them so.

So you'd write 21-20-19-18-17.. etc and then go back and make them all muted, add slides between.

It sounds pretty ****ty, but its the best you can do I think.

Use a guitar patch like the Guitar Harmonics or something too, that adds to the feel. But it definately doesn't sound too good at all.

I know theres an option to put a copyright protection notice on your pt if you print it out

but can you get a copyright protection on it so that if someone imported it to their PT from a midi file they would see it?

I doubt it. You should stop worrying so much about it though, if someone steals your riff and gets famous with it, then you care.. if they steal it and use it for their band who are 2000 miles away and you'll never have any contact with then oh well, who cares.

Does anyone know how to make the musical notation staff disappear (so only the tablature is showing la Guitar Pro)?

You can't. No way, no how.

Do the above and make every note tremolo picked. It will make the slide stand out more if you do notes on more than one string.

I want to add another, but I can't delete the three that I don't use - the program freezes when I try. And I can't add another as you can only have seven.

Anyone help?

I'm guessing that the instruments go something like Guitar, Guitar, Keyboard, Trumpet, Guitar and you want to delete the Keyboard and Trumpet. You'll have to delete the last guitar first. What I mean is that if you try to delete anything but the last instrument on either the guitar or bass scores, it will crash for some reason.

It's kind of a pain in the ass, but you'll just have to remake all the instruments and probably redo the Gtr. In signs. Either that or just change the instruments in question to the ones you want to add.

Yeh, attach a new staff, set the Staff Type to 4 strings (by clicking on verticle TAB at the left of the staff). Then make a bass on the Guitar Setup, with 4 strings, and you're done.

I was wondering, is there anyway of downloading any more guitar midi sounds? Also, the reverb, chorus and tremelo doesn't make any difference when I adjust it? Is this because of the limitations of my sound card?

For new midi sounds I'm pretty sure you need something called soundfonts. There's some info here http://forum.powertabs.net/viewtopic.php?t=7238&highlight=soundfonts. I don't know much about them.

When I write a song, and try to put it in there, I never know what time signiture to use. How do you know? If anybody has any advice, please tell me.

Knowing the time signature is more of a basic music question than a Powertab question. There's not really a tool in powertab for that. You'll need to learn to count rhythms, which is very useful for Powertab since you have to enter the rhythm as opposed to just ASCII tabs.

Try it in 4/4, work out all the note values, and then see whether it fits into the bar, or whether its too long/short of a melody too.

If the bar contains two extra 8th notes for instance, then that bar should be in 5/4, not 4/4. If it's missing 1/4 note, then its in 3/4, or 6/8, but thats down to your judgement on the accenting.

i find the basic rule is to make your riff or section fit into 1 or 2 bars, not halfway through one...

so if you have a riff thats 6 chrochets long, it will fit in 1 & 1/2 4/4 bars, but will fit perfectly into 2 3/4 or one 6/4 or 12/8 bar :)

A question that goes with this is: how do you know when to use 6/4 and 12/8, sam for things like 3/4 and 6/8 (although thats not used much) and 5/4 and 10/8?

Danny7

10/8 is the most rarely used out of all of those.

Basically, 3/4, if you spoke out the accents would be

One, two, three, One, two, three...

6/8 would be

One, two, three, Four, five, six..

So it comes down to where you think the strongest accents fall. A "Left, Right, Left, Right, Left Right" March is in 2/2, or 2/4 time, not 4/4 time because the accents are just One, Two, One, Two...
