Once the duels have started I can't add any more entrants!

Basic rules (feel free to discuss!):
1. Tracks must be blues orientated.
2. Minimum track length of 1 minute.
2a. Originals and covers both allowed.
2b. Backing tracks are also allowed.
3. All instruments including vocals are allowed, but should feature a guitar!
4. New (or previously unused) tracks to be entered for each round of duels.
5. Submit your tracks by PM to me or in the Blues Duel III thread.
6. ADVICE: record your tracks well before your duel. Late track entries hold the duels up and will annoy everyone.
7. Late entries will forfeit the duel, giving the other dueller a win.
8. In the event of a draw, both duellers go through (the final would be re-duelled).

This blues duel will allow entrants that lose in the opening round to get a second chance. It would be advisable to record more than one or two tracks so you are all set for the opening rounds.

Enjoy it! It's fantastic to get feedback on the tracks that get entered in these duels and it's always good to hear what everyone comes up with!

Any questions or suggestions, just say!

Happy duelling!

I'm in, when do they start?

Depending on how many are signed up, should be starting within a few weeks. I'll hand out the date shortly. Worth starting to record as soon as possible though!

It sounds rather over-organised but I may draw up a timetable so people can see how long this will take.

Ideally I'd like to have entire rounds happen all at once, but if there are to many that it clogs the blues/jazz forum up with duels threads in the opening rounds, I will stagger them over a couple more weeks. Should be ok though!

I've also got a reasonably fair way of structuring the whole duels. I've created an illustrated blog HERE (http://profile.ultimate-guitar.com/strawforest007/blog/). I hope it proves to be more help than confusion!!

Cheers!

Please read the rules. Covers and originals allowed.

how many tracks must we propose or have in reserve to be able to finish the duel ?

1 track per round. If you get to the final you'll have recorded at least 5 or 6 tracks. Before each round everyone has two weeks to record for the next round. It's always an idea to record as soon as you can and have tracks in reserve.

good times.. throwing round some ideas hmmmm, might record a guitar part over a memphis slim instrumental

As long as the instrumental by 'Slim isn't a copyrighted piece. UG doesn't allow copyrighted music to be uploaded. My advice would be for you to use a blues backing track, many free ones are available on the internet!

one more thing, could you recall the rules of the duels ?
I've never done one before, who decides of the winners ? are there some votes ?

strawforest007
07-28-2009, 05:24 AM
Winners are decided by a poll (votes). Whoever has the most votes for that duel will go through to the next round. Anyone is allowed to vote and voting will be open for no more than a week for each duel.

If you lose in the first round, you get a second chance to get back in the competition, (a play-off which is better illustrated in my blog on my profile).
Lose in a later round then you're out. Simple elimination each round.

#1 - The first rule of Blues Duels is, you do not talk about Blues Duels.

#2 - The second rule of Blues Duels is, you DO NOT talk about Blues Duels.

#3 - If someone says stop, goes limp, taps out, the duel is over.

#4 - Two guys to a duel.

#5 - One duel at a time.

#6 - No shredding, no makeup.

#7 - Duels will go on for a week or so. Ask strawforest007.

#8 - If this is your first night at Blues Duels, you have to duel.

One quick question: when does this start, when all the slots are full, or after a certain date? and could you PM me when they start?

The sign-ups will be open until Sunday 9th August.

From then, everyone will have two weeks to record and enter one track for their first duel. All first round tracks will need to be submitted by Sunday 23rd August.

Everyone that is signed-up will recieve a wonderful PM from me reminding you of when you need things done by.

Post a link to your track (or just say the name of the track in your profile) into this thread, or send me a message. Don't open a new thread. If everyone did this, it would clutter the forum.

Once all the tracks have been submitted (by Sunday 23rd August!!), then I will open a new thread for each duel, which I have to do for the poll (voting) to work. You'll get the swing of it pretty quickly.

Cheers!

No maximum length, but it's advisable to keep it below 8 minutes. But it's up to you.

I'll sign you up, but you need to have a track recorded by Sunday 23rd August, as does everyone else. So everyone signed up already has got 3 weeks to submit a track. As I say in the rules, not submitting on or before the deadline will forfeit the duel and you'll automatically lose. Harsh, but the duels will get held up constantly if people don't stick to it.

Other than that, welcome!

I've been trying to lay a track down everyday. I should be posting it by Monday. Whenever I record I listen to the playback and think "Is that really what I sound like?". The tone is not as thick, some notes end up really quiet and the phrasing sucks (the last one is clearly not the recording device). Does anyone else have that problem? I don't know whether it just sounds better in my head or it sounds different through the recording.

Jimmy94
08-12-2009, 03:29 PM
Just like with singing or when you hear a recording of your voice it always sounds different when you listen to a recording of your playing. I get hyper critical and throw away dozens of takes that are probably fine but aren't just exactly perfect. You're likely going to be your own worst critic.

On the other hand recording is very tricky and it is difficult to get it sounding the way you want to. Even a well recorded guitar track can still be missing the urgency, get in your face quality that you hear playing live. Try getting your ear right next to your amp, it's going to sound different down where the microphone is compared to where your ears are when you play.

I think it's hard for me to record to a backing track on some headphones down in my basement. When we're out at a jam I think there's definitly a sense of urgency and more of a driving force behind what your playing. Maybe I need to try to replicate those cirumstances somehow. Plus, as you know, my amp is pretty heavy. Maybe I'll just move the microphone to were my ear is at. That's probably easier. LOL

I know exactly what you mean! This is my first time trying to record electric. I'm having to use a JamVOX, which isn't ideal but it's all I have to record at home. I'll hopefully have something by the weekend but my hopes aren't high on it being any good!

Sometimes it is the opposite with me, I think "man that was sucky." but then I listen to the track and realize that I did not mes up like I though I did.

But I think every artist goes through this at some time or another.

Everyone here will have the same problem. The more recording you do the more ways you find to eliminate the poorer sounds. There's so much that can go wrong when recording that it's very difficult for the resulting track to sound anything like what you recorded, particularly with tone. I say 'wrong', it's just the way it is.

My only advice is to not be over-fussy with recording. Many of us realise and expect a few issues with tracks (background noise, hum, poor mixing and EQ etc). You're much better off with those problems in a well-played track than a perfectly mixed but lamely played guitar piece. As long as everyone can get the gist of the track, don't worry. Decent mixing is great, but not essential!

The laptop mic sucks, and my playing is too over the top, tried making it enjoyable in too many ways instead of just chilling out and jamming.

Tbh, the only reason I did more takes, was that it was a bit out of tune, and I forgot to put the capo on from the beggining...lol yea - right key tends to help :haha: Just listened to yours - sounds good dude

Layering 3 guitars without editing may just end up sounding a bit of a mess, unless you're playing them at strategic points in the overall track but it would be simpler to do all the takes and then edit.

I really like the spirit of those choosing to record the solo track in one take and not editing or dubbing extra bits in, but anything is allowed. Of course there is a natural layering of playing over a backing (or your own backing) anyway.

No rules against editing tracks, but doing as little as you can. The raw/live feel is preferred among the duellers, 'mistakes' and everything included.

This is after all a blues duel, so just imagine your on a small stage in a blues bar backed by the house band and someone plugs in your guitar and you have a couple of minutes to play your blues...

Word.

I just don't like overprocessed blues, it's got to be raw and authentic. Which is hard to do by yourself. I feel like I did allright on this one though.
But, still. I miss dynamics. Being able to bring the band down to something that is merely a whisper. Keeping them on a tight leash and just build it up till the whole band just explodes...

I can't till my gig tomorrow now. :haha

Thanks Zhilla, yours was good aswell man. Sounds a bit less jammy than most, which is well done. :D

You guys know any good 'idiot guides' to editing please (not so much for blues duels, but just for general use)?

Recorded on my laptop :haha

Very sloppy, but. Hey. That's the blues for ya...

The laptop mic sucks, and my playing is too over the top, tried making it enjoyable in too many ways instead of just chilling out and jamming.

Also, it's all one take, (Second or third, can't quite remember) no editing out mistakes. (Shouldn't be allowed in a blues contest :p: )
Agreed I record my entire guitar track in one take on my track.

I recorded and uploaded my first submission today, here it is
http://profile.ultimate-guitar.com/nico42/music/

Guitars and bass are played by me, drums by Addictive Drums. I needed some takes for the solo but I didn't do any further editing, chopping, overdubbing etc so I guess it's raw enough.

Good luck to everyone!

First of all, great work by all of you in the first round. In my opinion, "Tush" was most impressive but there are many great tracks.

Because one critic to my track was, that it is no classic blues, I'm thinking about what to play in the next round, now.
How important is the guitar for you??
I may try Ornithology or Confirmation by Charlie Parker on Saxophone; but, honestly, Bebop is more Jazz. And there would just be the backing track played by guitar and maybe one chorus in the solos.
Another track I'm thinking about is "Green Onions" by Booker T. Wanted to play this for the first round but didn't fininished it til the start. Would be a mixture of guitar and saxophone, too. It's Jazz/Blues/Funk so that would fit.
My last idea would be some Rocknroll classic (maybe some Elvis), that would be good in every case but it's what everyone is doing.

Some recommendations/advices by you??

That would be awesome if you did charlie parker. Why dont you solo on sax and on guitar? Or you could do some "blues jazz" and stick with theme more, maybe play nows the time or blues for alice.

So what? Nobody has said they're going to be the next BB King. If your ears are offended then I don't see the point in posting about it, it doesn't help anyone so just don't click the threads. You gave me some good advice on my track, which I appreciate, but sweeping comments like that aren't necessary.

I'd be the first person to admit there are far better electric blues players on here than me. I'm fairly new to playing electric blues and I'm still learning and I'm just trying to use this as a learning experience for myself, not to prove that I'm "better" than anyone else.

strawforest007
08-24-2009, 07:50 PM
The aim of these duels is for everyone to learn new things, whether it be actual guitar playing, styles, licks, riffs, recording/mixing or anything like that. For sure it's going to be a mixed bag of talent which is brilliant. Just imagine the problems we'd have if every track was incredible. No-one would learn anything for a start. The mix of styles is super too as round 1 has already shown up - blues can be many things and one thing at the same time.

The 'competition' is there just to pull everyone together for a bit of fun and so we can all enjoy each others feedback. There's no real 'prize' it's all for pride. It's working really well so far i have to say. I'm hoping people don't lose interest as the duels go through the rounds and that even those that go out at the earlier stages still pop back to listen and comment on others' tracks.

Hopefully everyone's next tracks will have as many nice suprises as these ones!

Agreed. I think what I like most about the duels is getting some feedback on stuff I've recorded. There's no prize for winning. Whether I win or lose, I still learn some stuff and meet some people. Good deal.

Now now, don't put words in my mouth bro. I never said I expected a pro level entry from everyone, and if you notice I did listened to a voted on every duel, trying to give good reasons/tips or whatever on each entry. I'm of your opinion that this is a good learning experience, and by no means a head to head scrap. It's just a good competition that gets people recording and trying to improve

I made no sweeping comments. I call a spade a spade, and some of the tracks WERE hard to listen to, I don't need to sugar coat it for anyone, people have ears, and I'm in no way pointing and loling at bad tracks. I wholeheartedly support the efforts of ANYONE trying to learn and improve themselves as a blues player.

So chill :]

What happens if a duel result is fiftee-fiftee ?

Don't worry Zhilla, we love you (the only girl among us). Blues is not only a matter of practice, I mean you do not have to be technicaly perfect or complicated (leave this to Jazz), the soul must come through your playing.

Just worth me asking everyone here; is everyone happy with the pace the duels are going at? At the current rate as it's all mapped out, the final will be in early/mid November. If everyone would prefer the duels to go more quickly (by giving everyone only a week to record after the voting) then shout out. I could also shorten the length of time the voting is open for as it seems everyone places votes in the first 2 or 3 days.

The reason I ask is to stop any duellers from simply disappearing because it may seem like a slow process... although I wouldn't want the duels rushed. Any ideas?

shark38j
08-27-2009, 02:53 PM
I think you need to leave the duelers time to record, but it may help to shorten the voting time. I noticed our duel is starting to fade out with the voting. I'm not sure it needs to be up for a week.

I like the pacing of the rounds as it is. I work full time and have other commitments which means I can't be recording all day every day. At the minute I have to actually set time aside to look at recording. I've been toying with an idea for my next track, I'm quite excited to get it recorded!

I think the spacing is quite nice, blues is supposed to be honest and emotional, which would be hard to sustain if you had to record 3 songs a week. Especially if you try to write your own songs a tighter schedule might get frustrating.
This way it'll go on a good while(=longer lasting fun), it's relaxed and not too slow.

My play off track should be ready this afternoon. I've tried to do something a bit different, I'm not just doing a 12 bar jam/cover like last time (that's why it's taking a while to do!)

Don't feel bad, I had to rush mine too. We have been having MAJOR power issues where I live, so a recording session more than a 45 minutes to an hour long is doomed to be ruined by a power outage. There is a small chance I can redo it on my day off tommorow but things are not lookin positive.

I just don't feel as good about this track as my last one. It seems unfocused or something. Maybe my phrasing was off? Plus it seems to sound different than before I uploaded it, but that is probably because I find it a good idea to record something, and then listen to it 4 or 5 days later to get a good judge of teh track. I didn't have the oppurtunity to do this. Go easy on me guys

That being said I like this because it gives me an insight to what recording is like for real. The pressure of a deadline, the unnessacary and necssacary worrying asscociated with wondering how the others are coming along.

a trilby, nice!

I might not be able to get one up, due to the fact that I don't currently have amps on me, other than my DA5. Will it work? Yes. Will it be pretty? No.

Please think of the effort your opponent is putting in before simply opting-out of the duels. I appreciate it takes time and thought to create a track but the duels will fall apart without duellers! Don't forget the track only needs to be a minute long (if that helps?!).

I did advise before the duels started for duellers to have tracks in hand as we all get too busy from time to time. (Jazzman91 for example gave me 3 tracks in advance as they've gone away for a few weeks). It would be disappointing for all the duellers if one or more duellers fail to submit anything. I personally don't want the duels to become a farce.

But maybe I just take this all too seriously.

Thanks to all those who have submitted so far (6 out of 16 so far with less than a day to go)....

Just listened to Bluestube's recording: Gotta say, this is going to be a really close one. Gonna boil down to what the voters are feeling at the moment they listen to it, since his and mine are so different.

I'm a little confused. I've looked at the poll on my duel and there are 2 votes on it (both for my opponent, which is fine) but when I go into my profile, my tune says no-one has listened to it? Does it not register if you use the links in the forums or something?

strawforest007
09-13-2009, 03:51 PM
I don't know. There's seems to be errors in the mp3 hit count, especially since the new 'custom order' (where you can change the order of your mp3's listed on your profile) has been introduced. You may also notice a difference in the number of plays if you look at the same track in your profile and in your 'all mp3's' page. It's a strange one.

I just noticed that we currently have 7 duels, which makes me wonder how the next round will be like - threesomes? just hope for more people to drop out? another play-off to make it 8?

There will be one 3-way duel (top two go through) to compensate in the next round. It'll be easier than doing another play-off. I really don't want anymore drop-outs and the last play-off only seemed to encourage it! A 7-way play-off for only 1 to go through also seems a bit tough on those that don't make it (for the sake of time and effort etc).

Who the 3-way will be between will be decided by random draw from the winners.

Ok guys , let me shoot first !

Here is my tune for the last turn: "Don't shoot me baby"
http://profile.ultimate-guitar.com/salmon+philippe/music/play721541

I wrote this specialy for you if you can call that stuff a composition, I guess it is more a sort of jam with myself. The acoustic guitar plays the rythm and I added three solos with different instruments other wise I would have played always the same things hehe...
first : Electric washburn with a little reverb
second: Harp in D
third: Electric Godin "Solidac" with crunch

At the same time , I am working and recording with a harpist (he plays better than me) some classical blues, and we'll be playing next month in a small restaurant place in south west of france...

Ok, even with all the crap that I went through this week (including being dumped) I still managed to get all the parts done to my track. Barely though, I was tweaking the drum track and the midi keyboard part for hours. I am tired of hearing them almost.

One guitar is my classic Les Paul lead, the other one is layed down with my crappy Strat. The drums were programmed mostly by my friend, but I tweaked it later. The "piano" is just a midi keyboard with some VST on it.

It is on my profile http://profile.ultimate-guitar.com/whitenihilist/
