Im on a 500 dollar budget i want a tube amp. I play thrash metal and some heavy metal like maiden. But mostly metallica, megadeth sepultura things like that. right now i only know about 2 tube amps under 500.. The B-52 at-112 and the peavy ValveKing 112 I dont know which one would be better for what i want to play. People have told me that the B-52 sounds really awesome with a metal zone mt-2 pedal but i really dont know. What do you guys think i should pick or is there another tube amp in that under 500 dollar range that would be even better for the thrash metal i want to play. The amp will be used for small gigs and for room practice. Thanks in advanced.

For that price I would go used. I would try to find a Peavey 6505 (5150), Or Get a bugera.
I personally do not like B 52s, it's like the second you crank em the distortion turns to poo. And The valveking even though it is a decent amp....I never felt the distortion was powerful enough.

Valveking is great for metal, you just have to eq it right and use a good distoriton pedal with a nice boost. If you listen to the stuff on my profile, most of it was done with my valveking and a boss DS-1 pedal with a tubscreamer as a boost.

Should do it with no problems.

If you don't mind going solid state, you could look at a Line6 Flexwave (or, if you're lucky), you could find a used Vetta.

The 212 sounds basiclly the same as the 112, its just the 212 is louder and has a presence and something else, cant remember right now. But the sound difference between them is not much.

Peavey 5105 is the way to go....I know that Jerry Cantrell uses one given to him by Eddie Van Halen, so you can crank some really heavy tunes out of it.

You can go to the valveking thread to find more information about the amp if you want. I would go and try one out before you go and composulively buy one. Theres alot of maintance involved with tube amps and it does get expensive.

the Valve king is basically a medium gain-high gain amp. it can do anything from clean-hard rock..you can get some good metal tunes out if it when eq'ed right and when useing the boost. to get real metal tones out of it you would need at least a OD pedal in front of the amp to boost the preamp harder. keep the drive on 0, level on full, and tone or eqs on the pedal to whatever you like.

but i would look used for that budget. can get a 5150 head or combo, Peavey Ultra, Jcm 900s, Mesa Nomad, or a Peavey XXX, Peavey VTM, Laney GH50L.

Around how often do you change the tubes on a Valveking for example. Ive never owned a tube amp so i wouldnt know. So the valveking would sound good with the mt-2? to get it to that thrashy tone?

I don't like the MT-2. However, there is the Keeley modded ones, always wanted to pick one up.

I think you should play the Valveking before you buy it. Again, VTM and MIG are JCM 800 clones, might be something to play with and see if you like.

Key words are 'play'.

The MT-2 won't improve the tone, it will destroy it. You may as well play some random crap amp and throw on the MT-2 for all the effect the original amp's tone will have on the resultant tone.

If you want to tighten up the amp and all that goodness that adds to the VK, add an overdrive :)

what pedal will give me that distortion i want for thrash metal?

tubes - maybe every other year.
some people swap new preamp tubes in right away for better tone.
some people swap new speakers in right away for better tone.
many use Bad Monkeys, Tubescreamers, Maxon ODs to tighten the distortion that's there already.
I don't know about the MT2 on there. Never tried one.
Play some other amps too so you get a feel for what's out there.
Check out the Valveking thread. Shouldn't be hard to find.

You might not NEED a pedal for your distortion but a OD/Boost will certainly help get the tight thrash tone :)
