I was looking to get into some of AFI's older stuff, e.g. Black Sails, Art of Drowning, Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes. (Or even their stuff before that if it's good)

Which would be the best album to get first to get into their older stuff?

And make sure you don't forget the All Hallows EP. Under any circumstances.

Agreed.

Amazing lyrics, incredible energy, great songwriting, no filler tracks.
The only fault I can find is the extreme similarity in verses between The Last Kiss and At a Glance, but they're both great songs, so I don't really care.

It depends what you listen to already though...
Shut Your Mouth and Black Sails are incredibly aggressive; Answer That and Very Proud of Ya are more straight up bay-area hardcore; Art of Drowning contains much more melodic songs.

That said though they're all very accessible. Get them all.

And make sure you don't forget the All Hallows EP. Under any circumstances.

Backed.

Also try to get the A Fire Inside EP if at all possible.

Isn't there a big AFI thread in the punk/ska forum?

Black Sails is incredible, and Very Proud of Ya is one of the only 20 song albums I can think of where there are very few fillers.

even The Weight of Words which is a B-Side album is great start to finish. i wish this band didn't make shitty music now. listened to the new album after my friend told me it was good, i like one or two songs but thats about it. the rest sucked

Is it weird that one of the songs I liked least on it was "Sacrilege", the one where they actually try to make a punk song?

That's actually the song that got me into old AFI thanks to THPS3. I pretty much shat bricks the day I realized they were the same band that released StS.
