Not sure if a thread like this already exists, I searched and didn't find anything.

But who are some of your guys's favorite punk song writers? Top 3, top 5, whatever.

1. Matt Skiba. (If I'm allowed to count that in as punk)
2. Tim Armstrong.
3. Shane MacGowan.

Fat Mike, Really?

Well, I did say your favorite, not best.

Why Fat Mike?

Dee Dee Ramone
Strummer and Jones
Danzig

Tim Armstrong and Matt Skiba are pretty good. But Dan from A3 is also very good.

I like some of Nick 13's stuff too, but it's not very consistent.

Richard Hell, Joe Strummer & John Doe.
Mike Watt & D. Boon.
Joey & Dee Dee.
Blake Schwarzenbach.
Bob Mould & Grant Hart.
Clint Conely, Roger Miller, and Peter Prescott.
Patti Smith.

Those are the only PUNK songwriters that stick out to me. Non-punk songwriters that I love include Dax Riggs, Roky Erikson, and some others

No one asked about non-punk songwriters, otherwise I'd be name dropping Morrissey up in here.

I'm pretty sure it's Gurewitz.

But it could be Gurewicz.

Or Gorilla-Wits.

I can't believe no one has said Greg Graffin. He and Brett Gurewitz together write the best punk songs I've ever heard.

Greg Ginn
(Ok some of his lyrics were shitty when he started smoking loads of weed, but the riffs are solid)

Guy Piccotto
(Controversial viewpoint but I prefer a lot of his work to Mackaye's with Fugazi, and Rites Of Spring were awesome)

Also, stretching it a bit but Buzz Osbourne, because he can keep playing pretty simple riffs in an interesting way, and seems fully capable of banging out tune after tune.

BUT I kind of think that the end result of any band will be a group effort, so pinning the fact that you like a band on the skill of just one of it's members seems a little inaccurate to me. But those are guys I like a lot.

...You win.

Id just say Jones. I dont think Strummer was a very good lyricist...as much as i wish he is. Plus I think Mick could sing better.
