I put this in the Riffs and shit forum but got told to move it.
Alright, so for my band i've been trying to write a bunch of stuff and I've hit sort of a mental block. We wanna sound like Broadway, Burden of a Day, kinda sorta progressive nu metalcore. What're some chords and stuff I can use that fit this kind of music other than power chords? Also are there any cool modes/scales that I should employ to get a more unique sound?

Honestly, learn a few songs by bands you wanna sound like, and then try and write stuff. You'll have an expanded appreciation of the techniques involved, and the songs will be fresh in your head so you'll be less likely to just steal their riffs by mistake.

WIN!!!

But seriously as someone stated before learning songs by the band (even ones you are very crazy about will help you get the techniques and scales necessary to learn.

Its kinda like when they say, you are what you eat...in this case you are what you play.

As everyone has said, try to listen and learn from the bands you want to sound like. It also really helps to not restrict yourself to one style of playing so you can get a greater perspective of your instrument which you can in turn apply to your writing to make it more interesting. Don't be afraid to learn new more advanced techniques to expand writing possibilities.

I'm having a bunch of fun with diminished and melodic minor scales right now especially with a new sweeping pattern I discovered. :)

I'd probably recommend the opposite. Play a bunch of styles. Take parts you like from each.

Well if you want to sound like Burden of a Day just write generic open riffs then go to the 8th or 3rd fret for the chorus and use clean vocals

/joke

Yeah I'd agree with just learning songs by bands you want to sound like. By the way how did you get along with learning the stuff the guy in your band gave you? You know, the YouTube video you linked in a thread about it.

One of the riffs from it is stuck in my head, I keep "writing" then realising fucking Peter Pan beat me to it :p:

Ok so this is going to sound really counterproductive, but like someone else said, learn a bunch of songs by the bands you want to sound similar to, then write a bunch of songs that are just blatant rip offs of those bands. They'll sound good as shit, because they're blatant rip offs, but throw them away and write something else that's a little less of a rip off. Keep going until you've done something original that sounds good.

That sounds so bizarre, but that's probably how most people develop, just without realising it.

Yeah, it worked for me haha. Every time I've transitioned into writing a new type of music, this is how I did it. That said, I'm not the best at writing music, so take my advice with a grain of salt, I suppose.

I like to sit in front of my amp and just keep plucking away at different chords for hours until I finally come up with a riff that I like. Then I base an entire song around said riff. I think that learning something by another band first is a bad idea because it inevitably leads to inadvertent plagiarism (albeit, usually to a minor degree, which I think almost all of us are guilty of). Using another band as inspiration is always nice though.
