Someone in my band that just started brought up the idea for the name "An Unwritten Theory". I'm not the biggest fan of it, but I think it's kinda catchy.

What do you think?

Pretty cool, what kind of band is it for?

And what do you think of 'The Dawn of a New Era' for a melodeath band?

It's for a metal band. And I think I might have heard that name before, but it' pretty solid.

Dandaman, it's an okay name, I think. I'd keep looking just in case, but 21st Century is an okay name.

Jwax: I don't know why, and it's probably taken, but all I can think of is MadCat. Probably because I'm looking at my cat's food box.

I have a name. How is Abdiel's Plea? Our band's seriously contemplating it. I made it up, and it's from my favorite character in the epic poem Paradise Lost.

How about Toxyn, something I came up with while thinking about replaced vowels in band names. I can see it fitting some sort of a Speed Metal or Thrash band

My band is a funk/punk/rock band. Our influences are Red Hot Chili Peppers, Led Zeppelin, and Jimi Hendrix.

A classic four peice band. Singer, drummer, guitar, and bass.

We want a name that is fun, sounds youthful, is energetic, and easy to remember.

I play in a four peice (soon to be 5) Post-Rock band, our music is in the direction of Godspeed you! black emperor, Mogwai, Explosions in the sky and a danish band called Lis er Stille (if anyone's heard of them?).
We're having a hard time coming up with an awesome name for our band...

So, can anyone come up with a (post-rock) name as awesome as any of the above, or, dare i say it, even awesomer?

thanks! :)

as i've been learning to sing i've been thinking of starting a side project so i can do something different from my band now and i've had some problems thinking of a name, the one's i've got so far are

1) Vintage Suits
2) Classic Killers
3) She's Into Parties

or if anybody's got some ideas, its just a simple rock band

as i've been learning to sing i've been thinking of starting a side project so i can do something different from my band now and i've had some problems thinking of a name, the one's i've got so far are

1) Vintage Suits This has an interesting ring to it, and I would probably remember it - makes me think of a sort of post-rock band.
2) Classic Killers This is fairly catchy, but overall a bit generic - I'd say it's got a punkish feel to it.
3) She's Into Parties No. Just no.

or if anybody's got some ideas, its just a simple rock band

Overall, I'd go with Vintage Killers.

Which idea is better for a roots rock band?

Celluloid Love or the London Dispersion Force?

Celluloid Love sounds like a more groovin' type band, and London Dispersion Force sounds almost like a Motley Crue-esque thing to me. Depends on what roots you're going to - 70s? 90s?

I play in a four peice (soon to be 5) Post-Rock band, our music is in the direction of Godspeed you! black emperor, Mogwai, Explosions in the sky and a danish band called Lis er Stille (if anyone's heard of them?).

Taxiduerrel - Thought of it when reading a book about exploding squirrels, it basically means stuffed squirrel. Not too good, but all that's hitting my mind right now...maybe Barking Up Ladders? All I got, man...

Does anyone think the name adversity o the name Taking Names is good for an altrock/ punk rock band?

Far too common; I bet there's a million bands with that name...sorry.

EDIT: http://searchservice.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=sitesearch.results&type=Music&qry=%22taking+names%22

Does anybody think that Fracture is a good band name.? We play mostly pop punk stuff.

Also rather common, but if you mixed it with something else you might get something better. IE: Fractured Facade or Paperthin Fractures, you get the idea. :)

Okay, now for YOUR opinion...what do you think of the name Major League Infidel for my side project? It's just going to be me, with optional vocals, probably a blend of the styles of post rock, metal and progressive.

Hey all, I've got a thrash band, just forming up, and we've got some name ideas that I'd like help deciding on.

Satan Shall Live Once More

Suicidal Innocence

When God Was Silenced

When Tomorrow Never Came

Breaking Innocence

As Memories Consume

The Devil's Cry

As Blood Stained The Walls

The Dead Have Spoken

As Religion Becomes Suicidal

Our Decay

Heaven's Plague

Which of these do you guys think would suit a thrash band best?

We're currently leaning more towards "The Dead Have Spoken"

My friend and I started a side project from our original band. We're making some electro-screamo-rap-experimental-hardcore music. Like BrokeNCYDE, but with guitar and not horrendously ****ty. We were think of naming it Faber Driving. Would that get our Asses sued? And what are some better, sillier names?

Try not to stick too many numbers in there, when choosing a name. people might tend to get a little confused. (Eg. "Wasn't it Floor 186? 681?")

Hey guys. Im in a punk/garage rock/ska-corish band and we are sort of nameless. The name our drummer, and close friend, really likes is "The Tripps' to me it sounds a little goofy especially considering we are like the total opposites of stoners. Hey guys,

Just thought of a name while watching TV: what do you think of something along the lines of Compliant Carnage??

I wasn't sure of both words beginning with a C, but i like the kind of oxymoron thing going on. Would it work for a Hard Rock band? If not with both beginning with C, how about something like Tender Carnage or Mellow Carnage?

And yes, for some reason i like the word carnage... :D

I need a band name for alternative/experimental rock type stuff but so far all we have is generic rock and metal names like 'Slither' and stuff like that. :p:

Influenced by Nirvana, a bit of blues stuff and various rock and metal bands. By metal i dont mean '****ing virgins with an axe, RAWR!!' type stuff but more like Megadeth and Iron Maiden.

Bit crazy huh?

So, yeah, we need suggestions. :)

All the others are kinda lame.

Um yeah, "attention" is prety ****ty by itself to be honest. Very rarely is one word good enough for a band name. You need to expand upon it to some point.

Speaking from my personal experience throwing out random names that sound cool is one of the best ways to get a name that has nothing to do with your own unique sound, if the name doesnt actually represent who you are as a band then whats the point? Wait for the right name to hit you like an epiphany...having said ALL that my current punk bands name is Wrath Riot LMAOOOOOOO *owns self*

Weird velvet underground, 60's type ****. It's named after the andy warhol film starring Edie Sedgwick.

Also for a completely different band, of more of a pearl jam esque sound, the name "Daughter"?

How about the name:

Abulian Maven

Not sure if abulian is a word but abulia (sounds like ab you lee uh) means an abnormal lack of the ability to make decisions. Maven means expert. I like it, but my band doesn't so anyone can use it if they like it. You should pm if you use it, it'd be cool if someone actually did. :)

Okay.
I've been messing around with some names and I took the advice of someone on here to search mythological terms.

"Cynosure" (sign-o-sure) is what I've arrived at.
Nowadays, it basically means anything that provides guidance.

If you've listened to "Currently Unnamed" on my Profile, help me out. Is this name suitable for what I'm playing?
If you haven't listened to it, go check it out please. THEN come back and help me out.

All help, grately appreciated! :D

I have two ideas for a bands name:
Your Eyes Opened
or
Crystal City

And in terms of music I'm talking about like, experimental. Like, basically a band that doesn't stick to one formula, a best example of the type of songs we'd make would be like System of a Down's Mezmerize album, a hybrid of songs that have their own personalities and don't sound the same.

I understand that, but i still find them to be slightly generic. People might see a bland name and expect it to reflect the music. I
m not saying it has to be some intense metal name like "zombie death slaughter house" or something to be good but when i hear the name im not sold, its important that it grabs people.

Disuade sounds cool, as does Blood & Sulphur. But do you want your band's abbreviation to be BS?

Something really simple for a band that plays stuff like Muse , Radiohead etc?

Gauged Penus would be a good grincore or deathcore band name

i can understand that you would want something better.
If it's grunge i can help you, i've been playing in grunge bands for like two years.
do you play early hardcore-punk-based grunge, like Mudhoney, Nirvana, or metal-based grunge, like Alice In Chains, or really technical, alternative rock grunge like Soundgarden or Pearl Jam?
grunge bands don't really have a common thing for name-selection, some of it's humor, some of it's irony, some of it's dark thoughts, some of it is just imagination. Let your mind wander, and you'll come up with something that you like, and something that also sounds good.

I've also just started a new grunge/post-grunge/alt.metal band, and we switch names often, as we've just started and we're still brainstorming. But we really liked the word Crisis, and we often went around it and we're thinking of Sundown Crisis, how does that sound? opinions would be appreciated, thank you :)

What do you guys think of the name Stormfront? Our band has pretty much decided that we're gonna use it, but I wanted your guys feedback. Were a hard-rock/alternative rock band.

I'm trying to decide between:
Crystal City
The Contortionist
Chaos Theory

I posted Crystal City in here before, and that's my favorite. But part of me is really leaning towards The Contortionist, because it's like, the only somewhat original name. Because Chaos Theory is a video game and Crystal City is a clothing brand from Johnny Whitney(The Blood Brothers/Jaguar Love)

Ryan Rage

I think you'd go farthest with The Contortionist. :D
If you don't use Crystal City, can I have it? For a song. It reminds me of this level in the Mario/Yoshi game for Gameboy Advanced that I liked alot when I was little.

ArcadianWarrior

Haha, I live in Austin texas and you live in Calgary, so even if I do use Crystal City, it's not like people would be like, "hey, that dude in Calgary already has that name".
And if you look on Myspace, there are multiple bands with the three names that I posted.
Basically, I think that the name only becomes "off limits" when the band becomes big. Like, anyone who names their band System of a Down or Radiohead is going to get punched in the face xp

I need help with a band name!

I was thinking Grand Theft Autumn, but that is the name of a song, so I didn't know if it were legal to use that name.

We are a Punk/"Emo" band with influences such as Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco, etc.

Ryan Rage

It's legal but I wouldn't use it because it's kind of like stealing some creativity.

And kudos for the bands you stated! I like those bands, too, but lots of people badmouth them around here.

i agree with the first part, it's not your own creativity.

but i don't see how you can listen to Nirvana, who were a grunge band who played for the music and expressing things through music rather than for the fame and money like FOB and such, but after all I guess it's a matter of personal taste.....

What do you think of "The Had" for a punk-rock trio? Lots of people I've asked think its stupid, but it makes sense because the word 'Had' comes from the first letter of each members name. Whatcha think?

what do you guys think of the name "Temple at Olympus" or "Stonehenge" for a progressive / power metal band?

Influences: Dream Theater, Symphony X, Circus Maximus, Dreamscape, Sonata Arctica, Queensryche, and Blind Guardian just to name a few.

Also influences like Al Di Meola and Pat Metheny as well as Steve Morse

I think the idea of something space-y is good for what your doing, or what I imagine that your doing. I don't know how I feel about the name... I definitely like the idea but you could probably come up with something a little better... I can't though, sorry.

They both sound more like they'd be song names, at least the temple of olympus. Stonehenge is boring... I would go with olympus but instead of temple, use something along the lines of Templars (i.e. Templars of Olympus, The Templar Knights of Olympus, The Knights Templar of Olympus, etc)... that way your using a noun that describes a person (in this case plural... band) rather than a world that describes an inanimate building yet still has a strong reflection with your original idea.

Whatcha think?I could definitely see myself saying something about a band named The Had... it's not very creative but simple and easy to remember. I think it'll fit a punk rock band pretty nicely...

How about Etcetera, or ETC for short? That would be interesting.I like it, kind of like the band * sounded out asterisk. However, Et Cetera is a company that makes "products for composing, performing, recording, and editing music and sound on the PC or Mac". Music oriented computer programs and a music band may be conflicting... not sure...

i was thinking that the Temple of Olympus could be an album name, a concept CD or something. Stonehenge is a very awesome song name... thanks!

Concept album, now there's something I can relate to. That's what I'm working on now with my pseudo-band. I definitely agree with you. Have some story that goes along with your band name. That way you can have an awesome name with a storyline and amazing levels of creativity and you can find a way to tie every song to add to a storyline... but that's just me, a huge influence on my band is Coheed and Cambria so go figure... plus it's 1:26am and I just got back from the bar so take what I'm saying here for what it is... great advice... I'm a fantastic speller... regardless, just my opinion, whats most important is how your band feels about it.

Eh... Templars/Temples sounds a bit cliche and powermetally IMHO
Don't copy coheed exactly. Use their concept to derive your OWN concept, that is different in structure and style from theirs.
Don't put every song in a story, It's already been done. Use some of the songs to reflect the story. Try different things

I'm not going to copy them by any means, they're just one of our influences (mainly the idea of a band concept). Every song is going to have some reflection on the story, some of them might not be as obvious as others. Others might appear to have nothing to do with it but actually does... so I guess I could get away with not having every song about the story. But since this is a band name thread I guess I'll say that my band name is Orion Shines Bright (OSB for short). Fits the concept wonderfully and I've always been a fan of 3-word band names. I don't really have anything up online right now so don't try to look us up ;)

Okay, I am STILL trying to think of a band name.

Heres the deal. We play punk rock, similar to NOFX, Lagwagon, Rancid, Pennywise, and stuff like that. We still don't have a name. We don't want it to be too serious, but don't want it to be a silly name.

I don't have any choices I am considering now. Try to base it off a saying, phrases you would say in your daily life, or a "the" single word.

A good example of a name is Minor Threat, something similar to that would be good.
