My band name is "The Final Freeing." We were originally gonna be a Nirvana tribute band, and when I searched the definition of Nirvana I seen 'the final freeing...' and I though that was perfect. We stuck the name, but the bassist we found didn't like Nirvana. I was looking through some of our songs, and it seems as though we are looking for freedom from the government, like a rebelion or an anarchy. I think we made the right name choice

I play in an Post punk/grunge/experimental band that play a very varied style of music but we have post punk and Grunge at the core while experimenting with many different sounds and genres.

Our influences are: Killing joke,Joy Division,Pearl Jam,Bauhaus,Nirvana,Radiohead,The Residents,Imperiet,Tool and many more. Our lyrics tend to be very dark and bleak, we mostly sing about subjects like religion(We are very anti-religion),government,loneliness,murder,rape.

Some of our lyrics could be by Cannibal Corpse but you can clearly hear what we are saying.

We play everything from straight post punk to borderline noise drone.

We were thinking of the name Cadaver Dog or Cadaver Dogs but were not sure.

I don't like it at all, it sounds like a glam metal band from the 80's, you should look at the names of metal bands and drum n bass artists and take inspiration from those two genres and think of something.

Me and a friend (drummer) have been banging out a few songs in a few jams, has been fun. Doubt we'll gig (due to other band commitments) but we may get some recording done on a myspace for some ego-wankery and whatnot, a place to stretch our minds really.

What do you think of the name "Downey"? Both guitarists of my band like it, but I'm not really for it....

It's for a band that blends influences from Indie, Punk, Grunge, and Post-Grunge, along with a bit of Shoegaze.

Personally, I liked the name Storm Seattle for it.

I'm attempting to restart my solo project. I play alternative rock I guess, mostly just generic acoustic songs I suppose. My original name for it was Farrell (my regular full name was already in use by country singer Tim O'Brien), but I feel like it's too phonetically similar to Pharrell, the rapper. Plus I may end up asking some friends to be my backing band and I don't feel like being my name with the word "Experience" attached to the end of it.

I'm changing the name to "Some Other", after one of my old songs (which I may end up rewriting and changing the name of it). Any thoughts?

dizzle_312

I think that people would probably get you and the rapper mixed up and might even criticize you but I like Some Other and especially since it actually has meaning.

OK so me and my band have been switching names for a while now and everytime we think we found a good one its taken suggestions would be great but also we have been considering "82nd St." cause its the place we always hang out and also where we practice what do you think?
( BTW we play mostly alternative and some hard rock)

Hey guys, I was just thinking of a few band names for any band that I will have in the future (Yeah, I'm that sad! But I revolve around making a band and then... You know the stories, man). But anyway, a lot of the names I come up with have a reference to Metallica (who are the main driving force and inspiration for everything I've done with regards to music), so here are a few:

Of Wolf And Man (very doubtful about this one)
Orion (Named after the hunter, not the song actually :haha)
Catatonic Overload
Valkyr
Faolchu ('Wolf' in Irish)
Laochra ('Warrior' in Irish)

Meh, I seem to think they're all cheesy, apart from the slightly plaguerised ones :haha

It's kind-of off topic, but when I was in intermediate (not sure what you call it in the US) I was in the school rock band, and whenever we played I would jump up and down like a crazy maniac because it was fun, and anyway, we were having trouble naming the band, so the principle suggests "Seismic Profile", and we think it sounds cool, so we use it, then I look it up online. Cheeky. "Seismic Profile" is how powerful an earthquake is...

Insignifacant Other sounds pretty good.

My post-rock band needs a name. These are the ones we have came up with so far:

AC80 (was the production number of my grandfathers guitar)
The Great Beyond
The Beyonders
Cult of the morning sun

Journey to Neptune
Into the night
This Island Earth
Crime of the Century

Crime of the Century is only good if you're a Supertramp cover band, otherwise its sort of just hijacking the name of their album (unless that's what you're going for)... all of them seem as though your music would be very Rush-esque, albeit I kind of like AC80.

Have two, cant decide between them;
Murder Playground, and Shotgun Circus - the band's music is along the lines of Motley Crue or GNR... yes/no/maybe/opinions on either?

Hey guys,

I'm working on a one-man project, but I have absolutely no ideas for its name. The genre is metal, but not the typical one that comes to your mind if someone says "metal". It's some kind of melodic metal, a mix between power, gothic and hard rock.

So, I'd like a good name. It must be serious and preferibly mystic/spiritual.

Thanks. :)

hmm i think Cheese and Chainsaw is better than Chainsow and Cheese. first one is more fast to pronounce. you want the short word first. say Guns N Roses. deep purple. led zeppelin.. see?! AC/D... errm forget that one :p

indestructable imho is a bit cheesy you know... more of a hardcore/death metal name?

Hey. SO I'm making this band with a buddy of mine that plays guitar as soon as next Xmas comes and he can buy a good amp.

HE wants to call it Sons Of Nergal, which is obviously a Hellboy reference. I'm not so sure if I want our music to be taken so lightly.

I mean the name sounds cool and all, and I don't have anything better, but I'm not sure I want our band name to be in honor of a movie.

Basically our music is similar to new Kalmah, I guess--melodic death metal with a crapload of Thrash elements. We've only written 3 songs but that's where we want to go with it.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Also, if anyone ever wants to use this band name for lol's, you can use it:

Bird Flew

Corny and crappy, I know, but it's the best I can come up with :P

Nobody would ever take the name "Cheese and Chainsaw" seriously.

If I owned a record label, I wouldn't even listen to the demo of a band called that; it would go straight into the trash.

I'm lead guitarist in a (long haired) 5 man Heavy Rock/Metal Band, heavily influenced by Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Iron Maiden, AC DC, Aerosmith and Metallica.

I'm looking for a name that sounds cool, is short and easy to remember, and possibly one word, because one word sounds the business, like Cream, Free, Spirit or Earth (Sabbath's original name.)

I wouldn't mind having "Black" as a prefix in the name, I was considering Black Void, I dunno, it sounds cool to me, but please give me your ideas

The other prefix I like is "Iron" (as in Iron Maiden, Iron Butterfly) So yeah, that's all I got...:)

Why not The Origin of the Species? That actually sounds pretty badass; makes me think of Muse.

My band does Alternative. We all write, so we get sounds from a lot of different influences, but I guess the three main ones would be The Silversun Pickups, Placebo, and Smashing Pumpkins.

The singer brought up the idea for the name "Mariposa" (spanish for "butterfly), and I really like it. What do you guys think?

i like it
maybe a synonym for ancient would be better though

i was thinking of using the name "Fat" for a rock n' roll revival band. the idea was, for me at least, that the name wasn't too big a deal and you would think of the people in the band more than the name like bands from the 60's/70's (vanilla fudge, the beatles, led zeppelin, the small faces, frijid pink)
maybe it'll take some of the stigma or whatever away

thoughts?

04-23-2010, 12:11 AM
To me "Fat" sounds a bit plain, although i guess thats what you're going for. Personally, I might add another word to that name, but thats just me. I can however see that name working out if you decide to keep it.

I am currently working on some solo stuff and I'd like to put a name to my music. Its kind of a mix of ambient space rock thing, similar to pink floyd, although with a bit of electronic music, anyways I was thinking something like : Sandcastle Circus, Circus Silhouettes, Sandcastle Seeds, Circus Seeds, Sandcastle Silhouettes, etc.

The name ideas come from the line in the bob dylan song mr. tambourine man, where he says: Silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands. I think thats such a perfect line, I was gonna use "circus sands" but its already taken apparently. Anyways what do you guys think?

My band has recorded a few demos and such, but we desperately need a name to make anything happen!

We play stuff similar to August Burns Red, Parkway Drive but try to include catchy pop-punkcore (IDK if thats a real genre, if its not, im making it up now) sections such as A Day To Remember and Four Year Strong.

We want a name that has a good balance of heaviness and not-so-heaviness.
Any suggestions?

Who all likes the band name Anaideia?
It is technically Αναιδεια ( which is Greek) in English.
It is pronounced Ahh- Nai( like a long-I)- Dayy- Ahh.
It mean the spirit or incarnation of Ruthlessness, Unforgivingness, or Shamelessness.
So I liked it for my Punk- metal band name.

But I need feed back. So tell me, Pit, what do you think of such a name?

Stupid? if not which do you like?

Btw, to the person two posts above, i dont know if your making music in english or if your only gonna be doing it in greek, but in english it sounds like your saying "any day" which to me doesnt sound to great in english but thats just my opinion.

To the person above me, downstrobe sounds cool, primarily grey doesn't roll off your tongue quite as nicely but still not bad.

04-28-2010, 06:27 PM
My bands name is Ocean Sleep.

The name has a little story behind it:

I once almost drowned when I was younger and later started having dreams about it. At first water started scaring the hell out of me but later I became sort of obsessed with poetry, music and other art that glorified drowning as somehow beautiful, being one with the ocean and returning to mother earth, started writing stuff my self (wrote a song called Deep Sea Dreaming for a school project once, a technical sludge song culminating in blastbeats, tremolo chords and distorted screaming). When it came to naming the band Ocean Sleep was one of the ideas I came up with so we decided to go with the good old Trent Reznor approach, i.e. think up as many names as we can and then remove names as soon as we were bored of them, see which name could stand the test of time.

About a week later Ocean Sleep was the only name any of us could remember so it was chosen.

OK, I formed a new band, and we're at the the point where we're sure that were going to stick with it, and we're ready to choose a name. We're heavily influenced by Jimi Hendrix's clean, melodic side(e.g. Little Wing & Bold as Love), Neil Young, and we have some influences from Blues/Jazz and Pop Rock.

Some ideas i've had are The Shame of The Cities, The World Over, Boxer Rebellion, At Whit's End, and Clearing House.

Suggestions, Opinions?

advice, guys:

on air
on thin air
infernal youth
state evacuation
in progress

Which one should we pick? The rest of my band like "on air", we used to be in progress, but people got a bit confused by it, and we decided state evacuation isn't right (though the other guitarist likes it a lot).
I haven't yet suggested 'on thin air' or 'infernal youth' to them, but right now the concensus is 'on air'
(note: band full of girls, and we don't really want a name that sounds too pop-punk or too hardcore br0otal metal. )

Something with Radio in it would be pretty good for an indie band, not being cynical or whatever, just saying that it sounds nice :) personally I don't think the word anatomy goes THAT well with it, but it is still better than a lot of br00tal names. Maybe make the second word something related to your band in real life, so it is almost like the band is "broadcasting" (god this is cheesy) music related to you and your bandmates, could just be your initials or whatever :P

Holy crap I can't believe I just made all that on what I thought would be a little idea O_O

Bah. I'm in the middle of recording a prog metal thing. It's sort of creepy-sounding in a (hopefully) subtle way, lots of instruments, choirs and string sections in every song, influences include Opeth, Mirrorthrone, Devin Townsend, Nevermore. For the last few years I planned to call is Necrostroodel, but I've suddenly lost all confidence in that name.

Ideally I'd like a one-word title that's reasonably simple so as to be memorable, but I can't think of anything. Anyone have an idea?

the "ing" of forge makes it sound a bit weird. maybe just "forged" utopia?

i thought of using the name "Helepolis Wins" based on the ancient siege weapon (and how it looks like it always wins). would have stuck with just helepolis but some crappy post punk band grabbed it already, but i think they may be dead.

Going with your creepy theme:
Lurker
Witching Hour (2 words but kind of cool sounding)

and using a Thesaurus:
Penumbra (another word for shadow, apparently)

Personally I like the sound of Penumbra.

(For a semi-serious deathcore band)
semi-serious as in, we're serious about being a band but the music we play is silly to a degree.
