A Grim Business sounds 100 times better.

First off, i play industrial and experimental music, distorted and filled with noise. ;)
Anyway, what do you think is a better name, Silent Static or Beta Decay? I've done a little as Silent Static, but so far I haven't done anything serious, I'm waiting to decide the name.

Silent Static, definately.

For the "A Grim Business" one, I think just "Grim Business" would sound better.

hey guys
i need a name for a Hard rock/heavy metal may be even other type of metal band! but a neutral name so it could suit any genre

here are some names I came up with:

Farenheith
Penumbra
Umbra
Pearl Harbor (sounds cool I think)
Iron Scarecrow (reminds me heavy metal)
Chapter Four
Vengeance
Element X (tho it still reminds me Hardcore! \m/ )

also the one that i came up with today was Sons of Anarchy! imo sounds cool!

I have two projects going on at the moment and need a bit of (in general) critique for some names.

Don't steal without permission please. :]

~ A Cynical Smile
~ With Eyes Of An Owl
~ When Bears Are Born
~ Lights Off
~ I've Never Seen A Scene More Beautiful
~ Cliche To Say
~ Truth Be Told
~ When, In Fact
~ Sleeping Shotgun
~ Like An Avalanche

Also, what kind of genre do the names fit into in your opinion?

the only decent one, IMO, the rest sound more like bad emo song names that have nothing to do with the songs...

Yeah I thought it was pretty catchy and it gets my actual name (well last name) out as well :haha:

I'm sure Pearl Harbor and Sons of Anarchy are probably taken already. Farenheith doesn't really sound like it'd be for a heavy rock band, classic maybe.

Right now my band is called Vegeta. If you google "vegeta band" nothing comes up besides one thing that doesn't even look like a real band. The question is, is using the DBZ character's name something that could cause trouble? I've heard it both ways before, so some clarification would be great.

I'm planning on starting a little solo project over the summer and I want to give it an actual name instead of just my first and last name (Daniel Long), since IMO that's kind of boring. I've narrowed it down to five names:

Aeronomic Philosophy
Amoebic Gel
No One, Noone
The Shield Effect
Carbon Freezing

The genres I'm planning on doing are like shoegaze, noise/experimental stuff, and some acoustic stuff. So let me know what band names you think would best fit the music I'm planning on doing or if all those names suck and I should just use my name. I also wouldn't mind any suggestions if you have any. :D

Okay. Days of the Phoenix fell through. I'm over it. So we're looking for something politically charged. Not really politically charged. I guess that's entirely the wrong way to go about it. But we want to name our band after something historically, preferably that people will get the reference to(I saw Unit 731, and wanted that, but as it turns out, I found a band on myspace that already had the name, and nobody I know had ever heard of it.) So we're still totally lost. Anyone have any ideas? I'd prefer something in the political area, but no ideas are bad ideas when your band doesn't have a name, ha. If it helps, we're a punk band...4 or 5 members, if that's important. depends on if i wanna get creative with guitar writing.

Just Myspace the name before posting it. It's almost always been taken if it's a fairly common concept (IE: the one you used). It works with your genre though.

I'm in a screamo sort of gig, somewhere in the vein of Saetia, Pg.99, Circle Takes the Square, that kind of stuff. Some band names we're considering:

Rainbow Assmaster
The Swiss Army Rangers
Admiral Awesome

What's the best word to combine with Republic for a hard blues/rock band? Influences of Guns N' Roses, Extreme, Aerosmith, Rolling Stones and Queen. I really like the word, but I can't think of anything to go with it. I also like the idea of a name like Audioslave, but I can't think of any words to smush together like that that sound anything other than faggish. Any help? :)

Hey guys, my drummer and I can't decide between a band name we both agree on. Originally it was Through Peril and he still really likes that, but i've outgrown it. I brought up the point that a lot of bands are like "Through (insert here)" or "With (insert here)" and that it gets repetitive and stale. And no offense to him, but I think he tries too hard on sounding dark and heavy. I thought of the name Carving Fidelity (I haven't suggested this to him yet); I find it has a much better ring to it. So which is better: Through Peril or Carving Fidelity?

If you guys can come up with any more sophisticated unique metal band names that sound cool that would be awesome

I think Engulfed in flames might make people think you're an In Flames cover band.

That said, I'm restarting my one man project. It used to be a comedy black/death/thrash metal type band, called Bearzum. Lyrically I'm taking a more serious turn, and as far as the sound goes I'm going more toward thrash with groove metal and melodeath thrown in.

My current ideas are:
The Mephysteaux Syndrome
Sledgehammer Messiah
The Fallen and the Forsaken
Jotunslajer

Hey everybody, I'm in a situation where I'm thinking about changing my stage name. I hate to appear so "undercover" here, but I'm not ready to tell anybody my name here yet.

Anyway, it's kind of a boring name like Steven Tully. Instead, I'd like to make it more dimensional...something like Steven ______(add 3 syllable last name here). The problem is that I've already released a CD and 5 songs under the Steven Tully name!

I don't want an actually moniker...I just need a "less" dorky name Lol. Or do you think I should just keep my real one (even if it is lame)? Idk...opinions please? In case it matters, I make folk/rock music & I'm 20.

Seriously?
I wouldn't bother changing it. Dorky names can be just as noticable as a catchy stage moniker, it's kinda 'anti-cool' (which itself is cool) and goes well with the folk image, infact sometimes, the dorkier it is, the better it is.

Take the example of John Mellencamp, he started off with the pretty cool sounding name of 'Johnny Cougar', then changed it to 'John' Cougar, then John Cougar 'Mellencamp' and finaly just plain old 'John Mellencamp'. Apparently the changes were because as he matured, he didn't think anyone would take him seriously with a name like 'Johnny Cougar'

A better example would be Elton John. His real name is Reginald Dwight, now fair enough, that name may have been just a little too nerdy, but look at the name he replaced it with. 'Elton' was the kinda name that boring middle class people named their kids, and 'John' is probably the most common names in the western world, when he started out under that name, it wasn't exactly a name that stuck in the memory.
Yet now, that name instantly says 'showbiz' because it's associated with one of the biggest celebrities in music, which really is down to the guy's talent as an entertainer and song writer.

You could call yourself Steven De Wolf or Steven Sepulchre or Steven Zodiac or any other name that suggests a cool image, but those kinda names are really more suitable for the cheesy commercial metal bands, but for folk/rock, and this is simply my opinion here, I'd say that it would be better to have a name that suggests that you take yourself a little more seriously than that, a name that suggests that the music is more important than the name, because I would imagine that that's the general attitude of the audience that you are aiming for.

Maybe one suggestion I would give is to shorten the first name, 'Steve' Tully, to me, seems to have a better ring to it.

Pretty good, nice and catchy, I assume it's a reference to the poet, or possibly even his novelist wife, but I guarantee that lots of people will assume that's your singer's name, so make sure she's OK with that as it can get annoying when everyone starts calling her 'Shelley'.
A good example of what I'm talking about is Debbie Harry from 'Blondie', because she had blonde hair, people used to assume that she was 'Blondie', and apparently it used to piss her off a bit.

Really having trouble coming up with a name. I'm really looking for a NAME, not a phrase or object or random collection of words. :/ It's really hard to describe our kind of music. But I guess it's sort of dance/deathmetal/pop We take influence from bands such as: Evanescence, Infected Mushroom, Lady Gaga, Mindless Self Indulgence, Muse, Nine Inch Nails, Opeth, Pink Floyd, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, System of a Down, The Prodigy, it's really kinda weird and... interesting?

I love band names that sound like names (as in, not a persons name obviously, but they're not just phrases or random words like a lot of metalcore bands) such as Evanescence, Nirvana, Opeth, even Pink Floyd.

I'm almost resorting to just scouring a dictionary for cool sounding words. Anyone got any random ideas popping up?

My new bands name is The Briantists. We decided on it after brainstorming for two hours. Our drummer Brian, kept communig up with lame ones as jokes like talk to the band, and don't go bear. (Instead of talk to the hand and don't go there)
Then he said Briantologists, which was still kinda lame but then it morphed into The Mad Briantists, but eventually we decided on just The Briantists, and it grew on us.

So what started out as a joke has turned into our name for our indie band- Bushes Don't Cry. I thought of it last year coming home from a music festival with friends as a "most hipster band name" joke-thing, but apparently it's stuck around with my friends and I pretty well.

Do you guys think it's a poor choice/too "gaggy?" Or does it have some appeal like other bands with unconventional names like (to me at least) Deep Purple, Phish, Smashing Pumpkins, etc.

Right, my band is a modern rock band, called Dispute.

But like, at least 4 people I know speak to me like it's the worst band name in history and are trying to make me change it. (one thinks "big fat barmaid" is a better name...)

Can anyone tell me if they think it's a bad name, and if so, why!?
I can't see anything wrong with it.

How about "Towers" for a metalcore band?

As for other people's.. Visceral Karnage is pretty good, in my opinion. It is kind of grindcore/death metal-ish but it still works for a death/thrash band I think.

I don't like The Wicked Dreams. Haha the whole part about Wicked is corny to me. And so is Dreams. And I honestly don't really like the idea of having a band name start with "The". ..But that's just me.

Bushes Don't Cry is a great name :) But I just think of vaginas when I read and say that name lol

Hello guys

I am starting a new Folk/bluegrass band but I haven't been able to get a cool name for it, so I am wondering if you all can help me with it.

I am playing resonator guitar, so I was thinking about a name related to Locomotives you know, the strings sliding back and forth against the steel slide thing on my dobro, is like a train sliding against the railway, does it make sense? its kinda the same friction.

Also steam trains are so cool.

I was considering "Puffin' Billy" or "Salamanca" both were cool steam trains.

Influences: Jerry Douglas, Tim O'brien, Martin Gross, Alison Krauss, Earl Scruggs, Ricky Scaggs etc.

Thank you much, I look forward to get your cool names!

Hi guysss!

Planning to start up a melodic metal band, sort of Children of Bodom with clean vocals, and I need a name. An old band of mine had the name 'Shades of Asphodel' because I love mythological based names...

So can I have some suggestions please for melodic metal band names. Doesnt have to have mythological roots, but in some ways it is preferable :)

Righto, looking for a name for a project that is run by myself and features all styles of music. Rock, Classical, bit of remixing and other stuff you name it, i'm gonna put it on there.

At the moment it is all being done under my own name but I want something else, so it's not immediately obvious that it is me. Can be anything, just nothing to 'blingy' I guess.

I think it's a pretty cool name, but for some odd reason it makes me think of like a heavy metal band, like Mudvayne or something. But it's unique and does fit your genre.

Hey guys, looking for a name that ends in "er" (like Slayer, Destroyer...you get the idea) has to be an evil or aggressive sounding word for it to fit our style.

We are a Heavy Thrash band (think like Slayer or Dark Angel)

currently we are called Warhead, like a nuclear missile. but we are considering "er" names.

Actually, Nephilim aren't demons necessarily but either one of two things really. Simple people, or (my personal favorite and the one I think fits more logically) the offspring of Angels and Humans that took on most of the lesser powers of Angels and the (in general) the darker side of humans.

I've been having trouble coming up with a good name for my current project. I'm currently writing concept music for a piece of literature I'm also working. Multi-media project, if you will. The general theme of the concept is a mesh between my life combined with mythology and basically writing my own mythological story with reflections of my personal life. Without going into too much detail I will say the following as far as specifics for what I'm looking for.

I want the name to have something to do with the phrase "to place in the sky". Whenever a human or animal is every transformed into a constellation, it's always referred to as being placed in the sky. So that's the general theme I want to branch off of. I'm a fan of two or three word phrases. Something that seems like it has a deeper meaning behind it and is not cheesy.

I've been raking my brain for months over this and can't find anything I like that doesn't automatically get categorized as a bad band name but a good song name. I got plenty of song names :)

Thanks for any help.

@Physcosick - Try latin since it's mythology based? E Locum Caelum is latin for "From the place of Heaven" which pretty much along the lines you're looking for.

I've looked into latin some but I've found most phrases that have to do with my theme are all mouthfuls that are hard to pronounce, remember, etc. You have the right idea though and I'll definitely save it for future references.

Meh, locally there is no one with the same name, or even close to it. Around here, the music scene is all shitty screamo/post hardcore stuff.

IE: Streaking Downtown, Grace Under Pressure, Dream Alaska, The Day I Ate the Moon.

So around here, were pretty much the only band with technical roots, as well as the only band around here who has our sound. So...for now I think it'll be good.

Alright so this isn't a question of what to name the band, we have already named it, but we have a problem finding out that we have a very similar name of a band already out, we named the band The Ruff Feathers sort of meaning to be a mispelling of Rough, found that there is a band called the Ruffled Feathers, should we change the name? we already made a Youtube page, our music isn't similar, and the name means different, plus we didn't know about it until now.

Also what do you guys think about naming your band after a song of another..how does the copyright work with that, can you be sued? I know Radiohead did it.
