Me, my brother, and two buddies of mine wanna make a band, hard rock of course. We come from Kentucky and we don't really want to sing devilish stuff, but anyway could anyone suggest a band name? We were thinking about somethin like The Crucifiction.

stayxgold
02-19-2006, 07:17 PM
my band is called origin of doubt. but we're probably going to change it. and we don't really have a style. we're everything. indie, pop punk, and hardcore at the same time.

02-19-2006, 07:29 PM

Ok so we recently decided to call our Smashing Pumpkins, Incubus-esque band (two females and two males) Chapter Eleven. It's a literary reference from Jeffrey Eugenide's book Middlesex. What do you guys think?

MNrocker
02-22-2006, 11:51 AM
My band is mostly emo, some screamo. We have been trying to think of a good name for a while now. Originally, we came up with "The Lost Harmonics", but I thinked that sucked. Currently, we are "Equasions of Truth". I don't think thats very good either. Any suggestions?

ibanezza
02-22-2006, 11:20 PM
I actually quite like The Lost Harmonics... Equasions of Truth's just a bit too cliched, I think. Keep thinking of new names, though; don't EVER go for a name that only a few of you like, I learnt that the hard way!

ibanezza
02-22-2006, 11:23 PM
That does sound like a good name. Imagine seeing that on a flyer. I can't even think of how many people would go.
In my area there's a band called Ample Cleavage ;)

AK Guitarist
02-24-2006, 02:35 AM
Me and my (occasional  ) drummer like the name "Chrome Nun". It case it matters, we play hardcore and melodic death metal. Whatcha think?

Mrwonderfulcr1
02-24-2006, 01:58 PM
Does anyone notice a corrilation of numbers in band names with success or popularity of that band? I cite 3 doors down, 311, 10 years, sum 41... and so on. I dont know, it just seems like somthing worth looking into.

AK Guitarist
02-24-2006, 05:08 PM
^ None of that bands got that big, either. Doubtful they ever will. 3 Doors Down kicks ass, though.

Oi, ibanezza. I see my suggesstion made it into your sig.

Captain Jesus and the Nuns of Self-Love will rock your world.

Mrwonderfulcr1
02-26-2006, 06:10 PM
those bands may not be that big now, but atleast you know of them. think about all the other bands that you dont know. there arnt as many bands with numbers in them and most people know a lot of them. btw those were just a few names, there are more. also consider that 10 years is relatively new, and many people know of them. but yeah twas just an idea.

DMB-Shawn
02-27-2006, 08:03 PM
My band and I originally came up with the name "The Desired Profession" but recently we've been contemplating just changing it to "DesPro" to give it a bit of uniqueness.

What do you guys think of Third Estate as a name? My band is currently named The Unnoted and I hate it - it's too immature for what my band has grown into and we're releasing an album in like two months hopefully and i don't want the unnoted printed on glorious music. Any help is great. By the way we play stoner rock ala QOTSA, Nebula, Orange Goblin, Burning Brides, etc..

I'd try and stay away from 'The' names. Out of that lot, I'd say Brazen Face and Old Ulysses. But you'd have to cover 'Tales Of Brave Ulysses' otherwise I'd hunt you down and kill you. ;)

As for your question (if it was directed at me, not sure) our band influences are among the likes of: Hendrix, Vaughan, Pink Floyd, Rory Gallagher, Cream, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Runrig, Radiohead, Yes etc. So we sound classic rock, but with a twist, if you get what I mean.

Would it be stupid to replace a 'c,' 'k,' or 'ck' sound with a q? Like, 'Craqk?' or something?

Also, I'm in the beginning phases of forming a band that plays a wide variety of rock (I guess what you would call Hard Alternative or Post Grunge with some definite classic metal influence and progressive elements...) The concept and lyrics of the band would have a somewhat dark, emotional bent, but by no means would we ever put something out that could be labeled as emo. Where could I look to draw inspiration for a name?

My band and I are having serious problems deciding/agreeing on a band name. I guess we play very progressive post-hardcore punk with lyrical elements of...emo. We've been trying for a solid week to find one, putting in a lot of time thinking and discussing, arguing...etc

I think it's worth noting that I am the sole songwriter of this band and thus most of it's source of musical creativity. Personally I want a name that's simple, unpretentious, but also intelligent, subtle, exotic and perhaps alluding to some really cool book, film or game that's inspired me. I'm really set on a one word name (as I think they are more free to assume several meanings/interpretations), like some of these:
Reviége
Quevillon
Ivalna
Sonatine
Nuovo Sonar
Buletta
Lunaire

On the other hand, some of the other band members (who, I might add, do not contribute to creating/writing the content as much as I do!) want names like these:
Home Before Dark
Colours In Transit
The Dream Club Murders
Dad's Bad news
Fury Before Dawn
Paperframe
Hope Minus Substance
Fractures From Falling

...Which I really am not comfortable with. It's not a case of me being against everyone else's name, it's that everyone dislikes each other's names. We're all pulling in different directions.

What do we do? Are any of the above names good/terrible?

^^^ Just as a personal opinion... I don't think many people, like we simple folk, will be able to pronounce, let alone spell or know the meaning of, any of the names that you have come up with. I can understand that you feel that you have more of a "right" to choose a band name than the others, but you are, indeed, a band and that means you all have to find a balance.

so seeing as I'm still confused.... I've got some questions..no they're not questions like "what should I call my band?" that's the least of my concerns seeing as my band has a name.

here's the deal, let's say that Today my bandmate found a band *searched on myspace* that started using the same band name as ourselves let's say it's something like "Kitty vinegar"

alright so there are two kitty vinegar's, we've had some gigs maybe 5 or 6 and we've had stickers made and stuff and earned a profit, nothing much but around 400 so far. now this other band we found today we don't know anything about them other than they all have instruments and a faulty song.

SO what would one do in such situation. obviously email them and tell them "hey we're already using that..so please change your name..thanks" but what if they don't agree. is there anything we can do? we're not changing our names we already have stickers, and we've got a good local name as kitty vinegar. so us passing out or w/e isn't happening. and they aren't passing out. what happens? would we have to take said band to court? send them a letter from some high authority person? if we have to do this everytime some band tries to use our name wouldn't we run out of money if these letters are as expensive as they sound *obviously not the letter, but having to pay someone to write them* or can said letters be saved and re-used? and is the only reason you need someone to write the letter so that it is as threatening as possible without actually being a threat?

and just so you know...anyone who wants to use kitty vinegar go right ahead :liplick: aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

I think that if your band needs a name, it should be you that thinks it up, or someone you know. They're supposed to have meaning and represent everything that your music stands for, ask yourself if that name does just that.

Well if it gives inspiration. A friend of mine was in a band called Vera Renzi. He thought of the name when reading about a woman name Vera Renczi from Bucharest who ate many men she was close with. He later realized he misspelled the name and got pissed and said and i quote "**** it we already designed the tshirts". I liked this name alot. Unfotunately they've broken up by now. But I think it's a good example of how to find creativity.

The Saga of Malcolm Bliss...

Sometime right after the 90's opened we had a band called, Malcolm Bliss, of course. Now Malcolm was a real historical personage, a benefactor of the underprivledged in STL. So they named a city hospital for him. Eventually it became State Mental Hospital #9. I mean that was a good name with great historical connections that rolled out of the mouth well. I heard often we weren't the first to use it...

Some years later I googled the name and it seems that there are a couple of bands, (NJ and CA) which are using the name. Plus there is a local STL cover band which were using it again but switched it to Malcolm Blitz. Eh, I don't really have a problem with that, and really, I don't think its that hard to come up with a decent name.

Rules are make to be broken, but generally keep it simple, have some sort of connection/connotation, and make sure it comes out of the mouth well and has a sticky sound to it.

As an example, Glaringstare...

Dude, how about fuck you? Hendrix stood for peace and love and acceptance, which is what Christianity is fundamentally based around. So you're an idiot, and that statement just proves you're a twat.

Glen'sHeroicAct

Why?

So they're Christian, and they may like to sing songs about God or whatever. Why the fuck should you or anyone else care if they play some Hendrix songs? Maybe they like Hendrix. Maybe - although this may be hard for you to digest - they're really great musicians, and they really enjoy listening to and playing Hendrix's music, and they want to cover a few songs. You're not anyone to say whether they can or can't cover a certain artist's songs because of their beliefs and/or main genre. They may be very good for all you know, so shut the fuck up bashing Christian bands. Sure, I don't nessecarily like Christian rock, but it's alright for just generic music with average lyrics.
I'd take my local 'big' Christian rock band over any screamo band, Blink 182, Fall Out Boy etc. any day.

look, all im sayin is, they really shouldn't be carrying themselves as a christian band with jimi hendrix's songs. i mean, are they really a christian band if they play 'mostly hendrix'?
and if they take the label of a christian band while playing mostly hendrix, it just seems that they are either in a great lack of songs, or are slightly overstepping the boundaries of their genre.

SomeEvilDude
06-27-2006, 08:19 AM

Why? That's a really stupid thing to say. So maybe the original stuff they right is Christian rock, but they want to cover a few Hendrix songs because they like the music, and they're talented enough to do it. It doesn't affect you, and hey, they're playing some decent music which is always a good thing.
And why are they 'overstepping the boundaries of their genre'? A Christian rock band, covering rock songs. I can't see the problem. Oh wait, yes I can, you're a biggoted fuck who is too stupid to realise that not all Christians are extremist morons, there's nothing wrong with Christian rock, nothing wrong with Christian rock bands covering Hendrix songs, and certainly nothing wrong with experimenting in different genres - if you can even make that stupid claim.
Good day.

chinesechipmunk
06-27-2006, 10:15 AM
I think what he's getting at is that if they play mostly hendrix, you'd have to say that their genre is Hendrix's. They cannot be christian rock unless they mostly play christian rock, and if you're a covers band - which this sounds like, since they're playing covers more than original material, so majority wins on that case - you really have gotta take the genre of the band you're covering...

you must be a complete idiot.... how can you not grasp what i am trying to say. he said it himself, they play MOSTLY HENDRIX! if he is a CHRISTIAN ROCK BAND he should obviously have more CHRISTIAN ROCK SONGS than HENDRIX SONGS simple, no? hes not just covering a couple hendrix songs, hes playing """mostly hendrix""" get it? hes overstepping his boundaries by playing more songs that are not in his genre than songs that are in his genre. if he plays mostly hendrix, and calls his band a christian band cuz they are all christians or something, or wanted to make a christian rock band but have no christian rock songs, they are not a christian rock band, just a band that wants to be a christian rock band but doesnt actually play christian rock songs. that is overstepping their boundaries. they are labeling themselves falsly. now if they actually cover some christian rock songs, and are actually making at least some attempts to write some christian rock songs of their own, then i will accept that they are a christian rock band that just doesnt have a lot of songs yet, and is just covering hendrix until they can get some more. but if they are just gonna play mostly hendrix the whole time, then they are not performing the duties of a christian rock band, which is actually playing christian rock songs. they are just a bunch of christians that are in a band, playing hendrix. not do sound prejudice against christians or anything.

If this thread STILL is going on, do you guys have any suggestions for a fun or cool band name for a pop-punk band?

Thanks.

hey my band plays metal/hardcore bit of thrash metal chucked in umm its out of

Theory of Death
Defilament
Ruptured Inside
Insinuate Demise

thnx any comments appreciated

Insinuate Demise is pretty cool for metal. You should also consider the name Irukandji (the name of the deadliest jellyfish in the world, kinda dumb but the name sounds cool). My band was contemplating it but we decided on The Twisted Mystics. Just thought it would be a cool name for metal.

is 'green heaven' (yeah I know its a RHCP song) taken as a band name? and is it gay?

edit: I think 'walkabout' (again, a chilis song) is better. anyone have any views?

I'm looking for a band name, we play a ton of stuff, but the musical direction is going toward something like a hybrid of The Replacements and the London Calling era The Clash. So like a mix of alternative/rock/punk.

My band have had many debates regarding our bandname but it currently stands as Terminal Cruize. Firstly id like your opinion on the name please:D Secondly tho however would you say that even if your band name is not catchy if your music makes the grade the name will not reflect as people with become accustemed to it lol eg. if you heard the name Pink Floyd before they were famous do you think it would have such a ring to it as it does nowadays?

Anyway, thanks for any advice.

if you feel like it check out our site www.terminal-cruize.piczo.com :D

Thanks again

Can you rate the name "Witness Removal".

Cheers

What's a good name for a "band" name of an invididual person - ala Nine Inch Nails?

For examples of my music, http://horriblemusic.dmusic.com

Nothing corny or cheesy :p:

Edit: GASP!

How about this:

The Victims of Boredom

Good, bad?

DevilMayCare
07-19-2006, 04:56 PM
I think it sounds better without the 'The' but a good name I think.

yawn
07-19-2006, 05:05 PM
^ Cool, I've already decided Victims of Boredom to be the name I used for the band website I just made yesterday.

wangmaster
07-19-2006, 05:09 PM
yah. but I am nowhere nearer to mine. the racist bassists. does that sounds cheesy to you?

DevilMayCare
07-19-2006, 05:12 PM
Maybe a little bit, but that little bit along with the slight controversial edge to it seems to make it seem somewhat 'more punk' to my ears.

wangmaster
07-19-2006, 05:13 PM
so is that a 'its good' or a 'screw it and find another one'?

yawn
07-19-2006, 05:24 PM
^ I'd say go with a different name.

Is everyone in your band a bassist?

wangmaster
07-19-2006, 05:31 PM
no, but we can all play bass. we have one vocal/guitar (me) a bass, another guitar and drums.

any ideas for another name? i have no ideas. like at all.

The Supremist Extremists :headbang:

wangmaster
07-19-2006, 05:37 PM
lol sticking to the whole ryhm thing. not bad actually, lol, is it taken?

yawn
07-19-2006, 05:46 PM
^ Probably not.

If it is, go with the Extremist Supremists :D

Though that doesn't sound as good...

wangmaster
07-20-2006, 08:34 AM
I see...

but with that you could just invert any taken name, like day green, or jovi bon, or out boy fall (even though they suck money dick)

tallicamet!!!!

yawn
07-20-2006, 08:57 AM
^ Except Extremist Supremists actually makes sense, since it's an adjectice followed by a noun.

wangmaster
07-20-2006, 08:58 AM
true. good point. but tallicamet has a ring to it.

but extremist supremist sounds good also.

yawn
07-20-2006, 09:00 AM
^ Eh, Tallicamet sounds kind of weak to me.

Taliquémet sounds cooler
