That's been my main approach. In fact The Death Sedative is a song title by Extol. I recently came up with At the Barricades We Fall after an album by the band Selfmindead and a similar name Bow Down the Barricades, which I heard in a song today by a ska band. The line turned out to be "Belt down the barricades", but I think Bow has a better sound.

How does "Stale" sound? PLan to play a Gungre-esque Metal/Rock.

Just thought it up using the name "Layne Staley" from Alice in Chains. (One of the best singers ever, in my opinion. Sort of my idol. )

I like it. Perhaps slightly close to "Staind" (who could equally be described as Grunge-esque Metal/Rock), but a good name, particularly for that genre.

I have a math/death/hardcore band with some altrock and jazz influences. Current band name is Too Late For Roses but we're not sure if that's going to get us far. Should we stick with Too Late For Roses or use:
-Calm Before the Storm
-The Checkered Skulls
-Cries of the Past
-Or something else?

My band name is currently Gauge Nine, but it sounds too stereotypical or cheesy. (we play poppy but sorta proggy acoustic stuff, with all sorts of random influences)

so I'm thinking one of these instead

The Insatiable Stephan Drees (the name of our lead guitarist)

or

The Beijing Anamoly (look it up)

So I've started this band and I guess you could call it "indie" with a 90's Smashing Pumpkins sound with some fast quick paced post hardcore things

So I was thinking: The Sunspots of Happyland
The Ice Cream Kangaroos
Captain Spanky and the Easy Sitters
This is a Ghost
The Sidewalk Shoe Steppers

What would you guys suggest?

K so just started a new Band with some friends of Mine, and we play Hard Rock, Early metal kinda thing and the occasional Ballad. think AC/DC Meets Skid Row Meets Sabbath meets Poison then a one night stand=Us!

Well, my band plays a Hard Rock/Alternative Rock blend (Foo Fighters/Audioslave-esque). We've had different ideas (usually based on inside jokes)

Sundogs
Life Obsession
Cubet (us trying to say CBT, all three of us's first intials put together)
Shortbus Theatre

But we decided we dont really want any of those. Shortbus theatre is alright, but it sort of suggests we are retarded (Short-bus...)

Suggestions?

Quark Soup
12-27-2007, 03:03 AM
^I like Sundogs. Cubet is alright; didn't really care for the rest.

My band and I are writing some concept albums based on a story I came up with. We're thinking of calling the band Alcatraz Hero. Here's the gist of the story (so it's understood why we're thinking of this name). The story takes place about 15-20 years in the future and the U.S. is now a totalitarian government. It's about a guy who is sent to Alcatraz but cannot remember why. He plans his escape to find out what really happened to him and why he was sent to Alcatraz. There's more to the story, I just wanted to explain why we were thinking of calling the band Alcatraz Hero. Opinions?

The Rambler

Sundogs is a good name.

And for Quark Soup, I think 20 years is a little too soon for a totalitarian state in the U.S. (in my opinion). I'd just move the date further forward maybe two decades. Besides that, go for it.

OK, so me and my friends have sort of formed a band, and we're looking for a name that implies the heaviness of having two bassists, but are looking for something much less cheesy than "Earthquake" or "Quake". Having the word Quake would be good, considering one of the songs I'm in the process of writing, but I'm looking for something non-cheesy. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks very much in adavance.

My brother, our friend, and I just started a rock band together. Our friend decided on the name Our Deadly Regrets. So, what do you think of the band name?

hi everyone, another band name question. my original band recently ...disbanded... and we got two new members with 3 of our old members. we were originally called "Retrogage". Now we're trying to come up with a new name for our band. Some options were:
- Circadian Rhythm
- Forty minutes late
- keep "Retrogage"

Circadian Rhythm is a band already I think, but everyone really likes that name... can anyone think of something similar? I personally like it because it sounds music-ish, its a universal concept, and its a bit science-y which i like. thanks!

What do you think of "Bachs Day Off"?
Idk myself. I can't think of a real good name for the "genre". It's a mix between Freak Kitchen, 80's glam and Frank Zappa. Well that's the best way I can describe it. It's not the same as anything I've heard before (and shouldn't be) so. But basically the name should be based of humor, and not bad spelling or deppressions :p

Ok, now whilst i've provided those links for you, remember your band name has not only to be memorable, but also have some reasoning behind it. "I found it on a tab site/I used a band name generator" will get you laughed out of Rolling Stone interviews when you're rich and famous... try to use something personal or meaningful from your life.

K So my band chose the name "2 Minutes to Midnight" and no one else is using it according to google and a few sites from the first post. so is it time to Register? The site i went to (also from the first post) doesnt supply the Trademark thing, but its like 12 dollars for a Registration and will alert other bands that its your name. should i go ahead and Register it?

My band name is Hetairia. We play metal.

That's a pretty good name, depending on the type of metal - that sounds like death/speed metal to me, maybe hair, but that's just my opinion.

What do you think of Major League Xnfidels? Or Major League Infidels, just we have a really nice logo for Xnfidels. We'd be playing in the style of alternative/hardcore/metalcore. Something like what you'd get if Taking Back Sunday, Underoath, and Chiodos had a threeway. What their baby genre would be.

Metallorgy. pronounced as you would pronounce metallurgy but with an o instead of a u. does it sound good for a metal/hard rock band.

It wouldn't be pronounced metal-urgy though, it would be pronounced metal-orgy.

I need a name for a folk influenced acoustic project of mine. Think city and colour-ish. Any ideas?

I need a ska name, other than United We Fall. Its kinda too punk-rock / grungey for me.

I'm forming a band and I thought Cyanide High was pretty good. If no one is using it then it's ours now! Opinions? It's for a post-hardcore/alternative/indie/screamo band (I haven't decided on the genre yet :p: )

Cyanide does smell quite nice, if it's the one that was released by the hot knife in my Design/tech class. :)

Anyway, I just wanted to know if you need permission to use a song title from another band as your name. I know it's kinda lame but all the names I come up with are taken.

A couple of my friends and I are going to start a blues/blues rock band and I was wondering which name sounds best?
Villanova Junction
Burning Desire
Riviera Paradise
Smoking Gun
Highway 61 Revisited

As far as I know you don't need permission. There are loads of bands that name themselves from other band's songs. Scary Kids Scaring Kids, We Are Scientists and In the Clear all took their names from Cap'n Jazz songs.

This is kind of an oblique question, but does anyone else feel like a band gets more motivation if they get themselves named? I've been playing with a group for awhile now, and I'm really pushing to name us. Maybe its because I'm OCD but I think it really helps focus the group. Otherwise you might think it's just a weekly jam session with some buds.

^ With my band, I really think it will help us focus. Probably not with most band though but it's good to have a project name. For that reason I come to you with a question...

The Buttered Cat Paradox
Pumpernickel Toast

Which do you think is better for an Alt. Rock band with a million influences from other genres?

Neither of them are catching me. The first one sounds like you aren't serious at all, and the second is just blah to me.

What do you guys think of... Evadlite? No meaning really, original word i made up a few years ago.

Thrash metal

E-VAD-LITE

Kinda weird that a thrash metal band would have "lite" in it, but otherwise, I like it. It strikes me more as indie rock than thrash metal, but I do like it.

How about the name "Ashen Remnant," for an experimental/nu metal band?

Sounds about right. I wouldn't have one of those "wow, that name doesn't fit the style" moments that I've had before.
