Ok all... to stop the influx of band name threads in this forum and many others, i'm starting this one off to replace the one moved out of MT into the archive.

First of all, READ THIS THREAD (http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21206) for UGers suggestions. If you want a band name, the liklihood is that you will find one there.

Also try these if you really have no creativity of your own, try these generators:

General:
http://www.joescafe.com/bands/
http://www.elsewhere.org/cgi-bin/bandname
http://www.afm.org/public/musicbiz/bandnamegenerator.php
http://www.bandnamemaker.com/sbf/docs/

Emo:

Bluegrass :p: ):

<hr>

Ok, now whilst i've provided those links for you, remember your band name has not only to be memorable, but also have some reasoning behind it. "I found it on a tab site/I used a band name generator" will get you laughed out of Rolling Stone interviews when you're rich and famous... try to use something personal or meaningful from your life.

Here's a few links and tips:
- BBC Guide (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/onemusic/startingout/namesp01.shtml) - Read this one... it's a great little guide on how to choose a name, and all the legal nitty-gritty on registration and your rights.
- Band Names and the Law (http://www.alankorn.com/articles/band_names.html)

Next step? Checkin no-one else has your band name!!

Search on these sites:
http://ubl.artistdirect.com/
http://www.music-bands-list.com/
http://www.google.com (I know, it's obvious but some people are just ****in' stupid ;) ... search for your band name and the word band... simple).

Your band name isn't there?

If you want to register your band name?

Well first read up on the law: http://www.music-law.com/bandname.html

Check out this guide to registering and TradeMarking: http://www.vocalist.org.uk/band_name_registration.html

Ready to register?

Perhaps try a registration site:

<hr>

Ok that should help hopefully, and cut out the. "What shall I call my band?" threads.

I'll leave this thread open for questions, tips etc, and if anyone wants opinions on band names (after they've gone through the above process!!)

Id go with Idle Hands. The other ones sound kind of cliche (especially Battle Axe).

I'd definately say Idle Hands... even though you probably ripped it off the film. Classic film mind you. I agree with Metal Army... the others are too cliche.

Do any of them have meaning to you, or are they just random?

Band names are supposed to have meaning?

LazyGuitar
10-09-2004, 06:28 PM
^ Well no, it doesn't have to... but if you're serious about your music, it would be odd to have a name that has no meaning... in my opinion anyway. As I said in my first post....

there's a run of the mill british band called "toploader", which is the name of a technique to roll a joint. (certainly meaningful then) In an interview they explained that in Malaysia and Singapore they have to make up a different story!

Okay, all I gotta know is if this is a good name or not. My band is Punk, usually realting somewhere to the Alkaline Trio and Green Day (fairly big difference in between there). Anyway, I'm not sure what the name is gonna be, but one night the idea just poppe dinto my head to call my band "Over-Caffienated". Seemed like a good enough name for me. We love doing all the jumping and everyhting on stage, so the name actually fit us fairly well.

My friend was in a band called Lost Prophets...but now since it's taken, they don't have one. Which sucks cause they kick some ass.

Some names I thought of...Frozen Tears, Government Cheese, Sunset Failed, and Novus Ordo Seclorum. What do you think is the best?

theshowbizkid
11-26-2004, 09:26 PM
I record under the pseudonym 'Karel Klos'. The reason for this is somewhat long winded:

He is a Czech pop singer that appears in the Milan Kundera novel 'The Book Of Laughter & Forgetting' and is symbolic of "music without memory, the music under which the bones of Beethoven and Ellington, the ashes of Palestrina and Schoenberg are forever buried".

Karel's role is nothing more than a brief cameo in the novel, but its always been one that has thrown up the most questions for me. Can music exist without memory?

I have come to view this from the idea that the buried bones are not forgotten, but merely beneath the surface, and this is very much the way that I construct music. The theory is deeply grained, but the music is based around feeling, not memories. Therefore, the name has always felt most appropriate for me.

StevieVanHendrix:*NewFound* is complete **** and I not only think you

aliceinnirvana:Frozen Tears - Good, but I think it´s already taken,
Government Cheese - stupid, only for a punkband,
Sunset Failed - not bad, depends on what music you make,
Novus Ordo Seclorum - "The new order of..."! Which word is
"Seclorum"?
theshowbizkid: "music without memory, the music under which the bones of
Beethoven and Ellington, the ashes of Palestrina and
Schoenberg are forever buried", wonderful!Really wonderful!

Aurora or Vinyl

LazyGuitar
11-30-2004, 08:16 AM
^ Aurora is unbelievably common as a band name....

http://ubl.artistdirect.com/cgi-bin/gx.cgi/AppLogic+Search?select=MusicArtist&searchstr=aurora&searchtype=NormalSearch&start=1&submit.x=0&submit.y=0

"Vinyl" is less common, but still not very original. And pretty boring to be honest... perhaps add more words to it to make it stand out.

Glockstuhldreizehn is composed from the words "Bell", "Chair" and the number thirteen!!! It's plain nonsense!!!! I think language jokes are cheap, especially if you can't speak the language you want to arse, but if you think this name is good...
I can translate German nonsense names if any of you ****ers want to make some.

All me and my friends do is make up band names. Of course most of them are pretty dumb and would be great for a punk band. Here are some suggestions for all you unnamed punkers:
Spinning Chemical Boy
Mechanical Horse Knuckles
Rusted Donkey Warlock
Zombie Scooter
Front-Flipping Bus Drivers From The Center Of The Earth
Ceramic Kitty Stool
F.U.N.(Fatkids UNited)
John Wayne's Hairbrush
Viking Bananas
Low-Carb Fistfight
Cemented Stopsign
Low Flying Tractor

Anyways, those all the ones that probly wont make it to fame. My bands name is O.A.F.A.(Once And For All). The only cool band names we've ever come up with is Godrest, Upward Spiral, and Faithgaurd or Faith Garden. Why is it so hard to come up with cool band names and its easy to come up with dumb ones? Try some Power Metal. Death Metal IS all about screaming into the mic, in this case you're right. But Heavy Metal isn't, unless you mean something by Korn or Slipknot. Don't laugh at me, boys, I know someone who said they were Heavy Metal. (I know they're not!)

Homeless is rather a name for a Emo band, I think.
DevilDriver made a song "I could care less" in which the phrase "We're going straight to hell" is an essential part of the refrain. I don't know much about The Clash.

Please, dudes, rate the names. I don't want to be the only one who does this, it's the "Band Name Thread", not the "Kappa Rates Band Names Thread"!

ive been sitting on the band name Yossarian for quite a long while... (since reading catch 22 :p)...

a) what do you think of it as a band name? and more importantly
b) with kasabians recent success does it sound like too much of a rip off now ive got a new band to actually use it with

Yea, thanks. But I just write my opinion. And I think no one is feeling great about one comment. And for example I thought that Robbieeggo's names were bad, but you think they're great. I think it would be fine for Robbieeggo if he has more than one opinion (Sorry, I chose you just for example). So please, rate band names too!!!

I want to use the name Ninth Circle for my band. But I've done some research and I found out that there's already a band from the mid '90s that used that name. I think they were only a local band and that they've broken up. If I used the name Ninth Circle, is there a possibility that the band could still sue me? Should I keep using the name or should I use a new name just to be on the safe side? If I have to change my band's name, which one of these do you think sounds best.. I mostly play grindcore by the way..

Embalming Fluid
Projectile Vomit
Sonic Death
Euphoric Death

Worst that can happen is you have to change your name, that happend to a local band, well now they are farely popular, PFR wich was formerly Pray For Rain, wich turned out to be taken after they struck a record deal, oops. But yeah, if you have to you could call yourself down the road "The band formerly known as Ninth Circle" or just some funny nine circles symble :P

Could someone help me with my band name here.I was going for Epitaph, but I recently found out it's the name of a label,so would that be like ripping off the label? BTW,we're sort of a mix of AIC, pantera and a lot of classic rock like sabbath, kiss,Zep and the like. just to give an idea of our style.

At last someone rates names! Thanx!

Black Smoke is a great name!
Gay sleep over party featuring the marmite miners is immature!
Letters to Janie is OK. Reminds me of Sonata Arctica's "Letter to Dana"
jimmyspithead : I don't like them that much, but I'd go with "Freebase". "Sinep" is so stupid it isn't even funny!
