Greetings,

As you can see, I'm new here. I don't have a guitar.. yet. I'm planning to buy one soon but the thing is that i don't know which kind of guitar I should buy(Model, strings, everything) I want to play metal(Death and black mostly). Also, I'm pretty much broke at the moment so the cheaper, the better :) . I don't have any ''guitar items'' such as amps(I think it's called) Would that be a problem?

A few more questions:

Is it possible learn playing by yourself without a teacher?

What do I need in order to play a guitar by myself? Books and stuff like that etc.

As i mentioned, I love metal. Can I start off by playing it or do i have to start with ''easy stuff''?

In other words: I'm completely new to all this so, i need help to start off.

Thank you :)

Himml

PS. The structure of the text might be a little ''clumsy''. Was rushing ;)

1. you're gonna need an amp to make death metal sounds. for sure, i'm not the one to comment on such gear as i'm more of a blues player so i'll wait on someone else to give you some specs.

2. yes it's possible, but it takes longer, i learnt without a teacher, but other people i know did get lessons. it's all personal preference and also budget.

3. really just a guitar, and some hands... but do some research, watch a few youtube videos for tips, they help.

4. it's ALWAYS advised you start with "easy stuff" otherwise if you try to run before you can walk then you will just lose faith in the instrument in weeks/months and give it up for good, start slow, learn as much as you can. i made the mistake of trying to do too much too quick, i then gave up for 18 months, then picked up the guitar again and forced myself to start from scratch and i'm a MUCH better guitarist than i otherwise would be.

hope this helped, anymore questions then feel free to ask :)

Thank you very much :)

Do you know where i can buy or find some lyrics/texts whatever it's called or will i have to do it all by my ear looking at videos?

Lyrics are the words of the song btw....
You either meant to say tabs or sheet music I am guessing. There are lessons here on UG on how to read tabs...... here is a link: How To Read Tabs (http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/lessons/for_beginners/how_to_read_tabs.html)
And I learnt all I know on a program called guitar pro... You can find guitar pro tabs on UG. But you have to download the guitar pro software first. :)

Hope that helps

EDIT: What is the difference on 6, 4, 5 and 12 string guitars?

Well if you don't know how then yea I guess so. lol
I strongly recommend getting a guitar tuner, I have a one with an in-built metronome (I might have phrased that wrong. :P)... Tune your guitar with a tuner, then detune the strings besides the low E string, then try tuning the guitar without the tuner. After ur finished check your results. That's how i practised when i started... :D

Does such an item exist?!

And I'm a little confused. How can i move my fingers so quickly over the strings like i see people do it?

EDIT: And how i tune my guitar into playing a song? For example if i want to play 'Children of damned tab' how can i tune my guitar specially to play that`?

EDIT: Do you know a guitar that's good at playing Death and black metal? A cheap one preferably.

1. they do exist, i haven't got one but i've seen them

2. practise practise practise practise practise

3. most songs are in E standard (normal tuning) but some require drop D or even lower, that usually requires tuning your low E (fattest string) down a bit.

4. what's your budget? cheap could be 100 or 500 depending on what you want and how much you have for it.

also how much do you have for an amp and pedals?

Hmm.. I have around 500 for everything including guitar, amp everything.

EDIT: Well, i know that i have to practice to move my fingers quickly but isn't there a ''special kind of training made specially'' for that?

Playing with the guitar like it was piece of toy will probably not make me better at it, eh?

ok then, i'd SUGGEST 250 for a half decent guitar, 200 for an amp and 50 for accessories (strap, cables, even a pedal?)

by the fact you used the sign i guess you're in the UK?

How many strings should it have?

Commonly guitars have 6 strings. So i think you should get a 6 string at first, after you learn then you can go to 7 or 12 string guitars. :)

Oh and there are no such things as guitars with 4 or 5 strings <<Those are Bass guitars. :D

LTD Viper-10 gets mixed reviees on U-g but it's not a bad guitar for a first one.

as for the X-Provoke HT-212, seen pictures and it looks like a jem rip-off, out of the two i'd go with the LTD Viper-10.

the peavey vypyr i showed you would be a good amp, for a first one anyway.

so cliche', cheaply made, sound TERRIBLE and look horrible.

BC Rich will never probably get a decent review from anyone...

Dean on the other hand, are a good guitar company with a good reputation. (unless you encounter some loyalists who hate everything but what they have)

yep. that's a good solid first gutiar that's actually a lot more versatile than it looks.

as for the harley benton amp: not the best.

if you're looking around the 100 mark (UK money) then while it's not a great amp, one of these should see you through your first 'rig' http://www.dv247.com/guitars/marshall-mg15fx-guitar-amp-combo--61563 Marshall MG15DFX, got built in distortion and other effects too.

yep. that's a good solid first gutiar that's actually a lot more versatile than it looks.

I'd suggest you have a couple of lessons just to get you started, given your questions on using tuners etc.

Get the teacher to go over setting up, playing your first chords, reading guitar tabs, strumming etc. When I had lessons, it was 8 for 30 mins, by the end of one if not two lessons you should be able to pick any easy song tab and play it (with practise.)

Also it's probably worth going to some local gigs (prefferably open mic nights where the musicians can be more friendly) and make friends. Find out what gear they use, what you like the sound of. If you say something like "I like your sound, what effects pedal are you using?" you'll usually get an answer.

Hmm, local gig you say... Well, I have no idea where those are being hold. Heck, I don't even know what it is to be honest.

I suppose, I could get a few lessons. Thanks for the suggestion :)

Sadly, I can only afford these Marshall amps: MARSHALL MG15R - MARSHALL MG15 - MARSHALL MG10.

The 'MARSHALL MG15' sounds ''heaviest'', sweet and ''best'' in my ears, so I might buy that one. But I'd like to hear opinions.

The rest sounded.. I don't know.. not as... wild and aggressive as the 'MARSHALL MG15' did.
