I've mostly been listening to the heavier side of the spectrum for the past few years, but recently I've been trying to get into some non-metal bands for a change. So far I've REALLY gotten into Lower Definition, Minus The Bear, The Dear Hunter, City and Colour, Envy on the Coast, First Signs of Frost, and to a lesser extent Circa Survive, Closure in Moscow, and letlive. I realize that's a pretty diverse list but I was hoping somebody could recommend me more bands along the same lines. I'm looking for stuff that's catchy and well-written, and the guitars and vocals are the two most important factors for me.

I can honestly say I have never heard of any of those before now.

This may be a stretch, but I went through my music library and this is the best I could pick out that fits your description..

Fleet Foxes
Devin Townsend's "Ki" album
Jethro Tull's "Thick as a Brick" album
Beardfish
The Black Keys

Hope it helps...

Elliott Smith (catchy, extremely good guitar vocals and lyrics) , Bright Eyes (some songs might appeal they have a pretty diverse sound i'd check out the albums digital ash in a digital urn, LIFTED, fevers and mirrors first), Animal Collective, Tubelord (i'd recommend the song 'night of the pencils')

Hope you enjoy at least one of those =P

Wow, I really shouldn't have posted this just before final exams. I've been really busy, sorry I haven't gotten back to this. BK202, thanks a lot for posting so many links, that was pretty helpful. All of these recs have made me realize how apparently picky I am about vocals haha. There were a lot that I feel like I would have liked were it not for the vocals. It doesn't help that I'm not really a fan of emo or screamo vocals, and for some reason thick European accents put me off too (which is probably the only thing keeping me from enjoying Lower Than Atlantis).

I think out of everything recommended I'm most intrigued by Tubelord (though that's a godawful band name), Meet Me in St. Louis, mewithoutyou, and Maps and Atlases.

Just listen to The Gaslight Anthem. I don't know what you're looking for, and they're definitely not as heavy as letlive or First Signs of Frost, but listen to them anyway. They're quite possibly the happiest depressing band I've ever heard. Or the saddest uplifting band. Hell, they're catchy and they make you feel great when you're down.

The new Thursday album.
I don't like the new album as much. I don't think that it has as much emotion or effort as the previous albums.
