Couldn't see a thread on this already, don't rage at me if there is one!

Who of you collects vinyl? I started last year and it's somewhat addicting (albeit limited by my current monetary situation...).
So far I have:
Converge: Jane Doe (yellow, 2nd pressing), No Heroes (black) and the split with Drop Dead they did recently.
Defeater: Empty Days And Sleepless Nights (Black)
August Burns Red: Leveler (Clear)
Metallica: And Justice For All (Original pressing, charity shop bargain!)
Brutality Will Prevail: Sleep Paralysis and their split with Hang The Bastard
Coke Bust: Degradation EP (black)
Gallows: Split with November Coming Fire (black)
and a couple of 7"s from TDON bands, with more on the way.

I started collecting vinyl this year. I think I have around 60 right now, but I'm constantly getting new records in the mail (the count for this week so far is 12). I'll post some pictures/make a list shortly.

6 is a great price for any LP, nice snag. I missed Dragged into Sunlight when they made their first batch, hopefully it won't take off like those Acid Witch LPs did (Came out 08, and now sell for around 100, -__-)

OT, I don't really have any hardcore albums on vinyl at all. Hardcore punk, I do have Static Age by the Misfits. About it. :p:

I got the Kaddish LP for £3, which is apparently $4.86, so I was pretty pleased with that. Also got the Todos Caeran LP for free, just because James is cool like that. I like deals.

I still need to pick up that Todos record.

I used to make $21 an hour (and $30/h on Fridays) when I was working in the trade (pipe-fitting) and other than buying a car I barely spent any money. That plus the hefty EI checks I received for 4 and a half months helped increase the size of my record collection.

for those who buy records to listen to rather than as part of a collection -

any advice on how to maintain/properly set up a turntable? im looking really for websites, books, something like that.

when i listen to my records i need to walk to my nan's house (she lives like one mile away), and she has a beautiful 70's pioneer turntable hooked up to what i believe to be some kind of pre amp and some massive speakers.

due to it being older than i am, its a little temperamental. i need to figure out which part of that setup is causing the problem and how i can sort it out. ive listened to plenty of records on it but i feel like im not getting the most out of it yet. so help would be appreciated.

Oh dude, you have Ills on yellow splatter too? Rad. I had that for a bit. I traded it off in a really shitty deal to a friend because he was a much bigger DI fan than I was.

Damn, that's the very one that started my friend on collecting vinyl :p:

If it wasn't for that he wouldn't have wanted my Ills LP.

Then again, if it wasn't for me getting Ills on vinyl, he probably wouldn't have started collecting in the first place.

Annihilator666

The Healing Process has always been my favorite DI records and one of favorite records in general, so I'm glad I found a copy after a ridiculous amount of Google searching.

I think the first record I bought was the Lowtalker 10', and the first record I pre-order was the latest Ghostlimb release back in March. Kind of weird that it's been less than a year and I have over 100 records now.

Jeez, y'all have BTBAM's S/T on 1st press? Impressive.

I was going to get Hypersleep on vinyl on RSD11 but the shop my friends and I went to sold out pretty quick. One of my friends went to another shop a few miles away and got a copy from there, but it was the last one so I was out of luck.

Just as well, I've still only listened to it twice.

Annihilator666
01-29-2012, 07:28 PM
The S/T was just pressed on vinyl a few weeks ago. Victory is trying to make as much money off BTBAM as they can now that they're on Metal Blade, so they're currently repressing/pressing all their releases.

I was going to buy Hypersleep when they played my city, but their merch guy (bassist from Fear Before) said they sold out the night before, so I came home and bought it off Discogs for $20.

Also Anihilator666, is that what the dead swans repress colour is called? Best coloured vinyl ever.

It was $250 with insured shipping. Most expensive item I've ever purcahsed on the internet, but I don't regret it at all. I have Inle and Owsla, but I would rather buy all the records at once then slowly pick up the others for way too much money because people on eBay are greedy assholes.

They still have some left here:

And I bought that Throats LP from Hellfish Records last year, but it seems to be sold out everywhere except for here:

EDIT: On another note, one of my friends thinks he needs to start buying records now because I do and I want to slap him because he doesn't own a record player and doesn't plan on getting one. 1. I've tried that site, but the paypal bit is screwed, i'm gonna contact them and see whats occuring.
edit: tried to contact them, that doesnt work either, it appears the store is defunct. boooo.

2. I don't own a record player, I use my dads (when im home) as he has a reaaaally nice one, hooked up to a huge stereo system, it's incredible. My plan is, start small with a cheap one that works for now and gets me decent sound, then when earn loads of money from being an amazing research chemist, I'm gonna buy the best system I can afford.
I see the attraction of collecting records just for the collection (just like people collect stamps), and at least he will be legally buying music and hence support the hardcore scene! I haven't listened to alot of my records yet cos I don't often have access to my dad's record player  but hopefully this will change soon :D

I started collecting vinyl in 1981 when I was 12. Police's Zenyatta Mondatta was my first album (as a gift). No wait, a K-Tel album from the 1970s with Kung Fu Fighting and Mohammed Ali the Black Superman and Low Rider by War. My dad gave me both of those.

The first 12" I bought was Rush Moving Pictures when it came out.

I bought a lot of 45s at first, Devo, Split Enz, the Vapours, new wave stuff, which was my first turn on.

After Moving Pictures, though, was Exit Stage Left when it came out. Then 2112, and it was only Rush, getting all the back catalogue. And then a whole bunch of other stuff through my teen years.

I remember buying And Justice For All when it came out in 1988, I think.

In any case, I still have not gotten over the switch to CDs, which in my mind is infinitely inferior to vinyl.

The whole album cover experience has now been taken away from rock music. That is a travesty. I used to get into whole genres of music and discover unknown groups, just because of album covers!

If you knew how to read the "signs" or "signals" of an album cover, you could pretty well judge what the band was like. A CD jewel case just doesn't cut it. A whole genre of rock art has disappeared. Artists like Roger Dean made their names just from their album covers.

Anyways, I still have all my old LPs. Side One and Side Two. Concept albums, etc. CDs just have destroyed so much.

Excellent! Whenever I'm home I always have a browse through my Dad's vinyl collection, he doesn't have too many rarities (although he does have some sweet iron maiden LP's/singles/picture disks) but he's definitely a man of taste.

In other news, was woken up by the delivery of two new vinyls:
BWP - The Root Of All Evil - Bronze, ltd to 100,
and Guns 'n roses - Appetite for Destruction, a re-press - so not gonna be limited - but still awesome to have as it was a definite favourite of mine when I was a kid :D

So my collection will soon be:
Defeater - Travels
Shai Hulud - That Within Blood Ill-Tempered
Killing the Dream - Lucky Me
Counterparts - The Current Will Carry Us
Dangers - Anger
It Prevails - Findings
Exalt - Breach False Minds
Every Time I Die - Ex-Lives
Dead Swans - Sleepwalkers
Dead Swans - Anxiety and Everything Else
Verse - Aggression

I think that's it for now. Have the first six and am waiting for the last 5.

I still need to order that Aggression re-press. Actually, I think I'm going to do that right now with a shirt.

EDIT: "Bridge Nine's first pressing of Verse's Aggression on vinyl."

The first pressing was on Rivalry, but Bridge Nine did the repress and CD release. So it's still technically Bridge Nine's first pressing of the record.

Not sure what color I should get. Leaning towards the white/black.

Yeah got my email last week, so stoked for this! Glad I chose the rarer colour too (/500 for grey & black, /1000 for clear and red) :D.
This is my third order from the B9 store (I've bought the 2 remaining defeater vinyls I needed and the Sleepwalkers repress so far) and I've found they've been pretty quick with shipping (even though I'm in the UK); they even chucked in a free cd (albeit a crap one) with my first order. With the second one they gave me some PETA stickers, boooooo.

If you want a physical copy of something, vinyl is the best, and it's way cooler than a CD and they're collectors items. Plus they sound better than CDs or digital downloads. They're also just awesome to look at too.

For me, vinyl makes me appreciate a work in its entirety by an artist. Because when I buy a CD or whatnot, I listen to it once or twice and then pick out the songs I like and only listen to them again. I generally listen to full albums in the order they were meant to be heard when I'm spinning records. Since I started obtaining vinyl, my appreciation for a lot of bands and albums has increased and stuff.

Levi79
03-02-2012, 01:28 AM
That's cool. I can respect that totally. I "acquire" my music in ways other than CD's and vinyl if you know what I mean, but I'm an huge merch collector. I have so many band shirts it's nuts. I could go probably 3 months without needing to wash any shirts. That's my way of supporting bands I guess.

I was always kind of curious why people were big vinyl fans so I thought I'd ask. At ETID's show the other day they released Ex Lives early on the date that I went to. I was actually really tempted to grab the vinyl just cause it looked cool, but decided to grab a shirt instead.

Vinyl sounds better if you have a good player connected into a respectable hi-fi set up. Play a CD through the same hi-fi system and you'll hear the difference.
It became outdated because they wear out, CD's are smaller and you can fit more on a CD.

It is. It's not a massive "ZOMG, THAT'S LIKE A NEW PRODUCER" change, but it's a "warmer", more... OPEN, feeling. It feels "realer". It's very hipster and artsy, and I hate to talk about it like that, but it just is. Same, awesome quality hifi system, running a CD and then it's record counterpart, and the record wins 10 times out of 10.

I'm transferring some money to my current account (which never gets used) so that I have cash for when the new converge album goes on presale. Hopefully have some money for record store day too.

Here's a pic of what I've picked up this semester:
http://oi40.tinypic.com/2llmv85.jpg
From top left to bottom right:
Defeater - Travels (4th press, mustard yellow),
Guns 'N Roses - Appetite for Destruction (repress on 180g black),
Dead Swans - Anxiety and Everything Else (Grey/black),
Oathbreaker - Maelstrom (1st press, brown),
Last Witness - Mourning After (red/black swirl),
Dead Swans - Sleepwalkers (2nd press, tequila sunrise),
BWP - TROAE (Bronze),
Verse - Aggression (1st pressing, grey and white swirl),
Hang The bastard S/T (black),
Protest The Hero - Fortress (purple),
Grader - Amnesty 7",
Defeater - Lost Ground (3rd pressing, white),
Coke Bust - FBC EP (3rd press - i think - on pink vinyl).

I told b9 to draw kittens on the back of the box when they shipped me Aggression. They even held my order up until I returned an order they accidentally sent me.

And then even after all that, they didn't draw kittens on the box.

I am terribly disappointed. Why would they have a section for specific instructions if they're not going to follow them?

Polyvinyl would have done it.

Pretty good piece, a good read!

That NME article is so full of shit it's unbelievable, how could anyone want to stop buying CDs/Records and replace it with digital music? I do listen to most of my music on my phone or computer, but I still prefer to own the physical product - like with buying a record (esp. if gatefold) you get artwork and whatever else the artist wants to include (like the booklet that came with my copy of Jane Doe or the book that comes with the latest Defeater album).

The critique on that article was probably the best thing I'll read all week.

By the way, if anyone's interested, the guy who owns that collection also runs probably the best label in the country for emo/screamo/hardcore. Released the likes of Beau Navire, Iselia, Maths, Todos Caeran, Chronos, Silencio Ahora Silencio, Hospitals, Grappler...releasing our next record... you get it.

While you guys are talking about deadformat: ogle my friend Darren's ridiculous Converge collection. He's only missing two records (they're both specific colour presses of a compilation) and I think his collection might be the biggest in the world? I think that's literally a fact, I'm just not sure if I'm remembering right. Either way, impressive.

I saw his collection. Jealousy is not a strong enough emotion.

My tradelist link is in my sig :)

I got my first pressing of Aggression from DF for £13 quid. Unbelievable. I should be getting a couple of Abolition splits (hang the bastard, Ark of the covenant) too which will be sweet.

Of course, it's a superb album. And yes, it looks sexy as ****!

Student loan came in an hour ago, so I ordered Scurrilous on vinyl. Now to wait 3 months for it to arrive, **** you canadian mail.

Haha no way, Dog Knights is a cool label. Preordered the new Hospitals 7" from them only a week or two ago.

I don't have the patience to sift through ebay so religiously, especially as most of the rare things seem to crop up interntationally rather than in the UK.

Since student loan came in, I have bought:
PTH - Scurrilous
Last Witness - An Unfinished Life
Desolated - Verse of Judas (pre-order)
HtB and AoTC splits with abolition (DeadFormat)
Sleep - Dopesmoker (reissue)

And now I find out I'm getting a 195 quid tax return?
Winning.

Also bought a rare (/15) copy of violence, violence off deadformat. stoked :D

I have all three colors of the first pressing of the Full of Hell/Code Orange Kids split because I thought I was going to get more into collecting COK.

But then prom happened and I am literally out about 200 dollars, so I'm selling two of the copies for what I paid, 5 each, plus shipping, if anyone wants them. I'm probably just going to hold onto the least limited so the Yellow and Clear Purple (Which are now sold out) are available.

Annihilator666

How much are you selling the yellow one for?

BK202
05-28-2012, 02:02 PM
5 dollars.

I'm not a scumbag. It's what you would've paid off of Topshelf, I'm just trying to get some money back to break even so summer plans won't be hindered.

Annihilator666

Let me ask my friend about it and I'll get back to you. I remember him wanting that split but his Paypal is currently messed up.

Oh man, that's a bummer. I only have a slight warp on my BTBAM The Great Misdirect LP but it really isn't too bad. It doesn't ruin the playback at all.

robnewland
06-01-2012, 04:36 PM
My copy of R&F - Faith is warped slightly at the end of the A side, the last few notes of "Things are different now" skip over and over, it's a really weird effect.

Annihilator666
06-01-2012, 04:41 PM
I haven't tried playing it yet because my record player isn't set up right now, but it could be a lot worse.

Buying records in the summer sucks sometimes.

Sold it to some guy in Australia, sorry :(

Need cash for prom/car damage payments though, so if you see anything on this list that you dig, make an offer. There are some things I will for sure not part with, but yeah.

Someone just offered me 40 dollars for my Doppelganger test pressing.

1. I paid 65.
2. it's #18/24
3. The /500 version of this same pressing goes for 80.

That is probably the worst (serious) offer I have ever gotten for something.
